In the Welsh-language version, Matthias can come across as being less fluent in Welsh than his colleagues — and in the bilingual version he uses the English language more than the others do. This has both a
Doylist and a Watsonian explanation. Within the show, Matthias is a Welshman who has spent a significant part of his career in London, where he would have had little or no opportunity to speak Welsh. On a meta level, Richard Harrington, the actor who plays Matthias, is Welsh but comes from an English-speaking family (as, to be fair, do roughly five-sixths of Welsh people).
