Recap / Jessica Jones (2015) S2E12 "AKA Pray for My Patsy"

Go To

Alisa is hellbent on killing Trish. Meanwhile, Jeri plans her revenge against Inez and Shane.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's not clear whether Inez really means that she was sorry for what they did to Hogarth or not. It's also not clear how much (if any) of what Jeri tells Inez about Shane is true or just pure manipulation, though given that what Jeri claimed to be a folder full of Shane's love letters is actually just her list of pawn brokers, she's probably being pretty economical with the truth.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Jessica mentions to Trish how she was always jealous of her that her mom was still around. Now it's obviously different.
  • Becoming the Mask: Inez claims that she developed real feelings for Jeri and felt sorry when Shane went on with their plan.
  • Bullying a Dragon: Inez and Shane could've picked a better target than Jeryn "Monster Shark Lawyer Bitch" Hogarth for a con job.
  • Continuity Cameo: Turk Barrett provides Jeri with a firearm. Surprisingly, the infamous Butt-Monkey who's been humiliated by Matt, Luke, and Frank in the past gets off easy. And he's driving a really nice car to boot. Apparently, he does all right when he's not getting hassled by the Defenders.
  • Cop Killer: After Alisa kills Sunday, the police gets a shoot-to-kill order.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Maury, after Trish is nearly killed by Alisa.
I told her to stick with her lifestyle format.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: While Inez and Shane were surely lowlifes, Hogarth manipulating Inez into shooting Shane was a wee bit much.
  • Heel–Face Door-Slam: For a second it looks like Jess and Dorothy might finally start to get along. Then Alisa goes after Trish and it's back to square one.
  • I Can't Believe a Guy Like You Would Notice Me: Inez gives this as an explanation why she slept with Hogarth despite claiming to be in love with Shane and even though it wasn't strictly necessary to make the con work. Having someone as accomplished and charismatic as Hogarth interested in her was just too intoxicating to resist.
  • Interrupted Cooldown Hug: Just when Jessica is beginning to get through to her mother, Costa and Sunday interrupt them, which causes Sunday's death in the end.
  • It's All About Me: When Trish hears about Karl's death, all she is concerned for is having lost her chance at gaining powers,
  • It's Personal: Hogarth makes it clear that everything Inez and Shane stole from her is replaceable. She wants revenge for being screwed with.
Pawn shop owner: What's your deal? You obviously have money to burn and this is all just... stuff.
Jeri: True. They didn't steal anything that I can't replace. Except for my time and I don't know how much more of that I have left.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: For the very first time ever, Dorothy shows signs of kindness towards Jessica, instead of blaming her for what happened to Trish...only to do it later after Sunday's death and the attack on Trish, which she herself caused by announcing Trish's location to the media.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Alisa's killing Detective Sunday — for reasons that at best were an attempt at Taking You with Me that failed to kill Alisa herself, and at worst were Alisa effectively using Sunday as a human mattress to cushion her landing — is viewed as this in-universe, with the NYPD rank and file deciding that she needs to be shot on sight as soon as they find her, and even Jessica reluctantly concluding that she has to take her mother out before she can do any more damage.
  • Never My Fault: Unsurprisingly, Dorothy refuses to take responsibility for publicly announcing Trish's location and blames Jessica instead.
  • Noodle Incident: Hogarth has some history with Turk Barrett, so she reaches out to him to buy a gun. It's implied she got him off the charges when he was arrested for his part in Wilson Fisk's criminal empire.
  • Taking You with Me: Alisa kills Sunday this way.
  • Ungrateful Bitch: Trish doesn't thank Jessica for saving her, instead calling her a coward and berating her for not killing her mother, claiming that she is the one who would deserve powers.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Jessica claps back at Trish hard after the Ungrateful Bitch bit above. Then Alisa calls and Jess calls Trish the most important person in her life, her best friend, her sister. All of this seems to hit home.
  • Woman Scorned: Inez becomes so pissed when Hogarth tells her that Shane has been manipulating both her and many other women that she shoots him.
