- All Dogs Are Purebred: Played with in the case of Rooster. Illumination confirmed that he is a purebred Welsh Sheepdog, but Wisdom Panel stated that he was 50% German Shepherd Dog, 25% Australian Shepherd and 25% Border Collie. It's likely that Wisdom Panel changed his breed to a mixed one for their giveaway. Also, Welsh Sheepdogs are a rare breed. People are more familiar with German Shepherds, Australian Shepherds and Border Collies.
- Kids' Meal Toy: As they did with the first movie, McDonald's had a Happy Meal tie-in. This one was a set of action figures, and the characters featured varied depending on the region.
- The Other Darrin: Patton Oswalt replaced Louis C.K. as the voice of Max. See Role-Ending Misdemeanor below for why.
- Playing Against Type: Nick Kroll usually voices goofy comic relief characters like Gunter, or more Laughably Evil villains like Professor Poopypants or the Douche. In this film he voices Sergei, a cruel circus ringmaster who is taken completely seriously as a threat.
- Real-Life Relative: The Crazy Cat Lady is voiced by Meredith Salenger, Patton Oswalt's wife.
- Role-Ending Misdemeanor: After his history of sexual misconduct was made public in 2017, Louis C.K. was outright forbidden from reprising his role as Max. See The Other Darrin above to see who replaced him.
- Those Two Actors:
- Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish's fifth film together.
- Surprisingly averted in the Japanese dub: This is the first Illumination Entertainment film in years without Kōichi Yamadera voicing at least a single voiced role. Keep in mind Yamadera has worked in all the Japanese dubs of Illumination's films since day one, together with Mamoru Miyano (who voice the Big Bad Sergei) since Despicable Me 2.note
- Write What You Know: Screenwriter Brian Lynch stated that he based Max’s struggles with Liam to when he became a father himself.
