Kay: Flowers and butterflies are kind of rare motifs for flags, don't you think?
Edgeworth: Well, when they used to be Cohdopia, the government used to take pride in its land. The citizens loved the rich, bountiful nature all around them, thus the design.

Countries have flags. This fact is fairly important, given a flag is one of the most recognizable symbols a country can have. So if one wanted to make a well-established Fictional Country, it's only natural that country gets its own flag as well. And with symbolizing a fictional country comes many intentional design choices, often inspired heavily by design trends in real-life flags.

Where exactly flags originally came from is difficult to say. There are many possibilities, ranging from early Egyptian nobility to Roman military standards. The modern use most likely stems from medieval banners and heraldry.

The purpose of a flag in any setting is for it to be easily identified by those who see it. As such, flags tend to be brightly colored and utilize simple designs. There is sometimes imagery on them, but complex pictures are more difficult to embroider.

Typically flags are influenced by their nation's history. Even if they are simply colors in geometric shapes, they are quite often colors that were significant at a defining moment. Others might have symbols related to their founders, heroes, myths, or other significant imagery.

Sometimes creators will blatantly invoke real-life flags to get their point across. A red, white, and blue flag will represent their version of Eagleland, especially if stars or stripes are involved. Red flags or ones that use images of workers' tools will mean it's the flag of Commie Land, and some will display Red and Black Totalitarianism. Other times works that are 20 Minutes into the Future may take real flags and modify them to reflect changes that have occurred between the present and whenever this is, such as adding stars to the US flag, a relatively easy change.

In all cases, there is the possibility of their enemies expressing their dislike by burning it.

If particularly ham-handed, it may result in Sigil Spam.

    Anime & Manga
  • Code Geass:
    • The flag of the Holy Britannia Empire resembles the St. George's Cross, the flag of England, with the design similar to the Union Jack. It also has its own coat of arms in the center which bears the lion and dragon.
    • The Chinese Federation flag is based on the flag used by the rebels who are against the Qing Dynasty during the Wuchang Uprising in 1911.
  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Since many of the characters are part of the Amestrian military, the country's flag is frequently seen. It depicts a white dragon-ish creature on a blue background.
  • Love Live!: The Love Live victory flag appears in multiple series and features the text "Love Live Victory" on a red background with gold laurels, an ornate gold pattern, a red ribbon, and a gold fringe.
  • The Principality of Zeon from Mobile Suit Gundam has a flag based on that of Nazi Germany, with their emblem replacing the swastika.
  • One Piece: The flag of the world government is a white flag, having a blue cross with filled-in blue circles at the ends and the middle. This is in contrast to the pirate crews, who have your typical Jolly Roger.
  • The Saga of Tanya the Evil: Each Fantasy Counterpart Culture has its own flag, sometimes based on their real life counterparts.
    • The Empire has a red, black, white, and yellow flag featuring a coat of arms of a two-headed dragon in the center. It is reminiscent of various Imperial German flags.

  • Voltes V: The flag of the Boazanian Empire is Prussian blue, with an emblem of a yellow bird on it - see here. It looks very similar to the Arms of the French Empire (1804-1815) flag.

    Blogs
  • Flag Wars: The flag representing the Flag Wars features a blue kiwi in front of a white square with a white cross behind it over a blue field. Other fictional flags have appeared in various polls.

    Comic Books
  • The Adventures of Tintin: Throughout the series, Tintin travels to a number of fictional nations, but none of them display their national flag more frequently or proudly as Borduria. In King Ottokar's Sceptre, Borduria is depicted as a fascist state and Syldavia's warmongering neighbor, with a stark, eye-catching red-and-black flag to match. In post-1945 stories, Borduria is depicted more along the lines of a communist dictatorship with a Stalin-esque cult of personality built up around their leader, Marshal Kûrvi-Tasch; Borduria's flag is likewise changed to a new design, one that features a circumflex symbol that closely resembles their leader's prominent mustache.
  • Black Panther: Wakanda's flag consists of a panther's head surrounded by tribal patterns on a black-and-red field.
  • Fantastic Four: Doctor Doom's country, Latveria, has a flag consisting of a horizontal black-and-red cross on a green field, with a stylized Odal rune in its intersection.
  • Judge Dredd: Mega-City One, one of the successor states to the Old America, uses a tilted version of the US flag with only five stars (a reference to the Council of Five, the city-state's ruling body), sometimes with the Justice Department eagle included in the center.

    Fan Works
  • The King Nobody Wanted: Discussed in Chapter 68, when a group of Dothraki khals is discussing foreign news and Westeros comes up in conversation. The Dothraki use abstract shapes and colors in their banners, each pattern being unique to the khal that bears it, and some are quite skeptical about the concept of adorning one's banners with animals, human figures, and other such things in the Westerosi manner.
"No, no," said Drogo. "This is symbolism. The Andals use banners of war, as we do, and on them, they like to place beasts."
"Beasts?" said Motho, puzzled. "But that is folly. A banner should be pleasing shapes and colors that belong to you and you alone, not an animal. Why, when men see the red and white triangle of my banners, they do not say 'that is a mouse,' for example, they say 'that is Khal Motho's khalasar'."
"Some Andals do use such shapes," began Drogo.
"The sensible ones, yes," interjected Motho.
  • In the expanded Discworld of A.A. Pessimal, the fics reflect the evolving Discworld of Terry Pratchett, where the various nations of the Disc become mirror-reflections of Roundworld countries. Thus, Quirm's flag is suspiciously similar to the French tricolour, Borogravia's is the gold-over-black of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Rimwards Howondaland flies the pre-1994 blue, white, and orange of the old South Africa. However, Ankh-Morpork retains its canonical flag of the hippos and shield (this also appears as an inset on the flag of the Discworld's "South Africa", where the union flag would have been in our world). In The Price of Flight its Air Force is also awarded a Standard which is not a million miles away from the banner of the Royal Air Force on our world — except that the Air Watch Standard carries the hippo-and-shield flag of Ankh-Morpork where the Union Flag goes on the RAF's colours.

    Films — Live-Action
  • Black Panther (2018): The flag of Wakanda features the Pan-African colors and, of course, the symbol of a black panther.
  • Event Horizon: The crew's flag patches show an Australian flag with an aborigine flag rather than a Union Jack, to indicate Australia has broken its ties to Britain, an American flag with fifty-five stars, and a European Union flag with thirty-two stars.
  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Dr. Frank N Furter's castle has the Transexual, Transylvania flag with a lightning bolt in it. Although the country is more of a planet since Frank and his servants are aliens.
  • Star Wars:
    • The Galactic Republic uses a black-on-white wheel symbol with eight spokes, which traditionally appears on its banners and is often emblazoned on its vessels and vehicles as well; this was derived from the symbol of the ancient Bendu religion. The Empire later uses a version of this with six spokes and inverted colors, typically displaying it against a gray background.
    • The Jedi Order uses a firebird symbol, red on white, stylized to resemble a spike surrounded by swooping wings. Later on, the Rebel Alliance and the New Republic would utilize it as well, as the Old Republic's roundel symbol had by then become too associated with the Empire.
  • Starship Troopers: The United Citizens Federation uses a blue and green flag with a stylized eagle in the middle drawn to resemble a military aircraft. This is a very subversive way of Putting on the Reich since green and blue are often seen as calming, heroic colors, in contrast to Red and Black Totalitarianism. Eagles have also been used in the heraldry of many empires, from the Romans to the Nazis to the Americans.

    Literature
  • Altina the Sword Princess: In Volume 2, Altina changes the banner of the Beilschmidt Border Regiment to a steel shield on a green field, to symbolize her taking on a commitment to protecting the people of Belgaria from enemies without and within.
  • Animal Farm: Following the Rebellion, Snowball constructs a flag for the new animal-run nation out of a green tablecloth that once belonged to Mrs. Jones, painting a white hoof and horn on it to symbolize the supremacy of animals over humans. One of the final developments in the Full-Circle Revolution is the removal of the hoof and horn, making the flag solid green.
  • Discworld: The Ankh-Morpork flag, mentioned in The Fifth Elephant and displayed in The Last Hero, shows the Ankh-Morpork coat of arms: a shield quartered by the Tower of Art and the River Ankh, with cabbages in the first quarter, a money bag in the second and third, and a plain black field in the fourth, supported by two hippos and surmounted by a morepork (a kind of owl) perched on an ankh.
  • Gate: Thus The JSDF Fought There: The Empire has a red flag with a stylized golden sun spread across most of its field. The same motif also appears on its footsoldiers' shields, and on banners that hang in Emperor Molt Sol Augustus's throne room.
  • Jetlag Travel Guides feature the flags of all three fictional countries the guides focus on:
    • The flag of Molvania, the Trikolor, is vertically divided, red hoist-side with hammer, sickle, and shovel in the canton and yellow fly-side.
    • The flag of San Sombrero, the Camouflagio, is a woodland camouflage design.
    • The flag of Phaic Tan looks like a top-down view of a ping-pong table, with paddles and six balls in the canton. It's also hinged to make folding easier.
  • The Lord of the Rings: The royal banner of Rohan is a white horse on a green field, the banner of the Prince of Dol Amroth is a silver swan on a blue field, the banner of the Ruling Stewards of Gondor is a plain white flag, and Aragorn's standard combines the White Tree of Gondor with seven stars and a high crown to invoke the Rightful King Returns.
  • Lord Marksman and Vanadis: The national flag of the Kingdom of Brune is the rampant red stallion Bayard, while their neighbors the Kingdom of Zhcted uses the black dragon on a red field as national banner, representing their mythical founder the Black Dragon King. Each of the Vanadis use personal banners that represent their weapons and domain.
  • The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress: After the revolution, the flag of the independent Moon features a black field with stars, a brass cannon (in the words of Professor Bernardo de la Paz, as "a symbol for all fools who are so impractical as to think they can fight City Hall"), TANSTAAFL ("There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch") to proclaim the origin of this revolution, and a red bar sinister to say how most of the inhabitants came there.
  • The Mouse That Roared: The Duchy of Grand Fenwick has a flag with a double-headed eagle, with one head saying "Aye" and the other saying "Nay". The founder of Grand Fenwick, Sir Roger Fenwick, said that the only thing he learned while attending Oxford University was that an "Aye" could be changed into "Nay" (and vice versa) if enough words were applied.
  • Red Dwarf: According to The Last Human, GELF society has flags which feature the double-helix of the nucleic acid DNA on them, alongside the words "The Key to Life ? nothing should be denied" in a strange script.
  • A Song of Ice and Fire: As the series is centered around conflicts between pseudo-medieval noble houses, heraldry is a major setting element.
    • Each Westerosi house has a symbol, usually but not always an animal, with specific colors, which is liberally depicted on flags, banners, draperies, clothing, tents, and anything else that can have a design printed on it.
      • Among the major houses, House Stark uses a grey wolf on white, representing its traditional association with winter and the northern wilderness.
      • House Tully has a red fish on blue and red, as its castle lies on the Red Fork of the river Trident.
      • House Arryn has a blue falcon on silver, representing its seat on a high mountain range.
      • House Greyjoy, a line of pseudo-Viking marine raiders, has a golden kraken on a black field.
      • House Lannister, rich in gold and based in an area once famous for its wild lions, has a golden lion on red.
      • House Baratheon, based in a forested land and rumored to descend from a king's bastard son, has a black crowned stag on gold.
      • House Tyrell, based in the richest crop land in the continent, has a golden rose on green.
      • House Martell, a martial house from a desert land, has a red sun pierced by a golden spear on an orange field.
      • The royal family, House Targaryen, has a three-headed red dragon on black, representing the beasts that they conquered the land with and the three siblings who led the conquest.
    • Outside of Westeros, flags and heraldry are fairly rare — the only notable use is by the city-states of Slaver's bay, who use banners and decorations adorned with the symbol of Ghiscari civilization, a scorpion-tailed harpy. The harpy of Old Ghis clutched a thunderbolt in her claws; in the modern day, the harpy of Astapor carries a chain and manacles, while the harpy of Meereen holds a whip in one claw and a collar in the other.
  • The Wheel of Time: The banners of most of the nations of the Westlands are described in either the main text of the novels or the glossaries at the end of them. A few examples include:
    • Andor: a White Lion rampant on a red field
    • Cairhien: a gold sunrise on a blue field
    • Illian: Nine golden bees on a green field
    • Tear: Three white crescent moons on a field of red and gold, divided on a diagonal line.
  • In "When in the Course...", a H. Beam Piper novella, the new flag adopted for Hos-Hostigos is a quarter-arc rainbow on a white field, chosen so that anyone who was annexed later would at least be able to find his colors in the flag.

    Live-Action TV
  • The Big Bang Theory: Sheldon, a big fan of vexillology, designed a flag for his and Leonard's apartment. It depicts "a golden lion rampant over a field of azure", as per Sheldon's description.
  • Dinosaurs: In the two-part episode "Nuts to War", Robbie and Spike are drafted and sent off to fight in a war. Earl assures Fran that they'll be safe so long as they have the dinosaur flag on their uniforms. Said flag is a series of red and white concentric circles — in other words, a literal target on their backs.
  • Kings: The nation of Gilboa has a flag showing a butterfly, which are used in this setting as the sign of God's chosen king.
  • The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: Tolkien never gave a clear official banner for Numenor in the books and fans always had different interpretations of Numenor's banners. The show went with a golden sun on a navy blue background under Queen Miriel and her father's rule. But with the King's death and his daughter being on a military campaign in Middle-earth, Ar-Pharazon gives orders the banners to be switched to a silver sun on a black background, signifying Ar-Pharazon seizing the power in Miriel's absence.
  • Stargate Atlantis: One episode begins with one of Atlantis' SG teams arriving on a planet where they're stunned to see a flag that seems to have Rodney McKay's face. When shown it, McKay recalls that he and Col. Sheppard found what they believed to be a simulation program pitting two nations against each other, and they started playing it. Sheppard left his nation's name and flag alone, though he started taking it in a more militaristic direction, while Rodney took the time to style his nation after himself, including the aforementioned flag.
  • Star Trek:
    • The flag of the United Federation of Planets is clearly based on the flag of the United Nations, with a blue circle flanked by laurel garlands (symbolizing peace) on a blue field. Unlike the UN flag, where the circle is a globe, the UFP flag depicts a starfield. In season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery, many stars are missing since the chronologically last time the flag was seen, indicating the secession of a number of member states.
    • The flag of the Romulan Star Empire depicts a stylized bird of prey with two planets, the home planets of the Empire, Romulus and Remus, grasped in its talons.
    • Star Trek: The Next Generation: "The Royale" has the crew discover the body of an American astronaut with fifty-two stars on his flag patch, indicating he came from some time in the early 21st century.

    Podcasts
  • Flagged for Content:
    • The podcast is represented by an original flag called the Flag For Content that appears in the background of the videos, with a variation in the logo. It has a blue background with a red flame in the center and a gold microphone inside it. There is a gold pattern on the right side of the flag.
    • A commonly discussed subject in episodes is unofficial flag redesigns, such as the Keystone flag redesign of Pennsylvania's flag by Tara Stark. This flag is a blue, yellow, and green tricolor in the shape of a keystone
    • In Episode 28, the house flags from Game of Thrones are briefly discussed.
    • Alongside the Keystone flag in Andy's room is the flag of the YouTube channel Flags in 50, which is a white flag with a black outline of a circle with a small flag inside of it.
    • The North Star flag is the focus of Episode 36 and is a beloved flag redesign of Minnesota. It was designed in 1989 and has been the focus of a movement to redesign the state flag. It often appears in the background of Andy's room.
    • David Davis made multiple fictional flags for the factions in his comic Cosmic Dash, which he showed in Episode 39.
    • Fictional flags in science fiction are the main focus of Episode 39, with flags such as the United Federation of Planets and the Principality of Zeon being discussed.
    • The Fog and Gold flag is a redesign of the flag of San Francisco by Brian Stokle and features a phoenix. This flag is the primary focus of Episode 29. Other San Francisco redesign concepts by Brian also appear in the episode.

    • Curtis Tarver's sports and marching band blog/YouTube channel 80 Minutes of Regulation has a flag that is a white-red-white horizontal tricolor with the logo in the middle, a drum seen from above with the number 80 on it.
    • Bradley Lockhart has created a wide variety of orignal flags, most commonly related to his home state of Washington. Aside from his officially adopted flag of Bellingham, he has made various proposals such as flag designs for Washington, Olympia, and Seattle. The latter he created two designs for, the most famous being the Orca Face flag. He also made a conceptual redesign of the American flag for a contest based on the lyrics of "America the Beautiful".

    Tabletop Games
  • Traveller: The Third Imperium uses the Imperial Sunburst (a circle with a sunburst of twenty-one rays around it) on flags and banners. The exact colors of the banner, circle, and sunburst vary by which part of the Imperial government is being represented, such as a yellow circle and sunburst on a black banner for the Imperial Navy.
  • Warhammer: Iconography and vexillology are a major part of the settings' backgrounds, as creating tabletop armies and making factions and subfactions visually distinct involves giving them distinctive, recognizable symbols.
    • Warhammer 40,000:
      • The Imperium of Man uses a double-headed eagle with outstretched wings. In-universe, this symbolizes the union of Earth and Mars that began the Imperium. Out-of-universe, it's derived from the Austro-Hungarian crest.
      • All Space Marine chapters have traditional symbols with some meaning to them — a wolf's head on grey for the Space Wolves, a black dragon's head on green for the Salamanders, and so on.
      • Ork Klanz lack formal banners but have symbols and themes that turn up in their iconography. The brutal and aggressive Goffs have a black bull's head, the Blood Axes have crossed red axes, the Evil Sunz and Bad Moonz their respective celestial bodies, and so on.
    • Warhammer Fantasy:
      • The Empire itself has no single flag but uses a range of iconography including skulls and griffons, as well as symbols of specific meaning like a warhammer (after Ghal Maraz, the famous weapon of their deified founder Sigmar, which is wielded by the Emperors), a comet with two tails (a cosmic phenomenon that the Empire associates with Sigmar) and the imperial cross (resembling the German iron cross, symbolic of unity and a famous battle in the Empire's founding). The provinces and city-states of the Empire each have their own flags, with symbols relevant to their own histories.
      • The Bretonnian dukedoms each have traditional heraldry, used by their lords and, in modified form, by the lord's sworn knights and vassals. Examples include Parravon's gold pegasus on black, derived from its famous pegasus riders; l'Anguille's blue sea monster on white, representing the beasts that live along its coasts; and Bastonne's red dragon on gold, in honor of its founder, Gilles le Bretton, who among other things was a famous dragonslayer.
      • Each High Elven kingdom uses iconography derived from some notable trait or tradition, such as Chrace's white lion head to represent its wild lions, Caledor's coiling dragon in honor of its Dragon Riders, or Ellyrion's white horse head to represent its equestrian traditions.
      • Ogres as a whole use a stylized ring of teeth to represent the Great Maw, their god. Each tribe uses a modification of this as its specific symbol — the wealthy Goldtooth tribe has a Maw with a golden fang, the Feastmasters have a cauldron ringed by teeth, and so on.

    Theatre
  • One of Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating's (unrealized) goals was for Australia to have a new flag; in Keating! The Musical, he's shown a series of design proposals during the song "The Arse End Of The Earth" ranging from the US flag with an outline of Australia in the blue field, to a yellow circle on a red background with a black kangaroo silhouette, to a drawing of Dame Edna's glasses.

    Video Games
  • Age of Empires III: The fictional Circle of Ossus has a flag squared in light blue and dark yellow with tons of Ancient Conspiracy references.

  • ARMA is usually set in fictional nations and conflicts, and has flags to accompany those fictional factions:
    • ArmA: Armed Assault: The flag of the Kingdom of Sahrani ("South Sahrani") features a vertical Triband with the country's coat of arms in the middle, a grifon circled by a laurel wreath; "North Sahrani" (the Democratic Republic of Sahrani) has a flag divided between a diagonal line from the bottom right side, with black on the left and orange on the right, with the country's crest in the middle, a socialist star circled by wheat and cogs.
    • Arma 2 (and its Spin-Off DayZ) set in the nation of Chernarus features a complex flag, it's all green, with a big yellow star circled by smaller stars in the canton, and in the bottom half features divergent white stripes; the country's military (The Chernarus Defense Forces) have simple horizontal bands, yellow at the top and green at the bottom. The ChDKZ rebels have a horizontal tricolor of green, black, and red with a red star in the middle; and the independent NAPA guerrillas have a flag with a black smaller hoist and green fly, with crossed swords where the colors meet.
    • Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead shifts the setting to Takistan. The country (and their army) have a horizontal tricolour of white, black, and green, with a stylized star-and-crescent; the Takistani Rebels have a flag with a black smaller hoist and green fly divided by a serrated line, while Takistani Militia has a simple black flag with a star-and-crescent.

The Livonian Defense Forces (LDF) have a blue field with said coat on arms in the middle, surrounded by laurel wreaths, two rifles, and the motto "Siła i Czujność" ("Strength and Vigilance") on the bottom.
  • Deltarune: The "Spamton Sweepstakes" video features a flag of Spamton, which is a green flag with an image of Spamton and his name.
  • Final Fantasy XIV: Every city-state in the setting bears a flag that signifies the values of its nation and its history. • Carolina: A palmetto and an oak tree on a red field, with the Union Jack in the upper left quarter. Following the Great American War, the Kingdom of Carolina drops the oak tree and replaces the Union Jack with a yellow star in a red circle on a blue field.
      • Cygnia (South-East Australia): A St Georges Cross on blue, with a red bordered yellow inset with two black swans and the Southern Cross.

    • The People's Kingdom of Great Britain replaces the Union Jack with the "Asterisk of Liberty", a version of the Union Jack where the St George's cross and St Andrew's cross are both purple, on a white field. The reformed Kingdom of the Britons has the asterisk in the centre of the Union Jack, then the Kingdom of England drops it in the wake of the Pandoric War. This also sees an independent Scotland, which keeps the Union Jack but puts the St Andrew's cross over the St George's.
    • The various Jacobin Republics of the 18th century favoured turning the existing flag upside down and recolouring it black and red. The Republic of Portugal is the only country where this iconography survives.
    • The Societist Combine has a black flag with the Threefold Eye (an equalateral triangle with each side extending slightly, and a dot in the middle), despite the fact national symbols are exactly what Societism is supposed to be against.

  • Battle for Dream Island: The flag of the fictional land of Yoyleland is a purple, yellow, and blue flag with a big white Y in the middle. The purple represents the purple grass and the Yoyleberries grown there, the yellow is for the yellow sky, and the blue could possibly stand for the blue water running through Yoyle City up towards Yoyle Mountain.
  • CGP Grey: Grey creates some redesigns for some of the worst state flags in "Grey Grades the State Flags". His redesign for Wisconsin, which looks like a slice of cheese on a blue background, previously appeared in his video about the flag of Antarctica.
  • Dream SMP: Several of the factions have flags of their own, but the most famous of them is the flag of L'Manburg designed by its founder's content creator counterpart, Wilbur Soot. It consists of three horizontal stripes in blue, white, and red, and a black semicircle with yellow accents on its left side to symbolize the walls surrounding the nation in its early days, along with three crosses from the flag of Amsterdam in honour of fellow content creator and L'Manburg founding member Fundy, who is Dutch in real life. An official simplified version of the flag is used for its Minecraft banner design, which are used as decorations throughout the nation in Season 2.
    Some info on my design:
L'Manburg is a country forged in the blood of revolution! Therefore I wanted to incorporate elements of the French tricolour (borrowing the darker shades of blue and red)
L'Manburg is predominately European and, during its formation, included almost every European player on the server, so this influenced my design a lot.
The three crosses symbolise our Dutch citizen and are directly referencing the flag of Amsterdam
The blue stands for liberty, the white stands for peace, and the red (the foundation and underlying colour of the flag) stands for the blood the country is built on.
The yellow and black accentation denote the walls of the nation (A huge black and yellow rampart)
  • Flagsession: The channel has had multiple flag redesign competitions where people can create their own flag designs to compete.
  • Homestar Runner: The flag for the country of Strong Badia — really just a barren patch of dirt behind a fence — consists of white for said fence, brown for said dirt, and red for Strong Bad himself. Its coat of arms is a tire (one of Strong Badia's few "residents"), housing a snake holding a big knife for in-universe Rule of Cool.
  • Kickassia: The Flag of Kickassia is just a hand-drawn sketch based on Rule Of Cool — an angry, cigar-smoking, muscly-armed ice-cream cone holding two guns.
  • Minilife TV takes place on a fictional planet called Legondo, which is split into six different regions, and most of the series takes place in the city of Minilife in the Kaliwit Region. Its national flag, as seen in the series' LEGO World Builder page, features a red and blue flag with yellow stars on each side and a yellow half-sun/half-moon with a yellow classic LEGO dragon's head in the center of it.
  • SMPEarth: Nearly all of the nations have their own corresponding flag. The most well known is that of the Antarctic Empire, which is a blue flag with a lighter blue stripe down the middle, and a blue-and-white globe with sun-like rays coming off of it.

  • Reddit: The subreddit r/vexillology and its parody equivalent r/vexillologycirclejerk focus on the discussion of and the creation of flags. Users often create original flags, including those of Alternate History countries, Fictional Countries, or redesigns of current flags.
  • 4chan: Around 2015/16, internet shitlords declared a fictional Republic of Kekistan and adopted a deliberately inflammatory flag based on the Nazi German war flag. The swastika was replaced with "Kek", the iron cross with the 4Chan logo, and the red became green in reference to the Pepe the frog meme.

    Western Animation
  • The Amazing Adrenalini Brothers: The titular brothers hail from the fictional country of Réndøosîa. The flag of that country is shown to have four colours: red on the left, yellow in the middle, and blue on the right, all with a thick white horizontal line going through them... and a massive hole blown through the center.
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Four Nations each have their own specific flag or emblem that are displayed throughout their cities and, in the case of the Air Nomads, temples. Each flag is a symbol of the element representing the nation.
    • The Fire Nation flag is a red flame on a black field.
    • The Water Tribe flag is a white circle with waves going through it, on a blue field.
    • The Earth Kingdom flag is a golden hexagon, which resembles the currency used in the region, on a green field.
    • The Air Nomads flag depicts three grey swirling vortexes of air in a triangular orientation with a white field.
  • Family Guy: In "E. Peterbus Unum", after learning that his property isn't technically part of the United States, Peter declares it his own country and raises its flag, a white banner with the words "PETORIA" along with a crude drawing of his face.
Peter: I was gonna call it Peterland, but that gay bar down by the airport already took it.
  • Futurama has at least two fictional flags; the "Earth Flag", which resembles the flag of the United States with an image of planet Earth in the canton, and the "Decapodian Flag", which has an image of a hammer being held in a lobster claw.
  • Grojband: In "For Hat and Country", the country of Grojland has a flag with an intricate flame-spewing dragon design holding a guitar, bass, keyboard, and drumsticks with Grojband's logo in the centre.
  • My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: Equestria is occasionally shown as using a flag depicting its two Winged Unicorn rulers flying around a sun-and-moon symbol against a light blue background. • French Canada is independent and instead of using the flag of Quebec, it uses the same design as the Canadian flag but the left stripe is colored blue to resemble the French flag.
  • The Patrick Star Show: In "Klopnodian Heritage Festival", the "flag" of Klopnod is a tablecloth with a mustard stain on it. Squidina points this out, but pretends it's a flag to go along with the traditions she has to do.
  • Pingu: At the beginning of "Jealousy", we see that Pingu's igloo has a flag on top that resembles the Dominican Republic flag, albeit with a penguin in the center.
  • The Simpsons: Springfield's unknown state has a generic tricolor with the ironic statement "Not just another state".
  • South Park: The eponymous semi-fictional Colorado town has its own flag, which plays a major role in the episode "Chef Goes Nanners." It depicts four white people lynching a black person, sparking outrage as Chef finds it racist, but most of the town doesn't seem to notice that it's anything unusual. The flag is eventually updated to a design where people of all colors hold hands... while lynching a black person.
  • In Superman: The Animated Series and later in Justice League, there's the Eastern European country of Kaznia. The flag is black and red with triangles designs and a black star. See it here.
  • Thomas & Friends: The Great Race shows the flag of Sodor, which is blue, has two golden stripes, and a big white stripe in the middle.
  • Young Justice features Qurac, with a green-and-white design (likely to mimic the Islam-symbolizing green on many middle-eastern states' flags), and Bialya, with a black-and-yellow design (based on its bee motif).
