Tropes

  • The Artifact: The Blue Thing. Justified in that it apparently cures bugs that avatars might get when logging in. Whether this actually works has yet to be seen, though there are apparently side-affects.
  • Chainsaw Good: Agil wields one for no inexplicable reason; doesn't make it any less cool.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Keita dies not by committing suicide, but being run over by a school bus driven by Klein.
  • Cute, but Cacophonic: Kirito, whenever he screams or gets agitated enough that his voice becomes higher.
  • The Heart: Asuna acts as this towards Kirito. She is one of the only players who treats him as a player, and emphasizes with him over his issues because she faced similar situations as his. Even after being shunned after defeating the first floor boss, Asuna still has faith in Kirito and asks him to help her clear the remaining floors.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Kibao, surprisingly enough. While often brought up as a Straw Character, he does have a point in pointing out that a bug that causes explode via contact is incredibly dangerous and that having someone with that bug around so many people could result in injury or death.
  • Made of Explodium: Kirito's bug makes him this whenever he attacks something or gets attacked by something. Though this may not apply anymore because he ate The Blue Thing.
  • Misunderstood Loner with a Heart of Gold: Justified in Kirito's case: his avatar has (had?) a bug that causes explosions if he attacks something, or is attacked by something. Those he gets close to either shun him, or are in danger of being hurt because of said bug. This causes him a great deal of angst because he wants to be a normal player and be able to be seen as such, rather than the Beta Buster.
  • The Quiet One: Sachi only speaks in small grunts or sighs, the only time she says a word is right before her avatar disappears after her death blow.
  • Sanity Slippage: Akihiko Kayaba went through this when he tried to research the present day gamers while making SAO.
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!!: A nonverbal example: Agil slashes apart Kibao to make him stop shunning the Beta Buster/Kirito.
Diable: Is he gonna be all right?
Agil: Yeah, he just needs time for the message to sink in.
(Kibao is sitting down with several slash marks through him and smoke emitting from his body, groaning quietly)
  • Take That!: invoked Akihiko Kayaba's reason for turning SAO into a death game: he was turned onto this path after being disgusted by the behaviour of modern gamers.
  • True Companions: The Moonlight Black Cats. They are all players whose avatars have various bugs because of the problems they encountered while logging in. After finding Kirito, they enthusiastically (try to get in contact with him before kidnapping him and tying him up) invite him to join, and tell him of a way that could get rid of his own bug. They remain supportive of him, even when his bug accidentally destroys part of a floor. Ducker is a subversion, as he fully intends, and succeeds, in murdering the group via Slaughternaughts and Murder Golems before being killed himself.
