Trivia / Julie and the Phantoms

Go To

  • Dawson Casting: The teenaged cast is played by actors in their early 20s. Averted with Madison Reyes and Jadah Marie, who are the same age as their respective characters, Julie and Flynn.
  • Defictionalization: Jeremy Shada actually wrote and recorded a version of Reggie's "Home Is Where My Horse Is" song.
  • Fake American: Charlie Gillespie (Luke) is from New Brunswick, Canada.
  • The Cast Showoff: All the songs are performed by the actors singing them, as well as the respective instrumentals. Owen Joyner even wrote most of his drum part in "Bright" and "Perfect Harmony" was written by Madison Reyes and Charlie Gillespie.
  • Hey, It's That Place!; A notable aversion since you'd expect "Los Feliz High School" to be John Marshall High with the serial numbers filed off, but for once that much-filmed school doesn't appear and instead a more modern urban bulding was used in establishing shots.
  • Playing Against Type: Savannah May, who often plays quirky and cheerful characters, plays Alpha Bitch Carrie.
  • Production Posse: Director Kenny Ortega also directed Descendants, bringing along with him a few actors who had roles in said film series, including Booboo Stewart, Cheyenne Jackson and Jadah Marie.
  • Screwed by the Network: Netflix cancelled the show after one season, despite the show having a moderately sized fandom that remained active and loyal during the shows' run. Netflix didn't even confirm a cancellation either, leaving the bearer of bad news to fall onto showrunner Kenny Ortega, who announced the cancellation news at a convention.
  • Those Two Actors: Owen Joyner and Savannah May previously starred together on the short-lived Nickelodeon show, Knight Squad.
  • Throw It In!: Reggie's line about the deep dish lyric in Julie's poem was ad-libbed by Jeremy Shada. Also, the boys' lines after Luke uses his fingers to pass on a kiss to Reggie is a genuine ad-libbed reaction to that moment.
    • Savannah May stated during a TikTok live that the laugh from "All Eyes On Me" was an accident in the studio from her laughing at the lyrics and they decided to keep it in the song.
  • Word of St. Paul: Alex and Reggie's surnames (Mercer and Peters) were revealed in an Instagram post shortly after the show premiered.
