As a Moments subpage, all spoilers are unmarked as per policy. You Have Been Warned.
  • Some of the psychopaths can garner sympathy:
    • Zhi, after he is defeated, reveals how he became the way he is. He laments that he lost his job, his wife left him for another man, and his children grew to disrespect him. It's rather saddening to know that a regular man who lost everything in his life has fallen into such despair that he goes insane.
    • Jherii, after being taken down a peg by Nick, tries to restore her confidence by repeating the motivational words that were played on her radio: "You are worthy, you are unique, you deserve happiness" while facing her trophy stand, which ends up crushing her. Just hearing the sadness in her voice can make one feel pity for her.
    • Kenny is also a little pitiful. His main motivation for imitating Nick is so that he can become a hero like him because he was too weak to save any of his friends.
    • Heck, even Teddy could count. Nick essentially trespasses in his mansion and demands for his key. Once Nick finally gets to him, he begs Nick not to hurt him before panicking and dying of a heart attack.
    • Darlene manages to be depressing in a sort of "people this fat exist" way. Though considering she stabs a guy to death over a burger, there's a pretty significant lack of sympathy.
  • One of the survivor missions involves an old woman with terminal cancer, wanting to take one last look around the city and reminisce. One stop on the trip is to the cemetery, where she talks about her son who died because they were too poor to afford Zombrex. The last goal involves taking her back to her home, where she goes upstairs and immediately dies.
  • Another mission has you try to reunite a Southern woman with her family. The tragic part is that when you bring her to their home, she finds her entire family zombified, and it's rather heart-breaking to see her so distraught after she was so eager to see them.
    • The ending makes it even more heart-breaking. The final instruction Nick receives is to kill the girl's zombified family. Right in front of her. It's a Mercy Kill, sure, but it would still be traumatic for anyone.
  • Some of the sidequests are just as bad. One notable instance is Speed Freak, wherein Nick has to beat a guy named Derek in a race. When you win at the end, he opens a gun store and shows a trophy room filled with his old stuff, then laments that he was never fast enough for the things that mattered; he couldn't save his wife, he couldn't save his daughter, and now he's snapped, obsessed with being fast.
  • Diego being horrifically killed by the virus all while Nick is forced to watch. And what does Diego do while wasps and larvae burst out of his body? Scream for Nick to help him.
