Tear Jerker / Digimon Codex

Go To

"New Partners and New Situations"

  • It is confirmed that Veemon was a species thought to be extinct in the Digital World, and Veemon is The Last of His Kind. However, this is immediately followed by a Tear Dryer moment when Gennai says he can examine and copy Veemon's data and return it to the Digital World's main information stream, allowing for more Veemon to eventually appear.

"Making Friends and Making Enemies"

"Battle Down the Mines"

  • The Monmon in the village are kidnapped and enslaved by the Fangmon. Then, it is revealed the leader of the Fangmon, Armormon, was a former member of that very same village until they kicked him out for picking fights over everything. He swore revenge on them for it, and this appears to be it.

"Playing for Keep"

  • Jet Set tricks Flash into agreeing to an Ante-Battle, explaining it is like a normal battle except the winner gets to take a scan from the loser, with Flash intending to take the scan of GeoGreymon that Jet almost got them killed for. But after Jet beats Flash, he takes Veemon from him, with it being revealed Digimon partners are an acceptable option to take in Ante-Battles. Veemon refuses to go with him, declaring Flash to be his partner regardless of what the Digivices say, only for Jet to forcibly trap him inside his Digivice. The chapter ends with Flash alone in the stadium, falling to the ground in anger and frustration and letting out a roar that is heard throughout all of Codex, with everyone who hears it feeling bad for him.

"Crushing Loss"

  • The chapter opens with Flash having a Nightmare Sequence of losing Veemon, unable to save him.
  • Three days have passed since Flash lost Veemon, and during that time he hasn't logged back into Codex. He has been completely depressed, with all his classmates giving him the wide berth, not wanting to cross him in his state.
  • Twilight calls out Flash on not doing anything to help Veemon for so long, explaining how he hasn't been out of Jet's Digivice since he won him and is basically a prisoner once again. Only this is worse than when he was trapped under the Digimental since now he is conscious the whole time.
  • When Shining Armor rescues Flash after he gets in over his head trying to get a rare Digimon scan, Flash admits he is scared Veemon will hate him for getting him into this mess in the first place and won't want to see him again.

"Lessons Learned the Hard Way"

  • The Codex Commanders have a meeting where they discuss how what happened to Veemon and Flash has negatively impacted all of Codex. They realize it was a mistake to allow Ante-Battles in the first place, since not only were they encouraging the players to gamble with each other, they have disrespected the partner system and undermined what Codex was created to build. Despite being sickened by Jet's treatment of Veemon though, they technically can't do anything themselves or give Flash any advantages. They agree Ante-Battles need an Obvious Rule Patch though once Flash gets Veemon back, so nothing like this can ever happen again.

"Taking it to the Ex-Treme"

  • Wormmon's Adaptational Villainy can be pretty shocking to those familiar with him from the anime, going from trying to be the Morality Pet to a loyal follower of Hudiemon with a Fantastic Racism towards humans and Digimon who side with them.
  • Flash has to watch helplessly as Veemon is beaten senseless by Stingmon.

"The Knight's Tale"

  • The tale of Imperialdramon does not have a happy ending. After spending so long protecting the Digital World, starting a family of his own, and creating the Royal Knights while passing on his power to those he deemed worthy, eventually a descendant of the World Breaker appeared, and since Imperialdramon was no longer in his prime, he lost the fight against it, with his last action being to create Omnimon to destroy the evil Digimon, and entrusted him with leadership over the Royal Knights before finally being deleted.
Tentomon: That's it? That's the end of the story?
Craniamon: Of course. What, you were expecting a happy ending? This isn't a fairytale. This is history. Everything you've seen really happened.

"Royal Knighting"

  • Flash meets a Wingdramon, who is training under the Royal Knights with his brother Breakdramon to one day DNA Digivolve into the Royal Knight Examon. However, Wingdramon reveals something not many know. Unlike Digimon with human partners, when Wild Digimon DNA Digivolve, their minds cannot be fused, one of them must be deleted and absorbed. When they learned of this, Breakdramon volunteered to be the one to be lost, believing that as a Virus Digimon he was less deserving to be a Royal Knight than Wingdramon. But Wingdramon doesn't want to lose his brother and has purposely been keeping himself from Digivolving into Slayerdramon for as long as possible to protect him.
  • When Flash tells the Royal Knights how Wingdramon doesn't want to Digivolve because he doesn't want his brother to die, Omnimon sadly notes the same thing happened to him, remembering his partner MetalGarurumon and how he passed his data on to him when he was fatally injured. He remarks it was hard for him knowing MetalGarurumon was going to die whether he gave him his data or not. Dynasmon realizes they were so focused on getting Examon to join their ranks they didn't consider how either of the brothers might feel about sacrificing themselves or losing someone they cared about.

"Memories on the Track"

  • In a minor moment, Flash hopes that Trixie and Sandalwood don't get too comfortable using their Royal Knight scans, partly because he doesn't want their partners Lunamon and Mangoramon to feel side-lined and neglected.
  • Despite their victory, Fluttershy is a bit sad that Jazardmon had to be deleted, even though he was their enemy.

"The Dragon Soul Stones"

  • MagnaAngemon, the de facto leader of the resistance, has a massive prejudice against Virus Digimon, even the ones that wish to do good, due to a Freudian Excuse from his Rookie-hood that involved a Virus Digimon. However, he shows he takes it too far when he tries to delete an Otamamon that is the partner of one of the Codex Players, seeing it as an enemy simply for being a Virus.
  • MagnaAngemon snaps at Baoyendramon that he is only in the resistance due to being capable of Digivolving with the stones, and does not consider him an equal.
  • The leader of the Virus Army is revealed to be a WarGrowlmon. So another protagonist Digimon from the anime is given massive Adaptational Villainy, this time as one of the main antagonists.

"A Promise Kept"

  • WarGrowlmon taunts MagnaAngemon during their battle, wondering why he hates Virus Digimon so much, and mockingly asks if they took something or someone from him. When Baoyendramon tries to get him to calm down, he is just told to shut up.
  • As shown by his treatment in the previous chapter as well as this one, Baoyendramon knows that MagnaAngemon only considers him a placeholder at best and would have never bothered with him if there was a stronger Digimon that could use the stone available.
  • Despite their victory, the resistance suffered many casualties in the battle. This is shown in the opening scene when an Ikkakumon manages to defeat an IceDevimon only to immediately be killed by Armormon. Azulongmon at the very least says they must never forget their sacrifice.

"Battle for the Champion Title"

  • Flash faces Wallflower Blush in his match to Rank Up to Champion, and she seems to be just as much of a Forgettable Character as she was in canon. She claims she is only just now getting the opportunity to rank up here, despite having played for twice as long as Flash. None of Flash's friends remember seeing her battle before either, despite how long she claims to have been battling.

"Taste of the Forbidden Fruit"

"Double Battle, Double Trouble"

  • Applejack and Rarity want to show Flash and Trixie how Tag Battles work and show them how much more difficult they can be than a regular battle when you need to work with someone. Not only do Flash and Trixie spend the whole battle arguing with each other and getting in each other's way, resulting in a humiliating defeat, they continue to blame each other long after the end of the battle. It eventually escalates to the two of them disowning each other as friends and storming off in opposite directions. Applejack and Rarity are especially unhappy by this outcome, since this is clearly not what they wanted them to get out of their battle.

"Beach Day Mystery"

  • Pinkie's attempt to give everyone a relaxing beach day are ruined due to having to deal with the Dark Ocean.

"Dark Waves Rising"

"The Battle of Milk and Cookies"

  • The opening scene has Flash and Veemon trying to figure out ExVeemon's partner he DNA Digivolves with. When Twilight asks why they are suddenly so interested, Flash explains he still needs to become stronger because of the recent battle with Dagomon that resulted in Jijimon sacrificing himself, in addition to how they still have the Dragon Soul Stones to deal with and how he promised Azulongmon he would keep WarGrowlmon away from them. It is very clear the pressure Flash is under is starting to get to him.

"Burying the Hatchet"

  • The opening scene for the chapter has the Royal Knights unable to pass through the invisible barrier to Target Mountain created by the Dragon Soul Stone. They lament that despite how they are supposed to be the protectors of the Digital World they are completely powerless in this situation and are left waiting while leaving the fate of the world in the hands of others.
  • A lot of stuff including Megadramon:
    • He reveals to Flash that he's the Airdramon that he and Twilight fought and scanned. After they attacked him, he became scared that the world was as dangerous as them and hid away in a cave until he could become stronger. He ended up fighting wave after wave of hundreds of Vilemon and absorbed their data, allowing him to Digivolve but turning him into a Virus. He explains he hates being a Virus Type because of how everyone else in the Digital World hates him, either running from him in fear or attacking him. He joined WarGrowlmon because he has nowhere else to go, and now is starting to think that maybe everyone is right, that's he's nothing but an evil destroyer.
    • Flash manages to convince Megadramon that he can choose his own path and being a Virus Type doesn't automatically make him evil like WarGrowlmon. Megadramon turns against WarGrowlmon and attacks him to stop him from getting the Dragon Soul Stone, but WarGrowlmon and Armormon initially believe he wants the stone for himself, revealing that he is one of the four Digimon that can Digivolve to Megidramon with it. This shocks Megadramon, since he didn't know this, and they taunt him that he's nothing but a destroyer. This news greatly upsets Megadramon and gets him to hesitate, until Flash reminds him of what they talked about before, with Angewomon agreeing he shouldn't let others decide who he is.
    • After the battle is won, MagnaAngemon attempts to delete Megadramon, due to how he's a Virus Digimon and can potentially become Megidramon. Megadramon looks down in shame and makes no attempt to defend himself, seemingly accepting his fate until Magnadramon protects him.

"A Rapid Battle"

  • After a training session in the Beta-Stadium where Flash stated they all needed to get as strong as possible the next time they face WarGrowlmon, Tentomon voices his concern that Flash is starting on the course to only caring about winning instead of having fun. Though Flash says he'll have all the fun he can once the Digital World is safe.
  • Datamon is kidnapped by the Virus Army, being forced by WarGrowlmon to create new Battle Gear for them to make them even stronger, and Armormon demanding he make him a Mega. Micro and the others quickly notice his absence but don't have any idea where he could be.

"Hook Line and Sinker"

  • Hookmon's Evil Plan in the flashbacks, when he kidnapped several innocent Digimon with the intent of selling scans of them to Codex players. It is essentially the Digimon equivalent of human trafficking. It is no wonder Twilight and Tawnimon suspected he might be responsible for Datamon's kidnapping.

"Belly of the Beast"

  • Despite everything working out in the end, Micro Chips is still depressed since their adventure brought them no closer to finding Datamon at all.

"Cold Reliable"

  • The chapter begins with a look at Thorax's home-life. His mother Chrysalis gets on his case for having one B on his report card, instead of straight A's. She acts like it means he needs to study even harder and that this one B could potentially affect his entire life when trying to get into college. When telling him about how he needs to "get serious about his school work" she says that him stopping from playing "that silly Digimon game" was just a start and he needs to spend every waking moment preparing for the future and taking over the company. It is clear going to Codex is the only way Thorax can have any fun without his mother getting on his case.
  • Chrysalis' words have an effect on Thorax all day, with him wondering if Codex really was just distracting him. This causes him to act distracted and "weird" all day with his friends, and leaves him initially unable to lift the Digimental of Reliability until he opens up to Grubmon about what his mother expects of him.

"Rosewell that Ends Well"

  • Micro is so desperate to find Datamon he ends up wandering into a trap when an anonymous player, later revealed to be Jet Set, sends him a message saying they know where Datamon is and gives him a link to a location scan he claims Datamon is at.
  • Pillomon is forced to keep Micro and Tentomon trapped in a dream due to being threatened by Vademon herself.

"Gearing Up for War"

  • We see Datamon working for the Virus Army, how he is threatened by both WarGrowlmon to make better Battle Gear for them and by Armormon to make his new Mega form unreasonably overpowered despite Datamon's warnings. We last see Datamon believing that whether he succeeds or fails in his forced assignments he's going to get deleted for sure.
    Datamon: Micro...anybody. Help.

"Canyon Bombardment"

  • Unfortunately, the Resistance was not able to increase their numbers after their loses from their previous battles with the Virus Army.
  • Datamon is clearly regretful over how he was forced to build Battle Gear for WarGrowlmon and his army. But he is especially ashamed over how he made a new Mega form for Armormon, Bombardramon, and how he's going to hurt Micro and the others with it. He finally achieved his life's work of creating a new type of Digimon, only for it to be in the worst way possible.

"The Great Dragon War's Climax"

  • MagnaAngemon makes it clear that once he becomes Goldramon, he still intends to destroy Megadramon once he reveals his "true nature". Megadramon even says he is afraid he'll give into his Virus nature too and is fine with being destroyed if that happens, being glad he found friends before that happened.
  • MagnaAngemon, refusing to let go of his hate towards Viruses, refuses any help from Megadramon during the battle with WarGrowlmon and yells at Megadramon he'll destroy him once he's Goldramon. He's so distracted during this though, that it allows WarGrowlmon to sneak up behind him and fatally wound him by impaling him on his Assault Balancer. As he slowly dies, MagnaAngemon says how he bets Azulongmon and Magnadramon are happy to see him like this, knowing how much he was disliked for how he sees Virus Digimon. They make it clear that while they disagreed with him they still respected him for bringing them together. But even in his final moments he refuses to let go of his hate, feeling ashamed that he's beinf deleted by a Virus, and is now dying in the arms of one too.
  • After MagnaAngemon's death, Megadramon says the only way to keep the Dragon Soul Stone out of WarGrowlmon's hands is to use it himself. His friends beg him not to, since it will just mean he'll become Megidramon himself and destroy the Digital World, but he says he'll try to hold the evil in him back long enough for them to destroy him, intending to make a Heroic Sacrifice. It's also basically Megadramon pulling a Suicide by Cop, since he's made it clear he hates being a Virus and is fine with dying if he goes down the wrong path. They still beg him not to, since he would be forcing his friends to kill him, but there's no more time to discuss it, with Megadramon grabbing the stone before WarGrowlmon can. He begins to Mega Digivolve into Megidramon, with his Digivolution even triggering the Royal Knights' Digital Hazard warning. Fortunately though, things quickly get better when Megadramon hears his friends calling out to him and remembers what they taught him about deciding who he is, and he refuses to become Megidramon, becoming Goldramon instead.
