Recap / Handy Manny S 3 E 26

Go To

Doggie Door

Manny gets a call from Mrs. Portillo to fix some scratches Carlos made in her walls and doors. When he gets there, he discovers that Mrs. Portillo has hurt her ankle, and needs to stay off her feet for a few days- so he installs a doggie door so she doesn’t have to keep getting up on crutches to let her pet out of and into the house.

”Doggie Door” provides instances of:

  • Alliterative Title: Doggie Door.
  • Blatant Lies: Mr. Lopart at one point tries to claim that some absolutely-identical photos of Fluffy (he was taking pictures of her for the Spiffy Cats Calendar Contest, apparently) show her expressing wildly different emotions.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Mr. Lopart’s camera tripod makes a return.
    • Maurice briefly appears, in his tank on Mrs. Portillo’s table.
  • "Everybody Laughs" Ending: At the end of the episode, the tools are arguing about what color dog bowl they should get for Fixit, and Manny jokingly asks Fixit what color she’d like.
    Fixit: (Barks)
Pat: Ooh! I think she said green!
  • Injured Limb Episode: Mrs. Portillo has apparently hurt her ankle, and needs to stay off her feet for a few days- which conflicts her need to keep letting Carlos in and out of the house.
  • Show Within a Show: Apparently, Mrs. Portillo likes watching some telenovelas, although the audience doesn’t actually find out anything about said shows.
  • Stock Animal Diet: Briefly alluded to.
Mr. Lopart (to Fluffy): Give me a big smile, like you just ate a whole bowl of tuna.

Rocking Chair

Mr. Alvarez calls Manny to reattach a leg that had snapped off a chair; Manny ends up converting said chair into a rocking chair so that Mrs. Alvarez can more easily rock Isabella to sleep.

Tropes in “Rocking Chair” include:

  • Continuity Nod:
    • Turner having stayed up all night reading a how-to book is a subtle one, as all the way back in “Page Turner”, he was shown to enjoy reading a book called “How To Fix Broken Stuff”.
    • Isabella’s room returns, just the way Manny set it up.
    • Mr. Lopart’s record player also makes a return.
  • Fun with Homophones: When Mr. Lopart says he’s trying to teach Fluffy to salsa:
Pat: Ooh, I love salsa! Especially with tortilla chips.
  • Literal-Minded:
Pat: I don’t think it’s a good idea to put runners on a rocking chair. You want the chair to rock, not run.
  • On Three: At the beginning of the episode, when the tools are trying to move a sleeping Turner without waking him, Felipe tells the tools to each lift a corner of his blueprint-hammock on the count of three… and then he counts to tres, confusing Pat and causing him to not lift his end of the hammock.
  • Public Domain Soundtrack: Mrs. Alvarez sings “Rock-A-Bye Baby” as a lullaby for Isabella.
  • Running Gag: Turner keeps falling asleep throughout the episode, and saying goofy things about a “fuzzy bear” in his sleep.
  • Sleep Deprivation: Turner constantly falls asleep throughout the episode due to having stayed up late the previous night reading a book.
  • Snap Back: Despite Mrs. Alvarez having had a third baby well on the way in “Home Sweet Home”, in this episode the Alvarez family is back to just being the parents, Susanna, and Isabella. (Which raises some Fridge Horror if you think about it…)
  • Talking in Your Sleep: Turner does this twice:
(When Manny tells Turner to wake up)
Turner: Just a minute, fuzzy bear.
    (Later…)
Turner: Yeah, yeah, funny, funny little fuzzy bear.
