Echo Ranger 1 and Echo Ranger 2

The Echo Ranger is a Crossover Fanfic by Xavon Wrentaile, between My Hero Academia and Power Rangers.

One day after school, Izuku Midoriya is running away from Katsuki Bakugou and his cronies, and ends up hiding in an antique store. After the owner scares the bullies away, the Quirkless boy takes a look around and finds himself drawn to a very strange coin, which shows three diferent sides when flipped at random: a dragon, a tiger, and a brachiosaurus. Intrigued, he ends up buying the coin and taking it home. A couple nights after, when he falls asleep, he discovers that the coin is the last legacy of the heroes that preceeded the Quirks almost two centuries ago, the Power Rangers, whose deeds have faded into obscurity to the point most people no longer think they actually existed, save for a few select True Believers, including Izuku. The coin brings him into contact with an AI based on the most legendary among the Power Rangers, Tommy Oliver, who now takes it up to train him and make him a hero like he always dreamed to be.

Meanwhile in the middle of the Pacific ocean on I Island, Melissa Shield detects a spike in Morphin Grid energy in Japan. The daughter of David Shield and descendant of another Power Ranger, she has studied the Ranger's history extensively (and is another True Believer) and decides to investigate. This brings Melissa into contact her father's old friend and former partner, the Number One Hero All Might, who coincidentally is also a True Believer in the Power Rangers. Their destinies will all become intertwined, as they form a new team of Power Rangers to combat an evil threat that's been lurking in the shadows for over two centuries now.

An ongoing translation to Spanish can be found here.

The Echo Ranger provides examples of:

  • Abled in the Adaptation: With Rita and Zedd's help, All Might is completely cured of his injuries inflicted by All for One and restored to the prime of his power.
  • Absurdly Sharp Blade: The Tiger Saber in Mode White, is a sword capable of cutting through just about anything.
  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Zigzagged with Izuku, who does not gain One for All in this story, instead gaining a Power Coin that combines the remnants of Tommy's Green, White and Black Ranger powers. The coin gives him a small boost to his physical capacities by default, and he slowly begins to grow stronger thanks to Tommy's martial arts training.
    • Melissa was just a Gadgeteer Genius with no combat training in My Hero Academia: Two Heroes. In this story, she has some martial arts training at the start while also being a skilled gymnast (just like her ancestor Kimberly before her).
  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Melissa Shield shows up while Izuku is still in Aldera and becomes one of the main characters.
    • During the entrance exam practical, Izuku saves Kaminari Denki, Kaibara Sen, and Hatsume Mei (twice).
  • Adaptation Name Change:
    • Melissa Shield gets a minor one. She is given the middle name Kimberly, as part of her connection to her ancestor Kimberly Ann Hart.
    • Also done with Rita, whose middle name is Fienna, the name of her mother in the comics.
    • Pony Tsunotori's name is changed to Marion in this story.
  • Adaptation Relationship Overhaul:
    • Izuku and Melissa. In canon they spent a few days together; Izuku found Melissa attractive, she found him interesting. It didn't go any further and Melissa didn't appear again in the story. Here, they meet earlier, Melissa moves to Japan, and the two become a couple.
    • Izuku and Bakugou. In canon, Izuku continues to treat Bakugou as a friend despite the latter's obvious hatred and bullying, although they do manage to patch things somewhat along the way. In this story, the two slowly drift apart as Izuku trains under Tommy's guidance, to the point he stops seeing Bakugou as a friend in a few months and is barely on speaking terms with him by the time they enter the UA.
  • Added Alliterative Appeal: While contemplating how to fight Izuku, Katherine hadn't "factored for her frequently forgotten fifth feline form."
  • The Ageless: In Chapter 17, Karone appears as a middle-aged woman, despite being over two centuries old. She reveals that while the humans from KO-35 usually live around 260 years, something that Ecliptor or Dark Specter did to her when she was Astronema caused her aging to slow down and eventually stop altogether.
  • Armor-Piercing Response: During the Hero History class, Izuku asks Advisory why they're not covering the Power Rangers. Advisory, who doesn't believe the Rangers were real, replies that she doesn't cover "urban legends" in her class, to which Izuku points out that the textbook makes an explicit reference to "the Shadow over the Rising Sun", another supposed "urban legend", which leaves Advisory unable to reply to him.
  • Ascended Extra: Melissa has barely appeared in My Hero Academia outside of the Two Heroes movie, mostly getting indirectly referenced by other characters. Here she is one of the two leads and a becomes a UA student before Izuku does.
  • Ascended Fanboy: Izuku is a two-fold example, since he does admire All Might and Pro Heroes like in canon, but he's also a huge fan of the Power Rangers, and one of the few who still believes they were real.
  • Battle Couple: After Melissa successfully creates a second Echo Power Coin, she and Izuku get to have their first fight together as Rangers against Shadow Psycho Pink in Chapters 14-15.
  • Beach Episode: A portion of chapter 11 has the Izuku, Melissa, Toshinori, Nezu, Rhian, Aleia, Ori, and Madison at a beach in swimsuits. Officially they are testing the newly completed training room (basically a Holodeck) while talking about what the magic team will bring to the Power Coin creation. The beach was chosen so they can relax while talking and push the room to its limits. But Rhian says it is also because Melissa wants to wear a bikini in front of Izuku after hearing about Yaoyorozu's Hero costume.
  • Bifurcated Weapon: Mode Green's two Dragon Daggers can be combined into the Dragon Blaster.
  • Big Damn Heroes: All Might is being overwhelmed by Nomu, Psycho Pink, and Stheno. He is about to do something desperate. Izuku and Melissa arrive, stun Stheno and knock Nomu and Psycho Pink back. This draws the Shadow away and gives All Might time to get free.
  • Birds of a Feather: Izuku and Melissa have this dynamic. Both are Quirkless teenagers who admire heroes and among the few True Believers of the Power Rangers. They also descend from families of Rangers (though Izuku was unaware of this at first) and they both have a great drive to be heroes to help people. Both also have a tendency to break into mumbling when they get excited about something.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman: All Might learns martial arts from Izuku, both as part of All Might's rehabilitation after his injury is healed, and because Tommy feels having Izuku train All Might and Melissa will help Izuku cement the teen's own training.
  • Brain Uploading: Part, but not all, of how AI Tommy was created. This was done voluntarily, and didn't hurt or kill the original Tommy.
  • Canon Welding:
    • Welding Super Sentai to Power Rangers: the Wind and Thunder Ninja schools from Power Rangers Ninja Storm are descendants of the Dai clan from Gosei Sentai Dairanger, recruited by Ninjor and moved to California to guard the Abyss of Evil. The Squadron Rangers in the story are mostly the same as the Dairangers, except having a Black Ranger like the comics instead of a White Ranger (due to how Dairangers was adapted to Power Rangers Season 2). The modern descendants of the Squadron Rangers that appear in the story are also based on the comics version of the Squadron Rangers.
    • Welding Power Rangers to My Hero Academia: The big bad who cut Earth off from the Morphin' Grid and thus eliminated the Rangers' powers, inadvertently created Quirks.
  • Chest Insignia: Izuku's Ranger forms have a chest insignia on the chest armor that changes depending on which mode is active, matching the symbol in their respective original Power Coins. Thus, Mode Green has the Dragon Coin, Mode White the White Tiger Coin, and Mode Black the Black Brachio Coin. Zigzagged in that Melissa's Ranger form does not have this feature.
  • The Chosen One: Zigzagged. The Echo Coin wasn't looking for Izuku specifically. Just someone with certain qualities that Izuku happened to have. But also Invoked. One of those qualities was being Quirkless. And so Izuku chooses to believe that he was born Quirkless so the Echo Coin could choose him.
  • Clingy MacGuffin: The Echo Morpher seems to be one. Izuku goes to bed with the Echo Power Coin under his pillow. He wakes up wearing a watch he doesn't recognize. A watch with no clip, snaps, or other means to attach or detach it. So far in the story he has not tried (onscreen) to take it off, but has mentioned he couldn't revert it to Coin form.
  • Color-Coded Secret Identity: Zigzagged somewhat. Most of the time Izuku and Melissa are in their UA uniforms. Each of them also has multiple Ranger colors. That said, when they are out of uniform, they do tend to wear one or more of those colors. The same also applies the the four leaders of the Dai Clan that have appeared on screen.
  • Continuity Cameo: The redeemed, Human versions of Lord Zedd and Rita, briefly seen at the end of Power Rangers In Space, appear in the first three chapters. Zedd gives Izuku the Echo Ranger Power Coin. Rita heals All Might. Then, their responsibility discharged, they leave Earth to investigate the rest of the galaxy and potentially take a vacation.
  • Crossover Relatives: Izuku is a descendant of the Black family of the Dai Clan, specifically Xev, the Black Squadron Ranger. Melissa Kimberly Shield is a descendant of Kimberly Ann Hart.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: All Might struggled against Nomu, Psycho Pink, and Stheno. After the Rangers knock out Stheno and draw Psycho Pink away, All Might is able to play with Nomu, to test its limits and figure out if it has any intelligence or self-control. Once All Might is satisfied Nomu isn't a sapient being, he takes it out in one hit.
  • Curse Cut Short: During the battle against Shadow Psycho Pink, after she assumes her monster form, Melissa says "You are one ugly motherf..." before being cut off by Psycho Pink attacking with her tentacles. Word of God says that Melissa was about to say "motherflora", though.
  • Damn You, Muscle Memory!: Izuku berates himself for almost using an illegal block during his spar with Melissa in Chapter 13, since they're practicing different fighting styles.
  • Deducing the Secret Identity: Tommy is able to figure out that Toshinori is All Might since they have the same height, hair, eyes, facially features when adjusted for mass and musculature, and even thought their voices sound different they are the same. He also points out that a Quirk suddenly adding a bunch of muscle to Toshninori's skinny frame is nothing compared to transformation Ryukyu or Godzillo undergo.
  • Defiant to the End: After the Rangers add the final blow on Psycho Pink, she apologizes to her mother for being unable to defy Demonus. When Izuku asks if that means Demonus is still alive, Psycho Pink just says "Who knows?" sarcastically and dies.
  • Distracted by the Sexy: Invoked by Momo during her fight against Kaminari in the Sports Festival. She unzips her jacket and leaves it open, and takes her chance to knock him out while he's ogling her.
  • Dream Weaver: The Echo Morpher and the AI copy of Tommy Oliver within it, are able to shape Izuku's dreams. Tommy does this to teach Izuku martial arts and have Izuku fight Putties, Cogs, and various other mooks.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: In the first chapter, Izuku doesn't connect his Coin or watch to the Power Rangers, despite being a huge fan. He also doesn't recognize AI Tommy until he introduces himself. Possibly justified in that the Rangers have been gone for 218 years at that point, and were mostly active in California (only five of the fourteen Earth teams were not in So Cal, and only two of those were in Japan), so Izuku wasn't expecting to find a Power Coin in an antique store he ducked into at random.
  • Elaborate Underground Base: All Might converts his basement into the Echo Command Center. It isn't terribly large, consisting of a war room with a super computer capable of housing and projecting AI Tommy, a large locker room, a working Holodeck (without the replicators to create real food), and has seven micro fusion reactors to power everything.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Downplayed with Bakugou, who in Chapter 18 at least shows to have some morals about "never hurting extras", as he wants to follow All Might's example, and seems to feel some remorse when he accidentally hits Uraraka in the head during their bout in the Sports Festival. However, he instead redirects the blame to Izuku for bringing her all the way there.
  • Evil Plan: Demonus has a plan to convert all the Humans on Earth into Power Rangers style monsters, loyal only to him. When the Rangers interfere, the process is slowed down, instead resulting the the birth of Quirks. What he has planned for the rest of the universe with an army of eight billion elite minions is undisclosed, but is enough to make Shigaraki Tomura weep for joy.
  • Exact Words: When the press is threatened by Nezu with getting their access credentials for the UA revoked (which includes their special events and festivals) if they continue harassing the students for interviews, one of the reporters points out that he didn't extend that to the teachers themselves. A bunch of eyes immediately fall on Nezu and Present Mic.
  • Facepalm:
    • In Chapter 14, Kamui Woods and a police officer facepalm together when Izuku suggests they use mirrors or flashlights to send Morse code signals. note
    • Happens twice in chapter 16. Advisory does the nose pinch version when she realizes she just handed Izuku a perfect argument in their verbal debate. And All Might does the more classic version when Melissa references Pokémon to summon her Zord.
  • First Kiss: In chapter 7, Melissa apologizes to Izuku for taking so long to respond to his confession and confirms she loves him too. When Izuku initially doesn't respond, she worries that he changed his mind or moved on. He silences her doubts by kissing her. Given it is not only their first kiss as a couple, but their respective first kisses ever, they both admit it was pretty bad. But that they are both very interested in practicing until they get better at it.
  • Fling a Light into the Future: Following the Shadow War, Tommy suspected that things weren't over yet, and so created the Echo Coin combining his Green, White and Black Ranger powers as a way draw energy from the Morphin' Grid. He gave the coin to Zedd and Rita for safekeeping until it had recharged enough to be usable and found someone worthy of becoming a Power Ranger.
  • Foreign Exchange Student: Melissa counts as one, as she decides to transfer to the UA in Japan in order to continue her Ranger project and be close to Izuku on top of it.
  • The Four Gods: The Pink Squadron Ranger had the Genbu Zord. Word of God says the Red Squadron Ranger had the Seiryu Zord, and Squadron Yellow had the Suzaku Zord. There was no Byakko Zord (for obvious reasons), the other three were the Black Kitsune Zord, the Blue Kirin Zord, and the Green Nekomata Zord.
  • Freudian Slip: When Melissa is talking to Nezu about her future plans, she suggests "Mido... Shield Melissa" may be known as a support item maker.
  • From Hero to Mentor: A borderline case; the original Tommy Oliver was a hero. The AI based on him is a mentor. But there are hints the the AI is more than just a copy and code.
  • Fun with Acronyms: The owner of the antique store where Izuku finds the Echo Coin is Zachery Edwin Davis Dulles.
  • Get It Over With: When the Rangers defeat Psycho Pink, she demands they finish her.
  • Grew a Spine: Thanks to Tommy's advice and training, Izuku quickly grows to stand up to Bakugou, to the point he no longer sees the latter as a friend after a couple months. He also makes a point of adressing him by surname instead of "Kacchan" and also refuses to answer to being called "Deku".
  • Halloween Episode: Not a full chapter, but in chapter seven Izuku and Melissa take the kids from Izuku's apartment building out trick or treating. Izuku dresses as the Green Zeo Ranger (for the third year) and Melissa as a half-Vulcan Starfleet captain. They run into Bakugou and his cronies.
  • Has a Type: When All Might reveals that Rhian has/had a crush on Carter Grayson, Izuku remarks that she probably has a thing for tall blondes.
  • Home Base: The Yagi building; the basement is the Echo Command Center. The first floor the Yagi Agency, the cover for All Might's civilian identity. And the second floor is Toshinori's apartment, where he and Melissa live, making it literally a home base.
  • Heroic BSoD: All Might brings an attractive girl (Melissa Shield) to meet Izuku, who immediately has a crush on her. Then All Might introduces her, and Izuku realizes she is an online friend he is incredibly attracted to. Then Melissa's scanners detect the Grid Energy around Izuku and she blurts out his secret, that he is a Power Ranger. At which point, according to the narration "Izuku_EXE suffered a memory leak and system fault, and needed to restart."
  • Hour of Power: Tommy explains to Izuku that the Ranger powers require great physical condition and training in order to stay morphed for long periods of time. By the time he enters the UA, Izuku is able to stay morphed for about three hours on average in either mode. Once Melissa manages to create a second Echo coin for herself, she's able to stay morphed for about one hour when she uses it in combat for the first time.
  • Humongous Mecha: Izuku and Melissa get to pilot Zords for the first time in Chapter 16 with a game of tag as a test run. Izuku pilots a Tigerzord, while Melissa has the Terrapin Tank.
  • I Never Said It Was Poison: Izuku figures out that Telos is misleading him when Telos uses the family name 'Yagi', when Izuku has only called their guardian 'Toshinori'.
  • Insistent Terminology: Whenever someone calls Izuku a Power Ranger, he tacks on "in training". At least when he doesn't try to deny it.
  • Intangibility: The Shadows of previous enemies of the Rangers are able to phase through almost all kinds of attacks, making them dangerous even for heroes like All Might himself. They can only be harmed by Ranger powers (or Morphin Grid technology and weapons, even if they're not used by Rangers), magic, high-voltage electricity or extreme heat.
  • I Resemble That Remark!: When Izuku is explaining the general rules in the Sports Festival, he cites that the first event usually has a rule against interfering with the other competitors, finishing with "It is to see how good you are, not how much of a bully you can be". Bakugou immediately goes from grinning to scowling at that remark.
  • Jumped at the Call: Melissa didn't just jump at The Call. She found The Call's number, and called The Call herself. Luckily for her, The Call answered.note
  • Last-Second Word Swap:
    • When Izuku asks Rita and Zedd if it's true they made monsters out of purses, he almost calls it "silly", before switching to "unlikely" to avoid being disrespectful.
    • In Chapter 16, while explaining the rules about the use of support items in the Sports Festival, he almost cites Aoyama as an example, before switching to Advisory instead. Some of the students do catch on what he was about to say, though.
  • Let's Fight Like Gentlemen: During his first bout in the fighting tournament, Izuku challenges Nekotora to a duel, meaning that he'll fight unmorphed while she fights using only her panther form, so they can have a more or less evenly matched fight.
  • Little Bit Beastly: Nekotora Katherine, aka Manx, has a Quirk that allows her to turn into a Cat Girl this with five different motifs at choice: a tiger, a lion, a cheetah, an ocelot, or a panther. Her ears shift into the top of the head while her hair turns into the pattern of the respective chosen feline, her hands turn into paws and she sprouts a tail from behind.
  • Logical Weakness: Heavily discussed when the Shadow of Psycho Pink attacks the mall. Tommy explains that the original Psycho Rangers were practically invincible if fought one-on-one against their respective counterparts. However, they could be beaten through teamwork since they're obsessed with destroying their counterparts and also prone to betray each other for their own benefit. Izuku and Melissa exploit this to get her away from All Might and defeat her with coordinated teamwork and combined attacks.
  • Loophole Abuse:
    • Nezu exploits this in order to allow Izuku and Melissa to help All Might during the attack on Kashyyyk Mall (as they're the only ones capable of hurting Shadow Psycho Pink), citing the fact that, since the Ranger Powers are not actually Quirks, they're not subjected to the Quirk regulation laws.
    • During the Sports Festival, the rules in the first event explicitly forbid the participants from attacking others. Izuku realizes that there's no rule forbidding them from helping others to reach the finish line together, which he does by teaming up with Uraraka and Todoroki.
  • Love Redeems: Zedd mentions that, unlike Rita, he wasn't born human, and thus he shouldn't have been purified by the Z-Wave. However, he had grown to love her genuinely, enough to give him a chance to live happily with her.
  • The Magic Goes Away: Actually magic is still around, but it is much weaker. The Morphin' Grid went away and with it the Rangers' powers and any Grid based tech stopped working. Now the Grid is starting to come back, but is still only at a tiny fraction of its full power. So the new Rangers are weaker and more limited than their predecessors.
  • Make My Monster Grow: According to Word of God in Chapter 15, Demonus' method to make giant monsters will be fusing Shadows with MHA Villains.
  • The Man Behind the Man: Demonus, the last villain the Power Rangers faced before disappearing, is this for both All for One and Shigaraki Tomura.
  • Master of None: Nekotora considers her panther form to be the weakest overall, compared to the rest, as it increases her physical capacities, but not as much as her more specialized ones, and it's better suited for stealth rather than fighting.
  • Mayfly–December Romance: Karone reveals in Chapter 17 that Andros and Ashley got married, but the former outlived the latter, due to their differences in lifespans and despite occassionally going to Aquitar for treatment.
  • Middle School Is Miserable: Notably averted, compared to My Hero canon. While Izuku's first two years (offscreen) at Aldera were miserable, gaining the Echo Morpher early in his third year makes it much better. Just having the Morpher is a dream come true. Also, it gives him an immediate physical boost allowing him to avoid the bullies. Which only gets easier as he works out and Tommy teaches Izuku both martial arts and how to deal with the bullies. The Morpher also makes him fluent in English, making his studies easier. And finally, he gains a real friends in Toshinori and Melissa, with the latter being his girlfriend for the last third of the school year. Safe to say Izuku's last year of middle school was one of the best years to date of his life.
  • Mr. Exposition: AI Tommy was basically made for this. He tells Izuku and their allies about the history of the Rangers, how their powers work, or any other information that was lost in the last 200+ years.
  • Multiform Balance: Izuku's three Ranger forms have each a stronger point and access to different weapons: Mode Green has speed and two Dragon Daggers that can combine together into a blaster gun; Mode White has raw strength and offensive power, with the Tiger Saber being capable of cutting through almost anything; and Mode Black is the most balanced but also has the strongest defense, having the Brachio Staff as a long-ranged melee weapon (and later Izuku manages to partially unlock invisibility powers).
    • Melissa's two Ranger forms are this as well, both personally and with Izuku's forms. Her Mode Yellow is generally balanced, but uses a bow as a weapon, making it the teams' dedicated ranged attacker. And her Mode Blue fights with a mace and shield, making it the best defensive mode, even compared to Izuku's Mode Black.
    • For a non-Ranger example, Nekotora Katherine's Quirk, Felidae, allows her to take traits of five different felines: tiger (physically strongest), cheetah (fastest), lion (balanced), ocelot (good for climbing, jumping, and fitting into smaller spaces), and panther (good for stealth).
  • Mutually Exclusive Magic: Ranger powers won't work for anyone with a Quirk. It is speculated that combining them might result in a destructive overpowering of the user. It may have something to do with the Rangers-type villain responsible for Quirks calling himself the anti-Ranger. In the end, Power Coins/Morphers refuse to activate for a Quirk user, so reasons are harder to investigate and results are unknown.
  • My Greatest Failure: Tommy feels this about failing to fully stop Demonus, costing Earth its Rangers and its connection to the rest of the universe.
  • Named by the Adaptation: As of this writing, All for One's given name has yet to be revealed in canon. In this story, his given name is Endo.
  • Not That Kind of Doctor: Stated indirectly:
Izuku: The best ice cream in the prefecture. It's a hot day, and I have to treat myself occasionally. Doctor's orders.
Melissa: You do remember he's a doctor of paleontology, right?
Izuku: Doesn't matter, if it means I get to have a double scoop cone every other week.
    Melissa: Your logic is sound.
  • Official Couple: Izuku and Melissa. It was pretty obvious from the outset that they were made for each other, and made to be Rangers.
  • Offscreen Romance: In the Kyoto Arc, Telos was planning to distract Toshinori with Rhian's sexy, but the opportunity was missed due to a monster attack dragging All Might away. And Rhian was mad. Eight months later when the Dai Clan shows up to help with Melissa's Power Coin, Rhian and Toshinori are calling each other by nicknames, she is very flirty with him, and Aleia notes that Rhian has been spending a lot of time in Tokyo.
  • Oh, Crap, There Are Fanfics of Us!: Rita and Zack are not fans of the Power Rangers True Believers website, partly because of the (in-universe) Epileptic Trees, but mostly because of the fan fiction. Especially the adult fan fiction.
  • Older Than They Look: Karone looks like she's in her late 30s or early 40s according to Izuku. She is somewhere around 260 years old, which is around the average life expectancy of a KO-35 Human. So while she should be an elderly person, she is not technically into a Really 700 Years Old territory yet.
  • One-Steve Limit: There has never been a Ranger in Power Rangers or Super Sentai named Melissa or Izuku.
  • Point of Divergence: Melissa Shield ends up transferring to UA, the year before Izuku starts. She finds flaws in UA's security as part of her classwork. UA closes those holes, and others found in testing. Aoyama Yuga is caught as the mole before they can hand the information to the League Of Villains. The mole is removed from UA. And the USJ attack doesn't happen. Though the League attacks Kashyyyk Mall instead.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Played for laughs and plot advancement instead of drama. Melissa forgets to tell All Might that she detected spike in the Morphin' Grid around Japan, and wants to investigate. As a result, All Might doesn't expect her to be carrying a bunch of scanners when he introduces her to Izuku, and Melissa immediately figures out that Izuku is a Power Ranger. Then, she forgets to tell Izuku that her plans have changed and instead of going back to I Island permanently, she is moving to Japan and is only returning to get her things and visit her father. Since Izuku thinks he will never see her again, he confesses.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Nezu and Tommy don't try to stop Izuku and Melissa from going to save All Might from Psycho Pink, even though it is arguably illegal. Tommy does give them suitable warning about the Shadow.
  • Recruit Teenagers with Attitude: Played with. Izuku is definitely a teen when he finds the Echo Coin. The main reason it chose Izuku was because he is Quirkless; Ranger powers and Quirks don't mix. It also picked Izuku for his "goodness, your purity, your desire to be a Hero and help people" according to Tommy. But Tommy tells Izuku he wasn't the first person with those qualities to pick up the Coin, just the first without a Quirk. Melissa makes her own Power Coin (with help) but still has to be chosen by it. Which it does. note
  • Redemption Demotion: Discussed. After being purified by the Z-Wave, Rita and Zedd lost most of their original powers. Rita's power was mostly purified, and merged with the purified half of Zedd's power to become the Mystic Mother, while the other half of Zedd's power that was still evil resulted in the existence of Thrax.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Both the main protagonists are descendants of Power Rangers. Izuku is a distant cousin of the Dai Clan's Black family, who are descendants of the Squadron Power Rangers, while Melissa descends from Kimberly Ann Hart, the original Mighty Morphin' Pink Ranger. Also, the Wind and Thunder Ninja academies of Power Rangers Ninja storm were created by branch family members of the Dai Clan (at Ninjor's request).
  • Relationship Upgrade: in chapter 4 Izuku admits to having a physical attraction to Melissa, who has just arrived in Japan, as well as a huge crush on her online persona. In chapter 6, thinking he might never see her again offline, he blurts out that he loves her. In chapter 7 (though four months later in universe) she reciprocates and they start dating. Then in chapter 12 (another four months later) she makes her Power Coin and becomes Izuku's full teammate as the second Echo Ranger.
  • Sarcastic Clapping: How the Shadow of Psycho Pink catches All Might's attention in Chapter 14, while the latter is fighting (and winning) against Nomu.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Izuku and Melissa tell Tommy and Nezu they are going to help All Might, even if their mentors tell them not to. Nezu was going to ask them to help anyway.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After All Might defeats Nomu, and the Psycho Pink's helmet falls from the upper level and shatters, the mooks participating in the Kashyyyk Mall attack start to run. Tesla throws his mask away and slips into the crowd. He opens the shutters to let the police in, but he keeps jamming the cameras, so he can't be identified as one of the Villains.
  • Secret Identity: Toshinori Yagi is supposed to be the secret identity of All Might. Except that Tommy figures out they are the same person the first time Izuku meets Toshinori. Toshinori tries to deny it, but comes clean to Izuku, Tommy, Rita, and Zedd after Rita heals his injury. Then when Melissa arrives for an extended visit, he tells her so she doesn't find out by accident note . And it turns out a certain clan of magical ninjas in Kyoto also know who he is.
  • Something Only They Would Say: Telos confirms that Izuku and company are True Believers when he calls Tommy 'Mister Oliver' and they immediately correct him that it is 'Doctor Oliver'. note
  • Stating the Simple Solution: Melissa and Nezu dismiss pressing her new Power Coin, due to not knowing a material that will survive as the press. Izuku reminds them that they have a piece of Zord armor, and that the government's best efforts couldn't scratch or melt it. He then goes on to suggest that he can cut out the three dies (one tails and two heads) with his Tiger Saber, causing the scientists to realize they've been treating the Coins as two dimensional, when they are three dimensional. Those two points allow Melissa and Nezu to complete the process to make the second Echo Coin.
  • Super Wrist-Gadget: The Echo Morphers. In their passive form, they are fashionable watches that can show the time, receive text messages, and monitor the users' vital signs (including blood toxicity). It's implied they also have other smart watch functions. And, of course, they can transform the wearer into a spandex wearing, super powered warrior of justice.
  • That Came Out Wrong: During their spar in Chapter 13, Melissa asks to go another round in sparring since she wants a chance to get much closer to Izuku. He replies "I'd love for you to get closer to me," and he takes a few seconds to realize the implications. Melissa actually takes it up and suggestively offers to do a Judo match before they realize they're running late.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Izuku and Melissa. Both of them get into better shape and learn martial arts for their role as Power Rangers. And then gain super physical abilities, special weapons, and control of giant robots once they are able to transform.
  • Transformation Sequence: Chapter 3 describes Izuku's Morphin' sequence from All Might's point of view.
  • Transformation Trinket: Wouldn't be Power Rangers without these. Izuku has the Echo Morpher, based on Tommy's original Master Morpher (albeit wrist-mounted instead of the original belt buckles), and Melissa later manages to combine the ones given to her by Rita and Telos into a single working Morpher for her new hybrid Echo Coin.
  • Translator Microbes: A limited example. After the Echo Morpher activates, Izuku finds he is fluent in English, spoken and written, and has a southern California accent, not a Japanese accent.
  • Trust Password: For All Might to trust that Izuku is really a Ranger and Tommy is his mentor, he asks who the Neo Pink Ranger was. Tommy, of course, knows it was Kimberly, and All Might also knows thanks to Melissa letting it slip when she was younger.
  • Virtual Ghost: Izuku is mentored by an AI copy of Tommy Oliver.
