Recap / 30 Rock S2 E2 "Jack Gets in the Game"

Go To

When Don Geiss signals that he might retire, Jack and Devon jockey for position to replace him. Meanwhile, Liz tries to regain control over her life, and Jenna weighs some extreme options for losing weight.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Jenna asks Liz if she can sing and roller-dance on the show. Jane Krakowski played Dinah the Dining Car in Starlight Express, which required her to sing and dance while on roller skates.
  • Brick Joke: Jack asks Liz to eat a steak while he watches at the start of the episode (due to his heart condition, he can't eat red meat for a while). He asks Geiss' granddaughter to eat a hamburger while he watches at the end of the episode.
  • Church of Happyology: The Church of Practicology makes another appearance, as Devon turns to it in order to repress his homosexuality.
Jack: You mean the cult invented by Stan Lee?
Devon: No. I mean the religion founded by the alien king living inside Stan Lee.
  • Cold Turkeys Are Everywhere: Deliberately invoked by Devon once he learns of Jack's heart attack. Jack can't have alcohol, red meat, or engage in strenuous physical activity, so Devon conspires to put Jack in those situations whenever he can.
Devon: I'm going to make your heart explode.
  • Cure Your Gays: Devon tries to cure himself of his homosexuality in order to marry Kathy, Don Geiss' daughter. It doesn't quite work.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The portraits of Dr. Spaceman's former clients include Ashlee Simpson, Kenny Rogers, King Hollywood, ALF, Senator Orrin Hatch, and the Unabomber.
  • I Owe You My Life: Jack invokes this when Devon is choking on a hot dog with no one else around. He extracts demands from Devon before finally applying the Heimlich maneuver.
  • Imagine Spot: Tracy imagines Kenneth and Angie making love in ridiculous, over-the-top ways while Sade's "No Ordinary Love" plays in the background.
  • Ivy League for Everyone: Jack wears a Princeton t-shirt to Don Geiss' get-together.
  • Loose Lips: Kenneth accidentally lets slip to Devon that Jack had a heart attack.
  • No Such Thing as Bad Publicity: In-Universe. Jenna is humiliated by her weight at first, before her "Me Want Food!" catchphrase becomes popular and she starts getting attention.
Jenna: People recognize me, and I get off on it!
  • Pun: Dr. Spaceman's brochure on crystal meth is called "You Do The Meth!"
  • Soapbox Sadie: Liz often rails against the prejudice society has against fat people. No one else is particularly sympathetic to it (not even Jenna).
