Recap / Its Always Sunny In Philadelphia S 06 E 12 Dee Gives Birth

Go To

"Why don't you guys do what you do best and don't care, okay? I got it from here."
Dee

Dee goes into labor and Dennis is forced to stay at the hospital with her while Mac, Charlie, and Frank try to find out who the father of her child is by throwing a party and inviting all of her old flings.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Absurdly Spacious Sewer: Discussed at the beginning of the episode when Frank and Charlie reveal that they've been running around naked in the sewers looking for rings and coins, grossing out Mac and Dennis.
  • Ambiguously Gay: Mac describes Rex as a "quality lay", earning an odd look from Charlie.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: When Mac and Charlie are discussing how to raise a child:
Mac: You gotta set rules, you gotta set boundaries.
Charlie: Set some ground rules. Uh, you know, like... don't have them doing cocaine. Get them off the internet.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Dennis is genuinely concerned for Dee during her ordeal, chastising her for not taking better care of herself and even wanting to be in the room with her as she's giving birth. Also, the rest of the gang actually seem glad to have her back at the end of the episode, wheeling her out of the hopsital to take her back to the bar. Mac even laughs at one of her jokes.
  • Badass Boast: Dennis gives one to the nurse that even he seems impressed with.
Dennis: If you do not get my sister her stories and a new room as soon as possible, then I will come down on this hospital like the hammer of Thor! THE THUNDER OF MY VENGEANCE WILL ECHO THROUGH THESE CORRIDORS LIKE THE GUST OF A THOUSAND WINDS!!
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Charlie thinks that conception happens when "the sperm eats the egg and grows strong into a baby". He also cannot wrap his head around how the whole surrogacy thing works.
  • Continuity Cavalcade: In order to try and find out who the father of Dee's baby is, the gang round up almost all of the men she's had sex with (and a few she hasn't) over the course of the series, including Rickety Cricket, Bill Ponderosa, Ben the soldier, Rex the male model, Lil' Kev, and the busboy from the Korean restaurant.
  • Continuity Nod: Dee first toyed with the idea of being a surrogate back in the season five premiere.
  • Double Standard Rape: Female on Male: Mac and Charlie discover that Dee bullies and emotionally manipulates men into sleeping with her — which by all accounts qualifies as rape, but they don't seem to consider it as such.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: Since this is Carmen's last appearance, she remains one of the few recurring Sunny characters whose life not only hasn't been totally destroyed by the gang, but has even been improved by it.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Mac and Charlie find Bill Ponderosa to be "super shady", especially after he admits that he lies to women about having a vasectomy so they don't make him wear a condom during sex.
  • Extreme Doormat: Charlie and Mac tell Ben he has to stand up for himself when he mentions that Dee will berate him viciously over the phone, but "she's just drunk, so it's okay."
  • Got Volunteered:
    • Dennis finds himself stuck at the hopsital looking after Dee because the other three make it out the door before he does.
    • The Gang only takes interest in the father of the baby because they assume Dee will volunteer them to help raise it.
  • Incest Subtext: Dennis comes around to the idea of being "the father" and at one point excitedly exclaims "we're having a baby!"
  • It's All About Me: The rest of the gang are mostly concerned about how Dee having a baby will affect their lives. When they find out she was a surrogate, they chastise her for wasting their time.
Charlie: If we knew you were doing the stupid surrogacy thing again we would have just completely ignored your pregnancy!
Dee: You did ignore my pregnancy!
  • Large Ham: Dennis as he demands a new room for Dee
Dennis: If you do not get my sister her stories and a new room as soon as possible, then I will come down on this hospital like the hammer of Thor. The thunder of my vengeance will echo through these corridors like the gust of a thousand winds!
  • Men Don't Cry: Mac and Charlie are somewhat weirded out by Ben crying on them as recalls how Dee bullied him into sex.
Mac: There's a room full of dudes out there, so you might wanna... stop crying before you come back out to the party.
Charlie: Yeah, pull it together, 'cause, you know... you're a soldier, and you should be tougher.
  • Metaphorgotten: Frank claims that they have to "cast a wide net to catch the fish that Dee banged".
  • Not Quite Dead: Dennis and Dee assume that the old man who appears in Dee's hospital room is dead and attempt to remove him, only for him to reveal that he's alive just as they run into a nurse.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Dee doesn't take anything seriously until she's actually giving birth. Her panic also changes Dennis, as he instantly holds her hand, demands the nurses help her, and reassures that he won't leave her.
  • Panicky Expectant Father: Dennis mostly plays this role in lieu of an actual father.
  • Percussive Maintenance: Dee tries to get the TV in her hospital room to work by hitting it repeatedly and, when that doesn't work, throwing the remote at it.
  • Pet the Dog: Though she was undoubtedly motivated by the financial compensation, Dee being the surrogate for Carmen and her husband is still a pretty nice gesture on her part — especially since they'd been having trouble finding one, likely because of Carmen's status as a transgender woman. Also, the rest of the gang being nice to Dee for a change at the end of the episode.
    • Dennis, in particular, goes above and beyond in helping Dee while she's in the hospital. He gives a lot of lip during, but he comes through as a supportive brother for her when it counts. He also opines that Carmen and her husband will probably be fantastic parents.
"Help my sister! Help my sister!"
  • Please, Don't Leave Me: Dee says this to Dennis when she's about to give birth.
  • Product Placement: Dee leaves the hospital to get Subway while in labor and can be seeing carrying a large cup and sandwich from Subway.
  • Put on a Bus: This episode marks Carmen's last appearance in the series.
  • Really Gets Around: Mac and Charlie are impressed by the amount of action Dee gets when they round up the potential fathers.
Mac: She is slammin' ass all over town! She's getting way more action than us.
  • The Reveal: Dee was actually the surrogate for Carmen.
  • Sassy Black Woman: The duty nurse who Dennis tangles with in the hospital.
  • Security Cling: Dee clings to Dennis when the labour pains start being serious.
  • She's Back: Said by Dennis after Dee gives birth and almost immediately starts quipping about Frank and Charlie messing around in the sewers.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Dennis and Dee attempt a Weekend at Bernie's operation to move the "dead guy" in Dee's room.
    • Mac states that he and Charlie had initially wanted to do a My Two Dads thing with the baby, but he guesses they could do Three Men and a Baby instead when Dennis wants in.
  • Status Quo Is God: Dee reveals she was actually a surrogate just as the guys come around to the idea of having a baby around. Lampshaded:
Mac: You know, a baby would've screwed up our chemistry, right?
Frank: Yeah, we got a good thing going. Why blow it with a baby?
  • Suddenly Shouting: Dennis during his "hammer of Thor" speech.
  • Who's Your Daddy?: Subverted. No one the Gang suspects is actually the father of Dee's baby because she's a surrogate for Carmen.
