Heartwarming / Little Misfortune

Go To

Despite Misfortune's horrible home life and all of the terrible things she encounters on her journey for Eternal Happiness, the way she does see things in an optimistic light is somewhat comforting.

  • When Mr. Voice tells her she can get the gift of "Eternal Happiness", Misfortune immediately wants to win it for her mother.
    • The ending shows that Misfortune will forever love her mother... even if her mother will be happier with her gone, and all the implications of that.
  • Misfortune's crush on Benjamin. Although this could go into Squick territory for many as Benjamin is a fox and Misfortune too young to know real romance, it's sweet to see Misfortune happy to see someone. It also doesn't hurt that Benjamin is pretty much harmless to Misfortune and is only trying to warn her about Mr. Voice and to stay away from him.
  • Before the reveal of who Mr. Voice is and what he's really doing to Misfortune, a lot of his interactions with her are of him telling her how clever she is, playing along with some of her childish antics, and showing concern for her and her situation. It's sad and all part of his lie, but he treats her more like a parent than her actual parents do.
    • If Misfortune says yes when Mr. Voice asks if she believes in magic, she says it's magical that when her parents argue, she can hide in her bedroom and imagine her mother and father as the loving parents she wishes she had. She asks Mr. Voice if he agrees that's magical, and he replies, "yes it is, my sweet child."
    • Towards the second half of the game Mr. Voice seems to genuinely grow fond of Misfortune, even showing concern and warmth for her when she's not within earshot.
Mr. Voice: Hey you, from the other side ... Misfortune deserves to have a fun time, so try to make the right choices for her, alright?
  • While Morgo did manage to make several victims dissapear to parts unknown, Benjamin’s diary shows that he managed to save at least 2-3 would-be victimsnote  from whatever fate befell the others before saving Misfortune herself.
    • In Benjamin's diary, he notes that Misfortune's "code" (which is actually just her first name) is a nice code.
  • Near the end when Mr. Voice isn't around, Misfortune gets to pet a baby deer—and it doesn't die or run away for once.
  • Upon her learning that she was dead all along, Benjamin appears and gives her a hug. After everything she experienced throughout the game, someone finally shows her genuine compassion.
  • At the very end, Misfortune gets to meet Benjamin's boss while crossing over to the other side. Although a creepy skeleton specter, she speaks gently to the child and calls her "Lady" Misfortune, telling her that they were expecting her. Misfortune enters the "somewhere else" with her and can be heard asking in awe "What is this place?" The implication is that she's at least going to a better place than she was when she was alive.
    • During this same scene, Misfortune also gets to reunite with the puppy from early on in the game... since the puppy is also dead.
