- B-Team Sequel: Sonic Team has little involvement in this game, instead being developed by SNK. Many of the people behind this game would go on to form Dimps, who go on to develop most of the handheld Sonic entries, most notably the Sonic Advance Trilogy, Sonic Rush, its sequel, and the DS version of Sonic Colors.
- Keep Circulating the Tapes: This is one of the few games in the series without a re-release of some sort.
- Screwed by the Lawyers: Implied to be the reason the game has not been rereleased or officially acknowledged by Sega. On a Q&A for his BumbleKast, Ian Flynn stated that he was barred from including or mentioning the game in the Sonic Encyclo-speed-ia book (making it one of the very few Sonic games to be entirely omitted from the book) for undisclosed legal issues. This likely stems from the fact that the game is developed and published by SNK as opposed to Sega.
- What Could Have Been:
- A couple of early sprites in a prototype cart depicts Sonic with purely black eyes instead of green as in the final game, suggesting that at some point, the game would have used Sonic’s Classic design instead of his Adventure redesign.
- Motobug was planned to be an enemy in the game◊, but he was cut from the final product.
- It's notably the only Sonic game to have scored a perfect 10/10 score from IGN as of 2022.
