YMMV / Julie and the Phantoms

Go To

  • Adorkable: Reggie, Alex, and Luke.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Trevor/Bobby: Opportunistic thief or traumatized boy whose friends died in one single night, and the only way for him to honor them was by taking their songs and making them famous?
  • Friendly Fandoms: Oddly, there seems to a fair amount of crossover between fans of this show and fans of The Umbrella Academy. This could be because, despite the two series being very tonally different, both are Netflix shows with an emphasis on found family that feature ghosts, with music as a major component.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: A Disney-esque musical fantasy featuring a love interest whose soul is owned by the villain? Hmm.
  • Ho Yay: Whenever Luke and Reggie are singing together, they look like they're inches away from making out.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Julie and the HimbosExplanation
  • Moment of Awesome: The performance of "Stand Tall" in the episode of the same name. Special mention goes to the boys' entrances; Reggie and Alex warp in no problem, but Luke falters a few times before finally materializing fully on his line, even getting a Background Halo from the projected fireworks.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Happens with Flynn in "Flying Solo". Rather than being excited that Julie got her spot back, Flynn gets jealous over Julie performing with the boys. Julie (understandably, from the audience perspective) lies to Flynn about the ghosts because she knew her friend would think she was nuts. Flynn then storms off and refuses to answer Julie or listen to her explanations later until Julie corners her outside the house later. She then goes on a rant about betrayal and trying to give Julie her Double Trouble shirt and planning on egging her house. When Julie finally blurts out the truth, Flynn's response is to immediately assume Julie is lying again or hallucinating and try to message Mr. Molina. Her overall attitude during the episode seems unfairly harsh on Julie and, considering she never actually apologizes for her treatment of Julie, comes off as far too Easily Forgiven. Especially considering that Julie does apologize for lying. Definitely made worse by the fact that she knows Julie's been struggling with her relationship to music in the past year and just gets jealous that Julie performed with someone else without telling her first.
