Season 10, Episode 12

Shiva

Team Gibbs launches an investigation into the murder of Eli David and Jackie Vance. Ziva travels to Israel to make arrangements for her father, while Director Vance, his family, and the rest of Gibbs' team does the same for Jackie in the US.

  • Artistic License – Religion: At the end of the episode, Ziva, who is unmarried, is shown praying at the Kotel with her hair covered with a scarf. While married Jewish women cover their hair at the Kotel, unmarried women do not.
  • Call-Back:
    • To "You Better Watch Out", two episodes prior. The assassin who killed Eli David and Jackie Vance was already dying of cancer. Gibbs tells the team to look for the family member he was leaving his money to, which will allow them to trace who hired him.
    • Ziva's lifelong friend Shmeil Pinkus reappears from "Gone".
  • Crusading Widow: Vance is bent on revenge. He tells Gibbs he now understands why Gibbs took matters into his own hands following the death of his wife and daughter; Vance now feels the same way.
  • Dirty Coward: Ducky, in tones of iron, describes "suicide by cyanide" as the favored means of "escape" for cowards like Hermann Goring, Heinrich Himmler, and Joseph Goebbels, and thus a "fitting" end for Roland Ames.
  • Give Me a Sign: Ziva asks for one as a sign she should not give up hope. Her sign arrives moments later in the form of Tony, offering support for whatever she needs.
  • He Had a Name:
Kasmi: Vance's woman is dead as well?
Gibbs: Her name was Jackie! She was a mother of two.
  • Meaningful Funeral: For Jackie. Ziva returns to Israel to make arrangements for her father's, but the actual funeral is not shown.
  • No Sympathy: Ducky does not moderate his description of Ames as a Dirty Coward even after revealing to Gibbs that he had terminal cancer and less than six months to live:
    Gibbs: Made killing himself easier?
Ducky: Pity does not validate cowardice.
  • Nothing Personal: Gustafson's feelings toward Israel in general and Eli David in particular.
  • Oblivious to Love: Tony is determined to not let McGee be this re the Israeli woman who flirts with him.
"So help me, McBlivious, if you don't pounce on that hot Israeli action, I will never forgive you."
  • Rule #1: Gibbs' Rule #8: Never take anything for granted.
  • Special Agent Obvious: McGee when Bodnar shows up and asks where Ziva is.
    McGee: Well, she's not here.
Bodnar: Yes, I have been blessed with the gift of sight.
  • The Starscream: Ilan Bodnar, Eli David's Number Two, was the one who arranged his death.
  • Stoic Woobie: Ziva, who shows little emotion over the death of her father.
    • Not So Stoic: While staying with Tony, he overhears her having a nightmare. She goes back to being Stoic Woobie, however, when he offers comfort.
  • Stuff Blowing Up: Kasmi's car at the end.
  • Tracking Device: Gibbs put one on Kasmi.
  • You Are Not Alone: Tony tells this to Ziva (in Hebrew) as she leaves for Israel.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: The look on Tony's face when the very attractive Israeli woman on the MTAC screen snubs him in favor of flirting with "Timmy".
  • You Killed My Father: Ziva vows revenge on whoever was behind the murder of her father.
  • Your Mom: A variation when Bodnar shows up and meets Ducky:
Bodnar: And whose grandfather would you be?
Ducky: That depends. Who's your grandmother?
