"Released in 2021, The Punishment Due is a five map episode using the tried and true Quake themes, and features a new original soundtrack by Juzley & Alekswithak. Built on top of the Copper gameplay adjustment addon, The Punishment Due sticks to creating a modern episode that is still reminiscent of the original game. The first level, Azure Annoyance, starts off with traditional gothic brick work, but opens up into a sprawling cave system, the mixture between brick and rock creating a new style. The action escalates to the fourth map, With Fiends Like These, a sprawling castle with over 300 enemies. Save early, and save often! Authors Juzley and Fairweather show that the Quake community is still growing after 25 years, not having started making levels for the original Quake until 2019. The Punishment Due is definitely a prime example of the quality style, and refined gameplay of the modern Quake mapping community."
Addons mod description in the 2021 remastered edition of Quake

The Punishment Due is a five-level Quake episode mod that was initially released on March 15, 2021, by Julian "Juzley" and Lain "Fairweather".

Built using the Copper mod, the episode takes inspiration from Underdark Overbright with sprawling maps that hold to Quake's original design principles, and features an original soundtrack by Juzley and Alekswithak.

On May 31, 2022, the mod was added as a downloadable addon for the 2021 Quake Remaster, with an interview of its creators following suit.

The addon is comprised of the levels "Start for Start's Sake", "Azure Annoyance", "Let Them Eat Quake", "Tour de Vores", "With Fiends Like These", and "Ogre and Out".

The addon and its 2021 Remastered edition version show examples of the following tropes:

  • Anti-Frustration Features: If you reach the third floor in "Azure Annoyance", the one that contains the ledge with the two Ogres, and you fall back to the first floor, a portal will open, easing you the task of having to go back upwards. If you instead fall to the second floor, you'll have nearby a platform.
  • Blackground: The only visible things in "Start For Start's Sake" are the difficulty portals. Otherwise, there's nothing but a black void.
  • Harder Than Hard: The Nightmare difficulty portal is unlocked after shooting a hidden switch at the right of the Hard difficulty portal. Then a message is triggered, and the portal spawns a fair distance opposite the main portals.
  • Monster Closet:
    • In "Azure Annoyance", reaching the first floor and crossing the bridge will reveal two hidden Grunts behind a wall.
    • Also from "Azure Annoyance", once you get to the room with a Quad Damage behind some bars, lowering the pillar will reveal some hidden metal steps... and two Scrags hiding in a small upper chamber.
  • Notice This: After passing the first wall in "Azure Annoyance", you'll reach a ledge with a platform button sticking out of it. It reveals a secret in the nearby computers, though you'll need to reach the secret quickly.
  • Teleporting Keycard Squad: After picking up the Silver Runekey in "Let Them Eat Quake", a bunch of monsters spawn near the cylinder hall, and the walls of the hall itself are raised, preventing you from using them as cover.
