- Turnabout Nephew
: Kristoph assumes that Klavier and Ema named their son Kristopher after him until Klavier reveals that both Kristopher and Kristoph were named after his maternal uncle, Kristoph Amel. Their mother named her elder son after her brother in hopes of redeeming the name after learning about her brother's crime. But because of Kristoph's Amoral Attorney actions, Klavier named his son "Kristopher" in hopes he'll be better than his uncle and great-uncle.
- What if the Yeerks Were the Good Guys?: Eva's Yeerk, Edriss (no number), is named after Edriss 562.
- best served cold (Nyame): Laurel initially intends to name her baby Rebecca Sara Lance, in order to honor both her (presumed) deceased sister and redeem the name of Rebecca Merlyn, whose memory was shamed by Malcolm's actions. She changes the first name from Rebecca to Olivia after finding out Oliver is the biological father.
- People Gonna Talk: Zig-zagged in this The Legend of Korra fic. Mako has four children by three different women (It Makes Sense in Context). His twin daughters are both named for living people (his grandmother Yin and Korra's mother Senna), while his sons and Bolin and Opal Bei Fong's daughter all follow this trope: San (named for Mako's late father), Aang (for the previous Avatar), and Poppy (named for her great-great-grandmother Poppy Bei Fong).
- In the Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego? fanfic Parthenogenesis, Carmen named her daughter Marguerite after her deceased mother.
- Cross Ange The Knight Of Hilda: The epilogue set seven years later reveals that Ange and Tusk had a son, who was named Istvan (Van for short) after Tusk's late father. The story also ends with the birth of Rio and Hilda's daughter, whom they name Sarah in memory of Rio's childhood friend.
Crossover
- Amazing Fantasy (My Hero Academia & Spider-Man): Peter's daughter, May "Mayday" Parker, after his late Aunt May, who succumbed to old age.
- Ben 10: Unlimited (Ben 10 & Justice League): Ben's children have middle names that refer to his dead relatives. Ken's full name is Kenneth Max Tennyson, while Jen's full name is Jennifer Gwendolyn Tennyson, after Ben's grandfather and cousin respectively.
- Children of Time (Doctor Who & Sherlock Holmes): Sally (Sparrow) Watson names her firstborn Katherine, after her blasted-to-the-past best friend Cathy Nightingale. "Watson and Sparrow" implies that Cathy was the only real family Sally had.
- Code Grid: Keeva Flynn is named after her grandfather, Kevin Flynn, who has been (presumed) dead for roughly twelve years.
- In Dante's Night at Freddy's, Dante and Lucia's daughter is referred to as Evie after Dante's mother Eva, and according to its predecessor Revelations, her middle name is Matis, after Lucia's adopted mother Matier. Additionally, their son is named Arthur, which is pronounced similarly to "Sparda", Dante's father.
- A Possible Encounter for a Phantom (Danny Phantom & Kim Possible): Jazz says that had Danny been born a girl, his name would have been Danielle, after their maternal great-grandmother. So in a sense, Danielle is this.
- Syndication (Farscape & Stargate SG-1): As well as Crichton and Aeryn's son D'Argo, they also have a daughter named after Zhaan.
- In the "Tamers Forever Series" the infant Taichi Kamiya is named after his late uncle who apparently committed suicide.
- It's mentioned in one of the spinoffs to the Frozen (2013) fanfic Becoming Free that Freya's childhood friend was going to name her child after her if they were female. Freya isn't dead, however her friend thought she was killed when she was run out of town for being a lesbian. When Freya notes that it's considered bad luck to name your kid after a living person, she questions if maybe they should alter the spelling instead.
- From Behind Bars: At the end, Scar names his son with Laila "Mheetu", after his previous son with his old mate Sarafina.
- The Great Mouse Detective 2: Unexpected Love: At the end, Basil and Danielle's son is named Padraic, after Danielle's father Professor Ratigan.
- Nuka in The Lion King: Hidden Stories is named after his mother Zira's older brother, who drowned when they were trying to run away from home.
- Dodger And Company: Dodger names one of his pups Annie, after his late mother.
- Mariano's Brother: In this Encanto fanfiction, Dolores and Mariano name their first born Camila after Dolores' late brother, Camilo, who had been murdered earlier in the fic.
- Tiana's Tales: Tiana and Naveen have a daughter named Jamie after Tiana's late father James.
- When Cullen becomes a father in the Skyhold Academy Yearbook series, he names his daughter Eleanor, after his late mother. Later, Cassandra adopts a baby boy and names him Anthony, after her late brother.
- In Ten Versus Blight, Ser Jory still deserts, but escapes from Ostagar instead of fighting Duncan. When the rest of the Wardens find him in Redcliffe, it is revealed that he named his newborn daughter Mhairi, after the fellow Grey Warden recruit who died during the Joining.
- Elemental Chess Trilogy:
- Both played straight and averted. Grumman asks Roy whether he and Riza plan to name their unborn child after Maes Hughes; Roy replies that there are too many people who deserve the honor of having a child named for them, and so they've decided to give the baby a name all his or her own. Played straight by Ling and Lan Fan, however, who name their first child Fu, after her grandfather.
- The final volume of the series reveals that it's also played straight by Alphonse and May Chang, whose daughter is named Nina. Ed and Winry, meanwhile, don't name any of their children after anyone who has died, but one of their sons is named Curtis, in honor of the (still living) Sig and Izumi.
Game of Thrones / A Song of Ice and Fire
- The North Remembers: In combination with Someone to Remember Him By, Jeyne Westerling names her newborn son Robb after his murdered father, and nicknames him Robbie. Edmure was also wishing to do the same likewise, but it's subverted when his lady wife is later executed because of the political intrigue that pervades Westeros.
- Safe Anchorage: Jeyne names her son after her dead father, Vayon. She considers naming him Robb, but Theon doesn't take it well.
Godzilla / King Kong / MonsterVerse
- Abraxas (Hrodvitnon): Upon his birth, the newborn Manda is named by Monster X after the former's long-deceased father.
- The Choices That Make Us: Regulus is named after his deceased great-uncle on his father’s side of the family.
- Thanfiction, mastermind behind the "DAYDverse", is especially prone to this. There are only three kids who aren't named after dead people, and two were adopted from another country. Of course, there are a lot of names to choose from...
- In Formerly Known as Harry Potter?, trans girl Lily took her preferred name from her deceased biological mother.
- Mind Brigade: Eve names her daughter after Jamie. The two weren't particularly close, with Jamie being a reclusive grouch and the two speaking only a handful of times, but he did inadvertently help Eve decide not to abort and he saved Jill's life after he died by offering in his will to be her heart donor.
- Fanon very much supports the idea of England picking America's human given name to honour Alfred the Great, the ruler who's considered by historians as the one man who threw the basis for England as we know it to grow and exist.
- At the end of the Hunger Games fanfic Some Semblance of Meaning, Lavinia/Tansy and Damon name their two children after Vale and Kit.
- Epilogue of Ib: The final chapter, which is based off the Promise of Reunion ending, has an older Ib and Garry with a daughter named Mary, after the Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds and Big Bad of the game who just wanted to become human.
- Spring and New Beginnings plays with this as, while Ib is considering naming the kid Mary, Garry is much more hesitant, wanting to move on from that ugly chapter of their lives.
- Starlight Is For Always: Pilar's middle name comes from Jerrica's deceased mother Jacqui. Her given name comes from a relative of her dad's, but it's not mentioned if they're dead or not.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
- League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Tempest Rewrite: In Epilogue 3, Orlando impregnates Mina and Emma on their wedding night. Mina and Orlando name their son Allan after Allan Quartermain, while Emma names her daughter Samantha after her mother. All three later have many more children, who are all named after long-lost friends and lovers.
- In the second chapter of the Zelda fic Aftermath, Link and Illia name their daughter after Link's friend Midna. The original Midna isn't actually dead, but she's stuck in another dimension, making her as distant as the dead.
- Blind Courage: At the end, one of Zelda's twin daughters is named after her mother Iriana.
- Breath of the Wild has an original character, a Zora named Lochlia. She has four children with her husband Bazz, and two of them are named for her dead parents, but one of them ends up being an aversion. Their names are Link and Mipha, named Lochlia's parents, the Champions who were named Link and Mipha. Young Mipha plays it straight, but young Link averts it because Lochlia always knew that he was still alive and would wake up one day.
- Splint:
- Cadoc reveals to his Orcish lover Rukhash that his Dunlending grandmother had a brother named Cadoc who gave his life to help her escape their chieftain's order which she was unwilling to obeynote . She requested Cadoc's father to name her grandson after her beloved brother.
- Rukhash and Cadoc name their daughter Dera, after Cadoc's Dunlending grandmother. It's also a nod to the fact they both have Dunlending heritage. The author's spoilery artwork also reveals that they'll later have a son whom they name Geth after Rukhash's Dunlending grandfather.
- My Sister Leni: In one chapter, Leni finds out that her parents had a stillborn baby that they named "Leni" prior to her.
- Hell's Kitchen, Full of Grace: Jessica makes "Matthew" Peter's middle name, unaware that his father was still alive.
- The Seven Misfortunes of Lady Fortune: Alya and Nino name their daughter Marie, after Marinette (who is considered dead for the past seven years).
- Path Of Needles: One of Kakashi's three kids is named after his childhood friend Obito.
- White Rain: Itachi van Alstyne, the son of the long-since departed Uchiha Itachi arriving in Konoha.
- Discussed in a (possibly non-canon) Advice and Trust omake. After Shinji admitted how easily he could turn out like his father if Asuka was killed/comatose, she made him promise that -in the event that she couldn't be with him- he should marry Rei instead and name a daughter after her. He made her give the same promise (although he pointed out that adoption would probably be required under those circumstances).
- EVA Sessions: Someplace Vast and Dry: Gendo Ikari named his son Shinji after his late friend and colleague, Dr. Shinji Katsuragi.
- The Second Try:
- Averted with Aki, as the parents-to-be were afraid they would begin making comparison to the child's namesake and unintentionally force the child to imitate them.
- Downplayed later on when Asuka suggests to Aki that she name her doll after her maternal grandmother, but it gets corrupted from Kyoko to Kiko due to her mishearing the suggestion.
- In the story Y is for You're always There, Charlie names his first child after Don, who was killed several years previously while saving a boy from being shot during a bank shootout.
- The Shin Sekai: Rikuo and Tsurara's second child, Rihan, is named in honor of Rikuo's late father.
- A Visitor In Their Dreams: About a year before Mari's spirit visited them, Sunny and Aubrey had a daughter they named after her.
- Coby's Choice: Nami names her and Luffy's son Ace after his foster uncle.
- Marie D. Suesse and the Mystery New Pirate Age!: A variant happens. The eponymous character, nicknamed "Mar," vanishes from the world as a result of a wish to restore it, and to fulfill his promise to remember her name, Law names a kitten after her.
- Entrancing Wendy: Subverted. Wendy named one of her kids after James Hook, but Hook wasn't dead. Unbeknownst to Wendy, he survived being eaten alive.
- Pokémon Reset Bloodlines:
- Zinnia is revealed to have a daughter named Aster. A sidestory later reveals she was named after her late friend from canon.
- Ash himself is an example, as Delia named him after her father Ashton Ketchum, who died shortly before he was born.
- Til Death Do Us Part:
- Ash and Misty's son is named after Ash's deceased biological father Will.
- Jessie and James' son Skylar married Samuel and Delia's granddaughter Brooke (who is implied to be the child of their daughter Laurel and Tracey). They named their child "Samuel" after his great-grandfather.
- The Great Meta Fic: This story is based on a tournament called Ship Survivor on the RWBY subreddit, with Redditors as characters. Since many Reddtors returned for Ship Survivor II even though their characters were killed off in the first installment of the fic, similarly-named relatives of the original characters represent them in the sequel.
- What a Wonderful World reveals that Summer's daughter Ruby is named after her sister Ruby.
- Let's Endless Party!: In chapter 2 part 1, Maeda Keiji and Date Masamune and Sanada Yukimura's son Masa's ex-Split Personality Sei, now in a body from a potion brewed by Kyogoku Maria, take in a one month old baby boy who they name after Masa's late boyfriend Oyamada Nobushige.
- Alternate Universe Janine's daughter, Elizabeth Joan Watson in The Sanctuary Telepath. Given that she grew up in Victorian Britain it makes some sense, even more so as she can be downright sentimental. Elizabeth was her adoptive mother's name, Joan comes from John (her brother, already dead in that reality) and Watson is the girl's late father's last name (James Watson) which Janine uses for her despite that they've never been married and she uses her brother's last name, Druitt.
- In the Sonic the Hedgehog series Descent into Darkness, Maria was named after her paternal grandmother Mary.
- Single Parents Night: Shadow's daughter Maria looks strikingly like Shadow's sister figure Maria Robotnik, who was killed over 50 years ago. The difference is that Maria Robotnik was a human child, but Maria is a hedgehog toddler. It's explained that Maria is a clone of sorts that Shadow found on ARK.
- Sonic the Comic – Online!: It's shown that in the future, Tekno and Amy will have a baby named Johnny. He's named after Johnny Lightfoot, a Freedom Fighter who died in the last arc of the original series.
- Limpet AU: Five years after the Executor disappeared and its crew was presumed dead, Piett's sister had another daughter named Wesla, after Piett's middle name, Weslerman.
- Not a Monster: Morton Jr. is named in memory of Bowser's oldest brother Morton, who died of Koopa Pox as a child.
- Something New:
- Alice's middle name comes from her paternal grandmother Colleen, who is very much alive.
- Colleen casually reveals that Liam was named after his grandfather who had recently passed away.
- Underneath the Sakura Tree: Miwa was named after her then-deceased paternal grandmother.
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: From the Hidden City: In this version, Lita's name is a Stage Name and her real name is Hinata; Word of God is that she's named after her grandmother, who died long before she was born.
- “Onwards and Upwards” features Jack and Rose surviving the Titanic and moving back to Chippea Falls in time for Rose to learn that she’s pregnant with twins. While they name their daughter ‘Danielle Josephine’ as they like the name and the reminder of their first kiss, their son is named James Edward Dawson after Jack and Rose’s respective fathers, both wanting to give their son a connection to the wider family even if the children won’t be accepted by their only living grandparent.
- Legacy: Heather’s baby is to be named after her mother’s late campmate.
- Three of Fireheart and Sandstorm's kits in Bitter Repercussions are named after deceased cats: Longkit is named after Longtail, Lavenderkit is named after a Delicate and Sickly cat Fireheart knew as a kitten, and Redkit is named after Sandstorm's father Redtail.
- Spottedleaf's plot: Sandstorm named Leafkit after her aunt Spottedleaf. Ironically, Spottedleaf hates Sandstorm.
- There is a Watchmen story where Dan and Laurie's teenage son has the middle name Walter, which was Rorschach's real name. (It should be noted that Rorschach is actually still alive in this story due to time travel shenanigans, but there's no way Dan knew that.)
