YMMV / Sonic Pocket Adventure

Go To

  • Common Knowledge: It is commonly assumed that Dimps are the ones who developed the game. However, the game is actually developed by SNK and it predates Dimps' founding by two years (the game was released in 1999 and Dimps wouldn't be founded til 2001). A large part of this misconception comes from the fact that much of the development staff who worked on this game would later leave SNK to form Dimps.
  • Cult Classic: While not well known, even amongst the handheld entries, it remains beloved by many fans and is often considered to be one of the best games on the Neo Geo Pocket Color and even the best of the 8-bit Sonic games.
  • Demonic Spiders: Slicers are back and now their claws' size and tracking ability are even more deadly.
  • Fanon: While it’s never officially stated as such (not that it would matter, since the game is officially non-canon), many consider this game to be the first In-Universe appearance of the Modern/Adventure designs. It helps that Eggman is suddenly shown in his Modern design in Gigantic Angel Zone after being depicted as his Classic design for most of the game.
  • Funny Moments: Though there's no dialogue, the small cutscenes between encounters can showcase a lot of levity.
    • Sonic, after beating Knuckles after the doctor tricked him into a fight, realizes that the Hidden Palace is caving in. Knuckles, out of breath and beat up, decides to save Sonic... by uppercutting him so hard he flies out of the cave and lands on the Tornado. Sonic needs to catch his breath for possibly the first time after that.
    • After defeating Silver Sonic, it proceeds to go haywire and crash into a wall and let Sonic into the next area. Due to his idle animation consisting of a single blink as he looks between the camera and the space in front of him, it looks as if he's just kind of shocked by the event and is deciding to roll with it.
    • Before the boss fight in Gigantic Angel, Sonic wanders in and Robotnik is... lost in thought about how his new clothes look. When he realizes that Sonic is behind him, he quickly scrambles to the boss machine for the level.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The game had a two player vs. mode called "Sonic Rush". This is especially hilarious given that many of Pocket Adventure's developers would depart from SNK and go on to form Dimps, the developers of the Rush games.
  • Older Than They Think:
    • This is the first original Sonic game made on a non-Sega systemnote , two years before Sega went third party and Sonic Advance arrived on the Gameboy Advance. Funny enough, much of the team that worked on this game would go on to form the very studio behind Advance.
    • This is also the first game to exclusively (or almost exclusively) use stage themes from previous games, long before Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Sonic Generations, Sonic Mania and the Cyber Space segments of Sonic Frontiers.
  • Win Back the Crowd: As Sonic Adventure did for console gamers in the Dreamcast era after the lack of a proper Sonic game during the Saturn era, this game won handheld gamers back after the poor reception of Sonic's two previous handheld outings; the underwhelming Sonic Blast for the Game Gear, and the disastrous Game.com port of Sonic Jam.
