Extreme long runner: by August 2013, this story and its sequels Eljunbyro and Innavedr are approaching 600 chapters and the word count has passed 600,000. If the author isn't joking, he's planning to write a total of 12 stories of 200 chapters each. Usually, one new chapter is released every day. As of December 2015, this fic is not only still alive and on a daily update schedule, it has also broken the 2.5 million mark. A staggering work, to be sure.

Background Pony by shortskirtsandexplosions

  • Recommended by Ezn, Sus
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: My name is Lyra Heartstrings, and you will not remember me. You won't even remember this conversation. Just like with everypony else I've ever met, everything I do or say will be forgotten. Every letter I've written will appear blank; every piece of evidence I've left behind will end up missing. I'm stuck here in Ponyville because of the same curse that has made me so forgettable. Still, that doesn't stop me from doing the one thing that I love: making music. If my melodies find their way into your heart, then there is still hope for me. If I can't prove that I exist, I can at least prove that my love for each and every one of you exists. Please, listen to my story, my symphony, for it is me.

  • Recommended by Kizuna Tallis, Technophile
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: A lone changeling left behind after the failed invasion of Canterlot has been taken in by the Royal Guard, and both he and ponies find their assumptions about each other challenged.
  • Comments: Written by the same man who wrote The Conversion Bureau: Not Alone, it's eloquently written from not the perspectives of the ponies but from the changeling, Pincer, whose experiences lead to a challenge in what he's believed in all his life and his effect on the other ponies around him.

Broken Spirit by Cryssy-miu

  • Synopsis: After a spell gone wrong by Twilight nearly kills a recently-escaped Discord, Fluttershy takes it upon herself to save the spirit, despite all he's done. Will her compassion stir something in the spirit's indifferent heart, or will he always be the enemy she knew?
  • Comments: A heartwarming, sometimes sad AU, with an excellently written Discord. Also has an interesting take on his history with Celestia and Luna.

Cadance of Cloudsdale by Skywriter

  • Recommended by Poptard
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: An ongoing series by the same writer of Princess Celestia Hates Tea and Contraptionology! fame. These short stories document the life of Equestria's youngest princess, Princess Cadance, as she takes on her first royal duties as an ambassador to Cloudsdale.
  • Comments: If you religiously guard your Fanon ideas of Cadance, look elsewhere, but for everyone else, there's a wonderful, character-centric story about one experienced writer's own interpretation of Cadance's development into the beautiful princess she is currently.

A Canterlot Wedding: Aftermath by Black Kyurem.

  • Recommended by Psyga315
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Sometime after the wedding, Twilight Sparkle begins to have recurring nightmares about what would have happened back at Canterlot. This along with the stress put onto her caused her to develop a PSTD related to the wedding, putting her friendship, morals, and even her sanity into question.
  • Comments: Yes, this is yet another Accusation Fic set after A Canterlot Wedding. However, where some have played the trope with Sweet Dreams Fuel and others toy with it through Nightmare Fuel, this simply drenches it with the tears of readers. Everything the other fics have done, this has done more clear cut, and in a way that would probably be realistic for someone who is known for being a neurotic. Forgotten morals being brought up again? It's Twilight in the middle of her PSTD trying to recall the messages that weren't brought up during the rehearsal. Protests over the failure to prevent the invasion? The citizens were about to attempt a no-confidence motion. Calling out the characters? It's from the one person we least expect. The story is also a pretty good Hurt/Comfort Fic too.

Castling Cozy Glow by Silvermyr.

  • Recommended by Tropers/mkmlp
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After "The Ending of the End, Part 2", Princess Twilight Sparkle, now the sole ruling princess of Equestria, is meeting with Rarity and Sweetie Belle to hear out something the latter wanted to discuss with her as a favor to her friend. Not expecting what young Sweetie Belle wants to discuss, is a matter that Twilight was content not to think too hard about up until this point. The matter of a certain villainous child that is currently serving a life sentence in stone… And despite her reservations, Sweetie Belle’s pleas eventually sway her into at least trying to help Cozy Glow reform. Leading to her to reluctantly freeing the evil little filly and taking her in in secret, hoping that she can teach her enemy friendship. Despite Cozy being… less than cooperative with her efforts.
  • Comments: A good take on a Cozy Glow redemption story, that goes at a gradual enough pace with her Character Development to keep it believable. It also calls Twilight out for allowing Cozy Glow's controversially harsh punishment, but doesn't pretend Cozy Glow was not a bad pony who didn't deserve some punishment.
  • Pairing: Cozy Glow and Rumble
  • Notes: The story has two sequels, The Once and the Future Princess which picks off where Castling left off and The Cozy Anthology, continuing off of where TO and FP'' left off.

Cigarettes And Gunmetal by Mono Glyph.

  • Recommended by Erik Howlett
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: "The Solar Kingdom, but not as you know it. Gargantuan skyscrapers line the streets and mechanical transports dot the skies. Artificial constructs reign over most electronics built within the last decade. Mechanical and bioengineered enhancements adorn the body of the modern equine. In short: Sundry tales from a cyberpunk Equestria."
  • Comments: This is one of those stories that hits all of the right notes, especially if you're a fan of Cyberpunk. Artificial Limbs, "Transponyism", City Noir, Playful Hacker Pinkie Pie, Crapsaccharine World, and much much more. I definitely recommend giving this a read.

The Changeling of the Guard by VDrake77

  • Recommended by Fringe Benefits
  • Status: Ongoing
  • Synopsis: The Changeling of the Guard is written from the point of view of Idol Hooves, a very unusual changeling in exile from the hive. Gifted with curiosity unnatural for his kind, Idol goes on a journey through Equestria in a Quest for Identity, eventually ending up among Princess Celestia's Royal Guard. Initially set quite some time before Luna's redemption, the author claims that the story will eventually retell the events of A Canterlot Wedding and beyond from a very different perspective.
  • Comments: I don't think I've ever seen a changeling fanfic go into quite so much depth about the hive, its workings, and the details of shapeshifting itself, but those are all just bonuses. At its heart, The Changeling of the Guard is a damn good story of a misfit Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life, with a sharp attention to detail and a wickedly dry sense of humor. It's excellent so far, and I'm eagerly anticipating more.

  • Comments: Features great writing and a fresh perspective on the characters.

Circus Days by The Dragon Warlock

  • Recommended by: Tropers/mkmlp
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Spike has been feeling lonely lately. Everyday he watches Twilight go off and have fun with her friends while he does the same thing: clean, and do chores. His luck seems to change though when he and Twilight find a flyer for a circus. At the circus, Spike meets and befriends the circus performers, who show him seemingly true love and friendship. Tired of being left out or not being loved by the others, Spike decides to leave Twilight and the others for his new friends. Will they get the baby dragon back?
  • Comments: This story is very cathartic for any Spike fans who do not like his treatment in the show and features a very heartwarming resolution.

Composure by Varanus

  • Recommended by: Molotov
  • Status: Dead
  • Synopsis: The Lighter and Softer take on the same premise of Eternal. It explores the relationship between Twilight Sparkle and Princess Celestia long after the series has ended.
  • Comments: It's only partway done and updates happen only occasionally.

Contraptionology! by Skywriter

  • Recommended by: Xfuture, Emptybee

  • Comments: A Crack Fic in the finest sense of the term, cleverly mixing hilarity and poignancy.

The Equestrian Civil Service Series by Ghost Of Heraclitus

    • Whome the Princesses Would Destroy: Complete
    • A Canterlot Carol: Complete
    • A Princess By Any Other Name: Complete
    • Obiter Dicta: Complete
  • Synopsis: Dotted Line, cabinet secretary of the Equestrian Civil Service, does in no particular order: Does paperwork, get infested by an Eldritch Abomination, lie to reporters, valiantly fight off custard and jam, swears at his boss, prepare for a surprise visit of the worst sort, deal with bratty teenage goddesses, charge an Eldritch Abomination, celebrates Heartwarming, and does more paperwork.
  • Comments: The writing in this series is simply fantastic, with many readers comparing it to the style of Douglas Adams or Terry Pratchett, full of dry wit in the face of absurdity. The author set out to present his characters as "heroic bureaucrats" and ably succeeded in Dotted Line, a short-tempered but determined Cabinet Secretary and one of the best OCs of all time.

Turns out, perhaps unsurprisingly, she's not all that good at the whole villain thing and Hilarity Ensues.

Faith and Doubt by defender2222

  • Recommended by Dont Kill Bugs, Omicronus, Psyga315
  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: After her outburst during the Canterlot Wedding Fiasco, Twilight's mind, in a very dark place, finally breaks. Not into a homicidal rage- she simply does not care anymore. With Twilight no longer wishing to be part of Friendship or Harmony, it's up to her friends and family to undo the damage they've done.
  • Comments: An amazing story that, aside from pointing out the flaws with the Canterlot Wedding Fiasco, also features one of the Mane Six being broken without becoming the stock homicidal killer. It should also be noted that, while everyone is shown to have made mistakes, no one is shown to be completely at fault- the story makes it abundantly clear that Twilight's mind is focusing entirely on the bad and ignoring the good.

The First Of Many by NotARealPonydotcom

  • Recommended by Poptard

  • Synopsis: Twilight Sparkle is stressed, for some very good reasons: it's only been a few weeks since she was moved to Canterlot Castle to assume control of the duties of a princess, and she's still getting used to the constant stream of paperwork; she's trying to figure out when and how she'll be able to see her Ponyville friends again; and, to top it off, her first day off from princess duty is the night of her first date. So, seeing her obvious stress, Twilight's one and only BBBFF Shining Armor decided to tell her how his life started down the road leading to his crowning Prince of the Crystal Empire...
  • Comments: A wondeful short-but-sweet story about the first date of Shining Armor in Princess Cadance. Setting their story as a story Shining tells Twilight to calm her down works perfectly, giving even more sibling-love heartwarming next to romantic-love heartwarming. This story strikes has just the right balance between prose and plot progression, humorous and heartwarming, and it's a must-read for anyone who likes Cadance or Shining Armor.

Others seem to have life thrust upon them in ways they will never expect, but everypony is different right? Whoever said life gets boring once all the prep is done was wrong. Follow the day to day misadventures of a group of ponies starting what some would call the prime of their lives, a time when anything can happen. From the day to day jobs, to meeting new friends, to maybe some romance, and of course the crazy adventures you come to expect from the town of Ponyville. Yes, some say college is the way to prepare for your life, but many wise ponies will tell, as with many things... "The end of one adventure is only the beginning of another."

Getting Back on Your Hooves by Shadow Raikou and Godzillawolf

  • Synopsis: The once "great and powerful" traveling magician Trixie is reduced to abject poverty, her career completely ruined after the Ursa Minor incident. And while Twilight Sparkle tries to help redeem her name, a mysterious and very wealthy businessmare seems to be particularly keen on keeping her down. Just what is their connection, and what are her intentions?
  • Comments: It starts a bit weak. And it's annoying how Trixie doesn't relent on her illeism. But the amount of detail in the writing is quite impressive - there are even lyrics, as if it was a script for a musical episode, and the mindgames in the final chapter are breathtaking.

  • Synopsis: Twilight gets Starswirl's spell right the first time, causing all six Elements to ascend at once. But Celestia and Luna still need more alicorns for their plan to end mortality, so they send the six new Princesses out to find more. Though Luna would prefer that they focus on finding some alicorn stallions.
  • Notes: Nicely inverts the immortality sucks trope that seems particularly endemic to MLP fanfics, the Princesses are tired of burying their loved ones but they'd much rather make everypony else immortal than the alternative.
  • A sequel to the short fic Parting Words, though not required.

  • Status: Dormant; last updated October 2017
  • Synopsis: After the Changeling invasion, Celestia and Luna make the decision to have Twilight investigate the Elements of Harmony and solve the mystery of their power. A thousand years later, Rainbow Dash awakens in a world she does not recognize. She has no idea how or why she came to be there. She does not know the language, the geography or any of the rules of this new time. She soon finds allies in Star Fall, a scholarly pegasus whose Talent is Magic, and Astrid, Star Fall's Griffin guardian. Together they set out to discover why Dash has been sent to the future, and how she might return to when she belongs. War threatens the nations, a Nightmare stalks the shadows, and Rainbow Dash's arrival has turned her into a wild card in a deadly game that pits the law on both sides of a broken Equestria against a mysterious criminal figure, Max Cash. Yet the stakes are higher than anyone knows, for in her research Twilight Sparkle discovered a dark secret about the Elements, something that will shake the foundations of the world.
  • Comments: This fic is just fantastic. When it comes to canon characters, characterization is spot-on and faithful to the show. The OCs are, incredibly, as interesting and well-developed as the canon characters. The plot is incredibly entertaining and well-constructed, the pacing is excellent, the mysteries gripping. Prose, grammar, and the "mechanical" aspects of writing are near perfect. If you have the time, I recommend a reading binge. The author generally updates every two weeks, with occasional, relatively short hiatuses when busy with real life, and when Sharaloth does update, the updates range between 8000 and 20000 words.

What is the importance of family? Of bloodlines? Of sacrifice? What does it truly mean to be alicorn?
  • Comments: A sequel to Fairy-Slayer's MLP:FiM - Mommy Nearest [dead link], this fic, and its author, are just fantastic. The characterizations of the ponies remain incredibly true to the show, and the OCs are well-crafted. The plot is interesting and gripping. The writing takes the cake, it is quite simply amazing. Aldea Donder took a weird, "out there" concept like Rainbow Dash being Celestia's daughter and makes it work. This fic is arguably better than the fic that inspired it, which itself is fairly good.

Now, she has one last chance to find a place for her talent. But as she works to create the boutique of her dreams, a forgotten piece of Ponyville’s past is waking up. Secret memories lie forgotten in dusty basements, unrighted wrongs scratch at locked doors, and Rarity finds herself caught up in a history that may be doomed to repeat itself. For although she is the first to set hoof in the Old Town Hall in thirty years, she can’t help but feel that something inside was waiting for her.
  • Comments: A chilling, suspenseful horror story involving a vengeful spirit, a gradually unfolding tragic back story, and sanity slippage, all while being pretty much canon-compliant and having a positive resolution and a happy ending.

Celestia tries in vain to calm her down, but having no other choice she's forced to use a shrinking spell on the filly in order to tone down her dangerous surge of power. After the exam, Celestia takes the tiny Twilight as her personal student to teach the young unicorn control over her powerful magic, making sure that she will pose no threat to other beings.
  • Comments: Commander X 5 takes what would seem like a crackfic premise and works it into an long-running, emotional story that ranges from the hilarious to the deadly serious. It is finished, but the sequel ''Ponyville's Tiny Librarian is a direct follow-up. It also has two side stories.

As it turns out, however, windigos are not the only things hiding in the north, and Trixie may not be as safe from her own problems as she thinks...

With fresh new ideas and all the energy of youth, Spike is ready to make the life of the Mane 6 impossible; along with his loyal partners: the CMC
  • comments: Spike becoming the lord of chaos isn't an idea you see that often but the author here takes that plot and runs with it to create a hilarious story. I mean You've got the CMC (plus a few others) joining him to form basically a chaotic version of the elements of harmony and using that position to screw with them, and the rest of equestria, on a regular basis in a wide variety of ways: time travel, ponies rioting to 'another brick in the wall', turning the equestria girl's universe into a circus, and more. It's a fun ride from start to finish.

  • Status: Complete
  • Synopsis: Caught in the middle of a struggle between Equestria and a neighboring country, Blueblood finds himself alone in unfriendly territory. Through trials and hardships he slowly begins to change into the prince that his country needs.
  • Comments: You've probably seen a lot of fics of Blueblood getting a Humiliation Conga that makes him see the error of his ways. But this is in a whole new level. With an interesting expansion of the Equestrian world, beautiful plot advancement, and more character development than you can shake a stick at (particularly on Blueblood's part), I consider this a must-read and won't say anything else so as to keep it unspoiled.
    Be warned, it's pretty dark.

  • Status: Dormant
  • Synopsis: When Rainbow Dash's parents come to Ponyville, her friends learn that she might not be the pony they thought she was. Will Dash's secret drive her friends away from her, and will her parents still accept her?
  • Comments: Saying why this fanfiction is so amazing would involve spoiling the secret, which is unfortunate because this fic is oozing with real-world relevance and I recommend it to anyone dealing with this issue regardless of whether or not they're a MLP:FiM fan. Turns out Rainbow Dash was born a colt, named Sonic Dash. Her parents refuse to acknowledge her female identity and insist that Sonic was just going through a phase that he should've grown out of by now. The rest of the mane cast's reactions vary (Fluttershy already knew, of course, and Rarity had figured it out on her own, but naturally Applejack takes it the worst due to the dishonesty involved). Truly an outstanding take on the struggle faced by those whose gender identity doesn't match their biological sex.

The alicorn sisters are dead and Equestria has turned to Twilight Sparkle to guide it. However, just maintaining a dim sun a fraction as bright as her mentor's keeps the new princess near her limits. Years have passed and Twilight Sparkle is sure of only one thing. Equestria is dying.
  • Tags: Sad. Dark.
  • Comments: This story is a very new and very interesting take on the "Twilight becomes an alicorn" idea. Instead of her ascension being of happenstance or her distance ancestry or some such thing, it is from necessity. Also, instead of Equestria staying normal as a whole, everything is in a downward spiral, even with Twilight's help. War is on the horizon, ponies are threatened by the things that go 'bump' in the night, and the moon and stars haven't been seen for more than forty years.

Fluffershy by Friendly Uncle

  • Synopsis: Fluttershy's such a sweet, innocent, naive little pony. She's probably never even looked at a stallion! ...so why is her butt plastered all over the front of the DVD case Pinkie Pie just found? Surely there's a good explanation for this, our heroes just have to figure out what it is. There's no way Fluttershy's actually a porn star. ...right?
  • Comments: As with Estrus, Friendly Uncle deals with a taboo subject in a way that a) keeps everyone in-character, and b) is flatout hilarious.

  • Synopsis: After an unfortunate incident involving Rainbow Dash and herbal tea, Fluttershy wakes up one morning to discover that she has turned into a rabbit! With her friends unaware of her plight, Fluttershy must turn to Angel bunny to guide her on her quest to restore her original form. In the process, she is given the oppurtunity to experience everyday life in Ponyville from a whole ... new perspective, and discovers that there is much more to her friends' pets than she ever expected.
  • Comments: This is just great. The interactions, the conflict, the story. Okay, the story isn't much new, but it give's it that originality that we've come to know so much. And by the interactions between Angel and Fluttershy shows that, once and for all, despite outwardly apperances, he really does care for the filly that's raised him as her own. Throw in some hilarity ensuing and you've got yourself a real dandy (in a good way.) Plus, Angel speaking in a Brooklyn accent. Need I say more?

  • Synopsis: Tragedy today as the First and National was attacked—assaulted by a group of masked madwomen in what’s being termed a ‘hurricane of murder and insanity.’ Dozens dead and even more wounded, with tens of thousands of dollars worth of collateral all that remains. The police are completely baffled, with no leads, no suspects—nothing but funeral after funeral and an unhappy government looking for anyone to blame and anyone to charge for this heinous crime. The biggest question on the minds of the citizens is: Why? Years of peace, broken and shattered, now lying in a crumpled, bloodied mess...and for what? Money? This anchor has never been so disgusted in his many years of news reporting.
  • Comments: Imagine Heat. Imagine Reservoir Dogs. Imagine any of the scores from GTA V. Then take that cinematic punch and flair and marry it to Friendship is Magic for a heist that, believe it or not, is going to a worthy cause. The writing is solid, and the action is great. The highlights in the characterization are illustrated throug the action and the dialogue is on point. And the last character anyone would expect to ends up sniping a chopper out of the sky. 10/10

Can Discord be the ruler Equestria needs? Or is he truly doomed to become the monster he is seen to be?
  • Comments: This fic taking place starting at Discord's creation and shows the truth of his reign over Equestria over a thousand years ago and just how Screwball fits into it all. It carries both great comedy and tragedy in equal measure and is astoundingly well done.

Heavenly Turmoil by The Man With Two Names

  • Warnings: major and minor character death, occasional violence
  • Synopsis: Princess Celestia struggles to distinguish reality from illusion as Discord begins to seep into her brain. But... isn't Discord still imprisoned in stone?
  • Comments: This very, very dark fic takes an interesting twist on the complex relationship between Discord and Celestia (in case you're wondering: no, they are not lovers in this one). The writing and the characterization are excellently done (it features some well-made OCs as well), and instead of being a cheap gorefest, it relies heavily on psychological horror, managing to be genuinely scary. Be warned though: it's a darkfic, and an extremely sad one at that.
