Yuu Nagami, a high school student aiming to become a Light Novel author, has a little sister named Suzuka. Suzuka is an excellent student with good grades and great looks, but she's very cold toward her older brother. Every year Yuu keeps failing at the preliminary rounds of the light novel contest, but one day Suzuka reveals a shocking truth. The flirty sibling romantic comedy that Suzuka wrote has won the light novel contest! To make matters worse, Suzuka doesn't understand anything about light novels or moe so she begs Yuu to stand in for her under her pen-name, Towano Chikai!

My Sister, My Writer (original title: Ore ga Suki nano wa Imōto dakedo Imōto ja nai, translating as "The One I Love is My Little Sister But She's Not a Little Sister") is a comedy light novel series written by Seiji Ebisu and illustrated by Gintarou, which was published from 2016 to 2020 with 11 volumes. An anime adaptation premiered on October 10, 2018 and aired for 10 episodes.

General Tropes:

  • The Ace: Not only is Suzuka the student council president of her school and excellent in sports and other chores, she wrote an award winning Light Novel relatively easily.
  • A-Cup Angst: Suzuka develops one soon enough when she sees the bust sizes of Mai and Double Peace.
  • All Women Are Lustful: Yuu finds himself surrounded by surprisingly perverted women, with Suzuka and her un-sibling like thoughts, Mai and her stalking issues, Double Peace making very explicit images for work, and Reika has no shame whatsoever when interacting with Yuu.
  • Always Someone Better: Yuu is surpassed by everything in his sister, and at first he hopes that by writing his Light Novel, he will manage to surpass his sister in something, only for the sister to surpass him in it too.
  • Animal Motifs: Suzuka is cat themed. She randomly says "nya" or "nyu" when she is flushed, as shown in the light novel and episode 2 of the anime
  • Big Brother Attraction: Suzuka hides some very un-sibling like feelings for Yuu, which he never picks up on. In Volume 2, she literally turns into an idiot when Yuu gave her a kiss on the forehead, and it lasts nearly the rest of the volume.
  • Casting Gag: This isn't the first time Chinatsu Akasaki voices a busty, blonde woman who uses Gratuitous English.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Suzuka doesn't like it when other girls hang out around Yuu. Even if their interactions with him are completely non-romantic in nature, such as Ahegao Double Peace simply being the illustrator for the light novel, she always gets jealous and suspicious of them.
  • Covert Pervert:
    • Beneath her initially aloof and proper demeanor, Suzuka has very some very, interesting, thoughts towards Yuu.
    • Mai Himuro also has some serious imagination when interacting with Yuu.
  • Curtains Match the Windows: Yuu and Suzuka both have purple hair and purple eyes.
  • Education Papa: Apparently the Nagami siblings' father is very strict and wouldn't approve his daughter writing a Light novel.
  • First-Name Basis: While he tries to address her by last name instead, Yuu ends up calling Mai by her first name at her insistence.
  • Freudian Excuse: Several of Suzuka's "confessions" are interpreted by Yuu in this manner, since he thinks she's just saying it for research for her light novel. When Ahegao Double Peace asks them to do some S&M roleplay for some illustration ideas, Suzuka uses this opportunity to lash out physically and verbally at her brother, whipping the floor around him while also angrily chastising him for hanging around so many other women and ignoring her advances. Once again he thinks she's just getting into character for her light novel.
  • Intimate Lotion Application: During the Beach Episode, Ahegao W Peace Sensei approaches Yuu and offers to have him rub sunscreen on his back, with the excuse he has to "gather data on a stable fanservice scene". But the other girls get jealous and demand he do it with all of them, which we see via a montage. He's at his most awkward when he has to do it in his sister though, especially since Ahegao W Peace Sensei starts making an obscene narration out of it.
  • The Knights Who Say "Squee!": Mai Himuro, a recognized light novel author in her own right, finds herself incredibly impressed by Towano Chikai's novel and becomes Yuu's biggest fan.
  • Little Sister Heroine: The entire premise is themed around this trope; Suzuka herself is in love with her older brother Yuu, and the light novel she writes that becomes an overnight success is about this kind of heroine. The trope itself is discussed more than once.
  • Most Writers Are Writers: It's a light novel series where several characters are light novel writers, including the main character himself.
  • Oblivious to Love: Yuu fails to notice the romantic advances and even some confessions to him by the other women, including several from Suzuka.
  • Older Than They Look: Esaka must be older than Yuu, but she's much shorter and looks like a kid.
  • Pen Name: Suzuka asks Yuu to stand in for her under her pen name Towano Chikai. Mai goes by the pen name of Homura Enryuu. The viewers don't know the real name of Ahegao W Peace.
  • Production Throwback: An excited bookstore clerk in Episode 2 bears strong resemblance to Shinpei of My First Girlfriend Is a Gal. Both shows are produced by the same studio.
  • Shout-Out: The dream sequence in the first episode of the anime is an extended reference to Sister Princess.
  • Stalker with a Crush: Although she denies being a stalker, Mai follows Yuu to work and tries to find as much as possible about his personal life when they first interact.
  • Take Our Word for It: Suzuka is supposedly a brilliant writer and everyone else gushes over how entertaining her "flirty sibling rom-com" light novel series is, but it isn't shown what makes it so great since the contents of the novels are never actually seen in full. The few glimpses of her writing we do get are rather generic snippets of dialogue.
  • Thanks for the Mammary: Reika literally lets Yuu grab her boob so he can get inspired for his next story. Ahegao W Peace Sensei puts Yuu's hand between her breasts instead.
  • Unknown Rival: Yuu started writing his light novel hoping to beat his sister Suzuka in at least one thing, his sister was not aware of the rivalry, and yet she has no problem beating him in that.
  • World of Technicolor Hair: Most characters have realistic hair colors, but Yuu and Suzuka have purple hair while Mai has bright red hair. No special attention is drawn to this.
