Trivia / Battle for Dream Island

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Most of the voice actors voice at least two characters (Barring Thomas Chick, Graham Taylor, Ian Woodside, Adam Katz, and Schazer). Because of this, there are many instances of characters with the same voice actor interacting.
  • Approval of God: Cary commented on Xploshi's video, "Four's Greatest Challenge", joking about how he "knows what the next BFB contest has to be".
  • Ascended Fanon: The team "Algebralien" was coined by fans. Later on, Cary adopted the name, confirming the species' name as official.
  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: Leafy has never used the phrase "Switcheroo, we can too!"note  It's actually "Blue Skidoo, we can too!"
  • Children Voicing Children: The Huang Twins were 12 years old when they started voicing the characters.
  • Contest Winner Cameo: Since "Lofty", the show has included "recommended characters" submitted by viewers. Early on, people could submit as many as they wanted, but as the show's popularity grew, and it became too much to animate, they limited it to just 1 character per viewer. Even then, the amount became too much, so they limited it to just 25 characters an episode. And if that wasn't enough, in BFB they removed the character cap but required you to support them on Patreon... And then even that was too much, which, combined with some mishaps with YouTube news, caused them to have to increase the price on it. By the time jacknjellify's Patreon became too much to handle and was taken down, recommended characters went with it, but then it came back, as a free Google Form which takes requests from viewers.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • Not for the animation team themselves, but for the recommended characters. Alexlion0511 very much regrets his recommended character Firey Jr., to the point of explicit celebration at his elimination in BFB 13, even voting for Firey Jr. himself. This is in stark contrast to Marker, one of his favorite characters of the series and one he even offered to voice act.
    • In actual regards to the series itself, Cary has gone on record saying that he's no longer proud of writing BFDIA 5c or IDFB.
  • Creator's Pest: Satomi, one of the writers, had a huge dislike of Nickel, and the reason his team was up for elimination three times was because she hoped that he would get voted off. Satomi then states that she regrets doing what she did and it won't happen again.
  • Crossdressing Voices:
    • Every female character voiced by Michael and Cary. note
    • BFB introduces several male characters who are voiced by females. They are: Balloony, Black Hole, Cake, Clock, Firey Jr., and Lightning. Bomby, who was originally voiced by Michael, also has a female voice actress as of BFB.
    • Pie and Lollipop share a male voice actor.
  • Development Hell: A lot of BFDIA episodes went through this, but especially BFDIA 6, which was later Saved from Development Hell and released on September 1, 2023, ten years after its planned release date.
  • Fake American: Australian Samuel Thornbury and British Niall Burns use a fake American accent for Nine and Profily respectively.
  • Follow the Leader: BFDI started the trend of "object shows" drawn in the same style and following a similar formula, most notably Inanimate Insanity.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: In countries where the Scholastic Book Fair isn't a common thing, getting your hands on a copy of the Battle for Dream Island: Official Character Guide may be extremely difficult thanks to it being exclusive to those. If you're in a school grade that's too old for the book fair, you may also be plum out of luck. However, it became available to purchase from jacknjellify's online store in January 2022.
  • The Merch: The BFDI Shop on spreadshirt, several plushies, prints on Redbubble and even a Scholastic book that covers all 64 of the BFB characters. There's quite a bit of merch, basically.
  • Milestone Celebration:
    • "Don't Lose Your Marbles" released on the show's first anniversary, features a card saying "Happy Birthday, Battle For Dream Island!" with all of the characters spinning and holding hands.
    • The same was done for the third anniversary, but with more characters and various props from previous episodes.
    • The 4 year anniversary had "Thanks for 4 years".
    • The 8 year anniversary had "Thanks for 4 years of Thanks for 4 years".
    • The 12 year anniversary had "Thanks for 4 years of Thanks for 4 years of Thanks for 4 years".
    • BFB's first anniversary had "Happy Birthday BFB".
    • The 9th year anniversary had a BFDI 1 map.
    • The 10th year anniversary was mentioned in "BFDI's road to half a million views".
    • BFDIA's 8th anniversary had a BFDIA 1 map.
    • IDFB's 4th anniversary had an IDFB map.
    • They also released celebration videos for 2,500, 3,000, 6,000, and 20,000 subscribers, as well as one for 10 million views,
    • Also, they've been doing a number mini series with thanks for 600,000, 700,000, 800,000, 900,000, and 1,000,000 subscribers.
  • Missing Episode:
    • A strange case. BFDIA 5b was released as a game, not a cartoon. However, the game only updated a few levels at a time, and stopped once they released around half, leaving some major plot holes. Since 2020, Flash has been discontinued, and the odds are 5b might not see the light of day.
    • BFDIA 6 has its FLAs but they've never been released. It would remain missing for 10 whole years until it was finally released in 2023.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • Tennis Ball, currently voiced by Cary, was originally voiced by Michael.
    • Ruby was voiced by Michael in the first 2 seasons, then starting in Season 3, Ruby was voiced by Cary.
    • Needle has had the most voice actors, with a total of five. From BFDI to BFDIA 4, she was voiced by Cary, but because it became impossible to voice her (due to how high the voice was), the role was given to someone whose name has yet to be identified from BFDIA 5 to IDFB. Before IDFB's release, however, YouTuber Justthebomb got the chance to voice Needle in the short, BFDI Is Back. Starting with BFB 1, Needle was voiced by Satomi (who voiced Ice Cube in BFB 1 and would later return to the role in BFB 13), but in BFB 2, Kenzie took over (the latter also voiced Ice Cube from BFB 2-13).
    • Like Needle, Ice Cube was also originally voiced by Cary, but because her voice was too high-pitched, she was voiced by YouTuber MaximumPower2002 in BFDIA 5a. Come BFB, the role was given to Satomi and Kenzie, as mentioned above.
    • Starting with BFB 24, Gelatin, who had been voiced by Graham Taylor for nearly 8 years, had his voice replaced with Ian Woodside, as Graham had moved on from the show to do more big-name acting careers.
    • Bomby was originally voiced by Michael, and is currently voiced by Satomi.
  • Promoted Fanboy:
    • SuperScratchKat, who did a couple of fan animations for the show, became an animator since "Fortunate Ben". However, Scratch left the BFB crew in October 2018.
    • The crew's sound designer Amor and CGI specialist Maroue also have fan origins.
    • Niall Burns/Xany Leaves is a YouTube fan who had produced the popular BFDI-based series Object Overload. As of BFB 13, he is now an animator for the BFB crew. He also provides the voices of Profily and Two.
    • Samuel Thornbury, a longtime BFDI fan, became a writer in early 2020.
    • British web musician Boyinaband is a fan of Cary's A.I. videos on his solo channel, and ended up being brought on board to voice Portable Music Player in BFB 23.
  • Referenced by...: "Eliminating BFDI" plays in "Mario Party 4 is a skill based game" from the Party Crashers when Koopa Troopa starts dancing during the game's opening cutscene.
  • Schedule Slip: The show started out releasing episodes on a consistent, once a month schedule. BFDIA 3 was then released was then released just 15 days after BFDIA 2 on August 15, 2012, which seemed to lead to the schedule being bi-monthly, with BFDIA 4 set to release on September 1, 2012. Afterwards...
    • Due to the negative response to BFDIA 3's rushed length, they announced the show would be monthly again, with BFDIA 4 released on September 15, 2012. However, the day it was supposed to come out, Michael announced that it was postponed indefinitely, due to school as well as illness. Cary filled the void by starting an official "BFDI camp", entitled B.A.G.U.E.T.T.E. A sneak peek was released the following day. Soon after, Michael announced that the show was back in development, with BFDIA 4 released on October 15, 2012. However, that day came and went. BFDIA 4 finally released on November 1, 2012, with BFDIA 5 said to release on December 1, 2012. It was then delayed until December 12, 2012. BFDIA 5 was then pushed back again, to January 1, due to so much being packed in it ended up clocking in at 25 minutes.
    • Then, they announced the episode would be split into two parts, with part 1 released on January 1 and part 2 on February 1. Part 1 released as scheduled, but Part 2 was released on February 11, due to it being changed to a game. However, a third part was then announced, and released in April. They then went on a hiatus. Parts 4 and 5 of the episode would finally be released in July and August. BFDIA 6 was said to release on September 1. However, they announced a break from BFDI on August 27, 2013. For a long time after that, BFDIA 6 was in Development Hell, despite new content still being released, and promises of a return. It would take a total of 10 years before BFDIA 6 was officially released.
    • Finally, on September 1, 2016, the show came back, under the name IDFB, which has a different sitcom premise, with no challenges. Then episode two of that was pushed to November 1st, and then again until December 1st, and then again with no established deadline... And then cancelled with the premiere of BFB, the fourth season.
    • BFB's schedule quickly changed from being fortnightly to monthly, with episodes from BFB 8 onwards at least being at least five weeks apart. BFB 12 became infamous for nearly taking two months to release, and BFB 13 broke that record not long after; the gap being nearly 12 months since BFB 12's release and the longest without any seasons being cancelled. Cary has stated that these delays are because the team is trying to readjust a number of internal matters and that episodes should restart coming out at a quicker pace once they get themselves sorted.
    • Issues with rendering the intro meant that the crew could only begin uploading the first episode of TPOT when there were only two time zones left in the world that were still on its intended release date of January 9, 2021.
    • Initially, it was assumed that BFDIA 6 was cancelled, as the show had moved on to IDFB, which was then cancelled in and of itself for BFB and TPOT, but a new BFDIA 6 would release ten years from its original release date of September 1st 2013.
  • Science Imitates Art: 10003 Caryhuang is an asteroid named after Cary Kaiming Huang, one of the co-creators.
  • Sequel Gap: Originally, BFDIA 6 was supposed to release on September 1st 2013. However, it wasn't completed thanks to a variety of factors getting in the way, with the few elements jacknjellify completed of it being uploaded. Ten years later from that release date, it would be remade and released.
  • Troubled Production:
    • The culmination of the increasing gaps between episodes of BFB culminated in the jacknjellify crew suffering from major structural redevelopment during the production of BFB 13 in the latter half of 2018, not at all helped by the episode gradually increasing in length as time went on. Satomi estimated in early 2019 that it would be longer than 17 minutes, and then with the release date trailer in early July that year Michael announced that not only was it about double the length of a usual episode, it was only the first half of the original idea, with the slightly longer BFB 14 due to come out four weeks afterwards and finish its challenge akin to what happened with BFDIA 5. Effectively, the duology is as long as what would have happened if four normal-length episodes were each released three months apart.
    • After her dismissal from jacknjellify, Satomi confessed to being responsible for the troubled production issues that caused serious delays in late pre-split BFB episodes and TPOT episodes, with her creative input causing serious "conflicts" according to her.
  • Un-Canceled: Thanks to a combination of Creator Backlash, jacknjellify's AdSense being disabled, and personal projects getting in the way, BFDIA was all but confirmed to be cancelled, with BFDIA 6 never coming to fruition. However, exactly 10 years after it was originally meant to come out, BFDIA 6 was finally completed and released to the public, bringing BFDIA out of cancellation.
  • Uncredited Role: No voice credits are given for the Spanish dub, and only a handful of the voice actors have been confirmed to have worked on the show (namely Abraham Toscano as Pen, Diego Becerril as Snowball, and Carlos Barragán as four unknown characters).
  • What Could Have Been: Has it's own page.
  • Word of God:
    • According to Michael on Discord, the reason as to why 2,763 was chosen as the series' Arc Number is because of the amount of siblings per lineage in their family tree by male child. (I.E. 2 siblings in Cary & Michael's lineage, 7 siblings in their father's lineage, 6 siblings in their grandfather's lineage, and 3 siblings in their great-grandfather's lineage)
    • In BFB 29, it is revealed that the Announcer ran BFDIA from behind the scenes but cancelled the season in response to things getting out of hand, but as of September 2023 it has been un-cancelled. According to Sam, the rest of the season will be run "unofficially" without the Announcer's involvement, as he leaves at the start of BFDIA 6 after talking to Firey Speaker Box.
