Recap / Total Drama: "Bigger! Badder! Brutal-er!"

Go To

13 new campers arrive at a now-toxic Camp Wawanakwa. Friendships and rivalries are formed, and the Toxic Rats team is the first to eliminate a contestant.

Tropes:

  • Air Quotes: During a confessional, Brick mentions all the cadet training medals he earned for three years in a row: one for teamwork, one for bed-making, one for "flag-folding", and one for letters home to mom. He makes air quotes when he mentions the one for "flag-folding".
  • Big "NO!": Owen can clearly be heard delivering one when the yacht sails past Wawanakwa, indicating that the original cast would not be returning to compete.
  • Bird-Poop Gag: While on the boat to bring them back to Camp Wawanakwa, Justin is posing as he usually does, but the glamour gets sabotaged by a bird dropping poop on his shoulder.
  • Bitch Alert: The first thing Jo does is threaten Scott. The second thing she does, after the boat is blown up, is show off her athletic skills with no regards for others. She knocks away the plank Staci uses to stay afloat and uses Sam as a jumping off point.
  • Blatant Lies: When the Maggots accidentally blow up the Rats' much nicer cabin, Chris tells the Rats their replacement cabin is just as good as the one that was destroyed. Their replacement cabin is just as good as...the losing Maggots' cabin.
  • The Cameo: The first-generation campers at the beginning. Owen gets a slightly larger cameo later on in the episode, being blown off before meeting the new contestants.
  • Crocodile Tears: Dakota tries to curry audience sympathy by pretending to cry in the confessional after Chris makes fun of her for being attacked by a mutated squirrel. She throws out the first take to make sure she's still looking good while crying, then orders a second take.
  • Demoted to Extra: The entire first-generation cast when their yacht passes the camp.
  • Everyone Meets Everyone: The second-generation campers meet for the first time here.
  • Establishing Character Moment:
    • Shorter than the ones in the first episodes of Island, but just as effective.
    • Chester gets his later in the episode, which also establishes Mike's MPD.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: It’s evident some time has passed since World Tour, since Heather's hair is now back to its original length, and Sierra now has a full head of hair (albeit much shorter) under a baseball cap after it was burned off in the previous season.
  • Ghostly Glide: Dawn levitates to the finish line, which at the same time frightens Mike.
  • Foreshadowing: When we first meet him, Mike mentions having a "quirk". This foreshadows his Multiple Personality Disorder.
  • Human Ladder: Six of the Toxic Rats are catapulted on top of each other by seventh member B in order to reach the rope holding up their totem pole and cut it down. Their order from the bottom up is: Sam, Staci, Scott, Lightning, Dawn, and Dakota.
  • Introdump: This episode introduces the 13 second-generation campers of the series.
  • Jump Scare: Happens to Mike when Dawn levitates to the finish line.
  • The Load: Staci. Part of the reason she gets voted out.
  • Love at First Sight: Mike and Zoey take a liking to one another the second they catch each other's eyes.
  • Motor Mouth: The reason Staci gets voted out, as her lack of knowing when to shut up irritated the other campers.
  • Plot Hole: Mutant Maggots win the challenge solely for destroying the Toxic Rats' cabin with the explosion of their totem. However, the challenge was about bringing the totem to the camp site before its bomb explodes, which the Maggots failed to do while the Rats actually succeeded in. Given Chris' attitude toward rules this is to be expected.
    • Furthermore, Maggots' totem explodes several seconds after Rats', even though both teams' timers were started at the same time and had the same countdown.
  • Seesaw Catapult: The challenge for the teams is to reach up to their team totem hanging from a tree and cut it loose. Climbing isn't working out, so B cobbles together a seesaw and sequentially invites each of his teammates on it. He personally launches each of them up onto a Human Ladder until the one on the top reaches the totem.
  • Ship Tease: There are some early signs that Mike and Zoey are interested in each other.
  • Shout-Out: Dakota's desire to have a mutated squirrel parallels Veruca Salt in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: A Running Gag in this episode.
  • Understatement: Not knowing how to break it to the audience, Mike refers to his Multiple Personality Disorder as a "quirk."
  • Walk, Don't Swim: Presumably due to his coat filled with tools, B's weight makes him sink to the bottom of the lake when the boat is blown up. He makes the best of it and walks over to shore, picking up Cameron along the way.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: Staci.
  • Wham Line: "This season we've got all NEW players!"
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: It's unknown what happened to Owen after he gets blown away.
  • Writers Cannot Do Math: The timers on both teams' totems are set at the same time. However, Mutant Maggots' totem ends up exploding several seconds after both timers run up.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: The Old Campers to Chris.
