Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S 1 E 20 Working Duck

Go To

The twentieth episode of the first season of The Looney Tunes Show.

After getting fired from the bank for sleeping on the job as a security guard during a robbery, Bugs kicks Daffy out of his house until Daffy learns to pull his weight. Daffy gets a job as a muffin man at Enormocorp, whose CEO is Foghorn Leghorn. Foghorn takes a liking to Daffy and makes him his advisor, and eventually successor as CEO. Unfortunately, Daffy ends up making a bad business decision that bankrupts the company.

This episode features the "Pizzarriba" Merrie Melodies music video, and the Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote short, "Another Bat Idea".

"Working Duck" examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Daffy only knows Foghorn as "big, fat rooster" and nothing else.
  • Bait-and-Switch: In the prologue, Daffy is asleep on the job at the bank, but is awakened when thieves use explosives to blow up the entrance. He then says "Good heavens!... I almost forgot to turn on my sound machine!", does just that, and falls back asleep.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: In the "Pizzarriba" Merrie Melodies music video, Speedy (Short) has this dynamic with his cousin Gustavo (Thin) and a third unnamed mouse (Big).
  • Big "WHAT?!": Daffy in response to Bugs kicking him out of the house.
  • Brutal Honesty: Daffy's Copycat Mockery and You Are Fat comments actually endear him to Foghorn, who is sick of dealing with Yes-Man types.
  • Continuity Nod: When Bugs looks over Daffy's resume, Sheldon is Daffy's middle name.
  • Copycat Mockery: Seeing Foghorn address some executives, Daffy proceeds to imitate his voice and movements.
  • Cruel to Be Kind: Bugs tries to kick Daffy out of the house so that he'll finally buckle down and do more than goof off. Ultimately, he can't go through with it when Daffy begs to stay, but he still gets him a job and asserts he's absolutely doing it.
  • The Cuckoolander Was Right: Foghorn asserts to always trust the muffin man. He ends up being right when the real muffin man tells Daffy he would've delayed the merger.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Bugs. When Daffy brings in Pete Puma to help him decide whether to delay a merger or proceed as planned, Bugs says "Oh, right. This is the guy to ask." in a sarcastic tone.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: When Bugs explains to Daffy that the only reason he's been pulling his weight for the past three months is because he thought he was looking for a job, Daffy naturally asks why he would want to look for a job if Bugs pulls his weight. Bugs then asks Daffy if he's just enabling him not to look for a job, but Daffy points out that he's merely shielding him from the consequences of his own self-destructive behavior. By the end of the episode, Daffy makes a bad business decision that results in Enormocorp going out of business and hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs.
  • Epic Fail: Daffy is hired to be a muffin man in Enormocorp, the fifth largest conglomerate in the world. The CEO, Foghorn Leghorn, is so impressed with Daffy that he makes Daffy his successor. On his first day as CEO, Daffy makes one bad decision leading to the company going bankrupt, hundreds of thousands of people losing their jobs, and experts fearing the entire world economy could collapse.
  • Exit, Pursued by a Bear: The Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote short, "Another Bat Idea" ends with Wile E. being chased by a swarm of bats as a sound-alike of the Chase theme from The Benny Hill Show plays.
  • Expy: In the "Pizzarriba" Merrie Melodies music video, Speedy's cousin Gustavo seems to be one for Slowpoke Rodriguez, the slowest mouse in Mexico. This is particularly strange since the actual Slowpoke Rodriguez appears in a later episode, "The Black Widow" as the sheriff of Tacapulco, a small Mexican village.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After getting kicked out, Daffy is outrageously outraged and, while walking around, goes on at length about how he doesn't need Bugs or anyone else to help him. He ends up circling back to the house, knocks on the door, and (without missing a beat) begs Bugs for help.
  • I Always Wanted to Say That: This line from Daffy:
Daffy: Hold my calls, Carol. (walks into his office) "Hold my calls!" I've always wanted to say "Hold my calls!" And now someone's holding my calls! Who's calling me? I don't know! I don't care!
  • Literal-Minded: When Daffy decides to start lifting his weight, he lifts weights.
  • Loads and Loads of Loading: In the "Pizzarriba" Merrie Melodies music video, Speedy sings about how the titular restaurant has a website designed by his cousin Gustavo that allows the customers to order from their computer. Porky tries to log into it, but keeps running into loading screens that go on for at least a day. Speedy and Gustavo find out when they make their delivery at Porky's house.
Speedy: Wow! Is this thing still loading, Gustavo?
    Gustavo: Si, 88%.
Speedy: Oh, there it goes. We're almost up! Wait, did it freeze again? Gustavo, you've gotta be kidding me, man! You said you were good with computers!
Gustavo: No, I said I have a computer.
  • MegaCorp: This episode features Enormocorp, the fifth largest conglomerate in the world, run by Foghorn Leghorn, and eventually Daffy when Foghorn makes him his successor. Unfortunately, due to a bad business decision Daffy makes, Enormocorp goes out of business.
  • Mike Nelson, Destroyer of Worlds: Daffy's stupidity results in two events that plunges the entire world into an economic crisis. First, because he sleeps on the job as a bank security guard, $10M is stolen from the bank in one night. Second, after Foghorn promotes him to CEO of Enormocorp, Daffy decides with "help" from Pete Puma to proceed with the upcoming merger despite the economy recently changing, resulting in Enormocorp going out of business and over 100,000 people losing their jobs, which Elmer Fudd states has economic experts worried that the world economy is going to collapse.
  • Never My Fault: Daffy bemoans getting fired for sleeping on the job, ignoring that pesky detail of how the job was a bank guard and his sleeping allowed thieves to walk away with $10 million.
  • Oh, Crap!: Daffy has this kind of reaction when he finds out that Pete Puma, who helped him choose to proceed with the merger as planned rather than delay it, isn't the muffin man, but rather watching the muffin cart for the real muffin man, who says he would have delayed the merger. Bugs admits he would have done the same.
  • Promotion, Not Punishment: When Foghorn overhears Daffy making fun of him, he calls Daffy into his office, making it appear as if he's going to fire him, but he compliments the muffins that Daffy brings him and decides to make him his advisor, and eventually take his place as the CEO.
  • Shout-Out: The Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote short, "Another Bat Idea" is one giant one to Batman, particularly the 1966 live-action series starring Adam West; Wile E. dresses up in a Batman suit complete with explosive Batarangs, Bat Grappling Hook, and cape that flies. When Wile E. gets hit by a boulder, it breaks apart to reveal a rock formation shaped like West's Batman as a sound-alike of the 1966 series theme song plays.
  • Spoof Aesop: This episode ends with Daffy having learned a lesson after causing Enormocorp to go bankrupt; when he pulls his own weight, he pulls a lot of stuff down with him.
  • Surveillance Station Slacker: While working as a bank guard, Daffy fell asleep in front of the monitors. Thieves end up stealing $10 million, leading to Daffy being fired.
  • Talkative Loon: Daffy. After delivering a particularly outlandish monologue, Daffy had to ask Bugs what the heck he was talking about. Bugs tells Daffy "I don't know. I stopped listening after 'Robots eat breakfast burritos'."
  • Tyop on the Cover: In-Universe; In the "Pizzarriba" Merrie Melodies music video, after waiting an entire day, Porky finally manages to log into the titular restaurant's website, only for Speedy to find out that Gustavo wrote "Pibbarriza" on the home page.
    Speedy: You spelled it wrong!
    Gustavo: Pibbarriza!
Speedy: What is pibba? It's Pizzarriba!
Gustavo: Not according to your website.
  • You Are Fat: Daffy constantly makes jokes about Foghorn's waistline, including that he needs to lay off the muffins, and that he should go with his gut, since he has a big enough one. Foghorn isn't offended because he's consistently amused by Daffy's Brutal Honesty, much to the surprise of anyone else in the room.

Robots Eat Breakfast Burritos

After getting fired from being a bank security guard for sleeping on the job, Daffy goes on a rant about how he's not a mindless robot, but tries to prove his point by asking what kind of a robot eats breakfast burritos. It gets to the point where he forgets what he was trying to say, with Bugs admitting that he stopped listening after the breakfast burrito analogy.

How well does it match the trope?
