Recap / Jessica Jones (2015) S2E11 "AKA Three Lives and Counting"

Go To

Jessica begins seeing hallucinations of Kilgrave as she comes to grips with her murder of Dale. Trish reveals her true intentions, and Malcolm realizes his mistakes.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Artistic License – Biology: There's almost no way Jessica's attempt to stage Dale's suicide by throwing him off the roof of his house would fool any even remotely competent forensic scientist. Unless he landed on the ground in exactly the right way (the chances of which are extremely minimal), it would be obvious that his skull fracture was caused by a comparatively small object, not an impact with the ground. Then again, it's implied that the cops are burying the matter because Dale was an asshole whose death they don't care to investigate, and especially since doing so keeps his murders of prisoners under wraps.
  • Asshole Victim: None of Holiday's coworkers even try pretending to be sad when they learn of his death. It's also implied that the police aren't treating his investigation too seriously either.
  • Big "NO!": Alisa has several after she hears of Karl's death over the news.
  • Cardboard Prison: Alisa loses her shit on learning of Karl's death via the news, and straight up walks out of prison.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • In the flashback of Alisa and Karl at the beach, Alisa can be seen wearing a heart-rate monitor which looks identical to the one Bruce Banner wore in The Incredible Hulk (2008).
    • The scene of Trish drawing a gun on Malcolm to threaten him as she kidnaps Dr. Malus very much echoes when she drew Simpson's revolver on him in season 1 while discovering Ruben's corpse in Jessica's bed.
  • Driven to Suicide: Karl, after realizing how much he screwed up, blows himself and his research sky-high.
  • Fan Disservice: Also serves as Fanservice when Jessica strips down to her bra and panties to make sure she isn't wearing anything that has Dale's blood on it.
  • The Farmer and the Viper: All the niceness Marilyn had shown towards Alisa ended up getting her thrown against a wall by the latter.
  • Get Out!: Jessica yells this when the hallucination of Kilgrave begins singing "I Want Your Cray Cray" in a hilariously over the top way.
  • Hated by All: Dale evidently didn't treat his co-workers much nicer than he treated the inmates, since none of the other prison guards even pretend to feel sad over his death.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: Jessica is in no position to lecture Malcolm on using sex to hide from his problems, something that she admitted herself earlier in the season. Doesn't mean she's wrong, though.
  • It Gets Easier: Averted for Jessica, who feels even more horrified after her accidental killing of Dale. This is why she refrains from murdering Karl in the end, despite the hallucination of Kilgrave's continued temptations.
  • Jumping Off the Slippery Slope: Trish is so desperate in her attempt at gaining powers that she is willing to shoot at Malcolm when he tries to stop her.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Dale Holiday brutally murdered his prisoners and made all their deaths look like suicide. His fate is exactly the same as his victims after Jessica killed him out of self defense.
  • Make It Look Like an Accident: Jessica makes her accidental killing of Dale look like a suicide.
  • My God, What Have I Done?:
    • Jessica is horrified at what she did to Dale.
    • Malcolm realizes how he unwillingly helped Trish achieve her selfish plan.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Since he's just a hallucination, Kilgrave tends to pop up in different places whenever the camera looks away from him.
  • Properly Paranoid: Alisa was right in predicting that Trish had something to do with Karl's disappearance.
  • Redeeming Replacement: Marilyn, the female prison guard who gets assigned to watch over Alisa after Dale's death.
  • The Reveal: Trish wanted to get a hold of Karl so he can give her superpowers.
  • Sanity Slippage: Jessica starts seeing hallucinations of Kilgrave. It gets so bad over the course of the episode that she starts seeing him everywhere, assaulting a random civilian whom she mistakes for him.
  • Talking the Monster to Death: Jessica barely manages not to kill Malus; the things she says while not killing him give him a Heel Realization and he kills himself.
  • Troll: Hallucination Kilgrave spends much of his time annoying Jessica, even singing Trish's old song twice.
  • Trouble Entendre: Apparently, Alisa understood right away what Jessica did to Dale when they talked over the phone over a supposed date.
  • We Used to Be Friends: After everything said and done, it is clear at the end of the episode that Malcolm and Jessica are no longer friends.
  • Wham Shot: Jessica sees a hallucination of Kilgrave.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • Malcolm is naturally pissed about being used by Trish.
    • Jessica on the other hand is mainly angry at Malcolm for going behind her back.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: The whole point of the Kilgrave hallucination. Jessica is so full of self-hatred that she imagines that the person she hates most in the world would now approve of her.
