Fanfic / Digimon Codex

Go To

Digimon Codex is a fanfic written by Banshee531. It is a Fusion Fic between the My Little Pony: Equestria Girls and Digimon franchises.

Flash Sentry has always loved Digimon. He is a fan of their video games, card game, and anime, but then one day he learns that Digimon are in fact real. He is invited to join Codex, where the game of Digimon becomes more real than he ever imagined. Now, Flash is ready to battle in Codex, as well as adventure throughout the Digital World with his new partner, and make some new friends. It was completed on April 27, 2024, with the series planned to continue in the future.

Digimon Codex provides examples of:

  • Accidental Good Outcome: In "Eclipse Battle", it is revealed that Flash and Trixie taking the Digimental of Friendship from Flaremon destroyed his home, causing him to hold a grudge against them and seek revenge. However, it is pointed out that this also led to him meeting Sunset Shimmer and becoming her partner, and the two clearly care about each other. After losing to Trixie and Lunamon in a battle, this convinces Coronamon to let go of his grudge. In the same chapter, Trixie explains that she was practicing with Lunamon in the Beta-Stadium against her Crusadermon deck, but forgot to add a Mega into her own deck. Not wanting to give up in a bad spot, she allowed her Mega Digivolution to happen, causing her to unlock Lunamon's natural Mega form Dianamon, a member of the Olympus XII that is normally locked.
  • The Ace: Shining Armor is known as the best player in Codex. Not only was he one of the first players online, he was the first to make it into Rookie, Champion, and Ultimate levels, and upon him first meeting Flash, Micro claims he will be the first Mega Level Player too.
    • Shining later explains that he didn't just start off that way though. He has lost plenty of battles and he and Monodramon have almost gotten deleted plenty of times, but he learned from them all to become the skilled player he is.
    • During "The Ace of Codex", Shining finally becomes the first Mega ranked player in Codex by defeating Blaze Burner in a battle by a large margin.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: MagnaAngemon in the canon series was the Ultimate of Patamon and partner to TK, being an overall heroic and nice character. While he is still a hero in this setting and helps fight the Virus Army by leading the resistance against it, he is much ruder than he was in canon, speaking down about humans, saying they aren't as reliable as he was told, and showing Fantastic Racism towards all Virus type Digimon, regardless of their level or if they have even done anything, almost destroying one Codex Player's partner Otamamon upon seeing it. He also states he plans to destroy all Virus types once he Digivolves into one of the Four Great Dragons. After the first major battle, he is left bitter over missing his chance to become Goldramon instead of celebrating their victory.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • In his home series, Jet Set was just a minor jerk, whose worst actions were talking down to others, but didn't really do anything to directly cause trouble. Here though, he is much more of a direct bully, and plans to try to somehow steal Veemon from Flash for himself, and later succeeds, but only temporarily.
    • Wormmon and Stingmon both receive this to different extents.
      • In the anime, Wormmon tried to be a Morality Pet to his partner Ken Ichijouji, but was technically an Accomplice by Inaction and admitted to being just as guilty as Ken because of it. Here however, Hudiemon has an entire army of loyal Wormmon who serve her without question, with them directly capturing Flash and Veemon, showing Fantastic Racism to Flash for being a human, and cheering loudly when Veemon fights for his life against Stingmon.
      • Stingmon acted as Wormmon's Redemption Promotion, having Digivolved into him after Ken's Heel–Face Turn. Here though, he shows none of the heroic qualities he did in the anime, being Huiemon's greatest warrior and showing no mercy as he pummels Veemon.
    • WarGrowlmon was one of the main protagonists in Digimon Tamers due to being the Ultimate of Guilmon and partnered with Takato. Here, he serves as one of the main antagonists, being the leader of the Virus Army and seeking one of the Dragon Soul Stones so he can Digivolve into the evil Megidramon and destroy the Digital World.
  • All Webbed Up: Flash is wrapped up in webbings by an army of Wormmon. He later has his mouth webbed shut for speaking to Hudiemon, and is almost cocooned when he tries to help Veemon against Stingmon.
  • Alternate Universe Fic: On top of this being a universe where Digimon exist in the Equestria Girls setting, it is eventually revealed in "The Knight's Tale" that Yggdrasil went offline after creating Imperialdramon and giving him its power, instead of creating Program X. This means that there is no X-Antibody, X Digimon, or Alphamon; which also means the Royal Knights only have 12 members.
  • Ambiguous Situation: After Datamon finds out Veemon is a rare one-of-a-kind Digimon, he secretly scans him while his back is turned when he, Flash, Micro, and Tentomon start to leave his shop, commenting to himself how unlike Codex players he can scan a partner Digimon. It is unclear if he plans to do anything malicious with this scan.
  • And I Must Scream: After Jet Set wins Veemon from Flash in an Ante-Battle, he keeps him inside his Digivice at all times, never letting him out once since winning him. Twilight says Veemon is a prisoner again, except even worse then when he was under the Digimental, since at least then he wasn't conscious.
  • …And That Little Girl Was Me: Subverted; while the Royal Knights tell the story of their founder, Imperialdramon, towards the end of the story it is revealed that Imperialdramon gave the last of his power to WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon, resulting in the two of them performing the world's first DNA Digivolution into Omnimon. However, when everyone turns to Omnimon at this, he immediately declares he is not the original Omnimon, since the original was deleted a long time ago.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: The ending of "Playing for Keeps" has Jet Set defeat Flash in an Ante Battle, and as a result takes Veemon from him, since he purposely left out that partners could be taken in an Ante Battle too instead of just scans. Though this victory of his is later undone in "A Rematch To Remember", when Flash beats him in a rematch and takes Veemon back.
  • Balance Between Good and Evil: The Digital World and Dark Ocean are described as being "two sides of the same coin". As long as the Digital World exists the Dark Ocean must exist to maintain balance.
  • Beach Episode: "Beach Day Mystery" has Pinkie try to give everyone a day off with a relaxing day at a beach location in the Digital World. But things quickly go south when they end up getting pulled into the Dark Ocean.
  • Berserk Button: Sandalwood gets sore if someone insults his mother, even if indirectly. When Trixie goes on a scathing rant about him, Sandalwood takes it as an attack on his mother and challenges her to a duel; Micro points out that she never talked about his mother, but Sandalwood defends himself that she would be insulted if she heard that.
  • Being Evil Sucks: Megadramon hates being a Virus Type, having accidentally Digivolved into one after absorbing too much data from Virus Digimon, since everywhere he goes now everyone treats him like he only exists to destroy data. He joined WarGrowlmon since he had nowhere else to go. But Flash convinces him that just because he's a Virus Type doesn't mean he needs to be evil, and Megadramon admits he doesn't want the Digital World destroyed, turning against WarGrowlmon.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: The Airdramon that Flash and Twilight chased and fought to get scans of when they first met and became friends ends up returning as a Megadramon, now part of WarGrowlmon's Virus Army. When he and Flash get trapped underground together, he recognizes Flash. Fortunately, Flash manages to convince him to change sides.
  • Cliffhanger: Digimon Codex ends on a cliffhanger, with a Digimon shaped like a T-Rex with several spikes all over its body suddenly merging and running off into the night, with the narration explaining the hole it left behind from the cave it emerged from will bring about a great calamity for the Digital World.
  • Crippling Overspecialization: Lightning Dust's partner Kokuwamon is a Data type Digimon, so she uses a Battle Gear called the Virus Buster Breaker to give them an advantage against Virus types. But when the Virus Buster Breaker is destroyed during her battle with Micro Chips she is left at a disadvantage for the remainder of the match.
  • Death of Personality: This is what happens when two wild Digimon fuse via DNA Digivolution. While two Digimon with human partners can safely DNA Digivolve with no problems, two wild Digimon can't fuse minds, resulting in one needing to absorb the data of the other, and the other getting deleted. When the brothers Wingdramon and Breakdramon learn about this while training with the Royal Knights to become Examon together, Wingdramon purposely keeps himself from Digivolving in order to protect his brother. Thankfully though, Flash figures out how to work around this, thanks to Gennai modifying a scan of Slayerdramon so it can take the place of the real Digimon and since it doesn't have a mind of its own Breakdramon can safely DNA Digivolve with it without anyone dying.
  • Didn't See That Coming: Twilight initially thinks that BlueMeramon possesses Fire that is even hotter than the regular Meramon because blue flames are hotter than red ones. However, his attacks are ice-themed instead, shocking everyone. Flash guesses that in the Digital World, blue flames are cold instead of hot.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Hudiemon gets enraged when she or one of her subjects are scanned by humans. When Thorax scans Stingmon, she declares she'll have his head, and growls at Fluttershy when she scans her, even when Fluttershy calls her beautiful.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap:
    • The Digivolution Chamber allows players to Digivolve their Digimon scans by paying a certain amount of Digidollars. However, some forms also require items to unlock, such as needing a certain Digimental for an Armor Level. Also, most of the really powerful Mega Level Digimon can't be bought at all, needing to be scanned or digivolved into on their own. This prevents everyone from having overpowered forms right away.
    • Although digivolving in Codex matches is easy, it is much harder to do outside in the Digital World. Barley anyone is able to get their partner to Digivolve past Champion, and even Shining Armor, the best player in Codex, only recently got his partner to Digivolve to Ultimate a few months ago.
    • The Dragon Soul Stones create a barrier whenever they appear that prevents any Mega Level or higher Digimon from getting within ten miles of them. This means the Royal Knights and any of the Great Dragons that still exist are unable to help the Resistance in their efforts to obtain the stones and prevent Megidramon's return.
  • Dramatic Irony:
    • In "Making Friends and Making Enemies", Flash and Twilight meet both on Earth and the Digital World and have drastically different first impressions. While their Earth versions don't have a great start due to Twilight unknowingly causing Flash a Humiliation Conga all day that culminates in the two having an argument during an experiment that gets them both detention, their digital counterparts meet on a Digimon Hunt where they save each other and help each other get the scans they were after. Once their Earth counterparts get their memories of this adventure, the two of them laugh together over it.
    • At the end of "Taking it to the Ex-Treme", Flash and Thorax discover that ExVeemon and Stingmon can both DNA Digivolve, but have no idea with which Digimon. While they quickly decide they might never find out what the needed components for them both are, fans of the series will know that they are able to DNA Digivolve with each other.
  • Ear Ache: Twilight grabs Trixie by the ear and pulls her by it when dragging her to sort things out with Flash, with Trixie letting out several painful shirks of "Ow!" along the way.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: A few recognizable characters make unnamed appearances in Codex before their official introductions.
    • Jet Set, Lightning Dust, and Lightning Dust's partner Kokuwamon all appear at the beginning of "A Rocky First Fight", watching Flash's first match in Codex.
    • In the same chapter, Applejack and Rainbow Dash watch the climax of Flash's match with their partners Labramon and Kamemon.
    • Rarity, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie all appear in "A Tricky Opponent to Fight", watching Flash's match against Trixie with their partners Salamon, Terriermon, and Dilemon.
  • Education Mama: Thorax's mother Chrysalos is shown to be one. She gets on his case for getting a single B on his report card instead of straight A's, telling him how it could potentially ruin his whole future and how he needs to "get serious" about his studies and spend every waking moment preparing for his future.
  • Fake Action Prologue: The story begins with a battle between Greymon and Monochromon, with Greymon digivolving to SkullGreymon to win. Then it is revealed this was not a battle between real Digimon, but just an online match that Flash won against another player.
  • Feud Episode: "Double Battle, Double Trouble" has Flash and Trixie butting heads during a tag battle due to getting in each other's way and both blaming each other for the humiliating defeat they suffered, with both of them ending their friendship. This carries over into the next chapter, "The Storm of Friendship", with the two spending three days shooting death glares at each other. Their friends try to help talk things out with them, and eventually their Digimon partners call the two of them out on their dumb attitude interfering with their goals. After a fierce battle against Flaremon, the two reaffirm their friendship together and share the reward for retrieving the Digimental of Friendship together 50/50.
  • Fire-Forged Friends:
    • While their digital selves got along very well from the start, the real Flash and Twilight didn't get along with each other at first. It was only when they received the memories of their digital selves' adventure that they finally got along buried the hatchet.
    • When Flash and Micro first meet Rarity, Fluttershy, and Pinkie Pie, they all get into an argument over which battle gear Datamon should finish first, since they wanted to scan different ones. They got into a competition to see who could retrieve the special ore needed first, with both groups talking down to each other the whole time. Ultimately though, they come together to defeat Landramon when he attacks the girls, and both groups end up getting what they want when they discover much more ore than they expected. In the end, they decide that when they're not competing in Codex they should be working together.
  • Freudian Excuse: Twilight explains to Flash that her time at a previous school where everyone was competitive is why she initially acted this way toward him and other students.
  • Fusion Dance: In Codex, you can place a Digimon scan in your item box, with the right combination resulting in a DNA Digivolution.
  • Girls vs. Boys Plot:
    • "Digital Battle of the Sexes" has Sandalwood and Trixie get into a huge argument after an accident between them that quickly escalates into a battle of the sexes as the two of them settle things in a battle of boy Digimon vs girl Digimon. Nearly every boy and girl gets involved in the argument except for Mangoramon, Lunamon, Micro, Flash, Twilight, and their Digimon partners. In the end the girl Digimon win, but with the twist that Sandalwood was the one using them while Trixie used the boy Digimon, shocking the entire crowd except for Mangoramon and Lunamon and rendering the debate pointless. Most are still baffled by who the true victor is, but the narrative concludes that it's pointless.
    • This happens again in the following chapter, "Like it Ore Not, The Hunt is On". Flash and Micro visit Datamon at the same time as Rarity, Fluttershy, and Pinkie, and he shows them two new battle gear he is working on. The boys want to scan a canon while the girls want the shield. Datamon sends them out to get some rare special ore so he can finish one of the gear, with the other needing to wait another month. This results in a race between the two groups to get the ore first. Ultimately, the boys save the girls from Landramon and work together to defeat it, and decide to let Datamon decide which gear to finish first. However, they find a lot more ore than expected, with Datamon easily able to finish both gears, and the two groups deciding they should work together outside the stadiums from now on.
  • Hated by All: Jet Set becomes this to nearly every player in Codex, with the only noticeable exception of his friend Lightning Dust, after he tricks Flash into agreeing to an Ante-Battle without explaining to him that he can even take his partner Veemon from him if he loses. Then after he takes Veemon from Flash he imprisons Veemon in his Digivice for days, never letting him out and treating him like a possession. His actions result in the Codex Commanders holding a meeting to discuss how his actions have negatively affected all of Codex, and when Flash comes demanding another Ante-Battle to win Veemon back, everyone present boos Jet when he initially refuses, calling him a coward.
  • Hate Sink: Jet Set and Lightning Dust have done nothing but belittle Flash for being a "newbie" and act very smug toward new players. This becomes even more clear for Jet when he tricks Flash into accepting an Ante-Battle with him, and then steals Veemon from him after he wins.
  • Heroic Bystander: "Memories on the Track" reveals that Rainbow's partner Kamemon was one when they first met, being the only member of Berry Town to step forward and volunteer to help the Tawnimon get their home back from the Jazamon and Jazardmon. This combined with his strength and how he saved Rainbow during the battle, were what led to Rainbow asking if he wants to be her partner.
  • Heroic Sacrifice:
    • While Jijimon Is fighting Dagomon, he leaves himself vulnerable in order to protect the Digidestined from Dagomon's attack and is fatally struck down. But his dying words inspire them not to give into the Dark Ocean's doubt and believe in themselves, giving the, the strength to Warp Digivolve to Ultimate Level.
    • This is attempted when Megadramon decides to use the final Dragon Soul Stone himself after MagnaAngemon is killed, so to keep it out of WarGrowlmon's hands. He knows it will just mean he'll become Megidramon himself, but says he'll try to hold the evil inside him back long enough for his friends to destroy him, so they'll have more time to prepare for when the stone eventually reappears, thus also making this a Suicide by Cop. Fortunately though, this ends up subverted when instead of Digivolving into Megidramon, Megadramon becomes Goldramon instead, after remembering how his friends taught him he decides his own destiny and refusing to let Megidramon's evil overcome him.
  • Heroic Lineage: Veemon is revealed to have a strong connection to the Royal Knights. The founder of the Royal Knights, Imperialdramon, was explained to have fathered the first two Veemon who went on to become the first two Royal Knights, UlforceVeedramon and Magnamon. It is confirmed that Veemon can Digivolve into multiple different Royal Knights, which in addition to the prior two include Examon and Dynasmon, and Flash guesses that due to Veemon's connection to the history of the Royal Knights there are ways he can turn into any of them. He can also become two different Legendary Warriors by Digivolving to them from his Armor Digivolutions.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Datamon soundproofed his entire workshop so his work wouldn't deserve anyone. This becomes a problem though when he is attacked and kidnapped in his own lab by the Virus Army, and nobody hears his screams.
  • I Choose to Stay: After Flash meets Veemon and the two quickly bond together and manage to defeat Monochromon and survive a group of Tyrannomon, instead of going their separate ways, Veemon agrees to become Flash's partner Digimon after Shining Armor suggests it, so they can stay together.
  • It's All About Me: MagnaAngemon is left bitter over Baoyendramon reaching the Dragon Soul Stone before him, becoming Azulongmon and the new leader of the Resistance, feeling that he should have gotten it and become Goldramon instead.
  • I Want My Mommy!: At the beginning of "Canyon Bombardment", Flash's opponent in a Codex match simply says "Mommy." with a gulp and shiver when Flash Mega Digivolves from Megadramon to UlforceVeedramon.
  • Jerkass Realization: Flash feels horrible for acting like a jerk toward Twilight after learning her digital self helped his digital self to get a scan from Airdramon.
  • King of Beasts: Leomon is as heroic and noble as he always is.
  • Kneel Before Frodo: After Baoyendramon Digivolves to Azulongmon, Angewoman bows to him while declaring him the new leader of the resistance, with all the other surviving members, including the humans and their partners, bowing to him in respect as well. Even MagnaAngemon bows his head a bit.
  • Know When to Fold 'Em: Gesomon, as soon as it realizes it’s friends Ebidramon and Shellmon have been beaten and it now finds itself outnumber against Leomon, Veedramon, and Kabuterimon, decides to retreat.
  • The Last of His Kind: Veemon was a species of Digimon that was believed to have been extinct. The one that Flash meets is the first seen in a millennia with Gennai even stating he is the last of his kind. However, Veemon allows Gennai to copy his data and return it to the Digital World, so that future Veemon may eventually be born, possibly also including his prior forms DemiVeemon and Chibomon.
  • Loophole Abuse:
    • The Dragon Soul Stones prevent any Mega Digimon from getting near them, meaning the Royal Knights can't help. However, UlforceVeedramon points out that technically, Magnamon is only an Armor Digimon despite having the power of a Mega. So he has been searching for the Digimental of Miracles in the hopes that they can use it to get someone to Digivolve into Magnamon and hopefully be able to pass through the stone's barrier.
    • As Armormon explains, the Dragon Soul Stone's barrier is meant to keep Megas from getting in, but it can't stop Megas from appearing within. He takes advantage of this to Mega Digivolve into Bombardramon. However, this is used against him when Paildramon manages to Mega Digivolve into Imperialdramon.
  • Male Gaze: When Wallflower Blush Digivolves to Daisymon in her battle with Flash, most of the males watching in the foyer watch her transfixed, including Sandalwood and Mangoramon.
  • Meta Twist: Flash Sentry and Twilight Sparkle meet via a Crash-Into Hello like usual. However, instead of the two of them having Love at First Sight, Twilight rudely walks off from Flash after he returns her glasses without even apologizing for bumping into him, and Flash starts to hate Twilight due to suffering a Humiliation Conga because of her the entire school day. They only become friends after they realize how their digital selves got along with each other and helped each other.
  • Mundane Utility: Terriermon uses his long ears to cool down himself and Fluttershy when traveling through the Digital World Desert.
  • Mythology Gag: Plenty for the Digimon franchise.
    • Flash meeting Veemon has many similarities to Veemon's debut in the Adventure 02 anime. This includes Flash freeing Veemon by moving the Digimental of Courage, Veemon celebrating his freedom, and Armor Digivolving to Flamedramon to defeat Monochromon.
    • During Flash's match with Sandlewood, they both eventually Digivolve into BurningGreymon and Petaldramon, two Digimon from Digimon Frontier.
    • Veemon Digivolves into ExVeemon for the first time in order to protect Flash. This is similar to how the Digimon in the anime would frequently Digivolve in order to save their own partners. Additionally, he first battles against Stingmon, who in the anime he worked with as a partner due to the two DNA Digivolving together into Paildramon.
    • The Digital World's first ever DNA Digivolution was between WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon to create the original Omnimon. This is similar to Digimon Adventure Movie: Our War Game! when WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon Digivolved together to become Omnimon for the first time, being the first time DNA Digivolution was used in the anime.
    • Leomon and Ogermon battle each other in "The Dragon Soul Stone", just like how they are often portrayed as being each other's Arch-Enemy.
    • "Mirror Mirror Match" serves as a reference to the Sakkakumon arc from Digimon Frontier, with most of the Digidestined being captured and forced to battle inside of Sakkakumon where he learns their attack data. Flash and Thorax unlocking their DNA Digivolutions during this is similar to the Fusion Spirit Evolutions that Takuya and Koji unlocked during this, and they defeat Sakkakumon by attacking his center orb containing the data just like in the original.
    • The vision in "An X-trodinary Turn of Events" showing Matadormon being chased by BlackWereGarurumon, with the latter demanding something from the former before simply telling him to survive and suddenly dying is similar to the opening scene of Digimon X-Evolution between Dourmon and Leomon respectively. This also implies that what BlackWereGarurumon was demanding was the X-Antibody, due to Dracmon being a natural carrier like Dourmon.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: It is revealed that after Flash and Twilight hunted and fought the Airdramon together to get a scan of it it became terrified of the world and hid away in a mountain until it could become stronger, it ended up being attacked by hundreds of Vilemon, destroying them and absorbing their data to get stronger, but this caused him to accidentally Digivolve into Megadramon, a Virus Type. Due to being a Virus, he was shunned by the rest of the Digital World, and ended up joining WarGrowlmon's Virus Army since he had nowhere else to go. Fortunately though, Flash makes up for this mistake by convincing Megadramon that being a Virus Type doesn't automatically make him evil and he can be whatever he wants to be. Megadramon chooses to betray WarGrowlmon and join the Resistance.
  • No Ending: "Digital Battle of the Sexes" ends with no resolution to the gender conflict, as Sandalwood wins the battle with Trixie, but he also used female Digimon to do so. Flash, Micro, and Twilight try their best to unpack the results and determine a true victor, but ultimately cannot.
  • Obvious Rule Patch: In Codex, Ante-Battles are a type of battle where the winner gets to take any scan from the loser for keeps. However, this also includes being able to take the loser's partner from them, with the only thing deterring players from doing this a warning that such acts are looked down upon. After Jet Set takes Veemon from Flash this way, the Codex Commanders have a meeting over this, and determine that once Flash wins Veemon back from Jet they need to update the system to make sure a partner Digimon can never be taken in an Ante-Battle again, stating they never should have allowed it to be possible in the first place.
  • Offscreen Moment of Awesome: "The Castle in the Clouds" opens with Flash having won another match in Codex. This time he used his new Betamon and Airdramon scans, with him having won despite not having an Ultimate form for Airdramon and having one less security due to not using his partner Veemon, but defeated his opponent before they could go Ultimate.
  • One-Steve Limit: Averted for most Digimon, since there are multiple of most of them roaming around the Digital World. However, this is actually Invoked with the Royal Knights. It is revealed that the Digital World can only hold one of each Royal Knight at a time. When one Royal Knight comes into existence, any other Digimon that can potentially become that Royal Knight has that path blocked for them until that Royal Knight is deleted.
  • Origins Episode: The chapter "Memories on the Track" primarily focuses on how Twilight and her friends all met at Berry Town. It also shows how Rainbow got her partner Kamemon and how Twilight met her future partner HooTawnimon.
  • Plot-Mandated Friendship Failure: Flash and Trixie spend almost all of "Double Battle, Double Trouble" arguing with each other during a Tag Battle with Applejack and Rarity. After suffering a humiliating loss, the two blame each other and effectively end their friendship. This grudge carries over into the following chapter until their adventure to get the Digimental of Friendship patches things up between them.
  • Poor, Predictable Rock: Twilight explains the main problem Spike has is that despite being a good player, he only ever plays with dragonoid Digimon or Digimon that can become dragons, making him predictable to his opponents.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: Several chapter titles are puns or references.
  • "In a Land Before Time" references The Land Before Time series.
  • Power Up Letdown: Veemon's first time as Raidramon does not go as well for him as other times Digimon unlock a new form for the first time. This is because although Raidramon is powerful, his opponent Flaremon was an Ultimate Level Digimon, who are stronger than Armor Level Digimon like him.
  • Punch Catch: When Veemon is battling Stingmon, Stingmon flies towards him to send him flying with another kick, only for Veemon to catch the Champion's foot and hold him in place before Digivolving into ExVeemon.
  • Red Baron: Before she came to Codex, Fluttershy went by the nickname "the Merciless Mistress ", with Rainbow explaining before she learned Digimon were real she used to wreck all her opponents in online matches. When Flash and the others see her in action in Codex they see that the title was well earned.
  • Refusal of the Call: The Royal Knights speak with Veemon, revealing his Heroic Lineage, and ask him to stay with them so they can train him and he can eventually become the new UlforceVeedramon or Magnamon. But since that would mean leaving Flash, and he can tell how stressful it would be, Veemon politely declines.
  • Rookie Red Ranger: Flash is this for his group of friends. He starts the story as a complete newb who has no idea how Codex or the Digital World worked and needed it all explained to him, with everyone else having much more experience than him. However, he quickly becomes a seasoned player, being the one to practically take the lead role whenever he and his friends go on adventures into the Digital World, and is the first among them to Digivolve to Ultimate Level, even before he was Champion ranked in Codex.
  • Say My Name: Flash yells Jet Set's name as he marches towards him to demand another Ante-Battle to win Veemon back from him.
  • Share the Male Pain: While watching Fluttershy in a match in Codex, Flash and several other males wince when they see Fluttershy, as Gargomon, strike a Deltamon in a spot that "would have hurt a lot had he not been a Digimon". When Rainbow tells them they are way too soft they all glare at her.
  • Shout-Out:
    • A major premise of the story, where players transport another version of themselves to play the game by becoming the creatures and visiting their world, is based on Chaotic. Flash's initial reaction to first arriving in Codex is even the same as Tom's when he arrived in Chaotic.
    • One of the locations in the Digital World is a floating castle in the sky called The Castle of Dark Illusions.
    • Flash and Veemon's goal of being the best team in Codex is described by the narration itself that the two of them would be the very best, like no one ever was.
    • The Electro Cannon Battle Gear is a mixture of two equip spells used by Weevil Underwood, "Laser Cannon Armor" and “Insect Armor with Laser Cannon”.
    • Craniamon snarks "What, you were expecting a happy ending?" when everyone is shocked that the story of the Royal Knight's founder, Imperialdramon, ends with him dying.
    • BlueMeramon quotes Ultimate Big Chill, describing his attacks as "fire so cold it burns".
    • The white Whamon that Hookmon is obsessed with hunting is a clear reference to Moby-Dick, with Hookmon playing the role of Captain Ahab. Rarity even remembers a quote from the story, realizing how similar it is to the situation.
    • The white Whamon swallowing Hookmon and later Twilight and Tawnimon is similar to Monstro the whale swallowing Pinocchio and his father.
    • Whamon having an entire ocean, sky, and island inside his stomach is similar to Laboon the whale.
    • Hookmon first begs "merciful Neptunemon" to take pity on him, only to shortly afterwards curse "merciful Neptunemon", similar to Bender.
    • Twilight and the girls searching for the Library of Infinite Knowledge and finding it buried in a desert is similar to the Avatar: The Last Airbender episode "The Library".
    • The chapter titled "In a Land Before Time", is an obvious reference to the film series The Land Before Time. Additionally, the location visited in the chapter, the Great Valley, shares the name of the main setting in the film series and is home to multiple dinosaur Digimon.
    • GreatHudiemon is described as doing the "Spider-Man motion" with all four of her hands before using her Silk Thread attack to web up Lamortmon.
  • Sibling Team: The Wingdramon and Breakdramon training under the Royal Knights are both brothers, who were both originally Dracomon and Digivolved into Coredramon Blue and Green at the same time. They were trained by the Royal Knights to DNA Digivolve into Examon once they are both Megas. However, thanks to Flash, Breakdramon is able to DNA Digivolve with a mindless scan of Slayerdramon into Examon, and he tells Wingdramon he can Digivolve into a UlforceVeedramon on his own, thus allowing the two brothers to both become Royal Knights and fight side by side without either needing to suffer a Death of Personality.
  • Simple Solution Won't Work: Flash asks if the the Resistance needs help, why not get the Royal Knights to help guard the Dragon Soul Stones, since they probably wouldn't want Megidramon to appear either. Baoyendramon explains they wouldn't be much help because whenever the Dragon Soul Stones appear they create a barrier that prevents any Mega Level or higher Digimon from getting within ten miles of them.
  • Sore Loser:
    • After Micro Chips wins his match against Lighting Dust in "The Castle in the Clouds", Lightning Dust glares at him and says he got lucky, before grabbing her Digivice and saying he's not better than her and is going down next time.
    • Downplayed; Trixie loses to Sandalwood and begrudgingly admits defeat, while rolling her eyes and vowing to take him down in a rematch.
    • After Jet Set loses to Flash in their rematch in "A Rematch To Remember", he immediately declares it impossible and that he must have cheated. Then when Flash takes Veemon back from Jet, Jet storms off, vowing revenge.
    • In the beginning of "Memories on the Track", a player that Flash beats with his scan of the Royal Knight UlforceVeedramon says that scan should be illegal.
    • The player that Fluttershy beats in "A Rapid Battle" says that Fluttershy should have been easy to beat given how shy and scared she always seems, and even when Fluttershy tries to make peace with him he just says this isn't over and he'll beat her next time.
    • Downplayed; the player that Flash beats at the start of "Canyon Bombardment" responds to Flash "No hard feelings?" with a sad sigh of "Yeah. Whatever." before leaving the room.
  • Stealth Mentor: AncientWisemon initially seems like another antagonistic Digimon, who captures most of the Digidestined for trespassing in his territory, claims that searching for power just for the sake of power makes them unworthy of it, and claims if Flash and Thorax can't pass his test then they and their friends will be trapped forever. However, his test actually helps Thorax gain the confidence to continue to fight opponents that are stronger than him, he unlocks ExVeemon's and Stingmon's DNA Digivolution forms Paildramon and Dinobeemon to allow them to become stronger, and after they pass his test he reveals that he was the Apothemon that sent them to his caves in the first place, having had a good feeling about them and wanting to make sure they were worthy of the power he gave them. Similarly, Shining Armor reveals that AncientWisemon did the same thing to him and his friends once, but he didn't warn Flash and the others about this when he told them about the Cave of Reflections because then they wouldn't have gotten the full experience out of their training there.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: Because Digimon like MagnaAngemon have spread so much fear about Virus Digimon, it has led to many Virus Digimon being ostracized by the rest of the Digital World. With nowhere else to go, many of them have joined WarGrowlmon's army just to have a home. This is the reason Megadramon joined, since he was shunned by the rest of the Digital World and believed he could only be a destroyer, until Flash convinced him otherwise.
  • Throwing Down the Gauntlet: In Codex it is possible to challenge other players to official matches, or just for fun in the Beta-Stadium.
    • At the end of "Lessons Learned the Hard Way" Flash challenges Jet Set to another Ante-Battle to get Veemon back from him in front of the entire foyer, with Jet accepting once Flash wages three rare scans in exchange.
    • At the end of "The Great Dragon War's Climax" Shining Armor challenges Flash to a battle in the Beta-Stadium in one week, having been impressive by Flash and Veemon being the first ones to Digivolve to Mega.
  • Truer to the Text: The Royal Knights, famous for constantly getting Adaptational Villainy in their portrayals, are firmly established as the heroic protectors of the Digital World they are meant to be.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Applejack and Rarity serve as this in "Double Battle, Double Trouble". After explaining Tag Battles to Flash and Trixie and how they rely on teamwork, they offer to battle the two of them in the Beta-Stadium so they can experience it for themselves without it being an important match or with someone they don't know. Unfortunately, Flash and Trixie spend the entire battle arguing and getting in each other's way, and after suffering a humiliating loss they both blame each other over, it essentially ends their friendship.
  • We ARE Struggling Together: Flash and Trixie's first attempt at a Tag Battle with each other just results in them arguing the whole time and the two suffering a humiliating defeat. They both continue to blame each other for the loss and essentially end their friendship, until making up in the following chapter.
  • Wham Episode:
    • The chapter "Battle Down the Mine" has Flash and his friends face an Ultimate Level Digimon, Armormon, for the first time. Plus, the ending of the chapter has Armormon getting recruited into a group called Virus Corp, hinting at an organized antagonistic group in the Digital World.
    • "Playing for Keeps" has Flash losing Veemon to Jet Set after Jet defeats him in an Ante Battle, with Veemon forced to become Jet's partner.
    • "A Rematch To Remember" has Flash successfully defeat Jet Set in an Ante-Battle rematch and win Veemon back from him after being separated for three chapters. Additionally, Shining Armor lets Flash keep the scans he let him borrow, and Flash makes it his goal to get good enough to face Shining again one day and beat him.
    • "Taking it to the Ex-Treme" has Veemon finally Digivolve into his natural evolution, ExVeemon.
    • "A Promise Kept" has Flash and Veemon reach the Ultimate Level for the first time outside of Codex, being the first among their group of friends to do so, and [[spoiler:Baoyendramon gets the Dragon Soul Stone and becomes Azulongmon.
  • Whole-Plot Reference: The chapter "Digital Battle of the Sexes" is one for the Chaotic episode "Battledrome of the Sexes". A boy and girl get into an argument that escalates into a boys vs girls debate and have a battle over it. Partway through there is a story told about one of the female creatures being used in the battle, and a twist at the end when it is revealed the boy used girl creatures and the girl used boy creatures, rendering the argument pointless.
  • Wrecked Weapon: It is possible for Battle Gear to break during a Codex match if they take too much damage or are pushed too far beyond their limits.
  • Willfully Weak: A Wingdramon confesses to Flash that he has purposely been holding off on Digivolving into a Slayerdramon despite being capable of doing so, because he knows once he does he and his brother Breakdramon will DNA Digivolve into the Royal Knight Examon, and Breakdramon has volunteered to be the one to suffer Death of Personality as a result. So he has been holding off for as long as possible to protect his brother.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: When Megadramon tells Flash how he hates being a Virus Type due to how he is viewed as nothing but a destroyer, and that's why he joined WarGrowlmon, Flash convinces him that being a Virus Type doesn't automatically make him evil, explaining to him there are Virus Digimon even among the Royal Knights, and that WarGrowlmon lied to him about how he is only a destroyer like him, saying he can be whatever he wants to be. Megadramon is convinced he doesn't want the Digital World destroyed, and chooses to turn against WarGrowlmon.
  • You Don't Look Like You: An in-universe example that is commented on. When the Royal Knights are first introduced, they explain the story of their founder, Imperialdramon, to Flash, Micro, Sandalwood, Trixie, and their partners. Later, Flash and Veemon manage to Mega Digivolve into Imperialdramon from Paildramon when fighting Bombardramon. Micro, Trixie, and Sandal are all confused why this Imperialdramon looks nothing like the one they were told about and images they saw, nothing this version is a dragon instead of humanoid and he doesn't even have a sword. Even the Royal Knights are confused by this when they see an image of the Mega for themselves. Though they reason that Imperialdramon has not been seen since the original was deleted, so there must be more to him than what even they know from the legend. Of course, this is also a case of Dramatic Irony, since none of them know yet that Imperialdramon has multiple forms, and they were told about his Paladin Mode while the version they saw was his Dragon Mode.
