    The series in general
  • Alliterative Title:
    • W and S for Witches Wizards Shadows and Souls
    • M and D for Magic Monsters Dominions and Destiny

    Witches Wizards Shadows and Souls
  • Achievements in Ignorance: The YGO gang spend the first few months in Hogwarts trying to figure out how to make their duel disks work. Then at the end of the fic Kaiba flies his jet in Hogwarts grounds with no trouble and zero modifications.
  • Arbitrary Scepticism: As per dub canon, Kaiba refuses to believe in magic even when he actually has to use it to defend himself from the Death Eaters. Others note that his attitude limits his abilities quite a bit, as he should have been about as strong as the Pharaoh himself, yet gets drained if he tries to use anything other than his Blue-Eyes.
  • Ascended Extra: Ryou Bakura was a side character in the anime (as most of his on-screen time was him being possessed by the Thief King), but is a major character here as he joins Yugi and Malik in Hogwarts.
  • Batman Gambit: It's pointed out that half the game in Duel Monsters is tricking your oponent, not just playing your cards right. For example, Bakura's cards being specifically selected to freak out people.
  • Beast in the Building: Kaiba's response to Yugi's first letter from Hogwarts is an angry rant about how his secretary almost fainted from seeing an owl indoors.
  • Big Bad Duumvirate: The whole plot is about how Voldemort allied with the Orichalcos - though in reality, Voldemort has no idea that the Orichalcos is sentient, and the Orichalcos is only using him. Not that this excuses Voldemort in any way.
  • Broken Pedestal: Harry, Ron, and Hermione feel extremely betrayed by the fact that Yugi and Ryou host their "darks" in them because of their own negative experiences with Voldemort, especially after they find out about how Yami lost Yugi's soul.
  • Call-Back: The characters occasionally reference events that happened during Yu-Gi-Oh! (first anime series), such as Yami's Punishment Game on Sadist Teacher Miss Chouno. It becomes a lot more than mere call backs when Hirutani returns as an antagonist on the Orichalcos side.
  • Category Traitor: According to the two Slytherin girls who decide to joing DA, anyone in Slytherin who isn't planning to join the Death Eaters (or already has) is a Blood Traitor in their eyes. Unfortunately, this view extends to the Death Eaters themselves, as the girls are killed during and after Christmas Vacation.
  • Chick Magnet: Poor, poor Ryou.
Ryou: Yami I have bad news.
Bakura: The Pharaoh's remembered his past?
    Ryou: Worse.
Bakura: Malik's ass of a yami has returned?
    Ryou: Worse.
Bakura: What could possibly be worse?
Ryou: The hall is full of rabid looking fangirls.
Bakura: [Beat] Damn that is worse!
  • Contrived Coincidence: Fudge visited Japan for a diplomatic visit and the Death Eaters made a terrorist attack there. It just so happened that the YGO gang was there.
  • Cute Kitten: Ryou gets a kitten he names Bastet because he simply can't abandon the little thing. Even Bakura goes all soft around it.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: The YGO gang uses Shadow Magic, but is firmly against Voldemort and the Oreichalcos. However, their belief in this trope is one of the many reasons why they eventually they have a huge fall-out with the HP gang, which associates dark magic with Voldemort and his followers.
  • Death by Adaptation: Lucious Malfoy dies in the climax of the fic after being too burdened by Oreichalcos magic and transforming into a beast.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: Sharing your mind with a different person is seen as normal by the YGO gang, who are used to them as scary but friendly people, but it is an anathema to the HP gang, who's experienced boil down to being possessed by Voldemort. They have a severe fallout over this.
  • Dies Differently in Adaptation: Bellatrix loses her soul in the first chapter after falling unconscious inside an Orichalcos barrier. In the books, she is killed by Molly Weasley in the battle of Hogwarts.
  • Evil-Detecting Dog: It's noted that animals avoid the old Ridle family home where Voldemort has set base because it's steeped with dark magic.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy: Several Death Eaters find out the hard way that using Orichalcos magic doesn't always end well for the user, prime example being Lucious Malfoy.
  • Failed a Spot Check: Raquiel somehow made it to her contnent's finals without finding out how Quick effects work. She even lampshades it when he sees Kaiba abuse the hell of them during his turn and thinks to herself that she doesn't deserve her title.
  • Famed In-Story:
    • Since the fic takes places post the Kaibacorp Grand Prix for the YGO side, most of the main cast are already world famous. This comes in handy for the Order of Phoenix as one of the muggleborn members recognizes them from Dumbledore's piensive memories because his son is a fan of the game, and the Order manages to get lots of information out of the kid (who is more than eager to share).
    • Harry is bemused but also relieved that the YGO gang has no idea who he is.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Draco slowly starts one after the point he realizes that his father tricked him into bringing an Orichalcos stone in Hogwarts. This is followed by being inflicted a Punishment Game by Yami which makes him realize that he never had any real friendships or close relationships.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Joey takes an attack meant for Kaiba during their tag duel, thus losing his soul to the Orichalcos.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: Some Death Eaters decide to pick up Duel Monsters to use the effects of Orichalcos better, which they acknowledge is ironic considering it's a muggle game. They believe the ends justify the means.
  • Likes Older Women: Hirutani mocks Joey for liking the significantly older Mai.
  • Magical Accessory: Notable Death Eaters are given a pendant with an Orichalcos stone. It also doubles as Amplifier Artifact, because it enhances their magic and physical prowess.
  • Memory Trigger: In order to keep the nature of their Shadow Magic a secret, Bakura erases the memories of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, but warns the others that if they see Shadow Magic performed again they will remember everything. It turns out to be a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy when circumstances force Bakura to summon Diabound in front of them, triggering the memories of the last time they saw the monster.
  • Mistaken for Quake: When the Death Eaters attempt to attack Kaiba Corp, Kaiba unleashes Blue-Eyes White Dragon on them with an attack so strong that it actually shakes the foundations of the building (and was mistaken for an actual earthquake by outsiders). He pulls an even stronger one when he defeats Raquiel with Ultimate Dragon - that one's so strong that Mako, who was out sailing at the time, thought that a tsunami was coming.
  • My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Those who have been exposed to the Orichalcos are able to sense its presence with great accuracy. Unfortunately, that also makes them more vulnerable to its influence.
  • Never Recycle a Building: The old Ridle mansion sat abandoned and nobody paid attention to the place for decades - until an old man was killed in it. And even then nobody cared too much about it. Voldemort is now using it as his base of operations because it's that inconspicuous.
  • Omniglot:
    • The Pharaoh knows Japanese, Egyptian, Babylonian, and Hebrew, and by extension Yugi can understand them as well.
    • Malik knows Japanese, Ancient Egyptian, and Arabic.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Played for Laughs in New Years, when instead of fighting, Bakura and the Pharaoh start talking about sunrises. Ryou thinks that the world is ending.
  • Passing Notes in Class: Knowing they'd get no other chance to talk in complete privacy without the HP gang listening in, the YGO crew spends DADA class passing notes written in Ancient Egyptian about Ryou's prophecy on the Orichalcos and other related matters. Unfortunately for them, Hermione retrieves the notes and manages to translate them.
  • Purposefully Overpowered: Lampshaded when Yugi, the Pharaoh, Kaiba, and Joey fill in Malik, Ryou, and Bakura on the effects of the Seal of Orichalcos.
Malik: I'm sorry, do these people believe in actually playing fair?
    Yami, Kaiba, and Joey: No.
  • Reformed, but Not Tamed: The Thief King is no longer trying to kill the Pharaoh or Ryou, but he has exactly zero mercy towards anyone who does.
  • Right for the Wrong Reasons: Wizarding authorities think that Voldemort is behind the attacks that left several wizards and muggles soulless because that could have only been done by Dementors, who work for him. Voldemort really is behind the attacks, but they used Oreichalcos stones for it, not Dementors.
  • Running Gag: Hermione complaining about how far Duel Monsters and Quidditch players are willing to go for their games, to which everyone invariably responds "Hermione... you just don't get it."
  • Soul Eating: Orichalcos maintains this property, making the wizards think that the victims were attacked by Dementors.
  • Summon Magic: Yugi/The Pharaoh, Ryou/Bakura, Malik, and Kaiba, are all capable of summoning their monsters in the real world as per canon. They can also lent this power to other people, though it drains them as if they were summoning themselves.
  • Take That!: The Sorting Hat complains that Yugi has the most uncomfortable hair it's ever sat on, and it's been through the fifties and sixties.
  • Those Two Guys: Lampshaded with Weevil and Rex Raptor - the cast is surprised that those two haven't shown up on the side of the antagonists and keep an eye out for them. They do eventually.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Hogwarts magic enhances the magic of the Shadow magic users so much that by the end of the fic the Yami's can temporarily manifest in physical forms.
  • Translator Microbes: There are magic patches that can shove an extra language in your head, which is how Yugi and Malik are able to communicate in English.
  • When Elders Attack: Bakura and Malik are chased out of Knockturn Alley by an angry mob of hags who needed to reason to chase them but hear the shop owner yelling at them.
  • Woken Up at an Ungodly Hour: Dumbledore goes to Yugi's house to drop his Info Dump on the Death Eaters after he saw him and his friends fend them off with their magic, but because of the timezone difference what was a reasonable hour for Dumbledore is around three or four in the morning in Japan. Yugi and all the people he has over for a sleepover are not happy at the visit; Yugi and the Pharaoh in particular wory about Grandpa Solomon being woken up after a stressful day.
  • Wrong Context Magic: Shadow Magic and the Orichalcos for most of the wizarding world. Wizards are frequently baffled by the things their respective users do, such as reflecting the Killing Curse with Mirror Force, or thinking it was Dementors who are responsible for the missing souls.

    Magic Monsters Dominions and Destiny
  • Adaptation Expansion: Balura receives this in spades, as the fic gets into detail about his life before his family was murdered and his friend group. He also occasionally describes incident that the Pharaoh has no way of disputing.
  • Arbitrary Scepticism: Kaiba is back, and his attitude causes even more issues. Specifically, he dismisses his dreams with Kisara as just dreams, and she gets extremely mad with him because she's trying to warn him for the incoming threat on the Dominion of Souls, on top of it putting a huge strain on their relationship. In the final chapter he admits that the reason he denies magic is because he doesn't like having answers or control over his situation, and magic is definitely something beyond his control.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Joey's response when Harry asks him why Malik never had a girlfriend.
Joey: And [Malik] doesn't have anyone I can tease him about. So unfair...
    Harry: Anyone? Not ever?
Joey: Nope. Not really surprising I guess - between living underground and then going off running a group of card thieves and trying to kill the Pharaoh, it probably didn't leave much time for dating.
    Harry: ...he did what?!
Joey: Besides, I'm about sixty percent sure he's gay.
  • BFS: Played for Laughs during a duel where Joey equips one of these to a Scapegoat of all things. Even his Imperius'ed opponent dies laughing at it.
  • Blue-and-Orange Morality: Discussed when Yami asks Harry if he thinks that he (Yami) is evil. Harry decides to go for the Brutal Honesty approach, and concludes that Yami has a very alarming idea of justice laced with Deliberate Values Dissonance, and that he's insane, but he's not evil because then he wouldn't listen when Yugi tells him to stop.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Dumbledore and Pegasus both prove this in spades when they tag-team in a duel. Dumbledore is using Elemental Heroes of all decks.
  • Call-Forward: There is an absolute ton of references to Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.
    • When Ron decides to pick up the game, he chooses to go for an Archfiend deck that's basically the same as Titan's.
    • Dumbledore reveals that he learned how to duel from Pegasus, and his deck of choice is Elemental Heroes.
    • Several of the contestants at the World Championships use cards that debuted in the GX anime and manga, such as Dark World or Darklord.
    • The Orichalcos created the Three Phantasmal Beasts by infusing the Three Egyptian God cards with its magic.
    • In the last chapter, Kaiba and Kisara discuss creating a school for duelling.
  • Chained to a Railway: A variation occurs where instead of chains, Joey and a brainwashed Koji are forced to duel in an Orichalcos barrier on the train tracks. Because of the Orichalcos they cannot change their location. If they don't wrap up the duel fast enough, the train will kill them both.
  • Child Prodigy: Rebecca, who is quite frustrated by the fact that she's about to get her degree soon but won't be able to legally make decisions for herself until she is much older. She also becomes fast friends with Hermione over being the "smart one" in their peers and thus ostracised.
  • Cruel and Unusual Death: Yami Marik kills the traitor gravekeeper by cutting off his limbs one by one with a knife, starting with the finger and toe joints. And then he started getting sloppy because he was in a hurry. The end result is described in graphic detail, and it's not for weak stomachs.
  • Dead Guy Junior: Ryou names Bastet's kittens after Bakura's old friends.
  • Death by Adaptation:
    • Umbridge kicks the bucket after Bakura inflicts a Punishment Game on her.
    • Yami Malik dies for good as opposed to being sealed in the Shadow Realm.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance:
    • Malik complains that he's not yet of legal drinking age in the UK even though he could drink beer for years in Egypt.
    • During his assessment of the Pharaoh's character during his Shadow Game, Harry states that the Pharaoh has trouble coping with how the world no longer works the same way as it did 5000 years ago.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Bakura spends an entire day getting drunk after Ryou sacrifices himself to the Orichalcos.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: At the very end, Bakura's little sister, who had her heart destroyed and therefore couldn't be weighed, is allowed to go to the Field of Reeds because every single soul for the past 5000 years told the gods how incredibly kind and devoted she is. They decided to let her cross without a weighing ages ago, she just never decided to go through the gates herself.
  • Everyone Must Be Paired: The final features Mai and Joey, Tea and Yugi, and Ron and Hermione all getting together, Kaiba and Kisara getting back together after a very long break, and possibly Malik and Ryou getting together if Ron's comments are any indication. Even Bastet the cat has kittens.
  • Evil Is Not a Toy:
    • Even after the chaos that was the previous fic's version of the battle of Hogwarts, Voldemort still hasn't learned that magic is sentient and has its own agenda. Yami Malik openly mocks him for this, but never reveals to him where exactly he's wrong. When Voldemort is told that Oreichalcos was only using him and took over Nagini, he is dismissive and in denial.
  • Failed a Spot Check: The ministry arrests Yugi, and Malik for murder (along with Joey and Tristan for fighting them) because a copy of Monster Reborn was placed next to Oshar's corpse, completely missing the fact that all duelists run at least one copy of the card.
  • Flashback Nightmare: Mai still gets nightmares of her Punishment Game at the hands of Yami Marik.
  • Foreign-Language Tirade:
    • Hana starts cursing at Bakura in Afrikaan during their duel.
    • Upon finding out that the ministry arrested Yugi and part of his gang for murder, Bakura starts a tirade in Ancient Egyptian so foul that Kaiba actually breaks his "pretending not to understand" act. Probably a good thing that a translation is not provided.
  • Irony: Bakura laughs at the irony of drowning his sorrows with the Pharaoh when he used to want to murder the guy. He says that one of his old friends Kebi would lose his shit if he found out.
  • Loophole Abuse:
    • When Joey and Koji are forced to fight against each other in an Orichalcos duel, the two decide to work together and end the duel in a draw, as it cannot take their souls that way.
    • The Hogwarts gang uses this trope to prevent the ministry officials from wiping the memory of every non-Hogwarts student at the end of the fic; they point out that Kaiba and Joey are technically magic users (Joey courtesy of Critias), and the rest have known about magic for years (long before they even made contact with the wizard world) so it would be impractical at best. When they wipe out some of those memories anyway, they had already taken precautions and stored them in a Pensieve.
  • Original Character: Several of the participants in the World Championships, as they are high-ranking duelists from all around the world.
  • Parental Abandonment: One of the main sources of Ryou's issues is that his father abandoned him to Japan at fifteen to live alone immediately after the death of the rest of their family with absolutely no support beyond financial and no contact between the two other than "Happy Birthday" cards. It all comes to a head when Ryou gives him an absolutely scathing "The Reason You Suck" Speech over this.
  • Precision F-Strike: Upon learning that Ryou killed a Death Eater, the Pharaoh spits a curse in Ancient Egyptian so foul that Bakura was surprised he even knew it.
  • Reincarnation Romance: The fact that Kaiba denies magic when in a waking state creates quite a few issues for said romance. It works out eventually though...
  • Sexy Discretion Shot: In the dreams when Kisara contacts Kaiba, it's strongly implied that the two of them have sex before or after their conversations.
  • Shout-Out: Yugi, while drunk in Kaibaland, yelling at a statue of the Blue-Eyes White Dragon:
  • Theme Naming: Instead of numbers, the stands at the tournament are categorized by duel monster names. It was Pegasus' idea.
  • These Hands Have Killed: Ryou has constant nightmares after having to kill a Death Eater in self-defense, to the point he keeps washing his hands because he can't unsee the blood on them. Marik has to stop him from doing some real damage to himself.
  • Tournament Arc: The fic takes place during the World Duel Championship. While some chapters focus on the actual Championship, Oreichalcos interference completely derails it.
  • Traumatic Superpower Awakening: Seers achieve their True Sight only after they have killed someone. Which is exactly what happens to Ryou.
  • Wacky Marriage Proposal: Mai has been at the receiving end of several of those, including a politician lighting up the sky with her name.
  • Will They or Won't They?:
    • Harry is really, really done with watching Ron and Hermione dancing around each other.
Harry: I swear, some of Umbridge's classes moved faster than those two.
    • Even the Dominion of Beasts have bets on when or if Joey and Mai will get together.
