  • Crowdfunder Cameo: The names of crew members are drawn from a large random pool, with many of the names taken from names or handles of Kickstarter backers, such as Stick, Bomfy M, and Kadreal.
  • Dummied Out: By looking through the Data.dat XML files, you can see data for sectors not included in the main game, such as abandoned sectors and quarantine sectors which would reduce fleet pursuit speed like in nebula sectors, and even data left behind to show that each sector was supposed to have a unique name. There was also an additional "Ghost" race, which had 50% less health but could survive without oxygennote .
  • Stunt Casting: In a way. Some of the sector events in the Advanced Edition are written by Chris Avellone.
    • Ben Prunty composed the soundtrack, but he also made some of the sound effects. Including the male human death grunts.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The soundtrack features two Cut Songs, each of which originally had a purpose in the game:
      • "Federation" was to be the theme for the final sector, but it was not deemed climatic-sounding enough. Part of it was reworked into the new final sector theme, "Last Stand", making it a meta example of a Dark Reprise.
      • "Horror" would've been used for nebula sectors, but was found to be too scary, so it was omitted.
    • Originally, the game was going to have separate battle and exploration themes, but playtesting showed that battles only lasted 30 seconds on average. A new plan for the soundtrack would've involved a interactive soundtrack where every action adds to the music, but the composer Ben Prunty was opposed to that. After some negotiation, the resulting compromise led to the "layered" sector themes in the final version.
    • The game had some cut story concepts persisting in XML files. Ghosts were apparently once considered as an actual part of the setting and not a mere placeholder or work around for victory condition detection based upon having zero crew. Attacks by ghost ships were explicitly from being haunted by literal ghosts and not something mundane like an AI malfunction in a derelict. In addition there was a discarded event for the downright dystopian Rockmen Nurseries.
