Trivia / Yojimbo

Go To

  • Actor Allusion: Yoshio Tsuchiya once more plays a man who lost his wife to criminals. Only this time he gets a happy ending.
  • Completely Different Title:
    • Italy: The Challenge of the Samurai
    • Spain: Mercenary
    • Taiwan: Red Dead
  • The Foreign Subtitle:
    • Brazil: Yojimbo - The Bodyguard
    • Finland: Yojimbo: Knight of Fortune
    • Mexico: Yojimbo, the Mercenary
    • Portugal: Yojimbo: The Invincible
  • No Dub for You: Despite including Rashomon's original dub for the updated DVD/Blu-Ray release, The Criterion Collection failed to include the U.S. theatrical dubbed track for Yojimbo's reissue. To this day, the only home release of the English dub is still the old Embassy Home Entertainment release, and even that's rarer than its subtitled counterpart, released at the same time.
  • Production Posse: A few Akira Kurosawa regulars are in this movie, including Toshiro Mifune, Takashi Shimura (both he and Mifune were in Seven Samurai before), Tatsuya Nakadai, Kamatari Fujiwara, Yoshio Tsuchiya and Daisuke Kato.
  • Typecasting: Isuzu Yamada seems to only ever get cast in the role of "bitch" in a Kurosawa movie. After playing Lady Washizu in Throne of Blood and the scheming landlady Osugi in The Lower Depths, she plays a gangster's wife here.
  • Word of God: The creators said that Unosuke had spent some time in Yokohama before returning to town. Given that Yokohama in 1860 was rapidly becoming a cosmopolitan port town as one of the few places where foreigners could trade with the Japanese, this is the explanation for why Unosuke has an eclectic fashion sense and a gun.
