Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S1 E23 "The Float"

Go To

The twenty-third episode of the first season of The Looney Tunes Show.

After his parade float is destroyed in the car wash, Daffy decides to buy a yacht. The one problem is that he can't afford it, so he decides to trick Porky into giving him all of his money under the guise of needing a kidney transplant.

This episode features the "You Like/I Like" Merrie Melodies music video.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All Just a Dream: Subverted.
Daffy: (waking up in a bed) It was a dream. It was all a dream. That explains why I was such a horrible person and did those horrible things.
Bugs: Ehhhh, not a dream. You are a horrible person and you did do those horrible things.
  • Artistic License – Biology: A pig kidney probably would not be a good substitute for a duck kidney.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: While attempting to tie his yacht to the dock, Daffy gets distracted by a man selling hot dogs and forgets to finish the job. This results in him, Bugs, and Porky being stranded in the middle of the ocean.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Porky goes berserk upon finding out that Daffy tricked him. And it is hilarious to watch.
  • Bittersweet Ending: On the one hand, Porky gets all his money back from selling the yacht. On the other hand, he donates his kidney to Daffy, who forces him to finish his parade float without rest.
  • Cool Boat: A yacht, in this case.
  • Cover Innocent Eyes and Ears: As they watch Daffy trying to stop the car wash from ruining his parade float, yet failing miserably at it, a woman near the wash window puts her hand in front of her son's eyes.
  • Didn't Think This Through:
    • What starts the plot of this episode is Daffy taking his parade float to the car wash, failing to consider it would get ruined instead.
    • After buying the yacht with Porky's money, Daffy has several moments as described under Too Dumb to Live below.
  • Drives Like Crazy: Daffy ends up driving so recklessly with his parade float that Bugs would rather take his chances walking on the side of a freeway than ride with him.
Daffy: What are you, crazy!? You're on the side of a freeway. It's dangerous!
Bugs: Not as dangerous as riding in that thing.
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: After throwing Porky out to sea, forcing Bugs to jump off the boat to go to the former's rescue, Daffy has this to say:
Daffy: Well, I guess it's just me now — All alone on a yacht. Stranded in the middle of the ocean, with no life-jackets, and no idea how to sail... BUGS, PORKY — WAIT FOR ME!!!.
  • False Reassurance: Daffy easily convinces Porky to untie him by playing the "Best Friend" card, telling him "You won't regret this" before throwing him overboard.
  • Gilligan Cut: Bugs tells Daffy that nobody is going to give him $375,000. Then we immediately cut to Porky telling Daffy that of course he'll give him $375,000.
  • Ironic Echo: Daffy lies to Porky that he needs $375,000 for a kidney transplant. Later, after he nearly drowns, the doctor tells him he really needs a kidney transplant. Daffy even lampshades this upon learning it.
    Daffy: Huh, ironic.
  • Jerkass: Daffy is at his most unlikable here. Thankfully, he gets his comeuppance.
  • Jerkass to One: In the end, after Bugs pays for Daffy’s kidney transplant and Porky gives him one of his kidneys, Daffy acts very grateful to Bugs but continues to act like an Ungrateful Bastard to Porky.
  • Lack of Empathy: Daffy prioritizes his personal possessions over people. He refuses to sell his yacht to give Porky back his money, and when Bugs points out he'll lose a friend if he doesn't, Daffy says friends are easy to replace now that he has a yacht. When he finds himself in the hospital after almost drowning, his first concern is finding out the state of his yacht. Leading to this conversation:
Daffy: What about the Queen of the Ocean, did she survive!?
Bugs: Yeah, and was towed back to shore.
Daffy: [gasps happily] Thank goodness! It is things that matter. This proves it!
Bugs: We sold it and got Porky's money back.
Daffy: [cries out as he collapses on his hospital bed]
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Daffy gets the stuffing beaten out of him by an enraged Porky after Porky finds out that he tricked him. In the end, he winds up in the hospital, where he learns that A) his yacht has been sold and B) he actually does need a kidney transplant.
  • The Load: Daffy fits this trope to a T in this episode; after his parade float gets destroyed, he does nothing but cry about it for an entire year for the sole reason of convincing Bugs to make him a new float. When Bugs comes to visit him without the float Daffy thinks he deserves, Daffy gets the idea to buy a yacht and lies to Porky about needing a kidney transplant to get the money for it. He also uses the money to buy two jacuzzis and fancy bed sheets instead of more practical things for a boat like a sail, radio, or life jackets (and blames Porky for not having enough money for those things). He, Bugs, and Porky all end up stranded in the middle of the ocean because he neglected to tie the yacht to the dock; he refuses to let Bugs use his bedsheets for a sail despite it being their best way to get back to shore; and when Bugs does so, he has to stop Daffy from taking them down. Finally, he makes Porky build him a new parade float, refusing to let Porky take a much-needed break after Porky gave him his kidney.
  • Never My Fault:
    • At one point during the beatdown that Daffy receives from Porky, we get this:
Porky: HOW COULD YOU L-L-L-LIE TO ME?!
Daffy: I'm sorry. I thought that if I told you what the money was for, you wouldn't give it to me.
      Porky: I W-W-W-WOULDN'T HAVE!
Daffy: You just proved my point! How am I the bad guy here?!
    • When they discovered that they ended up floating away from the dock (because Daffy was too distracted by a hot dog cart to finish tying the yacht down), Bugs suggested that they put up the sails and sail back, only for Daffy to inform him that he didn't get any sails because he didn't have enough money for both the sails and a jacuzzi, and he decided to get the jacuzzi. Then Bugs suggests using the radio to call the Coast Guard, only for Daffy to tell him that he didn't have enough money to get a radio after buying a second jacuzzi. In between Bugs' suggestions, Daffy claims that they should blame Porky for not giving him more money. When Porky points out to Daffy that he gave him everything he had, Daffy claims that it's not his fault that Porky wasn't more financially successful.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Daffy eventually spills the beans to Bugs that he ripped off Porky to buy a yacht... with Porky within hearing distance. This leads to him getting his comeuppance.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Daffy receives one from Porky after Bugs tricks him into revealing to Porky that he conned him out of all his money.
  • Oh, Crap!: Daffy has this look on his face when Porky charges at him.
  • Only Sane Man: Bugs, who easily sees through Daffy's lies compared to Daffy for lying in the first place and Porky believing Daffy twice.
  • Pass the Popcorn: A variant; Bugs eats shrimp as he watches Porky beat Daffy up for lying to him about needing a kidney transplant and spending his money on a yacht.
  • Portmanteau: In the "You Like/I Like" Merrie Melodies music video, Mac's favorite color is Beige, while Tosh's favorite color is Grey. Tosh reveals that there's a color called "Greige" which is a lovely combination of Grey and Beige.
  • Skewed Priorities:
    • Daffy chooses to buy jacuzzis and bed sheets over a sail, radio, and life jackets with what money he had remaining. He outright refuses to let Bugs use his bed sheets for a sail (even though it's their best bet to get back to shore) and Bugs has to stop him from taking them down.
    • Earlier, when Porky is trashing the yacht and prepares to throw a lamp at Daffy:
Daffy: Wait! That's a Tiffany lamp!
Porky: TH-TH-THAT YOU BOUGHT WITH MY MONEY!!!
  • Taking Advantage of Generosity: Daffy not only lies to Porky about needing the money, but when the original amount isn’t enough, he has the audacity to shame Porky into giving him an heirloom watch, his debit card, and his clothes.
  • Time Skip: We see Daffy crying over the loss of his float for an entire year, though it's very likely exaggerated since Daffy would've had to leave his room within a few days for food.
  • Too Dumb to Live: After buying the yacht, Daffy gets plenty of these. To elaborate:
    • He forgets to tie the yacht to the dock, thus leaving him, Bugs, and Porky stranded out at sea.
    • He buys two jacuzzis and fancy bed sheets with Porky's remaining money instead of the more practical things for a boat like a sail, radio, or life jackets.
    • After tossing Porky out to sea, forcing Bugs to go to Porky's rescue, Daffy tries to swim after them while taking his bed sheets with him. This almost causes him to drown, which Bugs lampshades.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: Zigzagged with Daffy at the end. Daffy isn't at all grateful to Porky for giving him one of his kidneys. However, he does act very thankful to Bugs for paying for his kidney transplant.
  • With Friends Like These...: A pretty accurate description of how Daffy treats Porky in this episode. Fortunately, he gets his comeuppance. Porky himself says he needs to get a new best friend at the end of the episode when he builds Daffy's new parade float after giving Daffy his kidney.
