Recap / 30 Rock S2 E3 "The Collection"

Go To

Jack hires a private investigator to vet him for the GE executive position. Meanwhile, Jenna fears that she's losing weight, and Liz works together with Angie to monitor Tracy at all times.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Bilingual Bonus: The Italian being sung in the background of Jenna's perfume commercial is various words for "fat".
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: When Jack assigns Kenneth to watch Jenna and keep her fat:
Kenneth: It'll be just like back home on the pig farm! I'll fatten you up, grow to love you, then my uncles will slit your throat!
  • The Cameo: Jackie Mason appears in a flashback, where Liz Lemon tries to make out with him.
  • Cat Fight: One nearly breaks out between Liz and Angie, which Tracy (very reluctantly) puts a stop to.
  • Centipede's Dilemma: This exchange:
Liz: Can you Walk and Talk?
Kenneth: Usually, but now you've got me thinkin' about it...
  • Collector of the Strange: It turns out that Jack has a massive collection of cookie jars. Len Wozniak suggests that he get rid of it, pointing out that Rudy Giuliani got rid of his (fictional, as far as we know) collection of wooden dolls before running for mayor. Jack eventually gives them all to Kenneth.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Every time Jack meets a new person, he prepares for how to fight them.
Jack: You have a gimpy left knee, right?
  • Everything Is Racist: Angie reacts this way when Liz so much as lays a finger on her.
Angie: Are you trying to control my body with your white hand?
  • Freudian Excuse: Both Jack and Kenneth have childhood hang-ups that resulted in their fascination with cookie jars.
  • Head-Tiltingly Kinky: Whatever it is Tracy and Angie do when they're about to make love shocks Liz.
Liz: You guys start with that?
  • Henpecked Husband: Tracy becomes this when he's being monitored by Angie.
    Tracy: (cheerfully) I'm whipped!
  • Innocent Inaccurate: When Kenneth explains the story of why he's so attached to cookie jars, we find out that is because it made an escape when he was younger from watching his mom cheat on his dad with one her friends (and pretty much created an escape from every problem he ever had.) but he hides it under the excuse of "Working on their paperwork"
  • Insult Backfire: Played with. Kenneth tries to make Jenna keep eating by insulting her repeatedly. She doesn't take them as compliments, but she does get turned on, and she starts making out with Kenneth.
  • Maturity Is Serious Business: In-Universe, Tracy has to step in and be the adult when Liz and Angie fight, which he's not at all happy about.
Tracy: You're making me act like an adult! An adult!
  • Phoney Call: Jack does this to Liz when she starts talking about her therapy sessions—while using his hand as the phone.
  • Private Detective: Len Wozniak. He's not particularly great or hardboiled, though.
  • Shout-Out: Jack mentions that his cousin Tim "fixes NBA games", a reference to NBA referee Tim Donaghy, who famously rigged games that he was betting on.
Dotcom: Open on a lone soldier walking through the desert. The year, 1861. The place? Mars.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: Both Pete and Jack suggest complimenting Angie's nails to soften her up.
