Recap / Total Drama: "Truth or Laser Shark"

Go To

The contestants must reveal embarrassing information about themselves to win a challenge. After much protest, this challenge is discontinued and replaced with a brutal obstacle course. Dakota's preoccupation with fame loses the challenge for the Toxic Rats, leading to her elimination.

Tropes:

  • Ascended to Carnivorism: As part of their mutation, the mutant beavers are now carnivorous.
  • Astonishingly Appropriate Interruption: An early morning challenge in the second episode of Revenge of the Island causes Dakota to complain she needs her beauty sleep.
Sam: Come on, you look g-(Dakota takes off her sunglasses, revealing her baggy, bloodshot eyes) -REAT SUNS OF ORION!!
  • Artifact Title: The episode's title comes from an earlier script, when Fang the shark was originally going to be able to shoot lasers as part of his mutations.
  • Big Red Button: Chris has one that dunks the contestants if they fail to own up, or in B(everly)'s case, don't respond verbally.
  • Blatant Lies: Mike jumps on the bandwagon of abandoning the humiliating secrets game-but not because he has any secrets to hide, of course!
  • Blind Without 'Em: Inverted. Most of the characters see fine normally, but Chris gives them all specs that make their vision far worse in the second part of the challenge, though he originally planned to only give them to the team that lost the first part.
  • Digging Yourself Deeper: Cameron does this when arguing with Jo about the secrets that they might have, in which he completely humiliates himself.
  • Embarrassing First Name: B's full first name is Beverly.
  • Exhausted Eye Bags: Dakota has a poor sleep due to Dawn's conversations with the local fauna. Come challenge time and she has major bags under her eyes that she initially tries to hide with sunglasses.
  • Groin Attack: How Zoey saves herself from the giant mutant beavers.
  • Implausible Deniability: Cameron asks Mike how he effortlessly did the obstacle course. Mike, upon realizing he must have just turned into Svetlana, says this:
    Huh? Uh...do what?
  • It's Personal: Fang really doesn't like it when his tooth is taken away from him.
  • Mistaken for Gay: When Scott returns to the Toxic Rats' cabin covered in dirt (after being chased by a mutant beaver while looking for the immunity idol), he lies and says he just came back from "an early-morning makeout session with one of the honeys." When Lightning asks who he made out with, Scott responds with "A gentleman doesn't kiss and tell." to which Sam responds "You kissed a gentleman?"
  • Mood Whiplash: When Zoey hands Mike the mutant maggot, their hands meet and romantic music plays as they gaze into each others eyes...cue maggot vomiting on Mike's face.
  • Potty Failure: Brick reveals that he wet his pants on his first and last days of school.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is a play on the game "truth or dare".
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Both relays that the contestants are given have red eyes on them.
  • Sadistic Choice: The contestants are either forced to own up to their embarrassing secrets, or get dunked and face off with a enormous mutant shark.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Several campers attempt to leave the quiz midway through: Scott tries to abandon his team after they fail to save him from Fang, Anne Maria tries to leave after Scott, Sam wants to leave after being humiliated, and Mike joins in fear of his disorder being revealed. The campers argue so much that Chris is forced to skip forwards to the next challenge.
  • Ship Tease: Sam and Dakota.
  • Shout-Out: The obstacle course takes many elements from Wipeout.
  • Team Killer: Scott reveals this is his strategy so the other campers will let their guard down and be easier to pick off.
