Fanfic is written by fans, for fans. There are several in-jokes, nods, and homages in Haunted House that may or may not go unnoticed by most readers.
- The author invents in-world reasons for all three canon iterations of Vincent's claw: the rather blocky model of the original game and figurine, the sleeker version from Advent Children, and the talon-tipped glove in Dirge of Cerberus
- 'Knightblade' was one of the many fanon surnames invented for Zack prior to Square-Enix giving him an official last name.
- The Black Mages are an actual cover band who play rock versions of Final Fantasy soundtracks.
- Given that she's a flower seller, the 1997 spelling of 'Aeris' was thought by many fans to be pronounced 'Iris'.
- Cleo (Ch ?), Irena (Ch ?), Pepper (Ch ?), and Nii (Ch ?) are all original characters who were part of the LiveJournal roleplay games 'Shinra: Year One' and 'Shinra: Year 25'.
- Cloud's mother's name- Kitty Strife- is also borrowed from 'Shinra: Year One'.
- The alternate spellings of the Remnant's names are a more literal translation of the original Japanese
