King looking similar to a Cubone. One piece of concept art even depicted him with similar colors to Cubone, strengthening this connection.
OwlphibiaExplanation The Owl House and Amphibia are generally considered by their fans to be "sister shows". Both shows were greenlit and announced simultaneously, both center on a female protagonist transported to another dimension, both were created by alumni of Gravity Falls, and both contain an abundance of easter eggs referencing each other. This has resulted in a large overlap between the two shows' fandoms, hence the term "Owlphibia".
King being the Heel–Face Reincarnation of Bill Cipher, thanks mostly to Alex Hirsch voicing both characters with pretty much the exact same voice. It helps that Bill was an actual leader of demons, there would be at most two years between Bill's demise and King's birthnote Bill died in 2012, and with the 2022 calendar in "Reaching Out", King would have hatched in 2013 or 2014, and Gravity Falls ended with Bill calling out to a higher being in Sdrawkcab Speech as he died for the chance at a reincarnation.
"If Amity saw that-" "I SAW THAT!"note Willow expressing concern about Amity discovering that Luz isn't an abomination and being instantly proven right when the angry witch appears. It's especially common to see memetic versions of this scene on YouTube. One blogger described Amity as hopping on the table like "a demented, teal Peter Parker."
"I've been sucked into your awful fandom!"note King's line in "Lost in Language" when he reveals that he's now a fan of the Good Witch Azura books.
"There is no heterosexual explanation for this." "There really isn't."note When the trailer for the second half of season one dropped, someone tweeted a screenshot of Amity putting her hands on Luz's shoulders while at a dance with the former sentence, and Dana Terrace, herself, retweeted it with the latter. Since then, both sentences have been used for any scene with even a hint of Les Yay to it.
Willow’s behavior as Amity burns her memories is often likened to Drunk Adora.
Thanks to this video, note Now private "Little Miss Perfect" by Taylor Louderman has more or less become symbolic of both Lumity and the show as a whole. And the same goes with the song's sequel, "Ordinary".
Once Alex Hirsch did a recording of Hooty singing the same song, a fewanimatics were made.
The dance scene with Luz and Amity became synced to different tracks. On a similar note, fans have started to redraw the popular dance scene with Catra and Adora from She-Ra and the Princesses of Power but with Luz and Amity instead.
"Wing it Like Witches" has now been dubbed "Amity's Gay Panic" note While this term used on the internet has come to mean someone freaking out around their gay crush, the original context of the term is a legal defense for assaulting someone, due to possible same-sex advances. Most people refer to the colloquial type of gay panic in regards to Amity's reaction, but discretion is advised. episode.
Fans immediately thought of the "Play Dumb/Not that Dumb!" line from Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse when Amity babbles "Who's Amity?"
"Oh, wow. Sports."Explanation One notable line from Amity, said when Luz picks her up to get her some help for her injured leg. Sometimes added with "😳" flushed face emoji.
SHE WAS A CHILD!/SHE WAS ASLEEP!Explanation (SPOILERS) Lilith furiously asking why it was so easy to curse Eda before it cuts right to Lilith standing over a young sleeping Eda, and the fans furiously responded to such a low move.
Give Luz a Gun note Similarly to the "Why Harry Potter should have carried a 1911" copypasta, fans joked that in "Young Blood, Old Souls", Luz would find or steal a gun, storm the Emperor's castle, kill Emperor Belos and/or Lilith and save Eda.
It has become common to refer to Amity as a Luzbian, or Luz as a Blightsexual.
Team Magma Amity Explanation The comparisons between Luz's pirate outfit in "Separate Tides" and the Team Aqua grunt uniform quickly led to corresponding art of Amity dressed as a Team Magma grunt.
"Shut up."note During "Agony of a Witch", Amity is revealed to have missed out on the school field trip to the Emperor's castle due to her leg injury from the prior episode, and reacts to an Emperor's Coven poster with Lilith on it in an irritated fashion as a result. Fans take this as both foreshadowing for the end of the episode where Lilith blurts out that she was the one who cursed Eda, and their general feelings towards Lilith.
Belos is Sans Undertale confirmed. Explanation (SPOILERS) After the premiere of "Young Blood, Old Souls", comparisons and jokes were made due to the scene where Belos' mask is broken, revealing a menacing glowing blue eye, along with his mask's somewhat skeletal appearance. This meme garnered a resurgence after the airing of "Watching and Dreaming", wherein Belos' possession of the Titan's corpse is signified by a single blue light glowing in one of its eye sockets.
Gus is also Sans Undertale confirmed. Explanation In "Labyrinth Runners" Gus spends a portion of the episode with his left eye glowing blue. Similar to the above, this was pretty much instantly compared to Sans.
The Titan is Sans. Explanation To round out the trilogy, given the Titan's dad bod, clothing style, missing eye and skeletal appearance, many fans came to the obvious conclusion.
Thanks to fan theories about what the Day of Unity could be, people have jokingly compared Emperor Belos to Star Butterfly and even some have depicted him as a fan of hers for what Star did in "Cleaved". As well as Shao Kahn due to his very similar goals. The Cold Open of "Hunting Palismen" suggests the fans may be on the right mark, until later episodes revealed Belos was lying to get every witch together to wipe them out.
Hooty's tea party.Explanation In "Agony Of A Witch", Hooty had a tea party with the unconscious bodies of the Emperor's Coven scouts he had beaten up earlier in the episode, with one clearly desperate to get away. Since the episode helped give rise to Hooty's Memetic Psychopath status, fans have joked that most of the Coven scouts were actually dead (with Hooty's awareness of this being open to interpretation) and the survivors being traumatized by the experience. The meme gained a new life in "O Titan, Where Art Thou", where a Scout mentions that he still hasn't gotten over the tea party.
Tibbles = Bacon.Explanation Tibbles, who's among the most hated characters in fandom alongside Odalia, is joked by some fans as being turned into bacon by various ways and wheter anyone would eat him for dinner, mostly some of the characters would.
Luz has been compared to the protagonist of Diamond Jack who both bear striking similarities.
Season 2, Episode 7.note With the show's second season approaching, a supposed leak revealed that its seventh episode would feature Luz and Amity becoming an Official Couple, resulting in a ton of Lumity fanart getting that label. Turns out it actually happens in Episode 8, so the leak was off by one.
Alador Blight, or at least his younger self as depicted in the flashback in "Young Blood, Old Souls", is jokingly being referred to as a werewolf due to his unkempt brown hair.
Luz Lanenote Upon the announcement of My Adventures with Superman, a lot of people have noticed that Luz and the show's take on Lois Lane look surprisingly similar. Some have even joked that Luz is playing Lois following the cancelation of TOH. People have also noticed that Jimmy Olsen looks like grown-up Gus.
Lesbian posesnote Amity's open-armed pose and smug expression from the new opening credits gave birth to tons of fanart. Also, her pose is very similar to Catra's from the Netflix She-Ra opening. Since both characters are lesbians, fans quickly adopted it as an unofficial pose for any and all lesbian characters.
Luz gets a lot of attention from her quirky stand◊ in "Eda's Requiem".
Another example is from "Eclipse Lake", when Amity poses with her right hip out◊ as she tries to restrain Hunter with abomination goo.
Amity's hairnote In the season 2 promo, fans saw Amity with her hair down for the first time and it led to several memes and pictures of her tying her hair in slow motion, while others made drawings with Luz blushing at Amity with her hair down. Following that episode, after Amity dyed her hair purple, more fans began to draw her hair purple, too.
"Special delivery: PAIN!"note Hooty's Pre-Asskicking One-Liner in "Echoes of the Past", usually used by fans when something traumatic or sad happens in an episode.
Gus being overshadowed by Lumitynote In every episode that stars Gus as the main character, there are some who points out that no matter how hard he tries, Lumity will overshadow him as evident with "Through the Looking Glass Ruins" where the fans focused on Lumity instead of Gus, who is the main character of said episode.
"You little RAT!"note Given the timing of this episode and the news that Season 3 will not be extended despite fan requests, this led fans to picture the Echo Mouse who ate Wittebane's diary as Mickey Mouse, the icon of Disney, eating whatever plans they had for a full third season.
Connecticut Luz.note After "Hunting Palismen" revealed that Luz is from Connecticut, jokes began popping up with her taking the role of Connecticut Clark from Flork of Cows, sometimes furthering the joke with Amity as Malfina the Demon Witch, and general jabs at Connecticut.
Connecticut Caleb.note After learning that Caleb Wittebane fell in love and ran away with a witch, the same jokes started to be made about him as well.
Luz slapping Hunternote Perhaps the most infamous scene of "Hunting Palismen" where Luz leans in closely to Hunter's face while unconscious, only to slap him awake. Fans view this as a Take That! and/or subversion to the classic "Dude, She's Like in a Coma" trope that most Disney fantasies are known for, as well as a reminder that Luz at that point, hates the Golden Guard, and is crushing on someone else.
It's probably just going to be filler.note Most fans assumed that "Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Hooty's Door" would have nothing except meaningless fun after the last, more emotionally heavy episode. Not only was the episode not filler, but it became one of the biggest Wham Episodes of the entire series. As such, the meme is about how the claims that "Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Hooty's Door" would be filler are Hilarious in Hindsight.
Tomato Amitynote Amity's face has a tendency to turn completely red when frustrated or in the presence of Luz, which has caused some fans to compare her to a tomato.
Eda the Harpy Ladynote In “Knock, Knock, Knockin’ on Hooty’s Door”, after Eda makes peace with the Owl Beast during a dream sequence, she soon turns into a half-woman, half-bird harpy version of herself. This lead to some fans making comparisons between her new form and the Harpie Lady (Eda called her new form "Harpy woman") monster from the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise
Luzity?!note After Disney uploaded a compilation of Luz and Amity's relationship, the fans are enraged and confused on why they named it as Luzity not Lumity, as several fans joked that Dana fixed the ship name after the uproar. Disney themselves would poke fun at this in their description for Chibi Tiny Tales: Lumity Date.
The Lumity House.note Due to a number of fans watching The Owl Housesolely for Lumity, fans unofficially refer to the show as The Lumity House instead.
Luz's Little Mouse Song With A Twist note While sick with the common Mold, Luz sings a song to the Echo Mouse, before booping its nose, prompting it to show her the next part of Philip Wittebane's journal. It has become common for fans to edit the scene to have the Echo Mouse react differently, often in reference to other works of fiction.
I remember seeing this in theaters. note Commented by Eda upon realizing a movie she saw was 30 years old, this is used for similar revelations of media people saw/watched being from antiquity now.
WE GET IT! note Following Amity's constant declaration of being an "Awesome Girlfriend" to Luz many fans and detractors would draw several characters (mostly Willow) being annoyed by her being stubborn about it. Eda herself does have a very similar reaction in response to Amity inserting herself into the Eclipse Lake expedition purely on the grounds of being Luz's girlfriend.
The real Creepy Luz note A kind of two-fold meme, when after a long, long time of speculating what evil nefarious deeds Luz's doppelganger, AKA Creepy Luz, could be up to, "Yesterday's Lie" smacked fans to the wayside by revealing Creepy Luz wasn't creepy at all, but a Cute Monster Girl looking for a safe place to call home. At the same time though real Luz, after finding out that the Void Between the Worlds had the ability to spy on anyone in the human and demon realms, instantly thought about spying on Amity, which is borderline stalker behaviour (though she quickly caught herself before she could see anything), so fans were quick to announce that Creepy Luz had in fact been the real Luz all along.
Apologies for calling her "Creepy" Luz/ Vee we're so sorrynote The revelation of "Creepy Luz" is actually a Woobie shapeshifter who just wanted a place to belong instead of the malicious imposter the fandom thought the character would be like ended up causing most of the fandom to immediately apologize for unintentionally demonizing Vee.
I will never understand anime. note This is said by Camila when Luz explains the argument between herself and Vee in Luz's room away as just Luz seeing a spoiler for an anime episode. Fans of the show were quick to run with it, either as Biting-the-Hand Humor or as a genuine Take That! to anime.
La Chancla note Camila beating up Jacob Hopkins with a slipper has quickly become a beloved moment from "Yesterday's Lie" both for it being a subtle, true-to-life bit of Latin representation and for being a Moment of Awesome that cemented Camila as a Mama Bear. After "King's Tide", it became common for fans to draw Camilla doing the same to the Collector.
Luz and her siblings note Fans have noticed that between her Like Brother and Sister-style relationship with King, her sibling-esque bickering with Hunter during their team up in "Hunting Palismen" and later her declaring him her family in "Thanks to Them", and how quick she is to get over the fact that Vee had essentially stolen her life in the Human Realm (as well as the fact that the end of "Yesterday's Lie" has Camila essentially adopt her), Luz has collected quite a few surrogate siblings.
"That's me. I would do that." note Zeno said Hunter would be wrapped up in a blanket watching Steven Universe while saying that. Inspiring a bunch of fanarts.
"Luz and Amity are Just Friends!"note Because Disney is notorious for their behavior towards the LGBT+ community, many fans have joked about Disney trying to frame Luz and Amity's budding romance as a very close friendship. This has continued well past the point where Luz and Amity have asked each other out and have openly referred to each other as girlfriends.
Give them their own show. note Due to the short amount of episodes in season 3 due to Disney and how some characters from The Owl House have yet to have their own stories, some fans wished for a spin-off where everyone can get their time in the spotlight.
The Disney "brand"Explanation After much speculation about the reason behind The Owl House's third season being cut short (consisting of three hour-long specials), Dana Terrace revealed on Reddit that one of the executives at Disney had decided that the show didn't fit Disney's brand and cancelled it without her input. The fanbase immediately reacted with a mix of pure rage at Disney's expense, and an overwhelming amount of jokes about how Disney has some very strange thoughts on what defines their "brand". The Owl House had to go, but stuffed animal heads bleeding and chanting satanically and another serialized show that had a teen getting stabbed in the back, and acquiring the rights to several adultanimatedseries and allowing them to keep their content were apparently totally fine. While some of the development executives explained at a panel what they meant by "brand" (The show was developed as a Disney Channel show, which primarily focused on episodic comedies for 6-11 year olds. It was serialized, the target audience was older than what the channel was meant for, and it was renewed for a second season prior to the series premiere before the older-oriented Disney+ launched), it still left a sour taste in the fanbase.
Luz in HellExplanation A fandom meme stemming mostly from thiscomic by artist MoringMark, in which Belos reveals that Luz is Dead All Along, that he is the devil and that she is actually suffering in hell. While this is not the first time this concept has been brought up in the fandom, as that was in fact the shows original concept in very early stages, it got an immediate following, with the subreddit being flooded with memes about the comic
Willow does not exist.Explanation Season 2A has had virtually zero Willow content, or at least her presence was decreased in favor of Amity, which the fans have noticed. The joke is that Willow is something of a mass hallucination and is not actually a character in the show.
"Let's dress up and travel together!" Explanation Whether it was because of active censorship or a "Blind Idiot" Translation, the Taiwan sub of KKKOHD changed all mention of Luz and Amity dating as "best friends" and "dressing up and traveling". Fans either had a field day with this or were enraged by it, and both sets of fans have taken to social media mocking the sub's translation, with some fanart showing Luz and Amity wearing different outfits while preparing to go on a vacation. Heck this comic by artist MoringMark, takes the dub joke up to eleven. It has gotten to the point even the She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and The Legend of Korra fandoms, which also have LGBT representation, have acknowledged it as well.
Everyone's shipped with Hunter. Explanation Many memes (such as this one◊) have been made about Hunter's status as a Launcher of a Thousand Ships, with fans sometimes getting into debates over who they ship him with. Made funnier when it appears like the writers are deliberately invoking Ship Sinking with several of the characters.
Jock Luz. Explanation The full promo for Season 2B included a shot of Luz wearing Eda's old Grudgby letterman jacket with a messier, more boyish hairstyle. This instantly inspired a slew of fanart.
Belos face reveal. Explanation Follies at the Coven Day Parade ended with Belos taking off his mask on a public broadcast, leading to people comparing him to a Youtuber doing a face reveal video.
Belos apology video. Explanation (SPOILERS) Belos' attempts to convince Luz to spare him at the end of Watching and Dreaming have also been compared to Youtubers doing "apology videos" for things they've done wrong, and the meme pokes fun at those who don't actually apologize and just try to justify their actions like Belos does.
Sweet Potato Explanation As of Season 2B, Amity has picked up Spanish, and the first thing she does with her multilingual ability is to call Luz a sweet potato. "Sweet Potato Luz" has become a meme in tune with Tomato Amity as a result. Hilarious in Hindsight considering Katya makes romantic fanfic of sentient food.
Batata Explanation Spanish for Sweet Potato, used interchangeably with its English translation.
The British (SPOILERS)Explanation There are many, many jokes that make fun of the British through Philip Wittebane, a British colonist from the 1600s that ended up on the Boiling Isles. The meme also extends to Belos, who was theorized (and eventually confirmed) to be Philip having survived in the present, and blames every single one of his negative traits on him being British.
Belos recognizing Luz and Lilith (SPOILERS)Explanation Luz and Lilith met Belos hundreds of years ago during the Deadwardian Era, and the fandom has caught onto the idea that Belos remembers them, both ironically and seriously. As of "Hollow Mind," this all turned out to be true as Belos knew who Luz was the entire time, and it also seemingly confirmed the theory he was only keeping her around so she could deliver him the light glyph and help him meet the Collector.
Lilith caused the whole series Explanation A specific variation of the above in which Phillip only went on to become EmperorBelosbecause Lilith punched him in the nose. In canon, Belos wasn't motivated by Lilith punching him in the face and was instead a Witch Hunter from the start.
Hunter is actually a Clawthorne. Explanation Due to Hunter having several similar traits to the Clawthorne family (his hair color is close to Eda's, he has a bird Palisman and when infiltrating Hexside in "Any Sport In A Storm", he is wearing a potion track outfit), fans have began joking that he's actually a long lost member of the Clawthorne family. That and the fact that Dell's Palismen looks just like Flapjack.
Hunter is actually a Clawthorne (SPOILERS) Explanation Because Hunter was cloned from Caleb Wittebane, who is heavily implied to have had a child with a Clawthorne, this meme has developed into a legitimate theory. It is popular to depict Hunter reacting to records of Caleb— whether kept by Belos as a momento, or in Gravesfield.
Homophobic BoschaExplanation In "Any Sport in a Storm", Luz and Boscha's snarking is interrupted by Amity showing up, and Amity and Luz proceed to have a conversation while Boscha is completely ignored, much to her annoyance. Fans jokingly took Boscha's annoyance as a sign that she was being homophobic towards Lumity, declaring her the only homophobic gay person on the Boiling Isles. The meme returned after "Them's the Breaks, Kids", which feature two Recurring Extras that resemble Boscha and were quickly interpreted as her mothers, leading to jokes that Boscha was homophobic specifically because her moms were embarassing or wouldn't let her do whatever she wanted as a kid
Hollow MindExplanation Zeno Robinson telling fans they weren't mentally prepared for Hollow Mind, several crew members naming the episode as their favorite, plus promotional materials being released early -including a small clip of the episode- caused panic within the fandom that the episode would be incredibly dark and gut-wrenching. Many fans even preemptively made memes illustrating future mental breakdowns over Hollow Mind. They weren't exactly off-base
Philip said fuck Witches (SPOILERS)Explanation With the reveal of Belos/Philip's status as a witch hunter many have jokingly summarized his motivations as this. Additionally, as some of the memories in the background in "Hollow Mind" imply Philip's brother may have married and had a child with a witch, others have joked he did this in response to said phrase and misunderstood what Philip was telling him to do.
Collector Luz (SPOILERS)Explanation An already existing Epileptic Tree that gained a lot of traction after Hollow Mind. During the March charity stream, Dana Terrace drew the upper half of the face of a new character that would show up in season 2b. Given the character's Cosmic Motifs, it was assumed to be the Collector, but many fans also took note of the character being very similar to Luz wearing her cape, albeit with messier hair and a different color scheme. Then "Elsewhere and Elsewhen" featured a shot of Luz poking her head out of a time pool with half her face lit by a campfire, making her look even more like the character Dana drew. Finally, "Hollow Mind" revealed that the Collector lacks a physical form, causing the theory that Luz will be possessed by the Collector to explode in popularity, reaching memetic levels the day after the episode was released. It only got more popular with "Clouds on the Horizon", where the Collector talks about "new games" he wants to play and ends with Luz being taken to Belos. Ultimately, though, "King's Tide" showed that the Collector had a physical form all along, albeit one that resembles Luz, and was only inhibited by the mirror.
The Possessed Trio Explanation (spoilers) Gravity Falls and Amphibia both contain cases where major characters are possessed by their series' respective antagonists (Dipper by Bill Cipher, and Marcy by The Core). Due to the spread of the "Collector Luz" fan theory, many fans would joke that the Owl House would complete a supposed "possession trio" between the three shows. Although the Collector Luz theory failed to actually happen, the possession trio ultimately was completed, due to Belos taking control of Hunter in "Thanks to Them".
Empress Luz (SPOILERS) Explanation While Collector Luz didn't happen and it's Hunter who got possessed instead, the "Watching and Dreaming" trailer did give fans an alternative by showing Luz wearing Emperor Belos' outfit and residing is his castle, hated by her friends and seemingly responsible petrifying people from her Hexside School. Since Luz and Philip have a lot in common, even more so than the Collector, many fans call this as Luz's ultimate nightmare and really play up the trauma of Luz being exactly like Belos with fan art and fan fiction, from Belos crowning her as his successor to Luz being forced to kill Hunter with a dagger in a sick game of reenacting the murder of Caleb Wittebane, all while Luz keeps insisting to herself that she's not like Belos.
King the blood donor (SPOILERS)Explanation With the reveal that King is a prepubescent Titan, that would mean his blood is Titan's Blood, and considering he and Eda used the last of it to get Luz and Hunter out of Belos' mind...
The Titan stands up and says "weh" (SPOILERS)Explanation With the reveal that King is a Titan, some people have joked that if the dead Titan was resurrected and stood up on the Day of Unity it would say "weh" (a Verbal Tic of King's).
Dana pirates her own showExplanation On April 30th, Dana Terrace posted a screenshot from the then most recent episode, "Edge of the World", talking about the voice actor playing a new character. The screenshot also included the watermark of a popular pirating website, which Dana later confirmed with the comment "Lmao yes the screenshot. I don’t have cable either." Considering that Dana had been highly critical of Disney before and encouraged fans to watch the show "however [they] are able", it quickly became a meme that Dana was leading by example. Funnily enough, the show's subreddit has a rule against advertising piracy, though they have a good reasoning to as providing piracy links would risk the sub getting shut down.
The real Willow could and would kick my assExplanation Adrian Graye has his subordinate, Severine impersonate Willow to fool Hunter and Gus. However, while Gus falls for it, Hunter gets suspicious and threatens her, scaring "Willow", causing him to conclude she's a fake, because he believes the real Willow is too strong a person to ever fear him.
Life changing field trip with Hunter (SPOILERS)Explanation Fans started pointing out similarities between Hunter and Zuko, and noticed that both have had episodes focusing on their interactions with specific members of the main cast. The joke specifically comes from a line of Toph's wherein she demands to go on a 'life changing field trip' with Zuko like everyone else, and "Labyrinth Runners" supposedly had Gus team up with an unlikely ally everyone guessed to be Hunter. Which was correct.
Traumatized children (SPOILERS)Explanation "Hollow Mind" ended with Hunter and Luz very much disturbed and traumatized from the revelations in Belos' mind, which was followed by "Edge of the World" in which King learns he's a Titan and the people he thought were his real family are actually an Apocalypse Cult looking to kill all Titans, and then "Labyrinth Runners" went into Gus' own trauma with being used by others and showed multiple characters having panic attacks. This resulted in jokes that the show is going down a checklist to traumatize all the children.
Amity's turn to get traumatized (SPOILERS)Explanation Promo art for "Clouds on the Horizon" showcased a picture of Amity's parents' accessories, and given she's the one of the few child characters who hasn't been personally traumatized in recent episodes, fans began joking that she's next on The Owl House's list of children to emotionally break. Fortunately, she doesn't get traumatized, but that's because the episode focuses more on her parents.
Adrian Graye is MarkiplierExplanation Many fans on social media have pointed out that Adrian Graye bears some resemblance to Markiplier. There are edits and animatics that present Graye and Mark as one in the same.
Hunter photobomb Explanation The joke started out when someone tried to take a screenshot of the pose that Amity and Willow made in "Labyrinth Runners" only to accidentally partially capture Hunter running by them. Fans either replaced Hunter with a different character running past Amity and Willow or put Hunter in different images to show him photobombing someone else.
The Collector is an Ultra Beast (SPOILERS)Explanation Fans were quick to point out that the Collector's prison in the In Between Realm bears a striking similarity to a Beast Ball.
What's The Collector's deal? (SPOILERS)Explanation The Collector's previous two appearances before "O Titan Where Art Thou" had them showing explicit sadism and interest in genocide, only for the opening of the episode to have them chanting about not being alone anymore and getting panicked about King leaving. This resulted in fans being unable to determine whether he's meant to be a genuinely evil villain like Belos, misunderstood or something else. Upon release, they act more like an innocent child who lacks the ability to comprehend the consequences of their actions, as well as stopping the Draining Spell so they can play with the people of the Boiling Isles instead.
Darius is not a catboy. (SPOILERS)Explanation Luz asks Raine if the rebellion has a cool name and they explain they indeed have one. However, Darius reacts with indignation and horror as Raine reveals the rebellion is the Covens Against the Throne -the CATS.
The Amphibia finale led to some crossover memes. Spoilers for that show to follow:
Steve's therapistExplanation In "O Titan Where Art Thou", Steve mentions that he has gone to therapy and suggests that Lilith should do the same. Considering the above meme about every child in the series being horribly traumatized, said therapist is going to have their work cut out for them. Also frequently made a Crossover with Amphibia by having Sasha Waybright be Steve's therapist, as she was revealed to grow up to be one in that show's final episode. This meme saw a resurgence after "King's Tide" aired, specifically Sasha meeting or being Luz and co's therapist after they end up trapped in the Human Realm while the Big Bad is free to rule their own realm.
Hunter and Anne (SPOILERS from both series)Explanation After sacrificing herself to save Amphibia, Anne gets to meet the deity who created the stones, which casually reveals that this version of her is a backup copy it made before she died so that it could offer her a position as its replacement. Fans of both shows quickly suggested that she should bond with Hunter, since both are clones created to serve a purpose.
"Crikey!" (SPOILERS) Explanation Luz's awkward and hilarious initial reaction to Amity's kiss. Usually used to compare her to Steve Irwin.
When the animation gets smooth Explanation The show has a tendency to have a noticeable Animation Bump for its biggest most dramatic scenes, typically major fight scenes. However, by far the biggest bump it had was for The Big Damn Kiss between Luz and Amity in the penultimate episode of Season 2.
Alador's divorce (SPOILERS)Explanation In "Clouds on the Horizon", after learning that Odelia knew the truth about the Day of Unity and kept quiet so she could gain more power and status out of it, Alador turns against her and quits Blight Industries. Fans were quick to notice how the whole thing came off as a divorce.
I can excuse X but I draw the line at homophobia (SPOILERS)Explanation Odalia is revealed to be fully aware and supportive of Belos' plot to wipe out everyone in the Demon Realm and abuses her own children emotionally, but her problems with Amity dating Luz are due to Luz being on wanted posters and is accepting of her daughter's sexuality.
Hunter's massive wardrobe. Explanation Unlike the others, who have the standard Limited Wardrobe of cartoon characters, Hunter is shown in a different outfit pretty much every time he makes an appearance, sometimes even switching multiple times per episode.
You looked the most like him. (SPOILERS)Explanation When everybody looks up at the sky after Luz gets taken by Kikimora, fans have pointed out that Hunter looks rather off. Recalling what Belos said about him being the closest to his progenitor in appearance of all the grimwalkers, people have started to poke fun of this frame.
BALLOONY! Explanation Numerous people also compare Hunter's offmodel look to Balloony from Phineas and Ferb.
"I don't feel safe!"Explanation A meme from the show's sister, this meme started to be used a lot in preparation for King's Tide.
Firebender LuzExplanation A still from the season 2 finale shows Luz crossing her arms while having fire on both hands, causing fans to jokingly make connections to Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Belos gets hit by a car.Explanation Fans have speculated a lot about what Belos's reaction to the modern human realm would be, the conclusion many are coming to being that he would step out into the road and immediately get mowed down by a car. Became Hilarious in Hindsight when his betrayal of the Collector results in them more or less doing the same thing to him, rocketing him into a wall at high speeds and causing him to splatter everywhere from inertia alone. Became even more hilarious when "Thanks to Them" technically has this exact thing happening to him, via a deer he was possessing getting a fatal collision.
Belos gets COVID.Explanation An alternative prediction for Belos's reaction to the human realm — the fact that he's an elderly man with an immune system still calibrated for 1600's America. Jokes about him contracting several diseases, including the Coronavirus, sprang up immediately.
Camila can't afford child support. Explanation (Spoilers) At the end of King's Tide, Luz, Amity, Willow, Gus and Hunter all end up stuck in the Human Realm. Since Camila is a single mother and already has to care for Vee, jokes have ensued about her making her newly-acquired children work on dead-end jobs to pay for their food. Became slightly less funny when "Thanks to Them" showcased that she was indeed finding her budget under strain, having multiple coupons around her bedroom to save as much money as possible.
"Ooh, guess what, kids? You’re deductible!"Explanation (Spoilers) A minor crossover with Amphibia which repurposes Hop Pop’s quote in such a way that Camilla is saying this to the Hexside Gang.
Amphibia ParallelsExplanation (Spoilers) Another crossover meme with Amphibia. "King's Tide" not only had a Freeze-Frame Bonus confirming that the two shows have a Shared Universe, but ends on a very similar note to "True Colors", Amphibia's season 2 finale; The main heroine and some of her Found Family being trapped on Earth with no way back after leaving the rest of her Family of Choice to an uncertain fate. Fans of both shows immediately started drawing comparisons.
Californians just look like that.Explanation The photo of Anne on Camila's tablet is simply a render taken from the other show, with no attempt at making her fit The Owl House's artstyle. This led to a joke that the differences in artstyle is actually diegetic, and for some reason people from California (Anne's home state) are weirdly lanky and have pinprick eyes.
Belos DripExplanation (Spoilers) In "King's Tide", when Luz is listing reasons why Philip would need a guide for the modern human world, one of them is pointing out how he would stick out like a sore thumb in his 17th-century outfit. Many people joked that Belos' sheer lack of drip is what Luz really hates about him, or that Luz insulting his clothes is the real reason he tried to kill her.
It really was about the dripExplanation (Spoilers) In "Thanks to Them", Masha's story about the Wittebane brothers is accompanied by cutout illustrations of the two brothers. Curiously, Caleb is depicted with a dark blue coat closely matching the coat worn by Philip as part of his 17th-century attire. By contrast, the illustration of Philip is coatless. This lead many fans to believe that Philip in "King's Tide" (and also earlier in "Elsewhere and Elsewhen") was actually wearing his dead brother's clothes. Thus, Philip's anger at Luz was about her insulting his clothes... since by insulting his clothes, she also inadvertently insultedhis brother.
GAME (Spoilers) Explanation It's become very popular to edit various sound effects over the Collector's absolute destruction of Belos, something that even the crew has done.
Enzo GabrielExplanation (Spoilers) A meme from the Brazilian side of the fandom. Enzo Gabriel is a common given name in Brazil, usually associated with hyperactive trouble-making kids, particularly those spoiled with unlimited iPad access. Since the Collector doesn't have a canon name, Twitter users were happy to roll with it, causing the name to trend in Brazil and even in America for a short while once the name spread.
This mama was NOT ready for trauma. Explanation (Spoilers) An inversion of the line Luz used back in "Really Small Problems" after it was proven that she was, in fact, not ready for trauma.
Splatter plans Explanation (Spoilers) It was revealed online that the crew had been pushing for there to be, when he's destroyed by The Collector, a 'splash zone' where Belos' remains would splatter only onto Hunter who would soon start sobbing. Many fans were disturbed by just how horrific it would have been, and a few were glad it was scrapped.
The Collector is on Creative mode. Explanation (Spoilers) Used as a way of describing The Collector's seemingly limitless ability to warp reality however they want and their status as a childlike god.
Hooty go Shooty Explanation Because of Hooty's Memetic Badass status and the popularity of the broader meme of giving unlikely fictional characters guns, fans have came to the conclusion that the heroes could solve any of their problems by giving Hooty a gun. Edits with him holding a gun are common, often involving a pun on his name.
Everyone joining the "Traumatised Coven" Explanation Pretty much all major characters had some kinda traumatising events to live through, so the Russian fanartist ScatterAdam made them join that "coven" (including the audience of the cartoon)
"Since owltwt is gaslighting people now, I’m gonna trick people into thinking that [insert fanon here] is canon." & "Actually, Dana already confirmed [fanon] in an [interview / stream / Twitter post], sorry for the misinfo!" Explanation A rising meme on Twitter has Owl House fans declare their intentions to gaslight the fanbase by claiming that something non-canon is canon, then proceeding to do just that.At least one person in the comments will fall for it.
Boscha Transexplanation A rumour started by user giggling_stars who posted a sketch of Boscha with a trans pride scarf, claiming it had been drawn by Dana Terrace during a stream. The claim spread like wildfire both among those who didn't realize it was false, and those who did but nevertheless liked the idea.
Vee will kill Belos (SPOILERS)Explanation After the cliffhanger of Belos surviving the Collector's Finger Poke of Doom and managing to escape to the Human Realm, his small size and composition has made it a rather common joke that Vee will eat him. Became Hilarious in Hindsight after "Thanks to Them", where Vee tried (albeit unsuccessfully) to do exactly that.
Duolingo Lumity Explanation Fans have noticed that two Duolingo characters who are often seen together, Lily and Zari, look a lot like Amity (after she dyed her hair purple) and Luz, respectively. Drawing Luz and Amity as Zari and Lily or vice versa is popular, often also involving comparisons between Hooty and Duo.
It's not uncommon for fans to fight over whether Hunter and Willow's ship name should be "Huntlow" or "Winter."
Hexsquad and video gamesExplanation (spoilers) With the main cast of teenagers (Fan Nicknamed the Hexsquad) now being stuck in the human realm for the foreseeable future, fanworks of Luz and Vee introducing them to video games popped up a lot, particularily Mario Kart.
Hunter and Hollow KnightExplanation Some fans started joking that Hunter would take a liking to Hollow Knight and relating way too much to that game's protagonist. Both Hunter and Ghost are Artificial Humanoids created by a theocratic emperor who has tons of dead siblings thrown away in a ditch. Became Hilarious in Hindsight when it turned out that Luz has Holler Knight installed on her computer.
Eda SaysExplanation An redrawn version of the Sonic Says meme featuring Teen!Eda originating from this post on r/TheOwlHouse.
"My weak nerd arms!"Explanation A quote from Luz in the very first episode. It is often brought up how Luz had no strength to lift a lever early in the series, but is now shown to be able to carry and swing Amity around who is much heavier.
HERE LIES BELOS. HE NEVER SCORED.Explanation (spoilers) It's all but confirmed that Belos/Philip canonically dies a virgin, given that he never once tried to ever enter any relationships all the time he was alive.
c!Hunter.Explanation Because there's some overlap between fans of the Dream SMP and fans of The Owl House, there have been multiple instances of people accidentally using the c!-prefix — used among DSMP fans to differentiate between characters (c!) and content creators (cc!) — for Owl House characters. Hunter is the most common victim of this, likely because of the large similarities between him and the character of Tommy, and crossover drawings of Hunter dressed like Tommy are often jokingly labelled "c!Hunter".
"Misunderstood"Explanation Matthew Rhys, Belos' voice actor, once said that he considers Belos to be Not Evil, Just Misunderstood, which many fans took to mean Belos might be a Tragic Villain of some sort similar to King Andrias. Then "Hollow Mind" was released, which reveals that Belos is a racist, genocidal religious fanatic and, if anything, even more evil than previously thought. Fans took to joking that Rhys had meant that fans "misunderstood" just how big of a bastard Belos is.
TherapyExplanation (spoilers) After "King's Tide", it became a meme that the kids are in dire need of therapy, much like Catra, all of the main characters of Arcane, and the Calamity Trio. The last one is especially notable, since Sasha as an adult got a psychology degree to help teens with emotional baggage like she used to have. However based on the calendars, both shows are actually only a few years apart if you exclude the time skip, meaning that Sasha is most likely still in high school. The general response to this is that these scenarios happened several years after both shows ended or that it is simply a joke.
MoringMark Edits Explanation A subset of memes on Twitter which focuses on editing MoringMark comics. These edits usually cross over with chicaneryposting.
NOT THE NOODLE! Explanation The promotional poster for Season 3 showed off the new looks for the characters, including Hunter's new hairstyle. Fans quickly started lamenting the loss of his Idiot Hair, some even treating it as if it were an actual character that was killed off.
Flapjack pulled it off. Explanation Since there have been two occasions where Flapjack pulled on Hunter's Idiot Hair quite hard, people have joked that he pulled it so hard that it came off.
"You guys wanted the hair noodle back, but at what cost?"Explanation (Spoilers for Season 3!) In "Thanks to Them", Hunter ended up getting his "hair noodle" back... As a result of Belos possessing him, with Flapjack being mortally wounded in the process and shortly after sacrificing himself to save Hunter's life. Shortly after the episode, production associate Rebecca Rose made this post with the aforementioned quote, much to the pained, humored shock of fans.
With the way the Hexsquad was framed on the Season 3 poster, specifically as a Ragtag Bunch of Misfits trying to hunt down/escape from an evil monster, some people immediately started making comparisons to the Scooby Gang, and referring to them as Those Meddling Kids.
"No, it's only- [X] years old?! I remember seeing this in theaters…" Explanation A line from Eda from "Eclipse Lake", used by older fans expressing surprise at how old certain properties from their younger years have become.
"Yes, you're old, who cares?!" Explanation Amity's follow-up line is sometimes included.
Chibi Tiny Tales! Explanation With The Owl House getting multiple Chibi Tiny Tales shorts of the characters doing various cute things, some fanartists have decided to make their own Tiny Tales shorts of some of the darkest, most heartwrenching moments in the show, like the end of "Agony Of A Witch", and the death of Caleb Wittebane.
HunterXHunter/Hunter's Self-love. Explanation After a Redditor made a photo edit of a passed-out Hunter from "Hunting Palismen" kissing himself, people began making jokes about it being their favorite ship or about how Hunter is "practicing self-love". A few others even it compared to the Rick and Morty episode "Bethic Twinstinct".
"What are you gonna do, cancel us more?" Explanation Viewers who check in with the show's behind-the-scenes production would likely be aware of the struggles Dana Terrace experienced with Disney executives when trying to include LGBT+ representation. While the official reason why the show's third season was greatly reduced was due to branding, many speculate that the real reason was due to the same-sex relationship between Luz and Amity, major characters whose scenes cannot be cut out. Fans have been making memes about Dana being a badass by making the LGBT+ representation even more obvious as the show was already cancelled and she's got nothing left to lose.
After learning that Luz writes Good Witch Azura fanfiction, many people have made jokes about her explaining her time in the Demon realm in AO3-notes while apologizing for the lack of updates.
Disney, stop possessing children! Explanation After Belos took control of Hunter in "Thanks to Them", fans were quick to point out other Disney characters (Dipper, Lena and Marcy) who were also possessed by their series' respective antagonists. See also "The Possessed Trio" above.
Different possessionExplanation Before "King's Tide" came out, a popular theory was that Luz would be possessed by The Collector, though that turned out to be untrue. Once Hunter got possessed by Belos, several fans joked that the fandom was right that possession would happen, just not to the character everyone suspected.
Always clean and disinfect cuts/don't touch with your bare hands Explanation Hunter gets possessed after some of Belos's slime gets into a cut on his finger, prompting fans to make "PSA announcements" about properly taking care to treat injuries and not touch suspicious materials with open wounds. Additionally, some have joked that Hunter would have avoided getting possessed had he continued wearing gloves like he constantly did before.
"Sounds like big bro got a hot witch girlfriend and little bro got upset." Explanation Masha summarizes the story of Philip and Caleb Wittebane as this, and many fans use this line to make fun of Belos's anti-witch agenda as a petty vendetta over the fact his big bro got a girlfriend. Some even joke that Philip started hating witches because he didn't get laid by one himself.
Vee looking scared pose Explanation While everyone takes off to fight Belos, Vee is seen in the background with her eyes wide and looking disturbed. Many fans have used this image to explain their reactions to "Thanks to Them."
Smug Vee Explanation Similarly, this image of her chilling and wearing 3D glasses in a movie theatre in the credits quickly caught on, with it sometimes being paired with the previous image as a before-and-after comparison.
Hunter's a Wolf Kid Explanation During his stay in the Human Realm, Hunter gained an extreme fascination with wolves, to the point he calls them "mystical beasts" and even used a sewing machine to make a wolf t-shirt. This caused several fans to remember and joke about their own wolf phases they had as kids.
Inside you there are two wolves Explanation While possessed by Belos, Hunter is wearing the wolf shirt he made, resulting in fans making jokes about the "there are two wolves" meme and how there really are two people inside of Hunter.
"Would you still love me if I was a worm?" Explanation This already memetic question is often asked under Vee x Masha fanart, since Vee's basilisk form has a tail instead of legs.
Comparing Vee to Kirby and editing in Kirby sound effects. Explanation In Thanks to Them, Vee jumps to eat Belos's magic in a move similar to the famous pink puffball, resulting in people calling her Kirby, or KirVee.
Hunter Noceda Deamonne Clawthorne Porter Park. Explanation Since Hunter doesn't have a canonical surname (you could argue that it's Wittebane, but associating him with that name is controversial for multiple reasons), fans started headcanoning him with the surnames of different characters he could be adopted by. This very quickly got out of hand.
Hunter is collecting parental figures Explanaion Related to the above meme, over the course of show, multiple adults have started to develop a parent-child sort of relationship with Hunter, first with Darius and later Camila. This has grown even further with the implications that Hunter may be distantly related to the Clawthorne family.
Gus the 3rd/5th/7th wheel. Explanation Gus is the only member of the main cast not to have any Ship Tease moments with any love interest. The fact that even Vee got some with Masha before he did prompted much light ribbing on his lack of witches.
Hunter Trauma Explanation The sheer extent and severity of Hunter's Dark and Troubled Past plus the number of horrific events that befall him at least once an episode tend to spark memes among fans.
Belos's Among Us jacket. Explanation The blue jacket Belos wears in "King's Tide" has a golden emblem of the Gravesfield town logo on its chest. However, the heavily simplified version of the logo drawn for animation looks a lot like a crewmate.
Dead Raine / How Camileda can still win. Explanation Given that Raine was last seen succumbing to the Draining Spell in "King's Tide", many have jokingly assumed that they were killed offscreen. This, coupled with Camila heading to the Boiling Isles in the closing moments of "Thanks To Them", has led to a resurgence in the Camila / Eda ship.
Hunter celebrating 2008. Explanation In "Thanks to Them", when Hunter wears an outfit based on a character from the Cosmic Frontier book and claims that it's modern fashion, Vee points out that the book was written in the 1990s and takes place in 2008, and his response implies that he believes 2008 hasn't happened yet. During the change over from 2022 to 2023, some people joked that Hunter would be unaware of what year it is and celebrate the arrival of 2008 instead, with people also drawing fanart of him doing so in the same costume.
Luz's orbExplanation In previews for For the Future, Luz is shown with a staff with a swirling galaxy pattern at the end, later simplified into a simple purple orb. While this is most likely either a transitory stage of the palisman awakening, or censoring to avoid revealing the palisman's true form, it didn't stop fans from joking that everyone had been wrong and the form of Luz's palisman was in fact an orb. Occasionally crosses over with Pondering My Orb.
Five Nights At the Collector's / Animatronics Phase (SPOILERS)Explanation In previews for For the Future, most of the Coven heads, Hooty, and the other victims of the Collector are shown to suffer from Puppet Permutation, giving them a resemblance to the animatronic villains in the FNAF series. Many have taken this joke and run with it.
iTunesagainExplanation Just over two weeks before the official airing, For the Future was leaked by Canadian iTunes. This was frustrating enough, but many fans of The Owl House's sister show, Amphibia, pointed out that this was not the first time, as True Colors had been leaked in the same way.
Belos the hair stylist/Belos's Possession Mullet (SPOILERS) Explanation Since Belos possessing Hunter and Raine caused their hair to grow longer for both of them, people made jokes about him purposefully making changes to their hair, with some variations being specifically about him giving them mullets.
Caleb haunting Belos has spawned quite a few memes, especially since one particular shot of Caleb strongly resembles the "Pathetic" meme.
Golden Guard meme cultureExplanation (SPOILERS) In "For the Future", Belos is haunted by his brother as well as all the grimwalkers he has killed over the years. While the episode leaves it ambiguous if these are actual ghosts or just Belos' deteriorating mental state, many fans went with the former interpretation and expanded it to having the legion of former golden guards be invisibly haunting Belos through the entire series, including cheering on whenever anything goes wrong for their uncle. It also led to a trend of making memes from the perspective of said golden guards making light of their abysmal life stories.
Amity's ex (SPOILERS)Explanation The scene in "For the Future" where Boscha begs Amity to come back reads heavily like a former lover trying to get back with their ex who has since moved on to someone else. Many a joke were made about Boscha being hopelessly in love with Amity, or even her ex, and hasn't moved on in the slightest.
Pizza Bagels Explanation The Collector's insistence on Odalia making pizza bagels has become a meme about how their favorite food is pizza bagels.
Dratini (SPOILERS)Explanation Many fans have noted Stringbean's resemblance to the Pokemon known as Dratini and have referred to the palisman by the Pokemon's name.
Weirdmaggeddon 2.0 (SPOILERS)Explanation It has been noted that The Collector's takeover of the Boiling Isles is reminiscent of Bill Cipher's takeover of Gravity Falls, between the two creating a Ominous Floating Castle, incapacitating the setting's inhabitants one wayor another, and capturing them and taking them to said castle in the sky.
What is it with villains having floating castles? (SPOILERS)Explanation In Gravity Falls, Amphibia, and The Owl House (which coincidentally are considered part of a spiritual trilogy), all 3 shows have a major recurring antagonist throughout the series create their own Ominous Floating Castle at some point.
It's all just a dream.Explanation Aside from the "Watching and Dreaming" trailer having the line "you have to wake up!" in it, the infamous theory that the whole show was Luz's dream is a joke within the fandom, discussing how not only would it be an unsatisfying and terrible twist, it would be a massive cop out as a whole. The line in the trailer caused many fan comics and crack theories to arise even more. Thankfully, Luz's nightmare sequence ends before the episode title is even shown.
"Here's how the Wittebane flashback can still win."Explanation Before all three of season 3's episodes, fans heavily theorized that the latest one would contain a flashback sequence that would properly explain what the hell happened between Philip and Caleb that ended with the former stabbing the latter to death. When "Thanks to Them" and "For the Future" gave out some new information, but not enough to piece together what actually happened, people started making jokes about how desperately they needed "Watching and Dreaming" to have the Wittebane flashback in it.
Luz and Hunter shall reenact the Wittebane story! Explanation The most popular theory is that Luz and Hunter will be forced to play the roles of Philip and Caleb respectively, with various fan artworks showing Luz stabbing Hunter with the dagger and being horrified by it. This theory originated from "Watching and Dreaming" trailer showing Luz wearing Emperor Belos' outfit and residing in Belos' castle as the tyrannical despot.
Oh boy! I can't wait for the next episode this Saturday!Explanation Due to the fact that the series ends with "Watching and Dreaming", it's not uncommon for fans to play up their denial that the series is over through saying things like this.
Advanced Friendship. Explanation Due to a joke tweet by Hunter's VA Zeno referring to Hunter and Willow's eventual relationship as such, this has pretty much became Huntlow's version of Lumity's "dressing up and traveling" meme. Even MoringMark made a comic based on this.
Bro thinks they’re Steven Universe. (SPOILERS) Explanation After learning the values of empathy and kindness, the Collector immediately attempts to give Belos a Cooldown Hug, drawing parallels to the titular Cartoon Network character.
Disney TVA Protagonist Curse.Explanation (MASSIVE SPOILERS) Luz temporarily dies thanks to a hit from Belos before coming back thanks to a revival from a godlike figure, in a similar manner to Anne. Fans immediately took note of the trend, and would also begin darkly joking (and discussing) on who the next target will be, with Molly McGee being a common target of discussion due to peculiar circumstances of her first season finale.
Tomato Amity discovers Titan Luz Explanation A popular fanfic trend after the finale is to show Amity learning about Luz's Titan-powered super mode, who is usually overcome with blushing at seeing Luz as a godly Cute Monster Girl.
We were robbed of [heavily anticipated plotline that never came true either due to the shortening or because it was never planned].Explanation In an ironic twist for fans who were thinking that Earth episodes were cut, a behind the scenes look after "King's Tide" aired heavily implies that the supposed cut Earth episodes is supposed to be non-existent save for the series finale if Dana and company actually got their way, as shown with the presence of planned Season 3 storylines taking place in the Boiling Isles and storyboards showing the portal key still in the possession of the heroes in episodes after "Eclipse Lake". This was later further confirmed in the Post-Hoot after "Watching and Dreaming", where Seasons 2B and beyond were written with the cancellation in mind, which happened during the airing of Season 2A.
