Fanfic / The Chaotic Masters

Go To

The Chaotic Masters is a Massive Multiplayer Crossover fic by D_rissing and nightmaster000.

Long ago, three beings of immense power rampaged across the world, until finally an alliance of heroic forces sealed them away. But in the modern day, one of them manages to escape his imprisonment, and becomes determined to free his brothers-in-arms. Now the world's heroes and villains alike will have to brace themselves for the new coming age of chaos.

Tropes

  • Adaptation Origin Connection: When introduced at Roulette's auction, it's revealed that the Magic Mirror was created by the Collector, as was Lumalee (apparently he thought the idea of a cheerfully nihilistic Luma was hilarious).
  • Adaptational Location Change:
    • Both Jackie Chan Adventures and Teen Titans (2003) now take place in San Fransokyo instead of San Francisco and Jump City, respectively.
    • Rather than being a separate world, Meridian is an archipelago in Northern Europe, between Germany, Denmark, and Sweden.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • As noted under Fallen Hero, the Chaotic Masters had a habit during their original reign of seducing heroic women into joining their harems and acting as enforcers after they destroyed their own kingdoms, including Jasmine, Snow White, Cinderella, Megara, Rapunzel, Merida, and Mulan.
    • Most of the Guardians of Kandrakar are devout practitioners of Chaostism, as is Irma's mother Anna, and they all influence Elyon towards sharing their worship instead of siding with her mother's reforms, which would outlaw the religion.
  • Admiring the Abomination: When Baron Von Steamer bursts into Fred's Bro-Tillion, Entraptra is more focused on gushing over his drill and other steampunk technology than the fact that he's attacking the party.
  • Affectionate Nickname:
    • Sonata refers to Monkey King as her "funny monkey".
    • The Collector called Kimiko "firecracker" back when they were friends in the latter's childhood, and in the present refers to Raven as "pretty bird".
  • The Alliance: According to the Collector, he and his brothers-in-arms were only defeated in ancient times by the combined powers of King Arthur and his knights, Merlin, Toshimiru the Mystical Monkey master, Nabu, the remnants of the Order of Guardians, Grand Master Dashi and his students, a member of the Dragon Council, and possibly other members not aforementioned.
  • Ancient Tradition: Well, not quite "ancient", but from the end of World War II until a few years before the story's present when it fell out of their possession, Kimiko's family was tasked with safeguarding the mirror that the Collector was sealed in.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism:
    • Despite being a sorceress superhero, Raven at first refuses to believe Jade's stories of her family's adventures fighting criminals, demons and wizards. The Collector and Monkey King both later independently deduce that she just doesn't want to admit that all this was happening without her knowing about it.
    • Perfuma comes from a kingdom with a society built on magic, but still struggles with the idea of a school for villains like HIVE.
  • Auction of Evil: In Chapter 14, Viper brings Jade along as she infiltrates an auction of magical artifacts hosted by Roulette, Circe, and Vanessa Barone, which Robin also infiltrates alongside Zatanna and Constantine, and which Aqualad infiltrates for his own reasons. Aside from them, every other attendant is a villain, including but not limited to Jinx, the Dazzlings, the Penguin, Ra's al Ghul, Xanatos, Demona, Daolon Wong, and Alastor the Radio Demon.
  • Batman Gambit:
    • After his initial Wounded Gazelle Gambit fails, the Collector resorts to hitting Raven's Berserk Button until he provokes her into attacking his Living Shadow form, after luring her into a position where the attack would hit Starfire and spill her blood on his mirror to free him. Fortunately, Gogo intervenes and knocks the mirror out of the way in time.
    • During Roulette's auction, Xanatos keeps making bids on artifacts he doesn't actually want, counting on the people who do to raise their bids even higher, draining their available funds so that they'll be less likely to bid on the items that he does want. Jade and Viper clue in on this, and do the same to ensure that Wong keeps getting outbid by everyone else whenever he tries to bid on anything.
  • Been There, Shaped History:
    • The Chaotic Masters evidently caused the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, and created Mts. Everest and Kilimanjaro, among other things they did for fun over the centuries.
    • The Knights of Entropy, the Meridian-based militant order of the Chaostism religion, have been secretly influencing events in other parts of the world for centuries. For instance, they are confirmed to have caused the Great Fire of London, and are also suspected to have been involved in Frollo's actions, as well as the French Revolution and rise of Napoleon.
  • Big Bad Ensemble:
    • On the one hand, there's the Chaotic Masters, who are trying to break free and resume rampaging for fun. On the other, there's Tirek the Devourer, who engineers their escapes so that he can use the situation to further his own agenda of corrupting Raven into freeing their father.
    • And as a result of the crossover setting, there's numerous other villains running around outside the main plot — Wuya is accelerating her plans to regain her body out of fear of the Masters' return, Monkey Fist and Drakken team up to steal the Miraculous to buy their way into the Masters' service, and Daolon Wong is still carrying out his canonical plot to steal the powers of the Talismans.
  • Big Bad Wannabe: Monkey Fist calls out Drakken for being such a joke that Kim and Ron only bother with him because Shego is an actual threat.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Big Hero 6 make their entrance into the story by swooping in to save Jade just as the Monkey King attempts to drop her off the roof of a building.
  • Big "NO!": Aquaman's reaction when it's suggested that there's no legal way to get Aqualad out of the trouble he gets into over what happened at the auction.
  • Big "WHAT?!":
    • The Dazzlings' shared reaction when they realize most of the items at Roulette's auction were items that their fellow Brides of Chaos entrusted to Meridian for safekeeping, and which Meridian's rulers have since tried to get rid of.
    • The other Titans' reaction when Robin reveals that both Jade and Aqualad are separately attending Roulette's auction.
    • The reaction of most of the attendees at the auction when they hear that the Chaotic Masters are returning.
    • Three in Chapter 17 — two from Uncle and Jackie as they get details about the auction, and one from Constantine when he hears about Madame Mim being on the loose.
  • Black-and-White Morality: Omi is called out for having this by Raimundo, who states that things are hardly ever as simple as people being all good or all bad like Omi believes.
  • Both Sides Have a Point: When arguing about why Uncle has never even considered teaching Jade magic, he says it's because she's too impulsive to be trusted with that kind of knowledge. And while he does cite some canonical incidents that support his point pretty well, it's also fairly strongly indicated that he's projecting some unrelated past incident onto the situation, causing him to unfairly judge Jade's capacity.
  • Broken Pedestal: Raven was a personal hero of Jade's right up until they met, at which point Raven's dismissive attitude (due to seeing Jade as too immature to properly use magic) grates on her nerves until Jade sees her as just another Jerkass looking down on her.
  • Brought Down to Badass: As part of their sealing, each of the Chaotic Masters had part of their power stripped and sealed separately in a set of Shen Gong Wu specifically crafted for that purpose. Despite this, they are still borderline Physical Gods more than capable of handling entire teams of superheroes on their own.
  • Canon Welding:
    • San Fransokyo takes the place of both the version of San Francisco that the Chans live in, as well as Jump City.
    • Kai Ching, Uncle's one-episode rival shop owner, is revealed to be a servant of Tirek, and by extension, Trigon.
    • The Chaotic Masters created Jusenkyo, mostly for the fun of seeing the effects the cursed springs would have on people.
    • Several Shen Gong Wu were designed specifically to siphon off some of the Chaotic Masters’ power. To date, the only confirmed one is the Monkey Staff for the Monkey King.
    • Similarly, the Lotus Blade was also created to face the Monkey King.
    • Meridian also takes elements and characters from the Boiling Isles and Etheria.
  • Civilization Destroyer: The Chaotic Masters destroyed multiple ancient kingdoms back in the day, including Camelot, Agrabah, Corona, and Arendelle, usually by corrupting their princesses into their brides and getting their help in doing so.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: It's noted that Adagio is the most jealous of the Collector's wives, and she doesn't like him getting closer to Raven as a result.
  • Cordon Bleugh Chef: The Collector respects Madame Mim as a mother figure, but states that no one should be forced to eat her cooking.
  • The Corrupter: The Chaotic Masters are clearly quite skilled at getting into people's heads and getting them to switch sides, as evidenced by all the princesses they managed to seduce back in the day. And now the Collector is doing the same with Raven, playing on her desperation to escape her destiny by offering to help her control her powers to such the point that Trigon can't use her.
  • Crossover Relatives:
    • The human world version of Tirek is a demon son of Trigon, making him Raven's half-brother.
    • The Blights are descended from Varian.
    • Entraptra brags about being descended from Mechanicles.
    • Mr. Sparkles is the son of Mad Mod.
    • Owen Burnett/Puck is the father of Jinx, and apparently she and Glimmer are sisters.
    • Madame Mim turns out to have been the Masters' adoptive mother.
  • Deliberate Values Dissonance: It turns out that part of the ancient traditions practiced by chi wizards is that only men are allowed to learn it.
  • Disaster Dominoes: This is what ultimately triggers the huge fight at Roulette's auction — after Aqualad's fight with security in the vault over the Trident of Triton spills onto the show floor, everyone else goes on edge, including the moth palisman that Jade just bought. Desperate to get out of its cage and get to Jade to defend her, it manipulates causality to cause an electrical short near Aqualad that startles him into launching an attack, which in turn causes a string of more startled attacks from other attendees, ultimately resulting in a brawl as well as freeing the palisman in the process.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": Jinx furiously rebukes her father when he calls her by her birth name "Jennifer".
  • Dragon Rider: When Mulan was corrupted by the Masters, she brought Mushu along with her, and the Masters altered him to give him the ability to alter his size like Dojo, allowing him to act as transportation for them and their brides.
  • The Dreaded:
    • Given their sheer power and totally impulsive natures, the Chaotic Masters are rightfully feared by everyone who knows of them, except those dedicated to their service.
    • Even the Masters themselves are wary of Madame Mim, who was apparently their adoptive mother.
  • Dude, Where's My Respect?:
    • Jade really wishes she and her family could get recognition for all their heroics, which makes it more hurtful for her when Raven persists in not believing her about her adventures, and why she's so happy when the Big Hero 6 do believe her. She also turns out to have a lot of resentment towards Uncle for refusing to teach her magic despite her natural talent, which turns to outright anger when she finds out that he never even considered her as a student because he views her impulsiveness as proof that she's not worthy.
    • Wuya is enraged to learn that an almanac of ancient evils doesn't even mention her, even as it includes the likes of Morgana le Fey and Chrysalis.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: The Collector really enjoys how much of Raven's body is shown off by her leotard when she's not wearing her cloak, and loves to admire her bared legs.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • The Chaotic Masters genuinely loved each and every member of their harems, who loved them and each other in return.
    • They might constantly get on each other's nerves, but the Dazzlings are still sisters and care about each other.
    • While Madame Mim might terrify the Masters a bit, and she has some friction with Adagio, she genuinely cares about them in her own twisted way, along with their brides (despite said friction with Adagio).
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Tricksters though they might be, the Chaotic Masters always keep their end of any deals they make with people, even if Exact Words tend to be needed, and will punish anyone who doesn't uphold their end of the bargain. Also, no matter how wild they'd get in their sex lives, they made a point of never touching each other's wives.
    • It turns out that Shendu and the other Demon Sorcerers having used the Book of Ages to alter reality is considered insane even by other villains.
    • The other attendees at Roulette's auction are all disgusted by Wong trying to outbid Jade's attempts to buy a Palisman just to spite her, seeing it as ungentlemanly to treat a child like that (especially since they all see her as having great potential for evil herself), as well as by his sexist remarks towards her. Him saying that he'd use its essence in a spell, or even try absorbing it himself, also infuriates several of the attendees, including the Sirens (especially Sonata), as the Chaotic Masters were the ones who created Palismen to begin with.
    • The Collector's mirror was in Vandal Savage's possession during WWII, and the Collector is not a fan of him, even asking Raven to pass on a request to the Justice League to tell him to "go fuck himself" the next time the heroes see him. Constantine even says that no one who's not an idiot or trying to exploit a Nazi actually likes them.
    • Madame Mim is furious at the implications that the Masters used mind control or similar methods to attract their brides.
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Both Captain Black and Boss Awesome find WHOOP's activities sketchy, especially in regards to how they recruit agents (with both agreeing that the idea of a "spy gene" is idiotic).
    • Constantine doesn't think too highly of many of the rules surrounding The Masquerade, but even he admits that letting the general public know that magic exists would cause everyone to want to get ahold of it, risking it falling into dangerous hands. Also, when Raven later finds him sneaking into her room to find the Collector's mirror and snarks about him going through her underwear drawer, he's disgusted at the implication that he's some kind of pervert.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Or more accurately, evil that doesn't have standards can't comprehend evil that does — Wong is dumbfounded by the other attendees at the auction counteracting his spiteful attempts to outbid Jade for a Palisman, not understanding why they'd want to help a child at all, let alone one aligned with good.
  • Evil Is Petty: When Wong sees that Jade is bidding at a Palisman at the auction, he deliberately bids on it just so he can keep her from getting it. He even says that he plans to use its essence in a spell or try to absorb it himself, just to get her goat, disgusting many of the other participants.
  • Fallen Hero:
    • The Chaotic Masters had a habit back in the day of seducing various heroines into their harems, at which point they'd help destroy their own kingdoms and aid the Masters in their rampages.
    • In addition to the canonical case of Chase Young, it's revealed that Wuya also used to be a Xiaolin Dragon before becoming corrupted by a lust for power.
  • Fantastic Racism:
    • According to Raven, the magical community at large operates under The Masquerade for fear of persecution from non-magical people.
    • Raven herself ends up on the receiving end of this when Uncle immediately identifies her as half-demon and jumps to the conclusion that she's evil.
    • Jinx suggests that the Third Race looks down on her for being half-human.
  • Fate Worse than Death: According to Alastor, this is what Snow White did to Grimhilde after falling under the sway of the Masters — not only was she forced to dance in iron shoes (as per the original Grimm brothers fairy tale), but she was cursed into a form so hideous that it drove her insane, with her soul being bound to her body so that even death wouldn't release her, and then on top of all that her soul was then tortured and experimented on until she was turned into a twisted monstrosity that would go on to be the first Banshee.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: After escaping from the chaos at the auction, Jade and Viper end up having dinner at a fancy restaurant with Miss Dorado, Alastor, Xanatos and Owen.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Adagio is furious at the thought that the Collector is showing interest in Raven. According to him, she was always like this when it came to him picking up additional women for his harem.
  • Hedge Mage: With Uncle refusing to teach her magic on the grounds that he feels she's not worthy of it, Jade decides to spite him by teaching herself, using the Palisman she bonded with at Roulette's auction and a book on the subject gifted to her by Miss Dorado afterwards.
  • He Who Must Not Be Named: The third Chaotic Master was not only sealed away, but even the ability to say his name was magically blocked, leaving anyone trying to refer to him only able to say "BJ" or his title "Lord of the Creepies".
  • Horrifying the Horror: Constantine has dealt with all sorts of horrifying monstrosities, and Circe has been imprisoned in Tartarus… and both are still thoroughly creeped out by Lumalee's cheerful nihilism.
  • I Need a Freaking Drink: Constantine's reaction after the fighting at the auction, as well as finding out that the Chaotic Masters are returning.
  • I Owe You My Life: Some of the attendees of the auction, who remember Demon World, feel that they owe Jade a favor for being instrumental in stopping the Demon Sorcerers and restoring reality.
  • I Want Grandkids: Madame Mim is effectively the mother figure of the Masters, and mentions a few times that she wishes that they'd give her some grandchildren.
  • Journey to the Center of the Mind: The Collector talks Raven into letting him into her Mental World so that he can help her merge with her emoticlones, as a means of controlling her powers to the extent that Trigon can't use her.
  • Kick the Dog:
    • Tirek mocks the Dazzlings by suggesting that the Chaotic Masters don't actually care about them and will replace them once they're freed, for no other reason than he knows that it'll get under their skin.
    • Wong tries to outbid Jade's efforts to bid on a Palisman at the auction for no other reason than to spite her.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em:
    • When the Titans (with Zatanna and Constantine in tow) realize the extent of the villainous attendees to Roulette's auction, they decide they're out of their depth and need to withdraw to call for backup.
    • After Section 13 breaks up the fighting at the auction, Mad Mod gives up instead of fighting or trying to weasel his way out of arrest, saying that he could use the peace and quiet of spending some time in a cell.
  • Let's You and Him Fight: The United Heroez act hostile towards the Xiaolin Dragons upon first meeting them, due to being confused about who they are and on edge after Jack's attack on New York to claim the Serpent's Tail. This results in Dojo blasting Majestia with his fire breath when she tries to stop them from leaving, though they get away before things escalate further.
  • Locked Out of the Loop:
    • Apparently the reason that the Titans and the Justice League never heard about the Chans' adventures despite the global scale threat of Shendu and the Demon Sorcerers is that Captain Black's superiors refused to believe any of his reports and didn't pass along the information.
    • Raven keeps all her knowledge of various things covered by The Masquerade to herself unless she has no choice, because she firmly believes that it's too much of a danger if it becomes well-known by non-magical people. As such, she's initially the only one of the heroes who knows about things like Meridian's magical society or the Dragon Council, with the others having to learn about it from the Monkey King and independent research.
    • It turns out that the Dragon Council (or at least Jake) has been oblivious to Hawkmoth's activities in Paris, despite the historical alliance between the Council and the Miraculous users.
    • Aside from Omi, none of the Xiaolin Dragons ever heard of the Chaotic Masters, nor knew that part of their role is to fight the Masters if they ever come back. Additionally, not even Omi knew that Wuya used to be Xiaolin herself before turning to evil, as Dojo doesn't like to talk about that.
    • Robin is hesitant to inform the League of the situation with the Chaotic Masters and get them involved in his team's business.
  • Mass "Oh, Crap!": Most of the world's various magic-associated beings, both good and evil, freak out upon realizing that the Chaotic Masters are returning.
  • Mêlée à Trois: Roulette's auction ultimately breaks out into a free-for-all between every single attendee and the infiltrating heroes for possession of the various artifacts.
  • Moment Killer: In Chapter 12, Jackie and Viper are about to kiss, when Jade suddenly bursts in to angrily confront Uncle about the inherent sexism of chi magic and the implication that that is why he's never taught it to her. Understandably, Jackie and Viper's attention is immediately off what was about to happen.
  • Monster Progenitor: Alastor reveals that Grimhilde became the first Banshee after being given a torturous Fate Worse than Death by Snow White and the Masters, later giving birth to the rest of that species.
  • My Eyes Are Up Here: Gogo says this during the first fight with the Monkey King, when he starts checking her out.
  • Mythology Gag: In order to defeat Madame Mim, Raven takes the Collector's advice and challenges her to a battle of transformations with Beast Boy. Due to being rusty, Mim loses the challenge when she fails to transform into a dragon.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • Adagio likes to note with amusement how rather than ending up in a world without magic like Starswirl intended, the Dazzlings not only ended up in one rich with it, but with events leading to them living like goddesses as the Chaotic Masters' chief brides.
    • Fred casually mentioning how his research shows that chi wizardry is historically a sexist tradition that excludes teaching women enrages Jade, who goes to confront Uncle about it, leading to a fight wherein he reveals that he simply doesn't see her as worthy of learning magic due to her impulsive nature. This forms a rift between the two, which doesn't seem to be mending itself any time soon.
    • Aqualad infiltrates Roulette's auction to steal the Trident of Triton, which is viewed as a holy relic by Atlantis, and is so determined to do so even when being confronted and outnumbered by security in the vault that he starts a fight which spills out onto the show floor. This breaks the truce that the place runs on, triggering a free-for-all that results in many of the villains in attendance grabbing whatever artifacts they can get ahold of and fleeing before the law can arrive to break things up and make any arrests, ruining the sting operation that the Titans and League were running.
    • While fighting Wong at the auction, Jade accidentally blasts a magic cauldron with her Palisman, indirectly causing Madame Mim, who was imprisoned inside, to break free.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: At the auction, Wong mentions how Jade and her family were the ones that stopped Shendu and the other Demon Sorcerers when he gets mad at how the other bidders are stopping him from keeping Jade from getting a Palisman, but since several of the bidders are magical enough to have Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory of the Demon World incident, that just makes them like her more.
  • Noodle Incident: Vandal Savage had the Collector's mirror during WWII, and the Collector hates him as a result.
  • Not Me This Time:
    • The Collector denies having had anything to do with World War II, pinning all the blame on Hitler and Vandal Savage.
    • When Roulette asks what Circe did to Lumalee to make him the way he is, Circe responds that he was like that when she got him.
  • Obstructive Bureaucrat:
    • The Titans dismiss Captain Black's superiors as red tape-wielding stereotypes, who have inadvertently kept them and the Justice League in the dark about the threats that the Chans have faced due to refusing to pass along word of them without definite proof.
    • The Chaotic Masters and their worshippers have this view of the Dragon Council, seeing them as self-righteous jerks who stick their nose into any magical business and enforce The Masquerade even for magic practitioners who don't want to keep things secret.
  • Oh, Crap!: There's several moments of this from the heroes infiltrating Roulette's auction when they see some of the other attendees. Especially from Constantine when he realizes that he's previously scammed most of them at one point or another.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: When the Titans and Big Hero team are discussing Jade with Zatanna and Constantine, the subject of chi wizards refusing to teach women comes up. Constantine offhandedly states that they have a point about that, resulting in every woman present glaring at him.
  • The Order: The Knights of Entropy are the militant wing of the Chaostism religion, tasked with manipulating world events in Meridian's favor.
  • Our Dragons Are Different: Dojo, who is a classical Chinese dragon, refers to the members of the Dragon Council as a subspecies, though notes that they could arguably be considered a branch of humans instead.
  • Out-of-Clothes Experience: During Kim's nightmare premonition of the Chaotic Masters' impending return, she finds herself naked as the Collector looms over her.
  • Pet the Dog: When Wong tries to outbid Jade for a Palisman at Roulette's auction just to spite her, the other attendees work together to outbid him in turn so that they can gift the Palisman to Jade. Dorado later gives her a book of magic and information to care for one as well.
  • Point of Divergence:
    • Obviously, given the crossover setting and other Alternate Universe aspects, things are going to be different from canon. The primary POD in the story's present setting, however, is that during the JCA episode "Monkey A Go-Go", the Monkey King remembers his Sworn Brothers and sets out to free them. Additionally, Jade is left behind at the shop while Jackie and Uncle go after the Noble Monkey; as a result, the Monkey King targets her, and hearing about his actions afterwards sees the Chan men return right away, leaving Daolon Wong to claim the Monkey power.
    • The Big Hero 6's fight with Baron von Steamer ends up being cut anticlimactically short due to having backup from Section 13.
    • During the Xiaolin Showdown over the Serpent's Tail, Omi is so distracted by learning about the Chaotic Masters' awakenings that he loses the match, allowing Jack and Wuya to win, where they lost in canon.
    • The events of Journey to the West did happen to a point, but it and reality diverged while the Monkey King was travelling with Tang Sanzang and he met the other two Chaotic Masters.
  • Polyamory: Each of the Chaotic Masters had a harem back in the day — the Collector had 10 wives, while the Monkey King and BJ each had 11. And it's worth noting that all the wives loved each other as much as their respective husbands.
  • The Power of Blood: The Collector can only be freed from the Magic Mirror he's trapped in if it's exposed to the blood of someone else "born from the stars", i.e. an alien.
  • Precision F-Strike: The Collector's message for the Justice League, passed along via Raven, is to tell Vandal Savage to "go fuck himself" the next time they see him.
  • Really 700 Years Old:
    • Baron von Steamer claims be be over 200. Considering he's seemingly a non-magical human, everyone is taken aback by that claim.
    • Daolon Wong's origins are unknown, but records of him date back to at least the Ming Dynasty.
  • Religion of Evil: Played With in regards to Chaostism, the religion that worships the Chaotic Masters as gods. While that should make it a clear-cut example due to the Masters doing everything For the Evulz, practitioners justify the Masters' actions as empowerment of free will and preventing stagnation.
  • Right Hand Versus Left Hand: Captain Black notes how government agencies tend to keep each other in the dark, when he captures Tala carrying out a Cadmus operation in his city without alerting Section 13 about it.
  • Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: As it turns out, magical and otherworldly beings are immune to having their memories altered when the Book of Ages rewrites reality, so they all remember Demon World.
  • Rules Lawyer: When the heroes raid Roulette's auction, she points out that it was organized legally, and that most of the attendees have good enough public personas that they can't be touched, with the more blatantly evil ones being brushed off as having snuck in. As such, not only can she and most of her guests not be arrested, but the heroes have to actually pay for both the artifacts they're trying to confiscate and the damage caused by the fighting.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The reason Roulette arranges the auction for Circe is because the latter is eager to unload all the artifacts in her possession that once belonged to the Chaotic Masters so that she can go into hiding (possibly in Another Dimension) before they come looking for them. Vanessa Barone likewise gets in on things to get rid of the gem she stole from Tirek and find a place to hide before he can come after her for it.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can:
    • The Chaotic Masters were all sealed away centuries ago, the Monkey King as a puppet, the Collector in a mirror, and BJ being burned to ashes and sealed in an urn (though it's noted he escaped from this at some point only to be sealed again, with his new location currently unknown).
    • Tirek the Devourer apparently spent some time sealed in a mountain after being drained of his magic, until Vanessa Barone freed him in the process of looking for magic artifacts to steal.
    • The Magic Mirror reveals to Sonata that the other Brides of Chaos disappeared because they were sealed somewhere where Time Stands Still.
    • Madam Mim was sealed in a cauldron and was released after the auction.
  • Sealed Good in a Can: Olaf was sealed away by Dashi, only to be awakened at the auction, but despite being a creation of one of the brides of the Masters, he doesn't have a malicious snowflake in his body.
  • Self-Insert Fic: Downplayed, but the Collector and BJ are self-inserts of nightmaster000 and D_Rissing, respectively.
  • Ship Tease:
    • Raven is hinted to have a crush on Beast Boy, judging by comments made by her Happy emoticlone, and how she later feels happy at a compliment he gives her.
    • As per canon, Jackie and Viper are clearly attracted to each other, though have yet to become an Official Couple.
  • Skewed Priorities: Instead of immediately fleeing the auction with their pilfered artifacts, even with Section 13 showing up to raid the place, Adagio insists on staying to jealously confront Raven about the Collector showing an interest in her.
  • Split-Personality Merge: The purpose of the Journey to the Center of the Mind that the Collector takes Raven on is to merge with her emoticlones, so that she can embrace her emotions and fully control her powers to the extent that Tirek can't use them to influence her.
  • The Starscream: Tirek is planning to claim Raven's powers for himself and use them to usurp Trigon.
  • Stating the Simple Solution: When the Titans and League are discussing how to get Aqualad out of legal trouble over his attempt to steal the Trident from Roulette, Beast Boy asks if they can just buy it off of her to settle the matter. Everyone else is dumbfounded that they didn't think of that.
  • The Tease: Viper is implied to have chosen revealing sleepwear specifically to get Jackie flustered.
  • Tempting Fate: At the end of the Titans meeting with the League about the fallout from the auction, Beast Boy states that at least things can't get worse. Cue a news alert about Madame Mim taking hostages to get the Masters' attention.
  • That Man Is Dead: Wuya says as much regarding who she was when she was a Xiaolin Dragon.
  • Theory of Narrative Causality: When the Collector learns that Madame Mim is free and in San Fransokyo he notes that while it's likely that this universe has it as an actual force, it's getting ridiculous even by his standards with how many supernatural villains are showing up in the city, wondering if it's cursed or something.
  • Trauma Button: All the kwami are unnerved by the thought of the Chaotic Masters' return due to how the three once purged many of their kind, and forced most of the rest to empower their brides. But Xuppu has it the worst, having been forcibly bonded to the Monkey King to increase his power, and has a panic attack when he senses the Monkey King's return.
  • Truce Zone: One of the rules of Roulette's auction is that attendees are not allowed to fight, which is why her guards step in to stop Wong from attacking Jade when he realizes her presence.
  • Unholy Matrimony:
    • The Chaotic Masters each had a harem, composed of various villains and corrupted heroines all totally dedicated to them, with the feeling being mutual.
    • Tirek the Devourer and Chrysalis apparently were a couple back in the day, until she dumped him (though he claims he was the one to turn on her).
  • The Un-Favourite: Tirek is incensed at how Trigon views him as just another minion while treating Raven as the key to all his plans. This resentment is what's fueling his plans to usurp his father.
  • Un-person: After they were defeated, most information on the Chaotic Masters was erased to avoid any future evils being tempted to find and release them, with what little still exists having faded to myth and legend. Deconstructed however, when Xanatos points out that in doing this, it was made virtually impossible for people in the modern age to figure out how to fight the Masters upon their escapes.
  • Villainous Friendship: Upon meeting at the auction, Mad Mod and Señor Senior Sr. bond over their shared annoyance at having their sons turn out to be joke villains. The latter even invites the former to a weekly poker game with similarly-minded villainous parents.
  • Villain Takes an Interest:
    • As an extension of how he and the other Chaotic Masters would seduce heroines into their harems, in the present day the Collector has his eye on Raven, and mentions how he finds Jade interesting.
    • Being a Gadgeteer Genius, Jack is instantly smitten when he meets Uncanny Valley, the teen android girl member of the United Heroez.
  • Villain Team-Up:
    • Upon sensing the Chaotic Masters' return, Monkey Fist reluctantly teams up with Drakken to escape prison and go after the Miraculous, intending to use them to earn his way into Monkey King's service and study under him as his disciple.
    • Since an open conflict between them would catch the attention of all the heroes, which neither side wants, Tirek and the Dazzlings instead cut a deal — they'll find the magic gems he needs to restore himself to full power, and in exchange he'll give them everything they need to free their husbands.
    • Upon learning that the Collector's mirror has resurfaced, Demona and Macbeth reluctantly agree to team up in order to free him, in exchange for him breaking the bond between the two of them. Later, they recruit Madame Mim to help them as well, since as the Masters' adoptive mother, she'd want him free just for its own sake.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: The Chaotic Masters are literally worshipped in Meridian, due to having founded the country after breaking the pirate slavery ring that was operating out of the islands centuries ago and freeing all the slaves.
  • Weirdness Magnet: When the Collector hears that Madame Mim is free and in San Fransokyo, he wonders what the Hell is up with the city that so many supernatural evils and things connected to them keep showing up.
  • We Used to Be Friends:
    • Wuya used to be a Xiaolin Dragon, and according to Dojo was considered a close friend by the rest (with it even being implied Dashi was in love with her).
    • The Collector befriended Kimiko when she found his mirror as a young child, being the Only Friend she had for most of her childhood. She thus spent years trying to find a way to free him, eventually hitting on the idea to upload him into a virtual reality that her father created, from which he could spread across the internet. However, when this nearly succeeded and caused widespread chaos as a result, Kimiko was horrified, and convinced that the Collector had lied to and used her; in the present, she's still infuriated at even the mention of him.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: In-Universe, the Dazzlings are the only members of the Chaotic Masters' harems whose fates are known, as according to them the other brides all vanished without a trace while trying to meet at a fallback point following the Masters' defeat. The Magic Mirror eventually reveals that they were sealed away some time after their husbands were.
  • What the Hell, Hero?:
    • When Raven makes some disparaging comments after Jade gets a palisman, Jade finally snaps and chews her out for the negative attitude she's treated Jade with since they met, stating how Jade looked up to her but now sees her as a huge Jerkass. Similarly, in the next chapter Big Hero 6, especially Gogo, aren't very happy with her being so hard on Jade either.
    • Aqualad gets chewed out by the other heroes for how his recklessness in trying to steal Triton's trident from the auction triggered the fight that caused the whole thing to devolve into chaos.
  • While Rome Burns: The Monkey King at one point reminisces about how he and Sonata shared their first kiss while dancing in the ashes of the Forbidden City as the Huns sacked it.
  • Winds of Destiny, Change!: The moth palisman that Jade acquires at Roulette's auction is actually a Mothman, and as such specializes in manipulating causality to bring bad luck to anyone threatening it or its wielder.
  • Worthy Opponent: The Collector apparently felt this way about Grand Master Dashi, respecting his power and skill, and also liking his laid back attitude (and his ability to mess with Wuya, whom the Chaotic Masters and their wives couldn't stand either).
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit: When first revealing himself to the Titans, the Collector pretends to be a hero who was sealed in the mirror by Wuya when he defied her attack on his village, hoping to garner their sympathy to free him. Unfortunately for him, Raven sees through his efforts.
  • "You!" Exclamation:
    • Wong's reaction when he sees Jade at Roulette's auction.
    • Vanessa Barone also reacts this way when she recognizes Jade, due to her part in the former's previous loss to Jackie.
