"The #1 exciting shoujo manga magazine!" Featuring Momoko "Maruko" Sakura, Sana Kurata, Miki Koishikawa, Mikako Koda and more!

When you think of Shōjo manga, you think of one of a few names: Nakayoshi, Hana to Yume, LaLa, Ciao, Margaret, or this one called Ribon.

Ribon (りぼん, a misspelling of the word "Ribbon") is a monthly shoujo magazine that was established in 1955 and is still ongoing to this day. It is one of Japan's three major shoujo manga magazines alongside Nakayoshi (published by Kodansha) and Ciao (published by Shogakukan), and the second oldest of which, only being surpassed in age by Nakayoshi. The stories are then published into separate books and released around the 15th of every month under the label "Ribon Mascot Comics". It has become one of the most successful shoujo magazines in Japan, establishing many classic series and entries in the Magical Girl and Romantic Comedy genres, many of which have become popular franchises in their own right.

While Nakayoshi was generally held to the same standard as Shonen Jump for showcasing its magical girl output and its anime adaptations going toe-to-toe with Shonen Jump by giving the world some of the most well-known of both categories, Ribon is, in reality, Shonen Jump's true shoujo equivalent, as both alongside fellow shoujo magazine Margaret are owned by Shueisha. To many, it's certainly not as obvious, as many of Ribon's classics have flown under the radar outside of Japan.

The magazine was at its prime during the late 80s and early 2000s, reaching its peak between 1991 and 1994. The magazine has also had its share of spinoff titles, but all of them have since been retired, with the last and longest-running, Ribon Original, first published in 1981 and giving way in 2006. Several series would later find sequels, spinoffs, or would take part in a Shared Universe in Shueisha's josei magazines Cookie and Cocohana.

Ongoing Series:

  • Chibi Maruko-chan (1986) (The magazine's signature series, being both its best-selling and its longest-running, later spawning an equally long-running anime series. While the series stopped regular production in 1996, it was later revived in 2002 and has had an irregular release schedule since. Became the winner of the 13th Kodansha Manga Award's shojo category.)
