General Fics

Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

Ghosts of the Federation, by SmoothPapaJ

  • Recommended by Black Mage, Henry42

The Little Ship That Could, by Taro8123

  • Recommended by Prolnasia
  • Status: Complete (Oneshot)
  • Synopsis: Set centuries before the events of the game, humanity has finally reached the stars. Except the stars don't seem to be very welcoming. Nobody expects much from the humans. But when faced with the impossible, the little ship that could stands in the face of adversity.
  • Takes place long before the game. Features conflict between the Federation and humans, who have recently joined the ranks. The galaxy is currently dealing with invading Lanius, with the Federation constantly engaged in warfare to push them back.

Look at Me, by StrikingLightning

  • Recommended by Prolnasia
  • Status: Complete (Oneshot)

Romance Fics
Stories focused on the romantic relationships between the cast.

Last Remains, by StrikingLightning

  • Recommended by Prolnasia
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: Rebels begin their final push into the crumbling Federation’s capital sector. Newly-promoted Captain Weir manages to steal vital Federation data in the form of DNA carried by his long-time opponent. But attraction has long since been brewing between them, and tensions are running high…It's a tale of a cat and mouse game gone awry.
  • Rating: E for a few explicit sexual scenes, though the vast majority of the story is non-smut.
  • Features a romance between a Rebel and a Federation soldier, of all things. The data has been captured by the Rebels as they invade for a killing blow. The two soldiers in question believe in their respective sides, which clash frequently despite their attraction. The story deals more with the political side effects the war brings as it comes to a close, as well as how such a relationship would play out.

Crossover Fics

Fanfiction that combines elements, characters, etc. from two or more different franchises.

FTL: Faster Than OH MY STARS by Ari Zonia {Rating was bumped up to E with the addition of chapter 8 for both explicit violence and explicit sexual scenes}

  • Recommended by: Makiki 13
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A misfit crewnote  must make their way across eight space sectors to deliver an important message to the Federation Base, and trying to avoide being blown up, or worse. All the while running from the Rebel Fleet and learning their true intentions of ruling the Galaxy.

Dark Fiction

Stories focused on making the series darker, and/or exploring the darker aspects of the series.

Breathe by Jakkar

  • Recommended by: System Cellar
  • Status: Complete (Oneshot)
  • Synopsis: "Two human males sit on trolleys in the sickbay of the Kestrel design cruiser Seething Rage." Based on a playthrough where Jakkar's crew was down to two men and there was no oxygen left. Might not be suitable for people with a phobia (more like reasonable fear) of asphyxiation.
  • Pairing(s): None

Fan Animations

FTL: Kestrel Adventures, by Andrew Colunga

  • Recommended by Mad Cormorant, Henry42
  • Status: Complete.
  • Synopsis: An animated series depicting the crew of a Kestrel as they try to deliver a critical package to the frontlines amid the Federation-Rebel war. Videos consist mostly of art assets and animation produced by the author in keeping with the general style of the game, depicting the various areas inside the ship and external environments such as space stations and planetary surface areas, combined with small amounts of gameplay footage. Voice acting is provided by the author and his family/friends, greatly expanding the characterization of the mostly faceless crewmembers from the game. The barebones backstory of the game is also enhanced with details such as the Great Mantis War that took place before the Rebellion—which ties in intimately with why the Rebellion occurred to begin with, as well as why one of the Kestrel's crew members—shown to be a high-ranking officer during the Mantis War—is now in charge of a salvage fleet.
