Make no mistake, despite the light-hearted/goofy nature of the game, there are plenty of moments that you'd swear were out of a deep sea horror film.

  • When Dave recovers a Sea People artifact for the first time, the first thing that happens is a massively gargantuan squid suddenly appears in the background and proceeds to just stare at Dave for what feels like an eternity before it swims off. The sheer size of the tentacles alone would be enough to swat or even crush a man like Dave like a grape.
    • The best part? You later have to fight it to progress the story.
  • The Gadon, mutant Sea People created by a Mad Scientist among their number that wanted to use the Sea People's sacred tree for more creative use in ancient times. Their skin is pale and rock-like, their eyes glow, they are Immune to Bullets and will attack Dave on sight should he get spotted by one. If they do manage to get him, there's no escape or Smashing Survival — it's an instant Game Over.
    • Chapter 4 introduces them to Dave, initially kept behind bars to prevent their escape while Dave has a safe passage to obtaining the Glacier Key. As soon as he does so, an earthquake collapses the bars, leaving the Gadon to swim free and Dave now has to evade and hide from them.
    • One part of Chapter 5 has a Gadon that patrols an area with a switch, and Dave has to get into very close proximity each time he has to trigger the switch. Even with a Divine Tree Fruit right next to the switch to stun the Gadon, it's still a harrowing experience, especially since it can still recover and attack during the mini-cutscene of the puzzle wheels turning when the switch is pressed.
    • Chapter 5 has a giant one that is comparable in size to the earlier giant squid, and Dave has to make a frantic escape from it through darkened tunnels to avoid getting killed. It's also very unsettling to look at, with much of its body covered in barnacles along with one eye socket being completely filled with them.
  • During one of the nights, a drunk Dr. Bacon decides to enter Sea People ruins to find artifacts. The first room looks pretty normal, showing ancient murals of the Sea People gifting Divine Tree Fruit to the humans. The sealed room after that however contains several skeletal remains of Sea People and torture devices used to kill Sea People, where the murals show that the humans died after consuming the fruit and hunted down the Sea People as revenge on the assumption that the Sea People tried to poison them.
Dr. Bacon: This place... Look at all these bones and torture devices...
  • The sheer lengths John Watson goes to to hunt down and murder Dave, purely because he thinks he's overfishing the Blue Hole. By the third and final battle with him, he comes off as less of an environmentalist and more like a psychotic Stalker without a Crush. Worse still, it's revealed that his organization Sea Blue is actually a front for an illegal dolphin poaching operation that also exploits the Blue Hole's wildlife, and that John's motive of trying to kill Dave is to get rid of perceived competition.
  • The DLC Collaboration with DREDGE has an eerie red fog descend upon the Blue Hole, which causes abberated fish to appear and turns the already deadly night-time expeditions into an underwater Zombie Apocalypse as well as shady hooded figures showing up at Bancho Sushi, who are thankfully only there to eat the abberated fish dishes since they're so freaky that the usual clientele refuse to eat any of it.
