Go To

"Attention, ladies, gentlemen, hotties and beefcakes. You were brought here because you are the most beautiful people in all of Philadelphia, and as such, the honor has been bestowed upon all of you to compete in Paddy's first Next Top Billboard Model Contest."
Mac

Mac and Frank hold a contest to find a model for a new Paddy's Pub billboard, but Dennis insists on taking part in order to launch his career as a male model. Meanwhile, Charlie and Dee set out to film a viral video using Dee's "crazy characters" to promote the bar.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • Affectionate Parody: Of reality shows such as America's Next Top Model and The Bachelor.
  • Alliterative Name: Martina Martinez, Taiwan Tammy
  • Ambiguously Gay: Mac blatantly checks out Rex the male model when he takes his shirt off and positively gushes over his physique.
  • Asian Buck Teeth: Dee plays "Taiwan Tammy" with fake buck teeth.
  • Asian Speekee Engrish: "Taiwan Tammy", one of Dee's characters, speaks like this. Lampshaded by Charlie, who calls it "incredibly racist".
  • Banned Episode: It's one of five episodes of It's Always Sunny which is no longer available for online purchase or streaming due to its depiction of Blackface/Brownface/Yellowface.note
  • Brownface: Dee browns up to play Martina Martinez, her "sassy Puerto Rican" character. But just her face, her arms and neck are unaltered.
  • Call-Back: Green Man returns.
  • Camp Straight: Dennis's modelling ambitions bring his campier tendencies to the fore.
  • Casting Couch: Mac does this shamelessly, holding his own Bachelor-style competition with the female models and ultimately hiring the two that had sex with him because "this whole thing's about banging".
  • The Determinator: Rex is willing to do things like stand in shit and eat live cockroaches in order to win the modelling competition, despite the fact that he won't even get paid to be on the billboard.
Dennis: Rex, are you kidding me? Seriously, you're just gonna step right in it?
    Rex: I wanna win, bro.
  • Extreme Omnisexual: Frank is now turned on by jaguars, but he's no longer turned on by mules.
  • Finishing Each Other's Sentences: Parodied with Mac and Rochelle.
Mac: I feel like we're completing each other's...
    Rochelle: Sentences!
Mac: Yeah, I was gonna say sentences! Oh my God, how did you read my...?
    Rochelle: Mind?
Mac: I was gonna say head.
  • Flat "What": One of the men "Martina" starts to interview has this reaction to her.
  • Girl on Girl Is Hot: Mac seems to think so despite his usual stance on homosexuality.
Mac: Dominique, you banged me. Like right away, I hardly had to do anything. Tabitha, you did the same. But most importantly, you banged each other. And you let me watch. Awesome.
  • Groin Attack: Charlie kicks Dennis in the crotch while wearing the Green Man suit.
  • Hypocritical Humor:
Dennis: I don't need validation anymore, how great is that? But what I do need is, I need the company credit card so that I can buy myself a billboard, get myself out there and show the entire world that Dennis Reynolds still has a rockin' body that deserves to be worshipped.
  • Inferiority Superiority Complex: Dennis is so insulted by Mac and Frank implying that he's not hot enough to be on a billboard that he spends the rest of the episode going to extreme lengths just to prove them wrong.
    • In much the same vein, Dennis becomes absolutely enraged when Frank insults his "anteater nose" and (as seen below) coldly tears into Frank's own shortcomings.
  • No Such Thing as Bad Publicity: Dee is mortified when she finds out that Charlie uploaded her embarrassing video diaries onto YouTube... until she finds out it's had 80,000 hits.
  • Only in It for the Money: Several of the models leave the competition after it's revealed that they won't be getting paid.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: Dee's characters are essentially horrific ethnic stereotypes she plays for comedy.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Dennis delivers a vicious one to Frank.
Dennis: My nose was chiseled by the gods themselves, Frank. My body was sculpted to the proportions of Michelangelo's David. You, on the other hand, well... you're a pit of despair. Frank, you disgust me. You disgust everyone. And you will never, ever be on that billboard.
  • STD Immunity: Averted; Dee states in one of her video diary entries that she "has a rash in a place where a sexually active person should have a rash."
  • Schadenfreude: Lampshaded by Charlie, who points out that most people want to watch videos about other people getting hurt in some way.
  • Sex Sells: Stated word for word by Mac, and the reason that the guys want to put attractive models on the billboard.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Frank reveals at the end of the episode that he's actually already had the billboard made, rendering the competition entirely pointless.
    • The billboard itself is rather pointless because while it shows Frank flanked on both sides by massive female cleavage with his thumbs up, it’s literally not advertising anything. He just put it up as a big "fuck you" to Dennis and everyone else.
  • Shout-Out:
    • In order to outline how superior he is to Frank, Dennis compares his own body to the muscular David, which is about three times larger than a normal person.
    • Dee's series of video diaries as "PatheticGirl43" is clearly parodying "lonelygirl15".
  • Teeny Weenie: "Martina" accuses the white guys she interviews of this.
  • Viral Marketing: In-Universe, Dee and Charlie attempt to create a viral video to promote Paddy's.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Charlie hits Dee in the face with a volleyball several times.
  • You Look Familiar / Earlybird Cameo: Kristen DeLuca, who later plays Frank's busty model Brenda in Paddy's Pub: Home of the Original Kitten Mittens, can be seen in the crowd of billboard applicants.
