Chaotic Neutral

  • Recommended by: Zoriax 91
  • Comments: A very, very anti-imprint writer, who posts his fics on TwilightSucks. All of his stories are basically a deconstruction of the Twilight series, taking its plot points and guiding them into terrible consequences. Among the most heart-wrenching ones, we have What They Left Behind (TRIGGER WARNING: child abandonment), and Nihil Desidera, both of which star the poster child for everything that is wrong with imprint, Leah Clearwater.
    • Unfortunately, both of those stories, as well as most of his body of work, appear to have been deleted
    • The proboards forum may have removed them, but the author has started posting them again on Archive Of Our Own.

asdfqwert

  • Recommended by: Lady Lurker, Peteman, Mycomp
  • Comments: Anti-Twilight writer of considerable talent, all one-shots thus far. Deals with the darker themes of the series. Stories include Seven, Eighteen, Chagrin, Imprisoned, He Was A Quiet Man, and the most recent Daughter.
    • Eighteen seconded by Peteman. While Seven is definitely worth a look, Eighteen I find is even better, especially given Renesmee's rather eloquent internal monologue about child grooming and just what she thinks of Jacob regarding it.
    • Just throwing in a trigger warning for Seven. As stated above, it's dark stuff.
    • Doctor U. N. Owen would like to point out that Seven has over 130 reviews. And it's a one-shot.
    • The Revanchist would also like to point out that Chagrin is actually a parody. Bloody brilliant one, too. It currently has 212 reviews.
    • Lady Lurker would like to add that He Was A Quiet Man is her favourite. Estora beautifully reveals the strained relationship between Bella and Charlie from Charlie's POV, and really makes the reader thing about how poorly he was treated in the books. That story almost moved this troper to tears.
    • Little Miss Sophie truly felt afraid for Nessie in 'Seven', and loved her in 'Eighteen'. Yes. As an Anti, this troper would like to say that she wanted to take Nessie away from all the madness of her twisted, twisted family.
    • Kereea would like to point out that Daughter should not be missed either. Rene's new husband is exceptionally critical of Bella, sort of showing what an "average outsider" would think of her, and the entire work is clearly painting Bella as a sociopath...at best.
    • This troper bemoans the fact that the author has pulled almost all her fanfiction down and is no longer providing links. There's only He was a quiet man left. If someone finds links for the rest of them, please be so kind as to update this section.
      • Links now updated with Wayback Machine versions.

HM Grayson

  • Recommended by: Sarah1281
  • Comments: Probably the best Jacob/Leah writer I've ever read but the stories aren't just about the romance. Several of them aren't even from the point of view of the couple and all of them deal with some of the glossed-over issues of imprinting, particularly on an infant. She Hates Me, for instance, in an epic dealing with Renesme's life from seven to seventeen (or four to seven as the case may be) and "Nessie figuring some human truths. Growing up is not easy. People are complex. We all make mistakes. And it really sucks when his best friend is a girl."

  • Comments: The best Volturi writer I've ever read. The vocabulary she puts into her stories are just incredible and her writing style keeps you reading for more. Her fics tend to prove that the Volturi wives aren't just Strangled by the Red String and have a real romance which is hidden within the walls (A Thousand Stairs). She also wrote two angsty AU's for Breaking Dawn (A Fractured Sort of Forever and Finitum) which left me wondering which ending was the real one.

  • Comments: AU, mostly. Good enough that if the names of the characters were changed, it would be worth publishing. Actually, she's realized this and has been rewriting many of her stories and shopping them to a publisher. I don't think that Girls Just Wanna Have Fun is on the list of those that are to be remade with non-Twilight characters, though, so you should definitely check that one out—it's really good.

Minisinoo

  • Recommended by: re_weird
  • Comments: Minisinoo has stated that she is a professional writer and it shows. She takes the canon material and transforms into works of beauty such as the pre-canon fics, Beauty, Shining in Company with the Celestial Forms and This is My Beloved Son, in Whom I Am Well Pleased. Her two other fics are both subversions of the canon material done in the best way: Amputated at the Neck and my personal favorite Cowboys and Indians.
    • brittanyw here to second the rec of Cowboys and Indians. It's thoughtful, well-told, very different from the norm in the Twilight fandom, and frankly in any fandom, and features the best of odd friendships (Jasper and Leah). It makes those otherwise flat characters into fully formed people.
      • Agreed. I read and liked Cowboys and Indians a lot. However, the link appears to be broken, as far as I can tell.

     General Fics
Stories focused on the family and the friendly relationships of the cast. Plot-focused stories or light day-in-the-life stories. Pretty much anything that isn't focused on romance.

AB Type by Kingfishers

  • Status: Dead
  • Sypnosis: The Greatest Story Ever Told, by the Greatest Historian of the World. Aro has lived, figuratively speaking, for three thousand years. Have you ever wondered what he has seen and done?
  • Comments: Written before we were introduced to more on the Volturi, such as Didyme's story, Sulpicia, etc. That said, it manages to perfectly capture Aro's voice and character, and it's just damn awesome writing.

Ad Finem by lamelessness

  • Recommended by: ThisIsAUser
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A dark and interesting take on the inner workings of the Volturi and the misogynistic ideas the brothers posses due to their age. Takes place twenty-five years after the events of Breaking Dawm and follows the story of Demi, a young girl visiting Volterra who looks like Marcus' deceased wife and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Part one of series with more to come.

The Art of Self Deception by Silver Pard

  • Recommended by: Aramisa, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Bella reflects about her ultimate choice of becoming a vampire.
  • Comments: As someone who is not much of a Twilight fan, I found this fic to be brilliant. It's not only a fic about Bella, but a take on what Bella's choice really means in terms on gains and lost in one humanity without being poignant.

Awakening by jazsqr

  • Recommended by: Fanfictionlurker1
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Humanity awoke too late to find that their nightmares were very real. In the desperate fight for survival, Captain Isabella Swan has more reason than most to hate the vampire invaders. But can a certain bronze-haired vampire change her view?
  • Pairings: Canon
  • Tags: Alternate Universe Fic
  • Comments: Great take on the war between humans and vampires. It's rather fast-paced (but not too fast-paced), has multiple perspectives, and it's exciting. Even though the story is incomplete, it's still a pleasing blend of fantasy, sci-fi, war, and drama.

Bella Hale by JulesSC

  • Recommended by: Nerdman3000
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: Six year old Isabella Swan was orphaned after a car crash took her parents away, and Edward and the Cullens find her. Alice decides to keep her, and Edward tries to protect her. Family drama and hilarity ensues as Bella grows up and ExB happens.
  • Tags: Alternate Universe Fic
  • Comments: A funny family story that shows a human girl being raised by a family of vampires. You don't even have to be a Twilight fan to enjoy this, and Bella is potrayed much better than she is in the books.

Bree Cullen, My Daughter by Aeshna Lacrymosa

  • Recommended by: jusk8lp
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: It was almost Renesmee's first birthday when Bree leaves the Cullen house without warning. Carlisle, who managed to save Bree from the Volturi, now leads the search for her. They must find her before Alice's terrible vision comes true. (Carlisle's POV)
  • Comments: Aeshna Lacrymosa's take on the “Bree-gets-adopted-by-the-Cullens” scenario explores the character of Carlisle in his fierce paternal devotion as well as the “lore” on Children of the Moon, although the story never shows Twilight’s “true” werewolves in action. Still, the plot moves through characters’ emotions and motivations, particularly Carlisle’s. The ending is heartbreaking, but with pleasant surprises at the last minute.

The Cold War by Gleena

  • Recommended by: Fanfictionlurker1

  • Synopsis: In 2026, the Cullens realize that Aro desperately wants to possess Edward in order to use him in a barbaric experiment. Now, the Cullens must evade the Volturi while protecting one of their own as well as Aro's unwitting human pawn. 100% Canon.

But Leah is no doormat. She will not allow this continue any longer. It's her life, not theirs, and she is damn well going to let them know it.
  • Comments: Addresses many of the things that happen to Leah in the Twilight novels. Very satisfying, and in the same vein as Freedom Triumphs.

Didyme's Ashes by Shahzadi

  • Recommended by: Inkblot
  • Status: Compelte
  • Synopsis: Aro of the Volturi chose his greedy ambitions over the love for his sister, Didyme—a decision that killed her. An account of the night of Didyme's murder.
  • Comments: Possibly the best retelling of Didyme's story out there.

Freedom Triumphs by HornLove

  • Recommended by: Kereea
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Leah confronts Emily on the flaws of Imprinting. Emily POV.
  • Comments: A story for the Leah-lovers, the Imprinting-haters, and all the feminists who felt offended by Twilight. Leah's criticisms of Emily sound like any that could have been leveled at Bella. It also looks at how Imprinting might affect the Imprint-ee. Specifically in how almost every retort of Emily's is the same thing: "Sam loves me.

Full Moon by Alydia Rackham

  • Recommended by: Sarah1281, Lemia, LotusQuill
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Jacob said: "I was the natural path your life would have taken…If the world was the way it was supposed to be." Is that true?
  • Pairing: Jacob/Bella
  • Tags: Alternate Universe Fic
  • Comments: Bella moves to Forks a semester before she does in the books and before Edward arrives so she gets a chance to get to know Jacob first. There was just so many times while reading this story that one of the things in the book that drove me crazy is completely subverted and the characters make intelligent choices. What's more, Bella? She actually cares about non-mythological creatures!
    • Lemia: Seconded. What really sold this fic for me was how it didn't bash Edward and the rest of the Cullens but put in the effort to make them well-rounded and likable characters too so it felt less like a generic "Twilight sucks and we're going to bash it all over the place" fic and more like a fully developed story in its own right that not only gives Bella a likable personality and a believable romance with Jacob but also creates just as fully formed and heartwarming relationships between them and the Cullens. Highly recommended.
    • LotusQuill: Thirded. This fic made me stop my infinite lurker status and review. In canon, I mourned the authorial mistreatment of Jacob (and everyone) but this writer fleshed them out wonderfully and I appreciated the character interactions and relationships. I give my full recommendations for this story.

going nowhere, going somewhere by Estora

  • Recommended by: Ryan Lohner
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Post-series, the Cullens decide to attend college, and Edward is stuck with the human roommate Caden Mills, an emotional pop culture junkie. Though initially dismissive and uncomfortable with the arrangement, Edward slowly takes more of an interest in Caden, and the entire 21st century.
  • Tags: Continuation Fic
  • Comments: Not slash, whatever that synopsis may indicate. Rather, it's an attempt to actually give Edward a personality, and though written by someone who hates the series (before this, Estora specialized in sad and disturbing one-shots about the Unfortunate Implications of the books) Edward is written as quite likable in his Defrosting Ice Queen phase. Also, Caden himself is not written poorly, which was my biggest fear going into this.

The Golden Mean by ophelietta

  • Recommended by: cellardoor
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Bella walks down yet another road not taken.
  • Notes: Has a companion piece, Seven Years.
  • Comments: ophelietta writes a lot of good gen and Jacob/Bella fic, and I think this is one of her best. It really shows Bella growing as a character and making choices as an adult.

Growing Up Cullen by welurklate and balkarin

  • Recommended by: Victoria Writes
  • Status: Deleted, but preserved in its entirety here
  • Synopsis: welurklate and balkarin discuss what it would have been like to live with Edward before Bella.
  • Comments: Crack. So much crack. Makes fun of the series, especially Edward, although one of the installments takes a few shots at Jacob and Renesmee. More of a parody than anything else.

Huilen's Story by persephonesfolly

  • Recommended by: Kizuna Tallis
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Remember Huilen and Nahuel (the other Human-Vampire hybrid encountered late into Breaking Dawn)? This is their story.
  • Comments: Very well written. Huilen's emotions and feelings during her journey (her initial resentment of Nahuel to ultimately coming to care for him especially) are very strong and leap off the page. Sure, she does come off as a bit mean at times, but considering her circumstances it's hard to blame her, plus the story ends on an ultimately hopeful note.

Lions Eat Lambs by Raggdolly

  • Recommended by: Fanfictionlurker1
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A camping expedition goes awry when Bella's friends disappear. While searching for them, she stumbles upon the manor of Edward Cullen, unaware that she is about to become a pawn in his dangerous game - a game she can't afford to lose.
  • Tags: Alternate Universe Fic, Dark Fic
  • Comment: It's a traditional horror story, plain and simple. Author uses many classical horror tropes, and uses them with considerable skill. Recommended for those in the mood for suspense and gore.

Little Red Riding Hood and the Red Eyed Wolf by Ximei

  • Recommended by: Ivodora
  • Status: Complete
  • Sypnosis: Takes place after the events of Breaking Dawn. Little Renesmee is out in the woods hunting when she meets her wolf. One-shot.
  • Comments: A chilling story detailing an accidental encounter between Alec of the Volturi and Renesmee. I found both character portrayals to be spot-on, especially Alec, who is like I always imagined him to be. None of the two are really what they seem.

Living In Meyer' by Bookworm-xxx

  • Recommended by: SideshowJazz1
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: When Ashley opens her door up into Bella Swan's bedroom the last thing she expects is to get trapped in Bella's fictional world. How will she get home and more importantly, what will she do when in Bella's absence the story starts to go wrong?
  • Comments: Modelled after "Lost In Austen", a miniseries where a Pride and Prejudice fan ended up in their world, while Elizabeth Bennet lived in the real world. In this version, Ashley, likewise, ends up in the world of The Twilight Saga after Bella accidentally shuts the door of the world on her while they're each in the wrong world. The story is engaging because it explores what makes up the reality of both worlds, and explores the characters differently from how they are explored. It also helps that Ashley is lively and engaging, and seeing the world through her eyes makes it just as engaging as the original book.

Luminosity by Alicorn

  • Recommended by: Ronfar, Felicity Springs, Red Wren, Yularula, Dame-Amaryllis, Robinton
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: In the spirit of Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, a very different Bella Swan moves into Forks, and discovers there's something strange about a certain family...
  • Pairing: Bella/Edward
  • Tags: Alternate Universe Fic
  • Comments: It's much more subdued than Methods of Rationality, because the world (as opposed to the characters) of the Twilight series isn't as easy to mock as the Harry Potter universe is, but it's still a nice example of "doing rationality to" a book series with, shall we say, "issues".
    • Seconded by Felicity Springs. This troper can't stand the Twilight canon without a Rifftrax and found this fic enjoyable, to the point that it's made her more sympathetic to canon than she wants to be.
    • Thirded by Red Wren, who would like to point out it has its own page now.
    • Fourthed by Yularula, this fic is really excellent, and really develops the world to a much more interesting point..
    • Very much recommended. The natural conclusion is that Luminosity/Radiance is actually the original work, and Twilight is bad fanfiction that just happened to be published first.
    • The fic is compelling but loses appeal the further you get along in the story. I personally found this version of Bella just as irritating as canon, particularly more away from interacting with the Cullens.

Mary Blake by be_themoon

  • Recommended by: Verity, Silvertail
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Renesmee grows up, gets out, and finds herself.
  • Notes: A story in four parts: Going South, And All Her Yesterdays, The One Unchanging Thing Is I, and Between one June and another September.
  • Tags: Continuation Fic
  • Comments: It's a series of sort of slice-of-life drabbley stories that really make Renesmee—or as she reinvents herself, Mary Blake—into a real, interesting, and credible character who wants to experience the world more richly.
    • Seconded by Silvertail. These metafics are very ethereal and thought-provoking. Also, it expresses many facts that people dislike about the Twilight Saga.

Moments of Aftermath by NintendoGal55

  • Recommended by: Eona
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Nearly a week after the infamous Cullen-Black wedding, Rosalie only too happily tears into Bella and Edward, with Esme soon stepping in, and not in the way they would expect.
  • Comments: A sequel of sorts to The Wedding Crashers by DasMervin. Definitely for Antis.
    • Follows The Wedding Crashers perfectly by reiterating the arguments through people Bella and Edward typically consider to be on their side and adding new ones as well. Of particular not is the lovely moment when Esme points out to Bella that vampires don't stay hidden just because it makes them seem mysterious, they do have good reasons for hiding from humanity. Also a great fic for anyone who finds canon!Esme to be too much of a doormat.

More Than One by BabelFish42

  • Recommended by: millernumber1
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: For Alice, some things in life are straightforward. Like not wearing white after Labor Day. But not all questions have simple answers. Why was she really avoiding Bella during her pregnancy? And how exactly do you define a family?
  • Comments: A lovely little two-shot dealing with Alice's relationships with Bella, Rosalie, and Esme during the second third of Breaking Dawn. Painful but luminous, and adds in little character details which fit perfectly into canon.

The Most Popular Book in the Whole World by Jessica Wagstrom

  • Recommended by: Kaza999
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A parody of the entire Twilight series. We follow the adventures of Friggin' Gorgeous, called Frig, and her space alien boyfriend Xlormp. It really must be read to be believed.
  • Comments: Probably not a story for diehard fans, The Most Popular Book in the Whole World is extremely funny, mocking the writing style of the original books while keeping its own distinct flavor. Even though the other books in the series (The Most Second Book in the Whole Series, Only Slightly Better Than the Last Book, and The Most Incredible Work of Literature in the Entire Cosmos) fall prey to some slight Cerebus Syndrome, they remain funny, the plots remain...unusual and the characters remain likable. Though a good read, it's pretty long.

moves in mysterious ways by Lisse

  • Recommended by: Suspicious Cookie, Rook Encounte, Dame-Amaryllis
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Sometimes the prey evolves, or at least learns how to issue restraining orders.
  • Comments: This fic is moving, poignant and beautifully written. The ending was like being punched hard in the chest in the best way possible. It takes everything about the original book and turns it around in the most beautiful way.
    • Seconded. Very, very well written and have a very different take on the canon without changing it. Wonderful characterization, too.
    • Wow, great and amazing! This story makes sense and is one of the most interesting entries in to vampire literature ever. Just read it. Even if you (like me) have read little or no of the series, read it.
    • Absolutely everything the original should have been, if it had been written by someone halfway competent. This story is beautiful, poignant, emotional, and heartbreaking while never sacrificing the strange inhumanity and creepiness of vampires.

The Not So Short Second Life of Bree Tanner by Oy Angelina

  • Recommended by: Racheakt, Halinmonk, Ximei, Reason
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: An alternate take on what could have been if Eclipse ended a little differently for Bree Tanner and what she might have done with her new lease on life. Features the Cullens, the Volturi, the La Push Pack and many other favorites from the Twilight Saga.
  • Pairing: Bree/Alec
  • Comments: A great look at Twilight, from a fresh perspective, particularly if you're a die-hard shipper of the Edward/Jacob/Bella wars who just wants some peace and quiet. (Edward/Bella is mentioned only briefly, before the story leaves it largely in the dust.)
    • Halinmonk: Agreed, there is some Narm here and there but it clears up fast and if you can enjoy the Tear Jerkers and Heartwarming Moments, then there is a lot of awesome to go around. In my personal opinion: Made of Win.
    • Reason: Your Mileage May Vary, since the grammar certainly leaves something to be desired, but if you don't mind editing it in your head, the actual content is good.

The Peaceable Kingdom by orange_crushed

A Study in Venom by Ximei

  • Recommended by: Ivodora
  • Status: Dormant; last updated March 2019
  • Sypnosis: A simple request from an odd visitor sends the Volturi clashing against an enemy that might be more dangerous than anyone, human or vampire, had ever thought possible. A study on the tragedy of immortality and the beauty of undying love. Now with a TvTropes page.
  • Comments: An incredibly detailed story which takes turns exploring and fleshing out the members of the Volturi, especially Jane, Alec, Corin and Felix, but also giving minor characters such as the Volturi wives a breath of life. The storyline itself combines these character case studies with an intriguing plot featuring a rival coven and a possible conspiracy. It has its share of humor and wit, a little bit of sadness and philosophy and extensive thoughts about the condition of immortal beings.

The Twilight Mary Sue Alphabet by Dreaming Maya

Twilight the Rewrite by Tprinces

  • Recommended by: Yon Troper
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A rewrite of Twilight, fixing some sequencing, logic and writing issues.
  • Comments: An excellent rewrite for people who didn't like the original book. Very well-written and actually quite tense and exciting at parts, and the more glaring Plot Holes, pacing issues and bad tendencies are fixed. The author's also done a re-written version of New Moon and is working on a new version of Eclipse.
    • I read the first 15 chapters or so... I must say that while it is a good vampire story... I feel that it isn't a proper re-write, change the characters' names and you wouldn't even outright connect with Twilight and IMHO it makes it is a poor rewrite, even if it is a good story.
    • IMHO, this is a far better interpretation of these characters than Meyer could pull off herself. In the canon material, everyone is basically just a cardboard cutout with superpowers and sparkles tacked on. Of course the rewrite versions of the characters look nothing like the source material - the rewrite versions actually resemble people.

Vampire Assassin by deathnoteuser07

  • Recommended by: gamingNerd, transformerz
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: What the fifth twilight book could be like. The volturi are still upset about "losing" to the Cullens over the Renesmee conflict in Breaking Dawn, so they devise a plan to kill them all.
  • Tags: Continuation Fic
  • Comments: If you were disappointed by the battle that never happened in Breaking Dawn, this is the story for you. YMMV on whether or not it's an alternate universe fic, and a Dark Fic.
    • Pigeonbrain: I can't support this recommendation. I hesitate to say this, but, I'm not sure if the author has even read the book. Either that, or it's a parody. The OC kills Esme effortlessly with a whip, nevermind the supposed stoneskin. Afterwards, they seriously consider that the ninja-assassin might have been a werewolf, even though vampires are supposed to have excellent smell. Carlisle's reaction to the murder of his wife is 'a hint of sadness' in his voice. It does have a certain narm-charm, but as a serious entry, no.

Never On My Mind by deadnow

  • Recommended by: Eona
  • Status: Incomplete
  • Pairing: Bella/Paul
  • Synopsis: 'Forget about it Paul.'The order took hold. It wasn't instant; Paul's natural inclination to fight all orders wouldn't allow it to take hold in a snap. It crept over him instead, stripping away what choice he had as slow as honey. One minute life was all about her. The next, it wasn't. This is a story of how Paul imprinted. Again. Again. And again
  • Comments: This is a truly amazing exploration of Paul's character with a unique take on Bella's relationship with the Cullens. Her behavior in New Moon is partially explained as a physical addiction to the Cullens' presence. The fic is technically incomplete but Bella and Paul get a satisfying resolution regardless.

  • Comments: This fic is basically what the first Twilight novel could have been like if it was focused on suspense, horror, action and violence rather than romance. The plot stays fairly close to the original, with a few interesting twists to fit the new backstories. The fight scenes are well written, the author isn't afraid to show some blood, and the villain (James) plays a much bigger role than he does in canon.

  • Synopsis: One night when Edward is out hunting, Alice drops by Bella’s room to keep her company. Only, things don’t go quite as planned. Bella/Alice
  • Comments: One of the best Twilight fanfics that this troper has ever encountered. The author manages to capture the good parts of the Twilight series and characterization, while leaving the negatives behind. The best part is that the story never rags on the original series, even as it gently points out a better way. Not to mention a romance that is extremely believable and situations that flow seamlessly from the tiny changes that the author created to start the story off. It does contain a rather large amount of...erm...rather vivid imagery, but the overall writing quality more than makes up for it. HIGHLY recommended.

  • Comment: It's a divergence fic that stays extremely faithful to the characters and style of the original, while taking the story in a different direction. Very Original Flavour, therefore it's for fans, not for haters.

  • Pairing: Bella/Victoria
  • Synopsis: Bella's always been a little different. Glowing skin and malfunctioning electrical devices are only a small part of the problem. No, Bella's also attracted a vampire. A vampire who's name doesn't end in 'Cullen'. Victoria/Bella Femslash
  • Tags: Alternate Universe Fic, Les Yay, Femslash
  • Comments: Unconventional take on a fairly rare pairing. What if Victoria never met James? What if she met Bella before the Cullens did? This is the story where Bella falls in love and lives in a relationship with an unapologetic human-drinking vampire, and one of the most interesting aspects is how Victoria defends her lifestyle and never converts. Bella has a different than canon electric power, which brings a twist that Edward is very much capable of reading her mind, and Victoria has some pleasant, very subtle shades of Magnificent Bitch, and has nice chemistry with Bella.

  • Synopsis: After her mother's wedding in Mexico, Bella encounters a vampire with less altruistic motives than the those held by the vampires she might have met in Forks under drastically different circumstances. One bad decision, she discovers, can change her entire life.
  • Comments: Darker and Edgier beginning to the series as Bella learns about vampires when she's abducted and raped by Nahuel's father as part of his new plan to create a race of hybrids. Confronting the darker side of vampirism from the start, this fic explores Bella's emotional turmoil as she simultaneously copes with her transformation and her determination to be a good mother to her son.

  • Synopsis: Edward Masen was changed in 1918 and abandoned by his sire. He feeds on human blood, unaware of any other way…until he stumbles across college freshman Bella Swan for a night that will change everything.
  • Comments: A dark AU with a simple concept, as an Edward who has spent years feeding on human blood is inspired to explore a new way of doing things when he develops an interest in Bella Swan at college, and what started just him enjoying a sexual partner whose thoughts he didn't have to hear leads to him starting to contemplate a new way of doing things at last.

As Bella is thrown into a frightening new world, Edward and Jacob must put aside their differences to save the girl they both love. But will they be too late?
  • Comments: Does a fascinating job of adding the third species of mermaids to the franchise, giving the readers a new species while keeping the basic details of the existing mythology intact (to say nothing of adding in some interesting new characters such as Jacob's new imprint and the niece Rosalie never knew she had).

Seducing Ms. Swan by DQRC

  • Recommended by DMint
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Post-New Moon AU. Bella never jumped, Alice never had her vision and Edward never came back. Six years later, Bella is struggling to make a new life for herself as a teacher in Rochester, New York. How will she fare when a very familiar student crops up in her classroom? Will she be able to remain professional, or will old ties get in the way? Can Ms. Swan be seduced?
  • Comments: Unfortunately, the style resembles that of S. Meyer to a painful degree of topaz and unwarranted angst and the main character cannot manage to think or reason in a convincing manner. She avoids drawing the obvious conclusions simply to further the plot. That, coupled with the author's inability to keep track of which day of the week it is in one paragraph makes for a very frustrating, unsatisfying read.
    • Then why is it being recommended?

  • Tags: Alternate Universe Fic, Character Death.
  • Comments: Suspenseful AU that puts Edward in a position of a Volturi guard, slowly falling in love with a person he's ordered to kill. The story contains a fair amount of vampire violence, so it's not for the squeamish. All major players, the Cullens and the Volturi both, have their parts to play, and the action-packed, dramatic finale doesn't pull it's punches.

  • Comments: AH/AU, OOC, and very much rated R for language and sex (although this is a rare and really good example of sex not driving the story). Borders on darkfic, as both Bella and Edward have serious psychological problems due to their pasts. Features incredibly well-developed characters who react realistically to their individual situations; even though it goes dark at times, it never loses a sense of hope that the protagonists can be stronger by banding together.

    • DOTMW: Can you say amazing? Seconded from someone who disliked the source material immensely. Bella is immediately more likable and she shares much better chemistry with Alice than Edward (though that may be more of a testament to the author's skill). If you thought the romance in Twilight was plodding and boring, this is a huge improvement

  • Comments: A well written take on an Aro/Bella story that doesn't portray the characters differently. Wonderful characterization and a very creative writing style. • Comment: There are some stories out there where Bella or Edward or both – willingly or not – join the Volturi. The transition is surprisingly easy, their relationship doesn't suffer for it at all, there are basically no problems for them to face, and everything turns unbelievably and nauseatingly fluffy. This is not one of those stories. Here, nothing is easy or sweet about being forcefully drafted into a coven of killers with seemingly no way out. Bella and Edward fight (not always successfully) to keep their morals in an environment so full of violence, where they are forced to obey or die. Both of them have to struggle to find a way to adapt to their nightmarish situation.

  • Comments: This story is incredible. The author truly talented, and that's not something I say lightly. I despise Twilight on many different levels, but this story makes it bearable, and I swear to God that Rockstorm writes the characters better than Meyer could ever hope of doing; making them more believable, relatable, and realistic. It goes for gritty realism rather than an idealized love story, and pulls it off perfectly.

  • Comments: A very original but very dark fic, Bella as a ghost is fun to read and aspects of her that were informed traits in the book are actually demonstrated in her POVs. The characterization and development starts out fine, but really becomes great as the fic progresses. There's so much suspense in not knowing whether Bella survives or not, among other things. It's in-progress.
    • Seconding this rec. I really like this story, pretty intense. Myself and a few other reviewers were shocked with how far the author went but it's a good thing and it is really getting exciting, in my opinion.

  • Pairing: Edward/Charlie
  • Comments: Absolutely sodding hilarious. It's a Crazy Is Cool parody (affectionate). There aren't any vampires, the Cullens all live in a mental asylum and everybody else besides Bella is a horrible mutant (thus the reason everybody is automatically attracted to her). Good for both Twilight fans and Twilight bashers. All the characters are completely OOC but nobody's complaining. It's just too funny.

  • Synopsis: A new take on the Imprinting fics. Embry imprints on Jacob’s cousin. And if the reviews are true, her reaction is rare: the girl, to put it simply, flips her shit and refuses him.
  • Pairing(s): Embry/OC, all other canon, promises of Charlie/OC later and Leah.
  • Comments: The OC is a bit of a jerkass to Embry at first. The canon characters are mostly IC, though the author (who seems to hate the vampires with 2 exceptions) has an interesting view on Nessie. The OC could be any 16-22 year old who finds out they’re involved in a supernatural world. The reviewers like her. And the author has decent snark skills for someone whose about 16. There are some holes in the story but is a first attempt and decently done at that.
    • It's an interesting idea to react badly to the thought of being forced to be with this guy you just met (or re-met in her case) but the writing gets near-hysterical at times and it really seems like she's just going to end up with him anyway so it's more of a 'playing hard to get' kind of story than a 'I will not let myself be fated to be with someone' kind of story which is what I thought it would be from the description.

  • Comments: Brilliant. It's all human, and stars Edward and Bella who are both crazy to various degrees. Bella's characterisation in particular was, in my opinion, great. I found it very easy to believe it of her, and her perspective gives the story a darkly humorous feel. Take note though: this story features violence and sex (not a lot of that though, and not that explicit) and some bad language. It's still great though.

  • Comments: As can probably be seen from the synopsis, "fanfiction" may not be the correct term for this, as it was clearly not written by or for fans of the series. The author takes a ridiculous premise and makes a truly great story out of it. Somehow, the story manages to be simultaneously hilarious, wittily self-referential, meta and, at times, genuinely romantic. And really, how can you say no to a fic with the first line: "Carlisle knew something was amiss when he saw Edward eating pickles dipped in chocolate sauce."
    • Also, I loved the additions of turning Bella into a Fujoshi and reading the cracky parts would make anyone get weird stares in public.

It follows all of them, especially the kids (Rebecca, Rachel, Leah, Bella, Jacob, and Seth), displays actual believable character development, and is both quite witty and very sad. The supernatural elements are hinted at, but ultimately this is a story about the characters and how their lives would have differed. Best of all, Bella is written well enough.

    • First in a fascinating series- the other stories being Reprise, Resilience and Revenant- the storyline sees Bella Swan learn about the existence of posthumans while also discovering her own abilities after Peter and Claire save her from Sylar. The subsequent storyline gives Bella fascinating opportunities to develop, as she falls in love with Peter and forms a strange near-sisterly bond with Claire, to the point that the two of them briefly 'share' powers and make Bella functionally immortal.
    • The author has also created a 'foil' to this series in the form of Lightning Strikes and its sequels, which features Elle Bishop attending Forks High before Bella arrives, which results in her falling for Edward before Bella arrives, while Bella forms a relationship with Peter later.

  • Comments: A crossover with Supernatural that takes place ten years after Breaking Dawn, with Leah Clearwater, Sam and Dean Winchester, and Castiel as the protagonists. This is a totally awesome, kickass fic that brings up everything that is wrong with the Twilight universe (without having to exaggerate or distort anything) - and then introduces a good dosage of reality to it - SPN style of course.
    • Another major draw of the fic for fans of deconstructions is the outsider's view that Sam, Dean, and Castiel bring to the table in regards to the vampires and werewolves of Twilight as said by a brutally honest angel and two very blunt young men. It explores how someone not as close to the main characters would see things like imprinting, Leah's treatment, the vampire's constant hypocrisies, Bella's eagerness to be turned, and the Cullens' supposedly glamorous lifestyle. Also, the fic takes its time, meaning that when we finally arrive at the expected "The Reason You Suck" Speech none of it comes off as being disingenuous, over the top, or full of informed flaws.
