Go To

The SuperStarr Chronicles by L1701E is an X-Men: Evolution fanfic that is set after the events of the episode "The Cauldron". According to the author, it's meant to be an "enhanced remake" of an older story called The Starr Chronicles.

Shortly after the Brotherhood return to Earth from Asteroid M, they're left leaderless. When a spaceship containing a quartet of mutants crash-lands near their home, they find themselves with some new friends...

The story also has a prelude one-shot: The SuperStarr Chronicles: 1939. Set in the titular year, it tells the tale of Clara Creed witnessing Phineas T. Horton's unveiling of the original Human Torch alongside Phil Sheldon, Cliff Secord, and Jenny Blake.

The SuperStarr Chronicles contains examples of:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Scott finds amusement in Craig being able to easily smack around the super-fast Pietro.
  • Adaptation Expansion: The main thing this story establishes is that like the mainstream Marvel comics, this version of the X-Men: Evolution universe has a long history of superheroes and supervillains.
    • The story also expands on obscure Marvel characters the comics never did. For example, this story establishes that First Line member Firefall is a Native Hawaiian woman named Tandy Waihe'e, and is a descendant of Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess. The Lost Generation miniseries revealed very little about her comic counterpart.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Appropriate for her being British-Indian in this fic, Lila Cheney's full name here is Delilah Chopra-Cheney.
    • A twist on this trope occurs in Principal Kelly's case. The series renamed him Edward Kelly (Edward being his middle name in the comics), but the fic's version of the events of the episode "Growing Pains" (which was his debut in the series) restores his comic first name of Robert Kelly.
  • Alliterative Name: In her cameo in chapter 16, Star Sign is established to have the name Lisa Leialoha.
  • Author Appeal: As shown in other stories of his like Coreline: Invasion of Portland and Infinity Crisis: The Inhumans, the author is a fan of obscure characters.
  • Ascended Extra: Obscure and lesser-known characters from throughout the history of the Marvel Universe get acknowledged in this story.
    • The first chapter introduces Clara Creed. She is an actual comic character, first appearing in Origin II #2 (January 2014). And like in the comics, she's Sabertooth's sister.
      • In her thoughts, she mentions the unveiling of Jim Hammond, the original Human Torch. Hammond debuted in Marvel Comics #1 (October 1939). The SuperStarr Chronicles: 1939 reveals that Clara witnessed said unveiling.
      • One of the 'flash-forwards' in the first chapter reveals Professor Xavier discussing a potential demonic attack on Bayville with Gabriel the Devil-Hunter. Gabriel first appeared in Haunt of Horror #2 (July 1974).
    • The second chapter reveals that Clara, Lila, Paul, and Craig Starr were captives of cosmic scientist the Stranger. The Stranger first appeared in X-Men #11 (May 1965).
      • The second chapter also reveals that Xavier's mutant archive (mentioned in the episode "Survival of the Fittest") was derived from the files of Tobias Messenger, a character that first appeared in X-Men: The Hidden Years #17 (April 2001) and was retconned to have appeared in Amazing Adult Fantasy #14 (July 1962).
    • The third chapter introduces Bounty, a character that first appeared in Silver Surfer #123 (December 1996).

      • She also mentions the Liberty Legion, who debuted in Marvel Premiere #29 (April 1976).
    • In the fourth chapter, during the battle against Bounty, Principal Kelly mentions the First Line, a superhero team that first appeared in Marvel: The Lost Generation #12 (March 2000).
      • Clara goes on to imply that First Line member Black Fox was an old friend of hers.
Clara: Oh, Robbie, my old friend...I wish I could have saved you...
    • In the sixth chapter, Xavier wonders if there's a connection between the New York-based winged vigilante called the Avenging Angel and one of a similar name that operated during World War II. Said WWII-era vigilante first appeared in Marvel Comics #1 (October 1939).
    • In the seventh chapter, Clara claims to have been a member of Nick Fury’s Avengers Initiative, who first appeared in New Avengers #10 (March 2011).
      • She also states that she fought the Golden Claw alongside the Agents of Atlas. The Golden Claw debuted in Yellow Claw #1 (October 1956), and the Agents of Atlas debuted in What If #9 (June 1978).
      • And finally, she claims to have fought monsters alongside the Monster Hunters, who debuted in Marvel Universe #4 (September 1998).

      • Polanski recalls that among New York's superheroes is Captain Brooklyn, who debuted in Justice #31 (January 1989), a title set in Marvel's New Universe line.
    • In chapter 12, the Brotherhood travel to Scotland, where they meet Lady Daemon and her companion Ian MacInnis. Lady Daemon and Ian MacInnis debuted in Bizarre Adventures #25 (March 1981).
    • In Chapter 13, Alisabeth Daemon is shown speaking to Kthara, who first appeared in Marvel Spotlight #24 (October 1975).
    • In Chapter 15, there is a scene of Spider-Man joining forces with the previously mentioned Captain Brooklyn and Captain Manhattan to take on a pair of supervillains: Carapace and the Spot. Captain Manhattan first appeared in D.P.7 #30 (December 1988). Carapace first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #583 (March 2009). The Spot first appeared in Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #98 (January 1985).
    • In Chapter 16, Firefall appears alongside her young sidekick: Star Sign. They are seen in Hawaii battling Joystick. Star Sign first appeared in Avengers: The Initiative #14 (August 2008), and Joystick debuted in Amazing Scarlet Spider #2 (December 1995).
  • Blessed with Suck: Paul Starr does not like using his hypnotic powers as he finds being able to control minds creepy.
  • Butt-Monkey: Pietro. He is the receiver of Looney Tunes-level violence, especially in chapter six.
  • Canon Immigrant: In chapter five, it's revealed that after the events of "Middleverse", Forge had ended up with Phil Coulson and his crew from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

  • Crossover: In 1939, it's revealed that the original Human Torch's unveiling was also witnessed by Cliff Secord and Jenny Blake from the film version of The Rocketeer.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Clara Creed and her young wards hand the Brotherhood quick beatings due to their combined usage of tactics, powers, and weapons in Lila and Craig's case.
  • Dawn of an Era: In the fourth chapter, Clara hints that the X-Men are just a part of a new generation of superheroes on the rise.
Clara: There's a new age of heroes on the horizon. Those four astronauts, that rich guy in Malibu with his fancy armor, a couple of vigilantes in New York. One with wings, and one that can climb walls and spin webs. I've even heard about sightings of some green monster and a blond guy with a funny hammer in the Southwest.
  • Deconstruction: In chapter 11, Sgt. Harold Polanski points out to Cyclops that the X-Men cannot keep mutants hidden forever.
  • Door Stopper: The original version of The Starr Chronicles is over 100 chapters and nearly 175,000 words long.
    • The new version has twenty-two chapters as of February 2024 and it's already over 120,000 words.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Played with. Clara hints about Warren "Angel" Worthington III and Xavier hints about Hank "Beast" McCoy.
    • A pre-transformation Beast appears in chapter six, preventing a brawl between Paul Starr and some jocks.
    • In chapter nine, Arcade appears earlier than in the episode "Fun and Games". This story also reveals that "Webber Torque" is a name that he chooses to go by, with his birth name being Edward Baer. The same chapter also features an early appearance by the kid that tried to bully Kurt and Rogue in the episode "Operation: Rebirth".
  • Foreshadowing: The first chapter hints at several possible future events in the story. It's later shown that some of these "flash-forwards" were done as a joke. However, two of these "flash-forwards" allude to two storylines from the original version of The Starr Chronicles: "Speed of Sound" and "The Cereal Box Saga", the author's two personal favorite storylines from that version.
    • The fourth chapter foreshadows the episodes "The Beast of Bayville" and "On Angel's Wings".
    • The sixth chapter more explicitly foreshadows "On Angel's Wings" when Xavier looks at a newspaper article talking about the Angel.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: Much like her brother Sabertooth, Clara has a powerful regenerative healing factor. Clara herself claims it’s not quite as powerful as Victor’s, but it’s still quite powerful in her own right.
  • Grievous Harm with a Body: During the battle against Bounty in chapters three and four, Fred tosses Pietro at Bounty.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Irene Adler goes for the Jack Daniel's when she gets a vision that Clara Creed has returned to Earth.
    • In the fourth chapter, Clara offers some Jack Daniel's to Principal Kelly after the X-Men and Brotherhood battled Bounty.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Like in the end of the episode "Growing Pains", the Brotherhood still cause damage to Bayville High's soccer field, but here it's not because they wanted to show off their powers, but because the Brotherhood's brawl with Bounty ended up going to the soccer field.
  • Meaningful Name: In the Night of the Daemons storyline, the Brotherhood travel to a fictional village in Scotland called Dreagmore. The name comes from the word dreagag, the Scottish Gaelic word for "meteorite". The storyline centers around a meteorite that is believed to have magical properties.
  • Mythology Gag: In chapter nine, Ronnie Rocker gives the X-Men masks to better hide their identities. Jean's is yellow with two points, as a nod to her 1960s green mini-dress costume.
    • In chapter eleven, Jubilee gains her iconic yellow overcoat and shades from the comics.
  • Named by the Adaptation: This story likes to give full names to characters that never got one in the comics. For example, in one of the flash-forwards, the Devil-Hunter is revealed to be named John Gabriel. The comics had gone back and forth on whether Gabriel was the Devil-Hunter's first or last name, but his early appearances established he had a wife named Andrea Gabriel, hence why Gabriel is his surname in this story.
    • In chapter nine, First Line member Positron is given the surname Grier in this story, as a nod to actress Pam Grier. Another First Line member, Firefall, is also given the name Tandy Waihe'e. In that same chapter, the bully that bothered Kurt and Rogue in the beginning of the episode "Operation: Rebirth" is given a name: Ethan Meyer.
    • In Chapter 15, Captains Manhattan and Brooklyn are established to be named respectively Gary Hernandez and Thomas Mancini. Their comic counterparts were unnamed.
    • In Chapter 16, Star Sign is given the name Lisa Leialoha.
  • Older Than They Look: Clara Creed looks like she is in her 30s, but she was revealed to have helped defend Canada in WWII, several decades before the events of this story. This is because she has a regenerative healing factor like her brother Victor "Sabertooth" Creed.
    • One of the flashbacks to 1981 in chapter 9 reveals that First Line members Black Fox and Firefall also have slowed aging. Black Fox due to being exposed to the chronal energies of an unseen villain called the Chronobreaker in the 1940s, and Firefall due to her being related to Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes.
  • Original Character: Paul and Craig Starr debuted in chapter one. In the Phantazia of the Rock Opera storyline, the X-Men join forces with another original superhero character: Kid Razor.
    • Chapter 6 introduces Roger Gruenwald, a Bayville High student.
  • Punny Name: Chapter seven begins a storyline called "Phantazia of the Rock Opera".
  • Race Lift: Lila Cheney in this fic is British-Indian, whereas she is white in the comics.
    • First Line member Firefall's race was unknown in the comics as she was never shown as having any kind of human form. In fact, Marvel: The Lost Generation implied she might not even be human, due to her being shown to have green skin and pointed ears. In this story, she's Native Hawaiian.
    • In the comics, Captain Manhattan was presumably a white man. In this story, he's Latino.
  • Sherlock Scan: Sort of. Craig Starr is able to blast Pietro in the foot with his eye laser due to his calculating where the speedster is going to go.
  • Shout-Out: In chapter four, Craig Starr describes Bounty as the lovechild of Samus Aran and the yautja.
  • Spirit Advisor: As shown in the Phantazia of the Rock Opera storyline, the ghost of deceased rockstar Ronnie Rocker is this to Kid Razor.
  • Team Mom: Clara Creed quickly puts herself in this position to the Brotherhood after she crashes at their doorstep.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Scott has this reaction when he learns from Lance that Clara is Sabertooth's sister.
Scott: ...sister?! That man has relatives?
  • Wrench Wench: Lila plays this role when it comes to maintaining the spaceship.
