Cuz his name is Cory Kenshin!

"Sup YouTube, what's going on? Cory Kenshin here and WELCOME to my TV Tropes page!"

Cory DeVante Williamsnote  (born November 9, 1992), better known online as Cory Kenshin, is a Let's Player on YouTube based in Michigan known for his refusal to curse, Cowardly Lion tendencies, Motor Mouth and fantastic editing skills.

When he started his channel in 2009, Cory originally focused on vlogs and comedy sketches, but in 2014, he started his first Let's Play series for Punch-Out!!. His early years had him mostly play RPG horror games including Ib, Mad Father, Corpse Party, and Ao Oni. He didn't start gaining a lot of attention until he played Five Nights at Freddy's, as the game was extremely popular upon release.

Now, Cory mostly plays games like Yandere Simulator, Geometry Dash, and Happy Wheels. As his fanbase continues to expand, he's begun playing more and more triple-A games such as Street Fighter V, Injustice 2 and The Evil Within 2. He's also known for taking extended breaks out of the blue, usually without warning, much to the chagrin of his subscribers.

Cory notably announced plans to retire from YouTube once he reached 10 million subscribers. Around June 24, 2021, while he was on hiatus, this milestone was passed. However, he returned that August and announced that he'd not only be staying but taking his YouTube channel to the next level.

He was also rumored to make a cameo in the film version of Five Nights at Freddy's (2023), which was confirmed when he appeared in the stinger of the official trailer.

    Games that Cory has played

Cory's videos provide examples of:

    A-E
  • Actually Pretty Funny: After spending most of the series trashing Taylor's puns in SIMULACRA, Cory applauds him for his Titanic pun.
    • A Real Life example between Cory and a fan.note
  • Actually Quite Catchy: Despite trashing Senpai in Friday Night Funkin', he still dances and sings to his first song.
  • Alliterative Title: His series Spooky Scary Sunday.
  • An Aesop:
  • Afro Asskicker: Switches between this and Funny Afro.
  • Angrish: Especially when playing rage games like Geometry Dash and Cuphead.
  • Audience Participation: Like most YouTubers, this is one of the biggest things that Cory values. A lot of his content (reading comments, Spooky Scary Sunday, Try Not To Laugh..) comes from the viewers.
  • Ascended Fanboy: Remember Cory's brother Anthony who appeared in an episode of FNaF2? He now has his own channel!
  • As the Good Book Says...: He is an outspoken Christian so most of his videos ends with a verse from The Bible.
  • Ax-Crazy: Games like Yandere Simulator really bring this out in him.
  • Badass Boast: Due to his Large Ham nature, this is only natural, though they tend to come off more wacky than cool.
  • Berserk Button: Making fun of his Ectodermal Dysplasia.
    • When special attacks don't land in Injustice 2 or Mortal Kombat X.
    • In his video for Aka Manto, he mentions he hates bullies.
    • During his gameplay for Araya, he says that anyone who disrespects their mom ticks him off.
    • Whenever his microphone fails to record properly, it understandably makes him angry.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Cory is normally never anything but a positive and genuine dude who aspires to help others any way he can, but the moment someone pushes him too far, it's not pretty. Just watch his video on Tee-Chip and Moteefe, it's filled with uncharacteristic angry yelling, Tranquil Fury and snarking.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Same as the above entry. He's an entertaining Cloud Cuckoo Lander most of the time. Until he isn't.
  • Be Yourself: When asked for advice about starting on YouTube, he cites this as the first one along with learning about making videos and maintaining Audience Participation.
  • Big Brother Mentor: Takes on this role in the Five Nights at Freddy's 2 episode that his brother Anthony appeared in.
  • Big "OMG!": He often yells this when he gets scared.
  • Bilingual Bonus: Cory speaks Japanese fluently and often drops Japanese phrases in his videos.
  • Big "WHAT?!": Whenever he's surprised by anything.
  • Black and Nerdy: Cory is very obviously both.
  • Black Guy Dies First: Subverted. Cory often in fact will say a character may not have gotten killed if they were black, because they would have run away.
  • Blatant Lies: Cory sometimes will boast about a feat he accomplished, saying he did it first try when it's clear he was about to lose his cool failing continuously beforehand.
  • Blood Knight: Whether it's him watching or doing the fighting, he can barely hold back his eagerness to jump into action.
  • Boastful Rap: Cory often breaks out into this if he finds the music in the game he's playing appealing.
  • Boisterous Bruiser: Cory gets very excited during in-game combat.
  • Bond Villain Stupidity: Discussed by him during his Dark Deception and Mortal Kombat 11 playthrough.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Cory may be a wacky Cloud Cuckoo Lander but he is an incredibly talented video editor at the end of the day, as well as a surprisingly good rapper when given time to write his stuff down.
  • Butt-Monkey: Several jokes have been made about Cory's chair enduring a lot of farts and abuse from Cory.
  • Catchphrase: Cory has quite the collection:
  • Celeb Crush: Meagan Good.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: Cory will hit on about any female he encounters in a game, but is pretty polite about it.
  • Cloud Cuckoo Lander: His videos are full of random and strange humor, and Cory himself often acknowledges how strange he is.
Cory: (after saying something particularly strange) "Yo, what's wrong with me?"
  • Companion Cube: His plant Momo.
  • Cowardly Lion: For all his bravado and big talk, Cory is very easily scared. He still manages to overcome it most of the time.
  • Determinator: Both in his let's plays and life. He often professes how important this trope is when pursuing your goals.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: It doesn't matter who it is, whether his psychotic neighbor or a horrid abomination of flesh, if given the chance, Cory will insult them.
  • The Diss Track: Not towards anyone...but things he can't stand.
    • Prior to that, he released one against himself for being away from YouTube for so long.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: If there is even one mildly attractive female on the screen.
  • Does Not Like Spam: When Cory was asked to do the banana and sprite challenge, he replied that he can't as he hates bananas because they make his tongue itch.
  • Don't Explain the Joke: Usually after he makes a pun.
  • Double Standard: Discussed by him in Yandere Simulator after he listened to The Journalist's tapes.
See, that's the thing, man. If it was a dude, if it...I'm sorry, but there is a double standard. Sometimes there is. Let that have been like, some dude, that killed like, some girl, then they'll be like "LOCK HIM UP! LOCK HIM UP!", but a girl, she can cry when she wants...pretty, probably...Dang! Now this dude got a freaking...freaking X right on his freaking forehead!
  • The Dreaded: Geras from Mortal Kombat 11 becomes this to him.
  • Drugs Are Bad: He has on at least two occasions made a joke about doing drugs, only to immediately drop the name of this trope.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: Everything about his original videos, from his weird straightened hair, to the fact that most of his videos were vlogs and comedy skits.
  • Epic Fail: A master of this.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Two examples from Mortal Kombat X and 11 respectively:
    • He played a match against D'Vorah as Shinnok. After beating her, he used a fatality that turned out to be...a little overboard. Keep in mind that Cory absolutely loathes D'Vorah for being a big traitor.
Cory: Yo, she was downright nasty but I don't even think she deserved all that.

    F-J

  • Lame Pun Reaction: To Taylor's puns in Simulacra.
  • Large Ham: Oh incredibly so.
Cory: (while killing zombies in Call of Duty) I am the CHOSEEEEEENNN!!!!
  • Lovable Coward: What Cory becomes during his horror game playthroughs.
  • Madness Mantra: Take your pills, Cory. Take your pills...
  • Mood Whiplash: There have been so many times where he tries to lighten the mood during a horror game playthrough, only to get interrupted by a noise or Jumpscare. Lampshaded by him during his Grandma video after a noise scared him.
Cory: I'm trying to think of a joke for the refrigerator and they do this?!
  • Motor Mouth: Cory says his intro quickly. Sometimes he slips into this while rapping as well.
  • Nice Guy: Overall, Cory pretty much exudes this when speaking about his fans.
  • The Nicknamer: He gave the name Sasha to Six, and continued to call her that even after learning her actual name.
  • Nightmare Face: Cory makes a lot of these.
  • No Indoor Voice: Not as loud as another YouTuber but he's certainly not quiet either.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: In his video for The Bunker, a game that falls under this category, he discusses how suspense is all you need for a horror game to work.
  • Oh, Crap!: It's always funny to see when Cory realizes that he messed up. Special mention goes to his playthrough of One Night at Flumpty's 3 when he got set up by having both Birthday Boy and the clown in the hallway and you're supposed to only flash Birthday Boy. You can guess what happened next.
  • Orphaned Series: A lot. Ones that comes to mind are DDLC, Five Nights at Wario's and MK11 Aftermath DLC.

    P-T
  • Porn Stache: Kinda has this look going on unfortunately.
  • Properly Paranoid: During horror game playthroughs, Cory often acts as this, overreacting to every little sound and motion, but definitely for good reason.
  • Pungeon Master: Cory often makes painful ones, they're usually followed by him trying to explain it.
  • Red Baron: The Anklebreaker, Bambikilla69.

"You already know, these no-name henchmen...you are all dead. If you don't have a name in this game, you're dead."
  • Religious Bruiser: Loves playing action games, and is an avid and outspoken Christian. Most of his outros are accompanied by a verse from the Bible.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: He goes on one after Taka's death in Ghost of Tsushima, which he took very hard. This poignant line pretty much sums it up:
Cory: (slaughtering enemies) I AM WHAT YOU CREATED!
  • Running Gag:
    • Cory boasting about his bravery, which results in a slow motion playback of him screaming to seconds earlier.
    • Cory going a more than a little Ax-Crazy whenever he plays Yandere Simulator but trying to convince the fans that he's still perfectly normal.
    • Cory calling out the "teacher" for his grades in Cuphead.
    • Cory threatening his camera man during his Cory X Cooking segments.
    • Cory playing a clip of a woman falling from a table whenever he makes bad jokes.
    • "Breaking the ankles" of any villain he manages to juke.
    • Always naming the love interest in Yandere Simulator "Baldpai".
    • If Cory's intro is going on for to long or he is bragging too much, another voice from off screen will yell for him to "freaking get on with the video".
    • Cory saying "up down, up down" at the start of every game he plays.
    • Whenever he introduces his plant, Momo, her intro is played almost immediately afterward.
    • His camera turning off during gameplay videos.
  • Say My Name: Why can he do what he does? Cuz his name is Cory Kenshin.
  • Scary Black Man: Generally downplayed since he's usually goofy and outgoing...until he goes Ax-Crazy or something genuinely angers him.
  • Screaming at Squick: While Cory does this all the time, his most iconic instance would be his horrified reaction to the creepy appearance of William Afton in this video by Squimpus McGrimpus.
  • Screams Like a Little Girl: All of the time. His screams has also been compared to Tom's.
  • Screw This, I'm Out of Here!: In episode 50 of Spooky Scary Sunday, his reaction to the titular intruder in "Intruder Alert" whispering "I am inside your home" invoked is to pause the video, throw his headphones off, and leave the room. Then he immediately comes back to finish the video.
  • Self-Deprecation: All the time in his videos.
    • He delivered a Take That! to YouTubers as whole in his Google Self video while making fun of his past self.
Cory: Nobody told me. Nobody told me to do this. YouTubers be talking all that bullcrap (laughs, then starts mocking his past self) "A few of my friends told me-" Nah. (laughs again) You ain't slick, big fella. You saw somebody do it and was like, "let me get them views". YouTubers be like, "Yeah, I saw in the comments you guys wanted me to-" Nah.
  • Sensory Abuse: There's a lot of flashing going on in his edits and sudden loud yells and noises.
  • Shipper on Deck:
  • Shout-Out:
  • Signature Headgear: Sometimes wears a beanie or a cap.
  • Signing-Off Catchphrase: "Subscribe today to join the Samurai and until next time my brothers and sisters."
  • Slasher Smile: Supports this a lot when going Ax-Crazy.
  • Soft-Spoken Sadist: He talks about how efficient this kind of villains is in his Dark Deception video with Mama Bear, while deeming villains who are prone to Villainous Breakdown as trash.
  • So Much for Stealth: In recent videos, Cory expresses his dislike for StealthBasedMissions as he prefers to go head-on. Anytime he tries to do stealth, it doesn't go well.
  • Sore Loser: Most of the time, he's pretty determined to beat any game, no matter how hard. There have been times where he couldn't beat a game and it made him very salty. Special mentions go to Akinator, Welcome to the Game, Puppet Combo's Nun Massacre.note
  • The Straight Man: Cory generally plays this role in collabs, though he'll tune in with his own jokes too.
  • Stunned Silence: At the end of his OFF Let's Play, when he sees The Batter's true form.
    • In Spooky Scary Sunday #037, after the end of the video "Secret Formula", he stares in silence for several seconds, then heads to the "Delete channel" button.
  • Tempting Fate: Oh, way, way too often it happens to poor Cory.
  • That's What She Said: Appears as a Freeze-Frame Bonus in his playthrough of Alcoholic Simulator, after he exclaims "Why is it not going in?".
  • That Came Out Wrong: Through his excitement, he can say a lot of suggestive things without meaning it.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: He mentioned in an episode of Geometry Dash that he has to reassure himself every single time he gotta record it. Also generally shows up anytime he senses that something is gonna be tedious.
  • Trademark Favorite Food: Swedish Fish and Oreos, and when playing The Evil Within 2, the green goop he likes to call Limeade.
  • Tranquil Fury: He can go through this just as often as he would explode in anger.

    V-Y
  • Victory Dance: Cory will especially does this if victory music is also included.
  • Voice of the Legion:
    • Often uses this effect to try and scare fans into liking his videos.
    • He also used this effect while reading Vinnie's dialogue pre-Final Night in Five Nights at Candy's 3.
    • In his video of Friday Night Funkin's Week 6, when he reads out The Spirit's lines, the audio is edited so that there is an echo, as if multiple voices are speaking at once.
  • Wham Line: "When we reach 10 million, if we reach 10 million, I will be announcing my retirement, from YouTube." Subverted when he returned from a long hiatus and revealed he wasn't retiring after all.
  • What Did I Do Last Night?: When he played I woke up next to her again, he makes a sketch in the intro about this trope happening to him.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: Cory has a strong fear of deep water. Especially evident in his videos for Subnautica and Raft.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Eight words: The world is not better off without you.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Oftentimes his reaction to something ridiculous or unexpected.
  • Younger Than They Look: One of his pet peeves is being mistaken for being older than he actually is. When he played How-Old.net, the website kept making him go up, much to his chagrin. Mentioned again in his Googling Myself video when he searches for "Is CoryxKenshin married?" and comes across a tweet where he said he got asked if he is married and it bothered him because it implied that he's older than he actually is. He even comes across the aforementioned video when he seaches for his age. He even asks the audience to leave their thoughts in the comments.
