Trivia / Real-Time Fandub

Go To

  • Acting for Two:
    • Hayley voiced both Knuckles and Amy Rose. While it's not uncommon for the two to share a scene (they are some of Sonic's closest friends), it's pretty rare for the two to talk to each other. However, in Riders Hayley was clearly struggling to keep up with the abundance of cutscenes and dialogue the two characters share, culminating in her accidentally using Amy's voice for Knuckles (Penny saved the take by improvising a line from Sonic, who told Knuckles that he did a great Amy impression, and the gaffe was left in the final dub).
    • In the Resident Evil 2 (Remake) episode, Alfred voices Marvin "FloppyFeet" Branargh, Willian Birkin/ FloppyFeet's Chaos, and Chief Brian Irons/FloppyFeet's Bad Thoughts.
    • In the Shadow the Hedgehog dub, Holly voices both Rouge and Charmy Bee, who talk to each other in a segment taken from Sonic Heroes. This had a strange side-effect, in that at the end of a scene where she voiced Charmy, Holly started Corpsing, and was still laughing when she had to voice Rouge in the scene immediately after. Said laughter was thrown into the final cut, and actually became part of the story.
    • Everybody plays at least two characters in ''Subspace Dubbed Over.''
    • In The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog, Penny voices Prq7qe in addition to Sonic, for the understandable reason that Sonic spends most of the game out of commission and she would otherwise have very little to do. There's a scene towards the end where Sonic and Prq7qe are left alone in the dining car together, forcing Penny to carry the dub by herself for several minutes.
  • Acting in the Dark:
    • For the most part, the series runs on this: most of the cast are unfamiliar with the series they're dubbing and have no idea what's about to happen, forcing them to improvise.
    • Ryan, like the rest of the cast, didn't even know that Hatsune Miku was going to appear at all, let alone that he was meant to be voicing them, hence why Miku is silent for about ten seconds after appearing. Luckily, Scout as Storm was already in full flow and filled in the gap.
  • The Cast Showoff:
  • Corpsing: Happens constantly, with the cast cracking up at each other's jokes, though occasionally they'll crack up at their own lines as well:
    • In the Adventure 2 dub, Alfred is clearly cracking up when he threatens to shoot Amy in the face unless Sonic leaves.
    • Later, when Eggman yells "Everyone's fucked my wife!", Penny is clearly trying not to laugh as Sonic replies "Yeah, but we can fix it, I promise!", which has the side effect of making Sonic sound not the slightest bit sincere.
    • Scout manages to make it through the famous "gamer pad" scene in the Sonic 06 dub without laughing until Mephiles proclaims to be an "alpha gamer", at which point she cracks and the dub screeches to a halt for a few seconds while everyone collects themselves.
    • In the Shadow dub, Holly cracks up after delivering a bizarre Non Sequitur as Charmy. The scene then cuts to Team Chaotix meeting Team Dark - and because Holly also voices Rouge, her laughter is interpreted as Rouge laughing at the Chaotix, triggering the ensuing conflict.
    • Thanks to the Stylistic Suck of the dub, everybody is constantly breaking down into laughter in The Subspace Emissary's dub.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • While still proud of the Resident Evil 2 (Remake) dub, Leon's VA Ryan has made clear that he was uncomfortable with the "force-femme" gag.
    • Red intended for the joke of Silver in the Sonic '06 dub to be that his angst Crosses the Line Twice, but they're unsatisfied that they didn't go far enough with the joke, which instead just made it too relatable. They compared Silver to Sauerkraut, whose circumstances are much more ridiculous than what could happen in real life, making their sorrows easier to laugh at; in contrast, Silver is in a seemingly abusive relationship with Blaze and suffers from insomnia and depression, which Red found a bit too realistic to be funny.
    • While Alfred is happy with his work on the series, he dislikes it when fans repeatedly ask him to make his "pissing on the moon" bit a Running Gag for every fandub instead of letting him improvise and come up with new bits. He's only made exceptions for the Sonic 2006 and Shadow the Hedgehog dubs, with the latter having a scene where Knuckles pesters Eggman about saying the line again, despite Eggman claiming that he won't.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices:
    • The male Sonic, Bentley, Peter, and Espio are voiced by the female Penny.
    • Tye male Jet is voiced by the female Joy.
    • The male Knuckles and Sly used to be voiced by the female Hayley.
    • Hatsune Miku is voiced by Ryan.
    • Dr. Hill, Charmy Bee, Wario, King Dedede and Yoshi are voiced by Holly.
    • Silver and Ashley are voiced by Red, a Non-Binary person.
    • The male Tails used to be voiced by Blue, who goes by both male and female pronouns.
    • Every single character voiced by Scout (who goes by female and non-gendered pronouns) is male.
  • Enforced Method Acting:
    • Penny revealed that the Garry's Mod segment of the Sonic Riders dub was added to the footage the night before they started the dub recording. Only Penny and Joy, both of whom recorded the Gmod gameplay, had any knowledge that it was there, meaning the rest of the cast's reactions to the twist are completely genuine.
    • Quite a few of the voice actors have never played a Sonic game, so their reactions to Eggman blowing up the island and the space shuttle coming out of the pyramid in Sonic Adventure 2 and Babylon being raised in Sonic Riders are genuine surprise. Alfred is the most prominent and lampshades it after the aforementioned pyramid scene.
    • The original Subspace Emissary has pairs of cutscenes that are just slightly different due to the branching paths, but in the dub, every single time, both cutscenes are kept in, and the entire cast freaks out every time a cutscene supposedly "loops". Apparently only Red (as Peach and Zelda, who only make high-pitched squeaking) and Holly (as Wario, who constantly screams, "WARIO!!!! I GOTTA WIN!!!!") can make their dialogue fit the loops.
  • He Also Did: Many SnapCube's Real Time Fandub cast members are also involved in SPARKLE ON RAVEN. Dollip voices Raven, and Jet in RTFD; Mar Katoto voices Strawberry, and Tails and Vector in RTFD; Scout voices Slash, and Mephiles and The Devil in RTFD; Penny voices Dawn, and Sonic and Blaze in RTFD.
  • Meme Acknowledgement:
  • The Other Darrin:
    • As a result of their Role-Ending Misdemeanors, all of Blue and Hayley's roles were recast starting with the Sonic Destruction script reading: Mar as Tails, Scout as Knuckles, Holly as Amy, and Joy as Rouge. A few of them joke about having always been their actors, rendering their old actors Un-Persons. Holly would become Rouge's official RTFD voice as of the Shadow the Hedgehog dub.
    • In Sonic Destruction, Princess Elise is portrayed by Sophie rather than Shelby Sessler, which is likely for the more benign reason of Shelby simply not being available.
    • Rather strangely, Omega was voiced by Alfred in the 06 dub and Dyvone in the Shadow dub, despite Alfred still being in said dub. This could be to prevent Alfred from having to constantly carry scenes by himself, due to Eggman and Omega sharing a fair amount of scenes.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor: Considering the Cast Full of Gay nature of the dubs and that most of the cast is LGBTQ, this tends to happen a lot. Most notably, Alfred Coleman (who is bisexual) plays Eggman (who is also bisexual).
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor: In August 2020, Hayley Rose and Blue Lennox were both outed as manipulative abusers, resulting in their removal from ClownHouse and (subsequently) Real-Time Fandub. All of the characters they played have been recast.
  • Throw It In!:
    • As revealed by the behind-the-scenes video for the Sonic Adventure 2 dub, the gag about Shadow putting hot sauce on Twinkies and milk was derived from a personal story that Alfred told moments before they started recording the Dark Story.
    • Tails speaking with the same audio filter as Devil Doom at the end of the Shadow the Hedgehog dub was a mistake borne from their shared voice actor Mar Katoto neglecting to turn off the filter. Penny later declared on Twitter that Tails got possessed by Devil Doom.
  • What Could Have Been: The "BTDubs" behind-the-scenes videos, as well as showing the cast's warm-ups, reactions, and miscellaneous discussions, include various scenes that were left on the cutting room floor. So far, the only ones released are for the Sonic Adventure 2 dub and the Resident Evil dub.
    • Sonic Adventure 2:
      • Alfred turned his "GOING UUUUUUUUP!" line from the intro of Dark Story into a Running Gag throughout Iron Gate, then started joking about Eggman losing his mind due to getting stuck inside the building. The final dub immediately cuts from the first "GOING UUUUUUUUP!" to the Sanity Slippage.
      • Both versions of the Egg Golem boss fight were cut, with the Egg Golem itself being voiced as though it were Cr1TiKaL.
      • Ryan sang the melody of Pumpkin Hill during the majority of the gameplay scenes, to the point that the other cast members start begging him to stop. Since most of the gameplay was then cut from the dub, Shadow singing Pumpkin Hill during Sky Rail is rendered an Orphaned Punchline because it's the first time singing the song comes up in the finished product.
      • The "Flying Dog" boss fight in Security Hall degenerated into Rouge and the mecha slinging the word "Bitch" back and forth at each other. Rouge's voice actress also pointed out in a snarky tone that "Dogs don't fly!", much to Hayley's amusement.
      • The fight between Sonic and Shadow in the Dark Story mode was cut from that dub. The intro to the fight consists of them saying "Hey, that's-" at each other repeatedly before they reverse which character is saying what dialogue from the original cutscene.
      • Tails flat-out threatens to kill Eggman after defeating him in the Hero Story.
      • Knuckles practices witchcraft after Sonic tells him to "stop speaking witch" and accidentally summons King Boom Boo.
      • Shadow actually does piss in a Hot Topic, and Knuckles drowns in it.
      • The long break after the "pissing on the moon"-rant, in which Penny instructs everyone to stop recording for a second so they're absolutely certain the footage won't get lost, and Alfred talks about just how proud of himself he is for that scene.
    • The Route 101 stage is recontextualized as Tails trying to make it to the dentist he was on the phone with while Knuckles and Amy were having relationship issues, only for his appointment to keep getting pushed back.
    • Shadow The Hedgehog:
      • In a Resident Evil 4 stream, Penny revealed that she tried to get in touch with Jerma985 for the role of Black Doom before settling on Scout.
    • Subspace Dubbed Over:
      • Penny revealed on Tumblr that she was originally going to make Sonic's one line imply that he was the only character that was aware of how insane everything is. She changed it to be a Sonic Riders reference when Joy decided to make Tabuu bisexual.
      • Red specifically chose to voice Peach, Zelda and Fox because they all shared a scene on the Halberd where Peach and Sheik offer Fox some tea, but this scene was conveniently skipped over thanks to their choice to claim their mom called them over for dinner, leaving whatever they intended for that scene unknown, unless leaving mid-scene was always the plan.
  • Why Fandom Can't Have Nice Things: Not for RTFD Games itself, but Mike Pollock, the official voice actor for Eggman in the Sonic games, outright told fans to stop asking for his own rendition of the infamous "I've come to make an announcement" skit from the Sonic Adventure 2 video, later going as far to admit that he hates it and thinks it's immature. He later clarified that it's the skit he hates, not the voice actor, and he shared Alfred's medical fundraiser on social media. Mike would eventually give in, however, when he posted a Lighter and Softer St. Patrick's Day version on SoundCloud.
