Sandbox / Palette Swap Wick Check

Go To

Palette Swap refers to when a single character design is recolored and presented as a completely different character, or used to distinguish players in games where there's a single player character design.

Wicks: 70/70

    open/close all folders

The same design is presented in different color patterns as different characters, or recolors are used to distinguish players if they pick the same character (22/70)
  • Bakugan: Several of the non-guardian Bakugan have the same name and model as another Bakugan with a different attribute, with their colour scheme varying depending on their attribute.
  • Beast Wars Neo: Most of the later Maximals and Predacons are actually redecos of some American toys.
  • Cartoon Network: Punch Time Explosion: In addition to the usual red and black villains like Father, Aku and HIM being playable, corrupted characters in the story mode are depicted as being varying shades of red and black and are much more vicious and willing to work with villains. Every character also has a "corrupted" Palette Swap, even if they weren't taken over in the story mode.
  • Crazy Candies (under Identical Grandson): Season 2 episode 15 shows that Elva's ancestors, who have been entering in the Candy Jar's sweetest candy competition for a century, are all just Palette Swaps of her.
  • Digimon Battle Spirit: During Mirror Matches, the enemy's sprite will be recolored to tell it apart from your Digimon. The extra versions of Agumon, Guilmon, Agunimon, and Lobomon also have slightly different color schemes than their regular counterparts, freeing up the standard sprites for the computer to use in their respective Mirror Matches.
  • Digimon Data Squad E6 "The Ultimate Team No More?": The Garurumon in this episode is the black virus-attribute variant.
  • Digimon Frontier E 11 Defeat Me Legendary Warrior Vritramon Goes Wild: Shamamon. He's basically a Goblimon with darker skin.
  • Digimon Frontier E24 "Alone But Never Alone": Junpei's Enemy Without appears as a dark gray version of Junpei's Digimon forms. This also applies to their attacks: Junpei's attacks all use yellow lightning while his Enemy Without uses blue lightning.
  • Digimon Fusion E14 "Showdown in the Sand Zone!": HiMugendramon is just a red version of Mugendramon.
  • Digimon ReArise: Several Digimon have recolored versions with different stats. There are anniversary versions of both forms of Rasenmon and of Jesmon as well as recolors of WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon to commemorate the end of the storyline. There are also Battle Park recolors of four of the Royal Knights that are prizes for attaining high rankings in the Battle Park.
  • Evolution: Enemies in a particular dungeon tend to get recolors further in. At the very least, they tend to get different skills than their originals.
  • Fire Emblem Warriors: Enemy Captains are given different colors and names to match whichever nation or world that they are from. For example, the infantry swordsman Captain is called a Myrmidon most of the time, but is called a Samurai if they're Hoshidan, or called a Mercenary if they are Nohrian.
  • Happy Heroes (under Battle in the Center of the Mind): Season 2 episode 38 has Doctor H. and the heroes go inside Careless S.'s mind to remove two CPUs he implanted in him that are making him smart enough to stay annoyingly one step ahead of everything. The CPUs happen to be represented by palette swapped Careless S.'s who wind up fighting the heroes.
  • The Lordz o' Flys: In episode 7, the boys play a video game featuring brown and olive green-skinned versions of Czesio as enemies and Shigella, a red-clad, green-skinned, red-haired version of Ms. Frał.
  • The Loud House S1E23 "One of the Boys / A Tattler's Tale": The gender-bent Mom and Dad are basically just themselves with their outfit colors swapped.
  • Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S2E38 A Reel Fish Story: The Tube Monster is clearly Pipebrain repainted, though this was also in Dairanger where the Tube Monster's counterpart was the last enemy shown being defeated by the Dairangers' grandchildren. For bonus points, he's even voiced by Pipebrain's voice actor, Brad Orchard.
  • Noonbory and the Super 7: The Builder Borys all have the same design, just in different colors.
  • One Piece Stampede: Most of the Supernovas' "new" outfits are just color-changed versions of their usual ones. Same goes for several other characters as well.
  • Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf: Wolffy's grandfather Yellow Wolf looks exactly like Wolffy, but colored yellow instead of gray.
  • Power Rangers Ninja Storm S1E22 All About Beevil: [Marah's] "Pink Ranger" outfit is a recolor of the Blue Ranger's, complete with the exact same dolphin-tail emblem.
  • Samurai Pizza Cats: The American Pizza Cats' counterpart to Francine is Abigail, who looks just like her except with slightly different coloring.
  • VideoGames.Non Standard Character Design: Skullgirls has Peacock, who is drawn in a way similar to 30's cartoons while other characters have an Animesque design. Nearly all of her body was horribly mutilated and has been replaced and reconstructed with robotics, with the addition of reality-warping weapons systems. It probably helps that Pea herself is a big fan of old cartoons. A few of her alternate palettes remove her shading, making her stand out even more.
  • Vinterkrigen: The leader is what happens when you take Per, press ctrl+i in Photoshop and give him beige skin again.
  • Characters.Nier Automata: His character model is just 9S with dark hair instead of white-blonde.

There are more design differences than just the colors (30/70)
  • Adventure Ponies!: Gameplay wise, Rarity is exactly the same as Twilight Sparkle. Somewhat glaring, since not only is she the only palette swap, the others at least use abilities resembling the ones that they have in the show. Still strange though, especially since Applejack or even Rainbow Dash's attacks would fit better since Rarity has usually been depicted fighting with her bare hooves on the show, using what might be some kind of pony martial arts.
    • It doesn't help that we have more evidence of Pinkie Pie being able to teleport than Rarity.
    • Also gameplay wise, Big Macintosh and Zecora, Shining Armor and Fancy Pants, and Soarin and Spitfire, all of whom play like Applejack, Twilight/Rarity, and Rainbow Dash, respectively. Ignoring the first subbullet that is just natter, all the other examples are more fitting under Moveset Clone since the character sprites have distinct designs that differ beyond their color schemes
  • Digimon E 48 Bombing Mission Mugendramon: Megadramon and Gigadramon have very similar designs, with the major differences being their color palette and the fact that Gigadramon has mechanical wings. If the wings are different, it's not just a palette swap
  • Characters.Digimon Champion Digimon A To M:
    • (referring to Citramon) Basically an orange BomberNanimon with a stem instead of a fuse. All of its other features are identical. Stem instead of a fuse = not just a palette swap
    • (referring to DarkTyrannomon) It's a black recolor of Tyrannomon. Unlike most versions of this trope in the franchise, it does have a slightly different body structure with a more humanoid chest and much larger foreclaws. Sometimes it'll share model animations with Tyrannomon and sometimes it will get its own. Different body structure = not just a palette swap
    • (Referring to Hyogamon) A blue version of Ogremon with a single horn and wielding an ice crystal instead of a bone. Single horn and different weapon = not just a palette swap
  • Characters.Digimon Champion Digimon N To Z:
    • (referring to ShimaUnimon): A Unimon redone to have zebra stripes and no wings. No wings = not just a palette swap
  • Digimon Frontier E18 "Trailmon vs. Trailmon": Piddomon is an Angemon with pink leather instead of blue and a single pair of wings instead of three. Less wings than the original, so not just a palette swap
  • Characters.Digimon Mega Digimon A To M:
    • (referring to KingWhamon): Aside from the island it carries, its body looks like a white version of Whamon. Despite this, it has no connection to Hookmon. The island on its head is enough of a difference to make it not just a palette swap
  • Characters.Digimon Rookie Digimon:
    • (referring to Betamon X-Antibody): Aside from a couple of extra fins and spikes on its legs, it's just a more bluish version of the regular Betamon. The extra details mean it's not just a palette swap
  • Digimon Tamers E 33 Wheres Terriermon Shaochung Goes To The Digital World (in the episode description) : A light appears from far away and hits Andiramon, causing him to revert to his lower form Lopmon...who turns out to be a slightly modified Palette Swap of Terriermon. The description clearly says it's slightly modified (more precisely it has three horns instead of two and a single cute little fang), therefore it's not just a palette swap
  • Characters.Digimon Ultimate Digimon M To Z:
    • (Referring to Tekkamon): It's Giromon, only purple and missing the horns. If it's missing the horns is not just a palette swap
  • Iggy's Reckin' Balls: Except for the ponytails, Lizzy is simply a blue Iggy. She even has the same voice lines, simply pitched up (except in the Japanese version where she gets her own voice actress). If she has pigtails, then she's not just a palette swap
  • Micronauts: Baron Karza is pretty blatantly Kotetsu Jeeg, except black and red and with a slightly different head. The comic design is somewhat different, but the toy is for all intents and purposes a repainted Jeeg, down to the magnetic joint-based Detachment Combat and a centaur mode. The fact that the head is different means it's not a Palette Swap
  • Mighty Morphin Power Rangers S 3 EP 2 A Friend In Need Part 2: Repellator is basically Silver Horns painted green with a tongue inserted. The tongue wasn't part of the original design, therefore it's not just a palette swap
  • Characters.Transformers Generation 1 Autobots 1984 To 1985:
    • (Referring to Ratchet): He shares the same body structure with Ironhide, but he's clad in white with red elements, has his alt-mode repurposed into an ambulance with a siren, and has different head shape. Siren and different head shape mean he's not just a palette swap
    • (Referring to Grapple): It's difficult to determine who came first without consulting the original Diaclone line, but Grapple is a recoloring of Inferno. In addition, Grapple exchanges the cherrypicker, hose, and decorative wings in robot mode for a bulky crane arm, complete with a hook. All those differences mean it's not just a palette swap
    • (Referring to Hoist): To Trailbreaker. In addition to becoming green and orange with safety stripes, Hoist eschews Trailcutter's rear canopy for towing equipment. Changes part of the vehicle, not just a palette swap
    • (Referring to Smokescreen): Of Bluestreak. Smokescreen not only has a new color scheme, but his car mode has a larger front fender. He was also given a rear spoiler, a trait usually unique to him until many later toys gave it to Prowl and Bluestreak. Larger front fender and addition of rear spoiler mean that it's not just a palette swap
  • Characters.Transformers Generation 1 Autobots 1986 To 1987:
    • (Referring to Hubcap): Of Cliffjumper. Hubcap lacks the rear spoiler, and he received a new head. No rear spoilers and new head, then it's not just a palette swap
    • (Referring to Outback): Of Brawn. Outback received not just a new head, but a roof-mounted gun. New head, then not just a palette swap
    • (Referring to Pipes): Of Huffer. Pipes' changes are so extensive, that he changes how the original figure transforms. What used to be Huffer's back is now sculpted to be Pipes' front. The exhaust pipes (themselves retooled to be cylindrical) are now oriented beneath the shoulders in robot mode. If the changes are so extensive that the transformation is different, it's not just a palette swap
    • (Referring to Swerve): Of Gears. Swerve received a new head that bears shades. New head means it's not just a palette swap
    • (Referring to Tailgate): The original Tailgate toy is a white-colored Windcharger with a new head and faceplate. With his MMTE-inspired Thrilling 30 figure, it's the other way around; the Combiner Wars Windcharger toy is a retool of him. New head and mentions precisely the word "retool", so... not just a palette swap
  • Characters.Transformers Generation 1 Decepticons:
    • (Referring to Exhaust): He's a retool of Wheeljack in homage to the original Diaclone toy used to make him. Retool = not just a palette swap
    • (Referring to Nightbird): Her first toy was a retool of the 30th anniversary Arcee toy. Her only other toy is likewise one of Siege Chromia, though only the head is a different piece, compared to the first toy. Retool and different head means it's not just a palette swap
  • Characters.Transformers Generation 1 Decepticons 1984 To 1985:
    • (Referring to Dirge): Like all Seekers, he's a recolored Starscream. However, as part of the Conehead trio, Dirge has a pointy head, formed by leaving the jet mode's nosecone up when transformed. Succeeding toys adopted the Conehead design in different ways. Dirge also has a distinct set of wings — specifically, delta wings with a front canard — which he keeps oriented downward when transformed. Notably, he's the only Seeker to lack rear stabilizers of any sort. Different wings means it's not just a palette swap
    • (Referring to Ramjet): Like all Seekers, he's a recolored Starscream. However, as part of the Conehead trio, Ramjet has a pointy head, formed by leaving the jet mode's nosecone up when transformed. Succeeding toys adopted the Conehead design in different ways. Ramjet also has a distinct set of wings — specifically, delta wings adorned with ramjet engines — which he keeps oriented downward when transformed. Again, different wings therefore not just a palette swap
    • (Referring to Thrust): Like all Seekers, he's a recolored Starscream. However, as part of the Conehead trio, Thrust has a pointy head, formed by leaving the jet mode's nosecone up when transformed. Succeeding toys adopted the Conehead design in different ways. Thrust also has a distinct set of wings — specifically, VTOL wings and a thin set of rear stabilizers — which he keeps oriented downward when transformed. Guess what
  • LaserBlade.Video Games: Warframe has the Gram, a Tenno BFS which uses a blade made of plasma on each side of the weapon to cleanly slice enemies to bits. Its smaller brother, the Plasma Sword, functions pretty much identically (and originally, the Gram was just a giant version of the Plasma Sword). The "Ether" weapons (scythe, daggers, swords) use an Absurdly Sharp Blade made from plasma.
  • The Wonderful World of Puss 'n Boots (under Expy): The biggest bandit looks exactly like a Palette Swap version of Lucifer the Ogre, but with the addition of a cowboy hat and bandana. And Annie herself looks like a more humbly-dressed Princess Rosa with a ponytail. different outfits and hairstyles = not just palette swaps

    ZCE/General misuse/Other stuff (18/70)
  • Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger: the first three Bakuryuu go through this when they are brought under control.
  • Awesome.Baten Kaitos: Savyna and Azdar fighting the Palette Swap of Fadroh in the desert.
  • Dan Vs S 1 E 18 Dan Vs Dan: A few artists from "Dan Vs Art" reappear. ????
  • Characters.Destiny The Hive: She's one for Omnigul, right down to the horns. Interestingly, all the other Deathsingers we see (sans Oryx's daughters) look identical to her.
  • Characters.Digimon Champion Digimon N To Z:
    • (Referring to Sistermon Ciel): Ciel was introduced as a total replacement of Noir (including the same abilities) in Western releases of Hacker's Memory to avoid heat from the Moral Guardians over introducing a sexy nun-type Digimon to children, with the lore stating Ciel is the unseen Noir's twin sister. The official Bandai Twitter then rolled with this, giving Ciel a separate weapon and abilities, and it even got a minor appearance in Digimon Ghost Game, meaning it is considered an official Digimon. The example fails to mention how she is a palette swap of Sistermon Noir, but it's mentioned she has a different weapon than Noir (and while not mentioned she also has different animal ears on her veil and a different haircut), therefore she is not just a palette swap
  • Digimon Frontier E44 "Now You See It, Now You Don't": Insekimon is one of Gotsumon.
  • Characters.Digimon Mega Digimon A To M:
    • (referring to GigaBreakdramon: Completely blank ZCE
  • Characters.Digimon Mega Digimon N To Z:
    • (referring to ShineGreymon Ruin Mode): Of Burst Mode. ZCE
  • Characters.Digimon Rookie Digimon:
    • (referring to Fake Agumon Expert): A variant of Agumon Hakase that's blue instead of orange and with black robes instead of white. While this may look like a correct example, it's actually completely wrong: the two designs have more evident differences. The regular Agumon Hakase/Expert wears a white labcoat and holds a regular pointer stick, while Fake wears a black graduation cloak with a collar and tie shaped to look like a row of teeth and a tongue and holds a bat-shaped pointer stick
  • Digimon Xros Wars: In the story itself this trope actually manages to throw off the Royal Knights. ZCE
  • Dragon Cave: A few dragons, such as dorsals and coppers, have alternate colors while their sprites remain the same. There are also spriter's alts, which are alternate colored dragons that only the spriters of each dragon own.
  • Haitai Nanafa: The characters tend to change colors for no clear reason.
  • Kamen Rider Agito: Several of the Unknowns, typically to show that they're related somehow.
  • Littlest Pet Shop: Friends: The bear, butterfly, horse (or zebra), and ladybug have different color schemes depending on what version of the game is played.
  • SkyDrift: The game consists of a single-player tournament and various online options, with quick, player and custom matches available. The tournament has a linear series of stages, where completing a certain number of events in a stage will unlock the next one, though you need not finish them all (though doing so unlocks new liveries for the planes).
  • Sugar Rush Speedway: Four of them.
  • Tobot: Great Tobot X, Shield-On Tritan, Shield-On X, Shield-On Y, Anti-Flame W, Black Quatrannote
    • With the sole exception of Titan (which may be a case of Early-Installment Weirdness), all Tobots change colors when combining. First bullet is ZCE, the second doesn't sound like this trope
  • NightmareFuel.Yokai Watch: Her counterpart, Sandi, has the opposite effect: making people sleep so she can play with them in their dreams, with the implication that they're having so much fun together that they basically refuse to wake up. Unlike Insomni, however, it's said that this only lasts six months.
