Spy Hunter is a 2001 video game for the Playstation 2, which is a reboot of Spy Hunter (1983). The game was made similar to a racing game, where players control the car through a chase camera perspective. There are objectives the players need to pursue within a set time limit.

The game has been ported to the GameCube, the Xbox, the Game Boy Advance, Microsot Windows, OS X and Tapwave Zodiac.

Players assume the role of Alec Sects, an International Espionage Services (IES) agent who's tasked to down an evil MegaCorp known as NOSTRA. Daemon Curry, the founder of NOSTRA, is paranoid that the agent deployed in 1983 would be out to get him. So he made plans to take down the original Interceptor to stall Sects from getting to him.

Spy Hunter provides examples of:

  • Call-Back: The original arcade game is explicitly stated to be canon to the story of the 2001 game.
  • Disposable Vehicle Section: The Interceptor can eject sections and convert into a Secondary Escape Vehicle after taking enough damage.
  • EMP: An available weapon, with guidance capabilities. Use it to stop missile launches and disarm bombs quickly.
  • Fire-Breathing Weapon: The 2001 model Interceptor can fit a pair of rear-firing flamethrowers - kill that guy tailing you with fire.
  • Kill Sat: NOSTRA plans to use a set of them known as the Four Horsemen to take over the world's electricity grids.
  • Magnetic Weapons: One of these is a late-game unlock - a guided weapon that does incredible damage.
  • Macross Missile Massacre: With the Swarm Missile Launcher, four missiles can be fired at a time.
  • Mirror Boss: The fifth mission. He hijacked one of your power-up trucks and your own spy car against you.
  • More Dakka: You start off with a pair of machine guns with capacity and caliber increases as progression unlocks.
  • Sequel Hook: The game ends with Alec being deployed to Russia, setting the stage for SpyHunter 2.
  • Weaponized Car: The Interceptor II is given to Alec after NOSTRA forces take out the original Interceptor. The former's equipped (aside from machine guns) with an EMP Launcher and a scanner.
