Recap / The Looney Tunes Show S1 E1 "Best Friends"

Go To

The first episode of The Looney Tunes Show.

One day, Daffy Duck signs him and Bugs Bunny up to be contestants on Besties, a game show about best friends and how much they know each other. While Bugs naturally knows everything there needs to know about Daffy, it turns out Daffy doesn't know anything about Bugs.

This episode features the "Grilled Cheese" Merrie Melodies music video.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Comically Missing the Point: Daffy believes that Bugs is the Man of Steel.
Daffy: You're from the planet Krypton?
Bugs, baffled: No, you maroon! That's the story of Superman!
    Daffy: Who's Superman?
Bugs: I can't believe I hitched my wagon to you.
    Daffy: You have a wagon?
  • The Conscience: Speedy convinces Daffy to try and be more considerate to Bugs.
  • Determinator: Daffy in the following act, where he tries to become a good friend to make it up to Bugs. This goes downhill afterwards...
  • Disappointed in You: Both Bugs and Speedy express disappointment in Daffy when he didn't help Bugs during the game show.
  • Epic Fail: My Lord.
    • In the opening scene, Bugs and Daffy watch a game show. The questions involve the first president of the United States (George Washington), the capital of Alaska (Juneau), the amount of sides on a triangle (3), and an ingredient in spaghetti and meatballs (spaghetti and meatballs). Daffy's answers, respectively? Oprah, New York, 8, then 4, then 8, and oranges.
    • Later, when Daffy is practicing for "Besties", he passes on every question and needs to be guided by Bugs to guess the latter's birthday.
    • The actual show gets off to a bad start when the beginner question of "How long have you known each other?" is responded to with an overlapping 17 years from Bugs and 5 years from Daffy.
    • The first actual question is "What's your roommate's favourite vegetable?" While Bugs is holding a carrot, Daffy answers beets.
    • He then costs them more points by claiming his middle name is Armando, instead of Sheldon, which it actually is.
    • Now for the kicker. The final question for all the marbles, "What is your best friend's catchphrase?" Bugs leads him towards the right answer of "What's up, Doc?", only for Daffy to blow it by yelling "I don't do Mondays!"
    • Finally, at the very end of the episode, Daffy reveals he paid for the cruise with Bugs' credit card, proclaiming that he does know something about his best friend: his credit card number, which he proceeds to blurt out to the people on the dock.
  • I Am Not Weasel: Daffy calls Speedy Gonzales a rat.
Speedy: I am not a rat! I am a mouse!
  • Insult Backfire: After Daffy was unable to guess Bugs' birthday, let alone anything else about him.
Bugs: You don't know anything about me! I bet if you look "self-absorbed" up in the dictionary, you'd find your picture.
Daffy: My picture's in the dictionary? Is it a good one? What am I wearing? Does my beak look big?
  • I Resemble That Remark!: See the trope above.
  • Mythology Gag: Bugs and Daffy's birthdays are the same dates as their debut appearances.
  • Not Listening to Me, Are You?: After getting Daffy to agree to focus on someone besides himself so they can win, Bugs begins telling the story of his birth in New York. Midway through, he switches to recounting Superman's origin story, which gets Daffy's attention.
  • Pie in the Face: This happens to both Bugs and Daffy on Besties when the latter incorrectly guesses that beets are the former's favorite vegetable.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Happens between Bugs and Daffy after the latter fails them in winning the game show.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech:
    • Bugs gives out why he's disappointed in Daffy after losing the game, especially when he couldn't even guess his catchphrase right.
Daffy: "What's up, Doc?" Terrible. Just the world's worst catchphrase. And I don't even remember you even saying it. Say it.
      Bugs: What's up, Doc?
Daffy: Nope. Doesn't ring a bell. (they arrived home) But it sure cost us the game.
Bugs: What cost us the game was going on a game show about "best friends" when it's obvious that we're not. (he gets out of the car)
Daffy: You're saying I'm not your best friend? Why?! Because I don't know anything about you? Because I never ask any questions or show any interest in you? Because I take you for granted? Because if it is, that's awfully petty of you.
Bugs: (he hangs his head down before turning back to him angrily) My best friend would probably know... that I like carrots! He would most likely know my birthday and he would definitely know my last name! And for the record... I would have loved to have won a cruise. And that is what's up, Doc! (he goes inside and slams the door)
Daffy: That still doesn't sound right.
    • The next morning, Speedy gives one to Daffy himself the next morning, saying that Daffy is nothing without Bugs.
Speedy: Why should he help you? You didn't help him on the game show last night. You know you think you show Señor Bunny a little more respect considering he lets you live here.
Speedy: FYI, when you crash somewhere for five years, you live there, all right? You're not a best friend. You're a terrible friend.
Daffy: Why am I a terrible friend?
Speedy: Let me answer that question with a question. How many friends do you have besides Señor Bunny?
Daffy: Well huh, let see, you.
      Speedy: I'm not your friend.
Daffy: Okay then uh, there's that guy that comes over once a week and we hang out by the pool. I think his name is Fong or Trang.
Speedy: Are you talking about the guy who comes to clean the pool? Daniel? You're kidding yourself, man. Señor Bunny is your only friend. You're not careful, soon you'll have no friends.
      Daffy: Who needs friends?
Speedy: I'll tell you who. Someone with no girlfriend, no job, no credit, no hobbies, no social skills.
Daffy: Wait, I think I know someone like that. Daniel?
Speedy: No, idiot. You! You're nothing without Señor Bunny.
    • At the end, Bugs gives a speech mentioning several of Daffy's negatives before ending on a positive note.
Bugs: Daffy, I know I said you weren't my best friend, but after these past few days, seeing all the effort you've put in, seeing how hard you've tried, I have to say: You gotta stop trying.
      Daffy: What?
Bugs: It's not your thing. Would it be nice if you remembered the occasional birthday, or food I'm highly allergic to? Sure. But not if it means we turn into those guys. (to Mac & Tosh) No offense.
      Mac & Tosh: None taken.
Bugs: Daffy, you're a mean-spirited, self-absorbed, disturbed little weirdo. But for whatever reason, you're my best friend.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Show Within a Show: The show Bugs and Daffy go on is called Besties.
  • Trademark Favorite Food:
    • Carrots for Bugs. When Daffy is asked this question on Besties, he incorrectly guesses beets.
    • Pureed butternut squash in a balsamic reduction with just a hint of clover for Mac Gopher, which Tosh correctly guesses when asked this question on Besties.
    • In the "Grilled Cheese" Merrie Melodies music video, Elmer Fudd sings a romantic song about eating grilled cheese sandwiches.
