Trivia / The Great Divorce

  • Descended Creator: In a very literal sense as Lewis plays the part of the unnamed protagonist who arrives in the Grey Town, which is an allegory for Hell itself.
  • God Never Said That: Something that got C. S. Lewis a lot a flak for, even among his avid readers, was deliberately misrepresenting the religious views of the deceased George MacDonald. George did not share Lewis's orthodox Anglican theology, and although raised as a Calvinist, held Universalist beliefs — believing there could be no true joy in heaven until all in Hell ultimately come to repentance. Lewis twisted this to have him say Hell is permanent, and its tragedy will not hold Heaven's own joy to ransom. While the author undoubtedly held a high regard for the writer, to say the least, purposefully misconstruing his core beliefs to align with his own, and make him a caricature for his book, comes off as extremely disrespectful.
