Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S1 E24 "The Shelf"

Go To

The twenty-fourth episode of The Looney Tunes Show.

Bugs needs a shelf for his Nobel Prize.

This episode features the "Chintzy" Merrie Melodies music video and the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote short, "Goner With the Wind".

This episode provides examples of:

  • All for Nothing: After levelling most of the house, and requiring Tina to fix it for him, Bugs finally gets to put the shelf up... only for it to immediately fall.
  • Comical Coffee Cup: One of the lyrics in the "Chintzy" Merrie Melodies music video is "A coffee mug that says MY BEST FRIEND will find a new home in my trash bin!", which Daffy sings as he proceeds to chuck said coffee mug into his trash can.
  • Continuity Nod: One of the disguises Bugs wears to the hardware store is the "ugly woman" he'd previously dressed as to try and convince Lola to break up with him.
  • Crappy Homemade Gift: In the "Chintzy" Merrie Melodies music video, Daffy is unimpressed with the childhood photo of him and Porky together that the latter gave to him for his birthday. He then explains to Porky in song that chintzy gifts are ones that are homemade like scarves and sweaters, and gifts that are not chintzy are expensive things like gold and gems. One of the lines in the song is "Try to stay away from arts and crafts".
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Daffy's reaction to the butter that Porky serves him being hard is to throw the butter at Porky. Then he pelts Porky with the bread that Porky served him because they're store-bought rolls. Tina, needless to say, is angered by seeing Daffy do that.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Due to his inexperience with hardware, Bugs frequently makes drastic mistakes, but also doesn't think to do small things that would minimize the damage. Most notably, after drilling into a water pipe, he never thinks to actually switch the water off, which results in the house being flooded.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After Speedy gets flooded out of Bugs' house, Lola asks him why he doesn't just live in his own house, saying that adults live on their own, and that he can afford his own house since he owns and operates his own restaurant. Speedy then asks Lola where she lives, and she tells him that she lives with her parents.
  • Paper-Thin Disguise: Bugs dons several of these as he visits the hardware store multiple times. Unlike most other times Bugs has worn disguises, the store employee at the checkout is clearly not fooled by any of them.
  • Running Gag: Bugs repeatedly goes in different disguises to the hardware store, buying supplies to fix his mistakes at the house. The man at the checkout, who is implied to be fully aware that these customers are all the same person, casually mentions something else Bugs should have done, which prompts Bugs to return home to find out that the problem has gotten even worse.
  • Sanity Slippage: "I GOT DA SHELF UP!"
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When Bugs accidentally drills into a water pipe, flooding the house and almost drowning Speedy in the process, it leads to this moment:
Speedy: [turning off the pipe] What's going on, man!? I was taking a nap. I almost drowned!
Bugs: I was trying put up a shelf and I drilled into a water pipe.
Speedy: Why didn't you just pay someone to put it up for you? I don't get it.
Bugs: I won the Nobel Prize. I think I can put up a shelf.
Speedy: Oh, the Nobel Prize, huh? What did you get it for, making bad decisions?
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: After all of his efforts to set up the shelf throughout the episode fail miserably, Bugs eventually settles on just wearing the Nobel Prize like a medal in the Warner Bros. Animation logo at the end, only for the ribbon to tear apart and cause the Nobel Prize to fall to the ground, much to Bugs' dismay.
