Basic Trope: Fictional phone numbers have "555" at the beginning.

  • Straight: Alice's number is 555-4673.
  • Exaggerated:
  • Downplayed: 555 is only one of the phone number exchanges used in the show's universe.
  • Justified: This only occurs in one particular town, and only happens to make it easier to remember phone numbers.
  • Inverted: Everyone's phone number ends with 555 in the show's universe.
  • Subverted:
    • Alice's number is 552-4673.
    • A character is given a 555 number, but it turns out that it's a fake number.
  • Double Subverted:
    • But, as it later turns out, Alice made a mistake when writing her number down.
    • The real number also begins with 555.
  • Parodied:
    • Alice's number is 555-555-5555. And her extension is 555.
    • Telephone keypads only have the number 5 on them.
  • Zig Zagged: Some of the numbers in the show start with 555, while others don't.
  • Averted:
    • Nobody's phone number starts with 555 in the show.
    • Telephones don't exist in the show.
  • Enforced: The creators of the show don't wish to be held responsible for any prank calls resulting from the phone numbers given in the show.
  • Lampshaded: "Mommy, why do phone numbers always start with 555?"
  • Invoked: "We don't want to accidentally have someone's number on the show!"
  • Exploited: "If this was a bad movie, everyone would have a 555 number... Oh, Wait!, everyone I know has one!"
  • Defied: The producers buy phone numbers for the purpose of safely using them on the show.
  • Discussed: "Do all the phone numbers in Canada start with 555, too?"
  • Conversed: "Why do fictional phone numbers always start with 555?"
  • Implied: When Bob calls Alice, his finger bounces in one spot and the phone only plays one note.
  • Deconstructed:
    • Alice tries to use a 555 number when making a Show Within a Show. Because 555 numbers are no longer reserved for fictional use, however, she soon gets a very angry call from the person who the number actually belongs to.
    • Alice's phone number is 555-555-5555. She gets a lot of random calls from people who were just bored enough to dial a number that's all fives since her phone number is that simple.
  • Reconstructed:
    • Alice instead uses one of the 555 numbers reserved for fictional use.note
    • Alice gets her number changed to another number that begins with 555, but the other numbers are random, preventing random calls.
