Recap / Jessica Jones (2015) S2E13 "AKA Playland"

Go To

Alisa forces Jessica to go on the run with her.

  • The Alibi: Trish kills Alisa, spattering Jessica with blood. Jessica leaps out of the ferris wheel and confronts Trish in a rage, taking the gun from her and telling her to run. She stops the ferris wheel, and curls up next to her mother. When the cops show up, they find her completely lost in shock and grief, incapable of communicating, with the gun on the seat next to her. Detective Costa assumes she killed her mother herself in self-defense, meaning she's out of trouble with the law.
  • Better Manhandle the Murder Weapon: Subverted. Jessica snatches Trish's gun away after she shoots Alisa dead, and is found with it by Detective Costa when the cops arrive. However, Costa assumes that she shot Alisa dead in self-defense, meaning that Jessica escapes the usual consequences of this trope.
  • Bittersweet Ending: With heavy emphasis on the bitter part. By the end of the season, aside from Oscar and Vido, Jessica has basically lost and/or cut ties with all of her loved ones, with her mother getting killed, disowning Trish and Malcolm no longer working for her. On the other hand, she's in a normal, non toxic relationship with Oscar and Vido, and it's possible she will no longer run from who and what she is.
  • Blackmail: With video material from Malcolm that implicates them in money laundering, Jeri is able to force Chao and Benowitz to buy her out for a significantly larger sum, as well as to take all of her clients, who were bringing more than 60% of income. Including Danny Rand.
  • Bookends: One of Jessica's last lines is that she hates starting at the beginning. "AKA Start at the Beginning" is the title of the first episode of this season.
  • Boom, Headshot!: Trish kills Alisa with a precise shot to the head.
  • Despair Event Horizon: After it becomes clear that she and Jessica have no real chance of escaping the law, Alisa stops the effort and instead tries to have one last nice moment with her daughter on the ferris wheel.
  • Diner Brawl: When Jessica meets Oscar in a diner, she soon realizes the place is swarming with undercover cops and has to get through them in order to escape.
  • Downer Ending: It's either this or a Bittersweet Ending weighted toward "bitter". Jessica has lost a great deal in a short amount of time, but the final shot of her sitting at a dinner table with Oscar and Vido telling the story of how she stopped a convenience store robbery on her way home from a case hints at some hope that Jessica can move on and "learn how to live" as she says in the voice over.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change: Malcolm trims off his dreads when he goes freelance.
  • Good Feels Good: After saving the family, Alisa becomes very excited of the thought of becoming a hero.
  • I Have No Son!: Sibling variant; Jessica disowns Trish as her sister after Trish killed her mother.
  • I Take Offense to That Last One: Alisa is used to being berated for her murderous instincts and rampages, but is disturbed by Jessica comparing her to Kilgrave.
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Trish manages a headshot from the ground with a handgun on a person sitting in a moving ferris wheel carriage.note
  • Jerkass Has a Point: When Jessica initially turns down Alisa's proposal of running off together, saying that she has a life, Alisa retorts that Jessica is mostly drunk.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • A doctor tells Trish that she's used up two of her nine lives. In the comics, Trish Walker's superhero identity is Hellcat. By the end of the episode, Trish seems to have developed cat-like reflexes and precision.
    • Jessica makes clear she does not want to hear "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility".
  • No Hero Discount: Stopping a robbery doesn't grant Jessica a free bottle.
  • Not So Above It All: Alisa cheers like an excited little kid when Jessica agrees to come with her.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Two mothers to their daughters.
    • Jess is trying to convince Alisa to go to the Raft, refusing to go on the run with her because she has a home and a life. Alisa brutally rips it apart calling her a worthless loser in every way.
    • Dorothy tries to keep Trish in her hospital bed, forcing her to look at all of her recent screw-ups, and bluntly telling her that she is many things, but not a hero. "What exactly is a failed radio personality gonna do that trained law enforcement professionals and a superpowered woman can't?"
  • Retirony: In the end, it is implied that Alisa wants to abandon the idea of running away with her daughter and possibly even turn herself in or maybe even commit Suicide by Cop so that Jessica can go back to her normal life. Trish kills her before any of this can happen.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Malcolm has been shown as very attractive all season, but after his haircut he puts on a nice suit and grabs a briefcase. He stops looking boyish and looks damn professional.
  • Small Name, Big Ego: Alisa thinks that she and Jessica are the two most powerful women in the world. Clearly she knows nothing about those guys who "saved" the city all those years back.note
  • Super-Reflexes: Trish apparently has gained these, as she discovers when she easily catches her phone with her foot.
  • Surprisingly Sudden Death: Alisa gets shot mid-conversation with Jessica.
  • Undercover Cop Reveal: Jessica notices other patrons in the diner have earpieces and realizes they are undercover cops who are waiting for her.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: The shop owner whom Jessica just saved from getting robbed doesn't even give her free booze in return.
  • What You Are in the Dark: As Jessica noted, saving the people who were going to die in the exploding cars would give the police a lead. Nonetheless, she and Alisa save all four and tell them to call 911.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: Alisa tries to convince Jessica that, despite all her hardship, she is a hero at heart. At the end of the episode, Jessica seems to take the advice at heart.
  • You Killed My Mother: Jessica can't see Trish as her sister anymore after she shoots Alisa.
  • You're Insane!: Jessica calls Alisa insane. The latter responds that Jessica is her cure.
